Busy, Busy Times at Giant’s Head!
2013 has come in with a rush! There have been activities galore happening at Giant’s
Head Elementary:
All of the classes are involved in skating at the Summerland Arena. Huge
thanks to Rob Zoppi (Principal) and to Queen’s Park Elementary for lending
their helmets.
Basketball season is up and running – Over 50 students in Grades 4 and 5
are joining in and representing Giant’s Head.
Partnerships with Raj Gupta’s (Teacher) Summerland Secondary School
Physics 11 class. Mr. Gupta’s students have been working in Grade 2 and
Kindergarten classes doing some great hands on learning in Science.
Giant’s Head Elementary has also found
time to hold an appreciation assembly
where the school recognized all the
positive contributions by the students
in the school over the first half of the year.
For literacy week, Mrs. McIntosh’s
Grade 2’s and Mrs. Balfour’s Grade 5’s
organized a book exchange. For every
book a student brought in, they
received a ticket. The books were
collected all week and then on
Friday, they did an exchange.
Students exchanged their tickets
for a “new” book brought in by
one of their classmates.

Summerland Middle
Summerland Middle School has been fortunate to be accepted into
the Federally sponsored, SVEC Exchange Program. This means
that 30 Grade 7 and 8 Band students will be travelling to Ottawa in
May to perform as well as experience the culture of the Ottawa
region. The Ottawa exchange school, Immaculata High School,
arrived in Summerland January 25th and spent the week enjoying
Summerland and the area, with visits to Apex, Nk’mip, a Penticton
Vees Game and Summerland Sweets as well as performing at
Trout Creek and Giants Head Elementary. The students enjoyed
their new found friendships and are most excited for the spring
adventure to Ottawa. Special thanks to Mr. Papineau and Julie
Planiden who have coordinated this project, as well as the
outstanding group of band parents who have devoted many hours
to this exciting exchange.

Three Little Pigs

Last week, Madame Haddow and Madame Laurie’s French
Immersion Grade 6 class performed Le Trois Petits Cochons and Le
Rock de Dinosaures to an audience including the English Track
Grade 6 classes as well as parents and guests. This learning
opportunity is symbolic of the school inquiry, that being the
question, “If we give students authentic, meaningful tasks,
will student completion of quality work and overall
engagement in school increase?” The French Immersion
students were able to demonstrate their continually developing
language skills and the English Track classes learned new
vocabulary through observation and dialogue afterwards.

We are extremely proud to announce that Trout Creek School has won one
of the $1000 prizes from the National WITS contest! Congratulations to the
Grade 5 students from division 3 for their wonderful skits on how to deal
with teasing and bullying using the WITS. The WITS program continues to
be an integral part of the school’s plan for ensuring a safe and caring school
community.

January 21 to 27 was Family Literacy Week and many Trout Creek students
took the pledge to Unplug & Play. Students were encouraged to turn off
their TV’s, video games and other electronics and spend more time playing
outdoors, hanging out with their families or simply reading. Players from
the Summerland Steam hockey team presented each Trout Creek student
with a Unplug & Play passport to help them keep their promise. And if
students completed their passport and returned it to the school they
received a free ticket to an upcoming Summerland Steam hockey game.
SHAW was also on hand at the school covering this important event. Check
out the full story at http://shaw.ca/ShawTV/Kelowna/Shows/ShawTV/ and
scroll down until you find Unplug & Play. Thanks to Debbie Patterson for
coordinating this event, Summerland Steam players and organization, and
Shaw, Wayne McDougall.
