Education, Shiloh DATE REVISED: 3/24/16 PRIMARY PURPOSE: Support instruction through the production of Braille and tactile graphics materials for students who are visually impaired. QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification: High school diploma or equivalent National Library of Congress Braille certification preferred but not required. Special Knowledge/Skills: Proficient in braille reading and writing. Proficient in both manual and computer braille production including textbook and literary formatting, Nemeth Code, Computer Braille Code, Code for Chemical Notation, Foreign Language code, and brailling of all subjects (excluding music). Proficient in creating tactile graphics: collage method, computer graphics, stereo copier Must have completed UEBonline.org training or comparable training to become proficient in Unified English Braille. Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines Effective communication and interpersonal skills Good organizational skills Experience: Experience with basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe; word processing, scanning and file format conversion MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Assume responsibility for the organization and operation of work within the area of supporting students and staff working with special education students following federal program guidelines as directed by the district and as specified in 34 Code of Federal Regulations §300.208 (a)(1). Transcribe materials including books, workbooks, testing materials, and classroom work for students with visual impairments Use direct entry and electronic files for braille production using a computer program Page 1 JOB TITLE: Braillist JD-736 Proofread all brailled materials in electronic form and in the embossed copy Emboss, burst, and collate brailled materials and bind as necessary Adapt and prepare braille graphics Make necessary adaptations of materials for students with visual impairments in conjunction with VI teacher Keep a log of materials submitted for brailling Schedule work load for timely delivery of materials to students Catalog and maintain inventory of VI equipment Initiate repair process of Vision Services’ equipment as needed. Order appropriate supplies for office and for braille and large-type production. Remain current in computer technology Attend workshops, professional development conferences, seminars, and training sessions pertinent to braille and largetype production in order to continually improve services. EQUIPMENT/PROGRAMS USED: Computer, printer, copier, fax and specialized scanner Specialized software and hardware to prepare Braille and other tactile materials such as but not limited to: Tyger Pro Printer for Braille graphics PC Paint to fill in graphics Corel DRAW for graphics Braille 2000 to add Braille labels to graphics Microsoft Office Microsoft Excel WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress. Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Work with frequent interruptions. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling. Prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions. Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
