KIDS CLUB – 5210 Guidelines
5210
At Columbia Elementary the staff believe that healthier children are happier and
more successful learners. With this in mind they are con nuing to find ways to
help their students learn about, prac ce and lead healthier lives. Last year
Columbia school was the 60 Minute Kids Club champions of BC. They are once
again par cipa ng in the 60MKC this year. The main message of the Kids Club is
on healthy habits following the 5210 guideline which stands for: 5 or more
servings of fruits and vegetables per day, 2 hours or less of screen me, 1 hour
or more of physical ac vity, and 0 sugary drinks. It is great to hear the students
demonstra ng their knowledge of these healthy habits. This year Columbia
with the support of Jenny Mitchell (district healthy living teacher) and Adele
Jones (public health nurse) has started a student leadership program for grade 5
students called the Columbia Student Health Council. They meet at lunch me
and are working on developing ideas for things they can do to help the whole
school learn about and experience healthy living choices. Sounds like the first
idea might be a tas ng party! Columbia school has also partnered with Pacific
Sport in the community to create an A er School Gym Club. The school is
fortunate to have three wonderful volunteers helping make this possible:
Sherrie Pope, Susie Welch, and Jamie Fleet. They are focusing on improving
ac vity levels in par cipa ng students through fun social organized ac vi es in
the gym. They have 20 students par cipa ng with many more who would love
to join. Con nuing to focus on healthy fitness, the school will be hos ng Pacific
Sport in November to help run the Sport Fit program for all of the grade 5s. This
program helps students discover sports where they may have strengths and
gives them an idea of their personal fitness. They plan on having a follow up
session in the spring to see how much progress has been made. They are off to
a good start with these ini a ves and plan to con nue to give their students the
knowledge and experiences they need to help them make healthy choices.

KVR Middle:
KVR Middle School was the successful recipient of a $2000 Grant from the First
West Founda on – Valley First Community Endowment Fund. The program is
open to all students, so as to prevent socio-economic discrimina on, and it is
crucial to the well-being and nourishment of at least 50 students a day. The
program is run by two reless volunteers, Lisa Lepke and Cheryl Sturko, who
don’t even have students at KVR anymore! These ladies go above and beyond
the call of duty to run a high quality breakfast program, and coach students on
appropriate manners at the same me. This money will go a long way to helping
Mrs. Lepke and Mrs. Sturko with their much-appreciated work!

The Amazing Race
On Friday, October 11th, over one hundred triads (consis ng of a team of one grade 8,
one grade 7 and one grade 6) embarked on the Amazing Race. Teams had to
disseminate clues which led them to over 20 teacher led sta ons, each with its own
unique task/challenge. This cross grade event is not only fun and enjoyable for
students, it builds an inclusive culture in which students work collabora vely and
coopera vely to complete a common goal. A huge thank you goes to Ms. Thorpe and
Mr. Bond for leading this massive undertaking.
