Frequently Asked Questions 1. What technical skills do I need to be successful an online course? Basic technical skills include, but are not limited to, word processing, Internet navigation, sending and receiving email with attachments, reading and posting messages on a discussion board, uploading files and installing software. 2. What other skills do I need to be successful in an online class? Online courses demand a lot of time. You need good time management skills. While online courses offer flexibility, you still have to meet deadlines. You need to be a self-motivated, independent learner who has the time to devote to an online class. You also need good written communication skills as this will be your main form of communication with your instructor and classmates. 3. How much time should I schedule for my online course(s)? Online courses generally require more time than a face-to-face class. You must be willing and able to put in the extra time and effort to complete assigned reading, projects, and other required tasks. On average, an online course requires you to spend at least 9 hours on Blackboard, per week, per class, completing your course activities, assignments, tests, and requirements. 4. Can I take an online course if I don’t have a computer or Internet at home? Yes, you can. But remember that you are required to complete your course work online and many students find the best time to do that in the evenings or on the weekends from home. If you try to use your work computer, you may run into issues such as firewalls and popup blockers which may prevent you from completing course work. 5. What services are available to help me as an online student? Your instructor is always your first resource for assistance with course content. EPCC offers services such as, Tutorial Services, Center for Students with Disabilities and Academic Computing Services at the various campuses.
