BRITISH VALUES IN SCIENCE
Making decisions together:
Democracy
Scientists regularly agree on the best way to move forward.
The SI system of units means we all measure things the
same way. The periodic table means we all know which
element we are talking about, no matter what country we
are form.
Freedom for all:
Individual Liberty
Scientific advances have given us freedom from many
diseases, such as smallpox, and mean that we are able to be
healthy and enjoy our lives. Forensic science has ensured
that criminals are brought to justice and people are safe.
Understanding why rules are important:
The Rule of Law
Scientists have to obey the laws of the country they are
working in, this means that we can’t just go off and create a
killer virus, or killer robots! We have to make sure our work
is ethical, and won’t cause harm.
Treat others as you would want to be treated:
Mutual Respect
Collaboration and sharing of resources between scientific
communities to develop a greater knowledge (international
space station, vaccine and antibiotic research). Respect for
others is shown in the amount of care scientists have to
take if they want to experiment on a person.
We enjoy learning about different faiths and cultures:
Tolerance and Respect
of opinions and diversity
Scientific decisions about issues such as cloning, GM crops
and nuclear power are debated by Parliament, so that all
opinions are listened to and respected. When we learn
about in vitro fertilisation we consider the ethical impact of
the process and how it can lead to differences of opinion.

BRITISH VALUES IN GEOGRAPHY
Making decisions together:
Democracy
In Geography we all agree the types of behaviours we expect to
be displayed in the classroom. All students have a say in the
content of the full value contract.
We have a freedom to choose:
Individual Liberty
In Geography we understand that we will receive praise with the
reward of achievement points.
We also understand that behaviour points will be a consequence
of making the wrong choices in class.
Understand why rules are important:
The Rule of Law
In Geography we work to the best of our ability, as decided in full
value contracts.
We meet deadlines for completion of classwork and homework.
Treat others as you would want to be treated:
Mutual Respect
In Geography we listen to one another and show respect for
opinions which may differ from ours.
We enjoy learning about different faiths and cultures:
Tolerance and Respect
of opinions and diversity
We look at other cultures and how people live. We appreciate the
diversity that other cultures bring to our lives and experiences.
In Year 8 we study indigenous cultures and how other people’s
lives differ from our own.
