Chair Van Alphen called the meeting to order and acknowledged that we were on the territory of
the Okanagan First People.

PRESENTATIONS BY SCHOOLS AND/OR STUDENTS
3.1.
Changing Results for Young Readers
Kirsten Odian, Early Learning and Literacy Helping Teacher, provided an overview of
Changing Results for Young Readers, a provincial initiative in which the district has been
involved for the past three years. Funding was through the BCED plan and 57 districts in
BC are involved. Ms. Odian worked with three new schools this past year as well as
some returning schools. The focus is on increasing the number of engaged, successful

readers through extending opportunities for teachers to collaborate and work through the
inquiry process.
Following a number of trustee questions, Ms. Odian was thanked for her presentation
and assistance for teachers and students.

10.1.
Field Trips
The superintendent reviewed the listing of field trip requests included in the agenda
package, one of which had been approved pursuant to district policy.

That the field trip request for September 29 to October 10, 2015, for 12
Grade 10 to 12 students from Penticton Secondary, Princess Margaret
Secondary, and Summerland Secondary schools to travel to Kyoto,
Ikeda, and Tokyo, Japan, on a sister city exchange be approved in
principle.

10.2.
School District No. 67 Innovation Grants
Director of Instruction MacIntyre provided an update on the development of the criteria for
the Innovation Grants that are funded by the district. It was suggested that the inquiry
based model should be used and there may be an opportunity to use a small amount of
money from other district funds to tie in with the innovation grants. It is intended that the
draft document be brought to the Board in April, with the funds out in May and June, and
a start date in September.
10.3.
2015 BC/Alberta Tour – Maladjusted

The superintendent provided information regarding a production that focuses on
humanizing mental health which is touring BC and Alberta. The group will be performing
in Penticton on March 15, 7:30 p.m. at the Shatford Centre.
10.4.
Keeping Kids in School: K to 12 Professional Development Forum
This district forum focuses on continuing to explore promising practices that keep kids in
school and hopeful about their futures. The session will take place on Thursday,
February 12, from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m., at IMC, and will look at data searching for what best
meets the needs of the district’s most at-risk students.
10.5.
Okanagan Valley Concert Band Festival
Middle and secondary school concert bands from throughout the Pacific Northwest will be
performing at the Cleland Theatre on March 3 and 4, 2015. On March 3 at 12:00 noon,
there will be an Okanagan Concert Band Festival Mass Band. Led by the Penticton
Senior Concert Band (Princess Margaret and Penticton Secondary Combined Band), all
bands will participate in a commissioned piece written by two music teachers in
Penticton, Justin Glibbery and Stan Sabourin. The Kwantlen Polytechnical University
Wind Ensemble will stage two shows, March 3, at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Tickets cost
$5.00 each.
10.6.
French Immersion
Director of Instruction MacIntyre reported on the Late French Immersion registration
process and numbers for 2015-16. At the registration deadline for Penticton and
Summerland (Monday, February 2, at noon), 120 students were registered, 118 from
within the district and another two from outside of the district. There were 75 students
registered for KVR Middle School and 45 for Summerland Middle School. There will be
two classes of 30 at KVR and one class at SMS and the fourth class will be determined
through a random selection process with the fourth class being held where the majority of
the last 30 students want to attend. Parents need to confirm the registrations by April 15.
10.7.
Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement – Signing Ceremony
School District No. 67 is happy to announce that a signing ceremony for the renewal of
the Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement will be held. It was intended for
March 11, 2015 from noon to 3:00 p.m., and now will be rescheduled to a date in April.
Appreciation was extended to Principal Tenning and others who worked on this
agreement.
10.8.
2015-16 School Calendar
Assistant Superintendent Burgoyne provided an overview of the 2015-16 draft school
calendar, which would begin on September 8, provide for five professional development
days inside the calendar, include a two-week spring break, and contain two closure days
for the BC Winter Games to be held on February 25 and 26, 2016. An extra ten minutes
of instruction per day compared to the 2013-14 school calendar is required for this draft
calendar, which will be posted on the district website for feedback until March 3, 2015.

10.9.
Science Fair Season Begins!
Schools in SD67 will be presenting their projects in the District Science Fair on March 5,
3:15 to 8:30 p.m., at Summerland Secondary School. The Science Fair, sponsored
jointly by the school district and the Kiwanis Clubs of Penticton and Summerland,
features original science projects by local students from Grades 6 and up. Several of
these projects will be selected to proceed to the Central Okanagan Regional Fair to be
held at Summerland Secondary on April 11, 2015, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The
Canada-Wide Science Fair will be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick, for grades 7 to
12, from May 11 to 16, 2015. The Science Fair is a fun way to add inquiry and
exploration into the science curriculum or as a "fun club" in the school. As well, efforts
are underway to organize another Elementary Science Expo (K -5) for elementary
students who would like to do a science project. This event is usually held in mid-May.
10.10. High School CPR and AED Program
The superintendent advised that the Advanced Coronary Treatment (ACT) Foundation
will be providing a Teacher Training Workshop in Penticton, which will provide the
training teachers require to teach the ACT High School CPR and AED Program to their
students. Implementation of the program is made possible by support from ACT's
community, provincial and health partners. The lead community partner is TELUS
Thompson Okanagan Community Board, the provincial partner is BC Emergency Health
Services, BC Ambulance Service and the health partners are AstraZeneca Canada,
Pfizer Canada, and Sanofi Canada.
11.
REPORT OF SECRETARY-TREASURER
11.1.
2014-15 Amended Annual Budget
The secretary-treasurer reviewed a document entitled “Variance Analysis – 2014-15
Amended Annual Budget vs. 2014-15 Annual Budget” which showed the variations of the
two budgets. The enrolment is down by 139.375 which would lower the funding from the
Ministry of Education; however, because the district is under funding protection, it makes
a difference of only $854. The changes to the budget total $1,657,875 as well as a
transfer of $249,841 to capital. The total amount of the budget is $63,809,990.

13.2.
BCSTA Thompson Okanagan Branch Meeting
The BCSTA Thompson Okanagan Branch meeting will be held on February 27 and 28,
2015, in Vernon.
13.3.
BCPSEA Meetings
Trustee Manning reported that she and Trustee Planiden attended the BCPSEA 21st
Annual General Meeting held on January 30, 2015 in Richmond. As a follow-up to the
resolution from School District No. 23 (Central Okanagan), SD58 and SD67 put forth an
amendment which would change the model proposed to an interim model.
13.4.
Meeting with City of Penticton
Chair Van Alphen reported that the Board had met with the City of Penticton mayor and
council on January 26, 2015 and discussed the electrical fees structure and the pressure
that electrical fees are making on young families; the use of reclaimed water for Princess
Margaret Secondary, Skaha Lake Middle, and Parkway Elementary school fields; quality
of school fields in general; and appointment of a trustee on an affordable communities
taskforce, if there is an interested trustee.

Trustee Comments
Trustees provided comments related to district activities including Trustee Clarke’s
attendance at the monthly meeting at the Shatford Centre and progress on their kitchen
construction; Trustee Johnson’s upcoming attendance at the monthly meeting of the BC
Winter Games; and Trustee Manning’s attendance at the West Bench Elementary “Books
and Bagels”. Trustee Sheppard promoted the Healthy Living Fair on March 14 and
requested trustees wear a purple wristband to promote discussions on eating disorders.
Chair Van Alphen reported she had attended an advisory planning committee at
Summerland and promoted the Summerland Secondary School’s “Beauty and the
Beast”.
INFORMATION ITEMS
14.1.
Recognition of Student Success
School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha) extended congratulations to the students and
groups for outstanding examples of success as shown on the listing circulated with the
agenda package.
14.2.
Recognition of Student Artwork
Congratulations were extended to the students from Trout Creek Elementary School for
their artwork currently on display at the school board office.
14.3.
