Campus Renovations Celebrated

Grayson County College has completed its multi-phase, major renewal and expansion effort that has brought new life to 40-plus year old buildings and infrastructure systems, and will ensure that a quality learning environment is available for many generations of students.

the Science Building,the Center for

Interdisciplinary Studies, the Advanced

Technology Building and the Health

Science Center. The addition of the

Center for Workplace Learning and the

South Campus were all part of the early expansion focus.

GCC’s enrollment growth over the last few semesters makes the recent renovations and expansion very timely. Current students, many of whom are seeking new job skills or upgraded skills to compete for jobs and new careers, are benefitting from the improvements.

The facility revitilization initiatives occurred over the last nine years. The renovations include upgrades to each of the classroom buildings where students now have modern science labs, improved classrooms, and classroom technology that enhances learning. These occurred in the Liberal Arts Building,

The 2007 bond package then allowed the completion of a number of projects that add value to the students’ learning environment. Thanks to careful budget management, lower materials and labor costs, and historically low interest rates, the projects stayed within the budget of $44.79 million. The bond package renewal addressed baseline renovations of aging facilities, and infrastructure and site improvements; construction of a new Career and

Technology Center; Student Life Center and Library renewal; and expansion of the Fine Arts Building into an Arts and

Communication Center.

First Annual “GCC Alumni Round-Up!”

The GCC Alumni Office is working hard to update our Alumni database, and we need your help! In future issues of the Foundation Newsletter we are hoping to give GCC

Alumni the opportunity to brag about themselves and their families. We also have a large number of “Lost Alumni” that we need help locating. We’re planning to host future GCC Alumni Events and provide current and former students an opportunity to do some career networking with one another. GCC Alumni can also assist our

Office of Admissions by identifying prospective GCC students, and by assisting with local College Nights at area high schools. We’re always open to new ideas and suggestions ~ let us know how WE can help YOU!

Go Vikings!

If you, or anyone you know, is a former GCC student, please contact us at: dodsont@ grayson.edu with the following information:

Tell Us A Little Bit About Yourself and How GCC

Has Been Your “Stepping Stone to Success!”

Jon Booker ’95 – Sherman, TX Willing to visit w/GCC students about

Career Interests; Willing to host a local College Night; "I am married – wife:

Kristina; we have two boys. I am working w/MEMC in Sherman, where I have been recognized for job performance & attendance."

Stacey Snow Attended the GCC Nursing Program and is currently a House

Supervisor at Baylor Garland Health Care. Stacey has recommended one of his employees to come to Grayson. This is a great way GCC Alumni can be involved in student recruitment!

Ginger Tipler Hughes ’07 - Whitesboro, TX I am a disabled, single mother of five, with two teenagers still at home. I am a first generation woman that is going to college on a twenty year old GED education after quitting school in the ninth grade in 1987. ...GCC gave me skills needed ... After being very active in many of Grayson's wonderful organizations and committees. I have gone on to TWU and remained active on that campus as well. One of the greatest lessons that I received from the honors education while attending GCC is the importance of community involvement. Beginning my post-secondary education at GCC broadened my thinking beyond my own self and family to that of my community, state and country. I cannot thank GCC enough for opening that door for me.

Beth Bryan Taylor ’72 – Harlingen, TX Willing to visit w/GCC students about their Career Interests; Willing to host a local College Night; "I have continued to teach and work at the hospitals as an RN. I love nursing and the patients. My husband passed away in 1998 at age 49 with lung cancer. I have two children - daughter is an English Teacher and son is a Border Patrol; I have 4 Grandchildren!”

[NOTE: Some bio’s were edited for space considerations.]

GCC ALUMNI. . .UNITE!!!

Grayson County College loves to hear from

our Alumni

Debbie Morris, from Van Alstyne currently works at Collin County Community

College as Assistant Registrar.

Laci Murray ’10 – Laci majored in Psychology at GCC. She is currently attending Texas A&M-Commerce while working part-time as a receptionist at medical office. Laci states that she has not yet begun her career utilizing her degree.

Kelly Robinson ’09 – Is currently living in Pilot Point; Kelly Majored in

Mathematics at GCC, and is currently attending UNT. She plans to graduate with a BS in math in December, 2011.

Building a strong Alumni Association for GCC is an exciting challenge! However, in order to implement any effective programs or services for GCC alumni, we must have updated contact information for former GCC students. GCC Alumni can update their contact information at: www.grayson.edu > College

Foundation Offices Find New “Home”

The Foundation offices have found a new

“home” in the former President’s home, just east of the water tower and Dub Hayes

Baseball Field. The additional space creates a great meeting location for Foundation committees as well as an attractive place to hold donor receptions and get-togethers. Stop by and take a quick tour ~ we’d love to show you around!

Grants Supplement College Projects

Grants from outside resources are essential to the college’s learning environment. A review of the dollars in the graph illustrates the important work of grant writing.

Many of the grants received are dedicated to helping local business and industry train or re-train their workers in order to remain competitive in their respective industries.

Read more about some of the exciting projects being accomplished through grants later in the newesletter!

2012 Annual Scholarship Campaign Begins:

Giving HOPE for a Brighter Future

“North” and “South” Co-Chairs Gear Up for

Annual Campaign

Thanks so much for helping us give HOPE to those in need! In today’s economy, we all need “Hope” . . . but some need it more than others, as indicated in the volumes of essays that are submitted with scholarship applications from prospective students who hope there is a way for them to learn the necessary skills they will need to enter the workforce and make a better life for themselves and their families. When you receive the 2012 Annual Campaign brochure in the mail, won’t you please take just a moment to consider how you might like to help?

Your tax-deductible contribution – no matter the size – will be deeply appreciated.

Scholarship Giving Levels

This chart illustrates the various endowment levels and the annual award each level generates. The annual award levels are also the amount it takes to establish an annually funded “named” scholarship. Your contribution may be designated either as a “general” scholarship, or you may specify limited criteria (ie: academic program, minimum GPA, etc.)

One-time gifts, in any amount, are also greatly appreciated and will be pooled in the

Foundation’s Viking Scholarship Fund for distribution to GCC students with financial need, who may not be eligible for any other scholarship support.

Grants Enhance College Programs

National Endowment for the Art: $10,000

Grayson County College and area industries sponsored the first high school welding rodeo in

March 2011. As a result of the success of the first event, the National

Endowment for the Arts invited Grayson County

College to submit a matching grant to support the 2012 Welding Rodeo.

A grant for $10,000 was received on September 5,

2011. will take place at the end of the event with scholarship awards presented to the first, second and third place winners. An auction of the final designs will be conducted to generate funds to be placed in the welding scholarship fund for future events.

This year’s project consists of two special events.

The first event, held on

December 7, 2011, offered a preparatory drawing and design workshop for nearly 100 high school students. Three seminars were conducted including a preliminary thumbnail sketch design session; a

3-D drawing session and creation of a maquette

(sculpted piece out of cardboard); and a welding safety seminar. Art courses were taught by the GCC

The GCC Welding

Rodeo affords high school students the opportunity to be recognized for their unique welding skills.

The grant support from the National Endowment for the Arts enhanced the overall project by

A portion of the NEA grant funding was used to provide art supply kits for each student to plan their competition designs. At the end of the day’s instruction, an exhibition of metal sculptures was presented by area artists and a general session in which each artist described their unique sculpting techniques.

The GCC Welding

Rodeo Competition will be held April

ATT Foundation:

$10,000

GCC Enrollment Specialists will soon be able to conduct mobile career planning and college registration opportunities thanks to the receipt of a $10,000 grant from the ATT Foundation. The

GCC Mobile Registration

Center including a portable computer lab, mobile hot spot, and remote display will become viable tools of the enrollment specialist who visit area high schools. Presentations will be offered on a variety of topics at area high schools in the GCC service area including:

“The Road to College” which explains standards and testing, required courses, developmental education, and application requirements for college eligibility; “How to Pay for College” reviews the different ways to pay for higher education, with an emphasis on obtaining scholarships and financial aid; and “What is the Right

College for My Child?” presents a checklist for parents and students to consider when selecting the most appropriate postsecondary college to attend.

Since its inception in 2003, the Access to Success

Multicultural Initiative has sought effective methods to enhance the ease of student transition from high school to postsecondary education.

With these added tools, guidance provided by the GCC multicultural outreach program staff will empower students to initiate a personal course of action, set career goals, perform financial aid research, and learn how to register for college.

Dr. Renfro Receives

French Award

Dr. Roy Renfro received the International Cognac Author of the Year Award for 2011 from the Bureau National

Interprofessionnel du Cognac. The honor was presented to him Sept. 15 before 750 guests during the annual La Part des Anges gala at Chateau Monnet in Cognac, France.

The focus of a hospitality and culinary degree student is, essentially, the art of pleasing others. According to the National

Restaurant Association (NRA),

California, Texas, and New York top the U.S. charts for restaurant sales. Additionally, the NRA says that the highest growth among dining establishments will occur in western and southern states, with Texas,

Nevada, Arizona, and Florida seeing the highest growth by 2018. So special thanks goes to the Grayson

County College leadership for their proactive planning to address this emerging growth industry!

The award salutes Renfro’s 30 years of research and writing on Munson and the phylloxera epidemic that nearly destroyed the world’s vineyards in the late 19th century; his role in the development of the Munson

Memorial; and the publication of his book, Grape Man of Texas: Thomas Volney Munson and the Origins of

American Viticulture. Co-written by Renfro and Sherrie

McLeRoy, the book won a Gourmand Award in 2004.

In 2008, an expanded edition won a Gourmand Award as “the best wine history book written in the world over the past 12 years.” A French edition of the book will be published in 2012.

Catherine Le Page, BNIC director, lauded Renfro as an

‘ecrivain et historien’ (writer and historian). In addition to commending his Munson biography, she cited his dedication to historical accuracy in his work about events that led to the eradication of phylloxera from the Charente region of France. She also thanked him for encouraging tourism to Cognac since 1988, thus stimulating the region’s economy.

“I thank the BNIC for this great honor,” Renfro said.

“It has been a wonderful twenty-five years of friendship and historical research that culminated in the first biography of Munson, which relates his historical partnership with M. Pierre Viala, the French Minister of Agriculture and eminent French scientist. Their collaboration led to the successful grafting of French vines to Texas grapevine rootstocks.”

Renfro also thanked GCC and the W. B. Munson

Foundation for support throughout the years. In addition to his role at the Munson Center, he is the college’s vice president of resource and community development and serves as executive director of the GCC Foundation.
