Course Synopsis: This course is designed to introduce the basics of the art curriculum through the historical development of photography. Photography will augment students’ knowledge of art and design using photography techniques through the image development of photographic images. Students will use a variety of photographic techniques to create meaningful imagery. In addition to taking pictures, students will learn how to develop negatives and prints in the traditional darkroom style, and will manipulate digital images to create a video story. Classes will focus on experiential learning through practical demonstrations and labs. Evaluation will be based on performance in both group and individual settings. This course is intended to interface with Career and Personal Planning 10 and 11; offering students an opportunity to explore visual imagery through a 2 credit option. BAA [ Course Name and Grade Level ] Framework 1 Rationale: The aim Photography is to allow students the opportunity to apply knowledge, skills and attitudes which will enable them to gain a visual understanding of the imagery and techniques employed throughout the world. Students will be exposed to a variety of technology which will enable them to gain a better understanding of visual concepts and photographic techniques that are still available today. The culmination of this exploration will be to create a muli-media digital presentation that includes the elements and principles of design, using technology readily available and used in the industry today. The skills acquired through practical lab work and co-operative learning will enhance the student’s ability to create better visual images for their future family pictures, and to expose them to the potential of a media career. Organizational Structure: Unit/Topic Title Time Unit 1 Pin-hole camera and no camera photography 10 hours Unit 2 Elements of design (35 ml camera) 6 hours Unit 3 Principles of design (35 ml camera) 6 hours Unit 4 National Geographic techniques (35 ml and digital camera) 20 hours Unit 5 Music video (still photography with digital camera) 18 hours Total Hours 60 hours Unit/Topic/Module Descriptions: Unit 1: Pin-hole camera and no camera photography Time: 10 hours Overview Students will explore creating photographic images using a variety of techniques that do not use traditional cameras. The teacher will demonstrate products and techniques and the students will show their learning through practical labs. Some of the photographic techniques which may be included in this unit are: Pin-hole cameras, camera-less sandwiches, and photogram. Students will learn basic darkroom techniques using enlargers and will develop prints using traditional darkroom chemicals. Curriculum Organizers and Learning Outcomes Problem Solving It is expected that students will: Create a working pin-hole camera using a tin can Create several photo images using non-camera techniques Communication It is expected that students will: use tools such as the enlarger, pin-hole camera, and developing trays to create personally meaningful imagery use appropriate language when discussing the technology related to developing photo imagery Technology It is expected that students will: use the appropriate tool, technique and method when creating each of the photo techniques maintain an orderly and safe darkroom when developing their images Self and Society It is expected students will: Demonstrate knowledge of the technology used to create photographic images Demonstrate an interest in exploring their environment in search of meaningful and exciting imagery. BAA [ Course Name and Grade Level ] Framework 2 Unit 2: Elements of design (35 ml camera) Time: 6 hours Overview Students will explore personally meaningful imagery through an understanding of the Elements of design (Line, texture, value, shape, colour, and space). The teacher will demonstrate the basics of 35 ml photography, and the students will photograph images that demonstrate their knowledge of the elements of design. Students will compare and contrast their imagery in co-operative group assignment to be presented to the class as a poster of their learning. Curriculum Organizers and Learning Outcomes Problem Solving It is expected that students will: identify similarities and differences in the use of the elements of design in their imagery use appropriate criteria of the elements of design when evaluating their imagery Communication It is expected that students will: use a 35 ml camera and successfully take pictures manipulating fstop and shutter speeds. use appropriate language when discussing the elements of design. Technology It is expected that students will: use the appropriate tool, technique and method when creating their personally meaningful imagery use a 35 ml camera properly remove film from a 35 ml camera load a developing tank by themselves in the dark develop negatives properly store negatives use an enlarger to create a properly exposed image Self and Society It is expected students will: demonstrate knowledge of the use of a 35 ml camera. demonstrate a willingness to maintain the cleanliness of the darkroom demonstrate a willingness to work with a group of students in a team project Unit 3: Principles of design (35 ml camera) Time: 6 hours Overview Students will explore personally meaningful imagery through an understanding of the Principles of Design (unity, balance, pattern, rhythm, emphasis). The teacher will demonstrate advanced techniques in 35 ml photography, and the students will photograph images that demonstrate their knowledge of the Principles of Design. Students will compare and contrast their imagery in co-operative group assignment to be presented to the class as a poster of their learning. Curriculum Organizers and Learning Outcomes Problem Solving It is expected that students will: identify similarities and differences in the use of the principles of design in their imagery use appropriate criteria of the elements and principles of design when evaluating their imagery Communication It is expected that students will: use a 35 ml camera to manipulate depth and shutter speed in a variety of lighting conditions. use appropriate language when discussing the principles of design. Technology It is expected that students will: use the appropriate tool, technique and method when creating their personally meaningful imagery BAA [ Course Name and Grade Level ] Framework 3 Self and Society As in Unit 2 Unit 4: National Geographic techniques (35 ml and digital camera) Time: 20 hours Overview Students will explore personally meaningful imagery through an understanding of the techniques used by photographers for National Geographic (leading lines, framing, viewpoint, rule of thirds, blur and shadows) The teacher will demonstrate the art of taking more advanced photographic images. The teacher will also demonstrate the use of a digital camera and the technology associated with displaying and saving digital imagery. Students will compare and contrast their imagery in co-operative group assignment to be presented to the class as a poster of their learning, and will create an animation sequence using people (pixilation) in a simple repeating activity. Curriculum Organizers and Learning Outcomes Problem Solving It is expected that students will: identify similarities and differences in the use of the elements, principles and national geographic design techniques in their imagery use appropriate criteria of the elements and principles of design when evaluating their imagery using the National Geographic techniques. Communication It is expected that students will: use a 35 ml camera and a digital camera to successfully take pictures manipulating fstop and shutter speeds. Use a tri-pod to create a simple animation sequence use the appropriate language of the elements and principles of design when discussing their imagery. Technology It is expected that students will: use the appropriate tool, technique and method when creating their personally meaningful imagery use a tri-pod correctly use a digital camera download their images on a computer use Imageready in Photoshop to create video clips use IMovie to put their movie together Self and Society As in Unit 2 Unit 5: Music video (still photography with digital camera) Time: 18 hours Overview Students will explore story telling in a multi-media platform that uses digital imagery and create a music video. The teacher will demonstrate products and techniques and the students will show their learning through the completion of a music video. Some of the products which may be included in this unit are: digital cameras, tri-pods, Photoshop, Imageready, Imovie, video editing, sound editing. Students will create a music video that will be presented to the class, and possibly appear in one of our film festivals.
