Amanda got involved with Council four years ago when she was known around the district as the “Coat Lady”. She engineered the largest coat drive the district has even seen, collecting coats from over 20 campuses and businesses in Plano ISD. Then with her team, she washed them and delivered to over a dozen schools in Plano, providing warm coats for over 850 children. And this was just the beginning. Amanda has a passion for our low income families, always looking for ways to help not just the children affected by poverty but the schools they attend. During her two years on Council, Amanda has overseen the STAAR snacks drives, two successful Poverty Simulations which raised awareness and educated our community on the challenges those living in poverty face every day, orchestrated two very successful Hygiene Kit drives which provided age specific hygiene kits for over 1,500 Plano ISD school children. Amanda was chosen in 2013 to be a member of the first Texas PTA Emerging Leaders Academy, where she represented Plano PTA well. She then went on to represent the Texas PTA at the National Council of States meeting on poverty. Her excitement for community outreach is contagious, and there are now 35 chairs serving on PTA boards all over the district. Her sense of humor and drive infuse every project she tackles and she has inspired so many to join her in the battle against the effects of poverty on our kids. She is proud to share this honor with her husband Scott, her children Holden, Quinn and Isla and her many friends in the Plano community. Susie is also involved in leadership roles in both NCL and YMSL. She rarely says “No”. When asked to take a job or do a task, she enthusiastically gets it done. She is not afraid to step out of her comfort zone. Anyone that has worked with her knows she’s 100% dedicated to our children and in it with a caring and loving heart. Susie is an excellent role model for both children and parents alike. We are proud to present her with the Extended Service Award for her many years of dedication and volunteering. Congratulations Susie!! ROBINSON MIDDLE SCHOOL Michele Carey-Dave’ Michele Carey-Dave’ has been endlessly devoted to our area PTA’s for the past 12 years. At Daffron Elementary, Michele served in the following positions: Lead Room Parent at every grade level, Environmental Chair for seven years, KSE Coordinator for seven years, VP Ways and Means for two years. She has been a docent at the Heritage Farmstead Museum for eight years, an endeavor she began because of her daughter’s third grade field trip. One of Michele’s greatest contributions at Daffron was helping to build the Discovery Garden. Michele and her KSE crew landscaped and nurtured the Garden for seven years, spending countless hours weeding, watering and gardening. While involved at Daffron, Michele was also very involved with the Plano ISD Council of PTA’s and served two years as Environmental Chair, two years as Community Liaison and two years as VP of Programs. Michele has served on the Jasper Choir Board as well as holding the position of Environmental Chair at Jasper HS for two years. She is an incredible advocate for PTA. She not only looks out for the good of her family, friends and faculty, but also always has the City of Plano close at heart. Thank you, Michele, for your invaluable talents for so many years. We are proud to honor Michele with the Texas PTA Extended Service Award. Michele shares this honor with her husband, Amar, and her three children; Gabrielle (17), Asher (14) and Talia (12). 9 “ We all have a responsibility to volunteer somewhere and I’m lucky that I get the education and get taken to places to see what’s out there and see what’s happening and to then be a part of it in hopefully an impactful way.” Jennifer Garner SHEPTON HIGH SCHOOL Kim Brown Kim has been a valuable PTA member at Barksdale, Renner, Shepton and West. What stands out about Kim is how she goes about her work. She takes on the “grunt work” of PTA like spirit wear and the school store. They aren’t high-profile jobs, but the way she performs her tasks makes her special. She is organized, efficient and always keeps the big picture in mind – to make a profit so our PTA can fund our objectives for the year. She not only attends Board meetings, but makes practical and insightful contributions. You can always count on Kim for a reasonable guidance. We are so lucky to have her on our team. Suzy Charney “ If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito.” Betty Reese Suzy is always ready with a smile and helpful advice for the PTSA as well as all Shepton families. In her work as Office Manager at Huffman, Haggar, and Shepton, she has gone out of her way to support the students, staff, and community. Her friendly, engaging personality makes all who visit the office feel welcomed and valued. She knows it’s the people that make the school, and she ensures that she has taken care of everyone’s needs each day. Suzy is a valuable resource with her knowledge of finance, and, with her years of dedicated service to the Plano schools, people see her as the “go to” person on things large and small. We are fortunate to have such a caring and dedicated person like Suzy working in our school. Jenny Wood We can all agree that learning your way in a new school can be difficult. Jenny was not just new to the area and PTA, but new to the country and yet she made the jump from Hospitality chair to President at Barksdale with just a year or so of PTA experience under her belt. She made our crazy PTA a happy, fun place to be and was a great role model for many of us who followed her. She has continued to serve at Renner, Shepton and West, almost always as an officer and never without with her trademark enthusiasm and humor. While I imagine Jenny would say that PTA has given her much – many friendships and memories – I doubt that she could ever receive as much as she has given. Jenny, we thank you for your generosity and contribution to our children, schools and community. PLANO WEST SENIOR HIGH Kathy King Kathy King started working for PISD in 1982. In reflecting back on meaningful life experiences, Brad thought about an experience he had while a junior at Klein Oak High School in the northern suburbs of Houston where he had the opportunity to tutor a younger student who had missed several weeks as a result of chemotherapy. That pivotal memory drove Brad to enter the UT Liberal Arts secondary education program. Upon graduating from UT, Brad moved to Dallas to teach at Vines High School. At Vines, he worked with the PAL program and was co-team leader of World Geography. In 2010, he received the NOVA Award which recognizes outstanding teachers who contribute to the advancement of social studies within the school and community. He has been teaching in Plano ISD for the past six years and loves taking on new challenges, which is what lead him to be involved in opening the new Plano Academy High School last year. While working on the World Geography curriculum writing team, he also served as a member of the Academy Technology Committee. He helped assess the various technology options for the new school and make decisions regarding the implementation of the Canvas Learning Management System. Ultimately, Brad helped take Canvas from a generic system into one that helps to meet the unique needs of the Academy. Most recently, he has played a large role in developing the new Student Management System, including the new “Trust Level” system and schedule being implemented this semester. Brad is a dedicated and enthusiastic individual, full of new ideas, and always willing to take on a new challenge; he is an enormous asset to the Academy. SAIGLING ELEMENTARY Dan Bramschreiber Born in Menominee, Michigan, Dan Bramschreiber has been a Transplant Texan since 1996. In Plano, he found a special community that made him feel at home with a small town atmosphere. While his first child attended Saigling Elementary, a program called Literacy Links, organized by Jennifer Howe, caught the new father’s attention. It recalled a point in his young life where education took a turn for the positive. Each week, a group of talented readers were gathered to read and share stories for half of a class period, and Dan was invited to join in the third Grade. While not one of the best readers in the group, it challenged him to get better and enjoy reading, while gaining confidence and competence. That half-hour each week had a lasting effect on his educational experience and direction. The Literacy Links program offered Dan a chance to pay it forward to another generation of children, just as he had been gifted. Now having his second daughter nearly through Saigling and one more coming in the next couple of years, Dan considers it a blessing to be called upon each year to provide a positive touch to several children’s lives.
