Context
Nunthorpe Academy is a successful, vibrant, high achieving 11-19 Academy with, in the words of
OFSTED, „many exceptional qualities‟. The vast majority of our learners are well behaved and well
motivated most of the time. They treat each other with respect and readily co-operate with other
members of the Academy community to create a positive, learning environment. Our parents are
equally supportive of all that we do.
Moral Purpose
The Board of Directors and the whole Academy community believe that Nunthorpe Academy
should provide:
1. A safe, warm, caring and pleasant environment for all learners in the Academy community,
irrespective of gender, race, social or economic background or age.
2. An environment that maximises learning opportunities for the benefit of all learners.
Core Principles
The Board of Directors believes that in order to enable effective learning to take place, good
behaviour in all aspects of Academy life is necessary. Therefore it seeks to create a caring,
respectful learning environment at Nunthorpe Academy by:
1. Promoting good behaviour and discipline.
2. Promoting self-esteem, self discipline, and proper regard for authority and positive relationships
based on mutual respect.
3. Ensuring fairness of treatment for all.
4. Encouraging consistency of response to both positive and negative behaviour
5. Promoting early intervention
6. Providing a safe environment free from disruption, violence, bullying and any form of
harassment.
7. Encouraging a positive relationship with parents, carers and the wider community to develop a
shared approach to involve them in the implementation of the Academy‟s policy and associated
procedures.
This policy will be kept under regular review in light of legal developments and best practice.

Roles and Responsibilities
The Board of Directors will support the Academy in maintaining excellent standards of behaviour.
All staff have responsibility, with the support of the SLT, for creating a high quality learning
environment, teaching/modelling high standards of behaviour and implementing the agreed policy
and procedures consistently.
The Board of Directors, SLT and staff will ensure there is no differential application of the policy
and procedures on any grounds, particularly ethnic or national origin, culture, religion, gender,
disability or sexuality. They will also ensure that the concerns of students are listened to and
appropriately addressed.
Parents and carers will be expected to take responsibility for the behaviour of their child both inside
and outside the Academy (ie to and from the Academy). They will be encouraged to work in
partnership with the Academy to assist the Academy in maintaining high standards of behaviour
and will have ample opportunity to raise with the Academy any issues arising from the operation of
the policy.
Students will be expected to take responsibility for their own behaviour and will be made fully
aware of the Academy policy, procedures and expectations. Students also have a responsibility to
ensure that incidents of disruption, violence, bullying and any form of harassment are reported.
Educational Trips and Visits
Any student wishing to participate in an academy educational trip or visit will have their attendance,
punctuality and behaviour record investigated before permission is given. Only students with no
issues in any of these areas will be permitted to participate.
This policy will be kept under regular review in light of legal developments and best practice.
