Children are required to have a medical health home and to receive dental screenings each school year. It is the goal that 100% of the children will meet these requirements. There are times that a student withdraws from the program before the information can be gathered or the screening can occur. Nutrition also plays a large role in healthy development. Head Start children receive two nutritionally appropriate meals at school each day. Preparing Students for Kindergarten How do we prepare our students for Kindergarten? We: • have certified teachers who use developmentally appropriate practices to teach children in a manner that will allow them to maximize their learning potential. • communicate our goals to parents during home visits and parent conferences so they can support learning and understand kindergarten expectations. • use a curriculum that is aligned with the Texas Pre-K guidelines and Head Start Outcomes. • administer and analyze student assessments in the areas of language and literacy, math, and social emotional development. • have a transition plan in place to help students move into the next year of school. Parent Involvement An important premise at Head Start is that the parent is a child’s first and most influential teacher. It is Head Start’s goal to provide multiple ways for parents to be involved in at school. Parents will find that they can be involved both educationally with their children, and also in leadership roles at Head Start. Below is a list of some of the ways that parents can be involved at school.
