PAGE 8 STATE COLLEGE NEWS,FRIDAY, OCTOBER Senate: 'Senate-Go-Round' Includes Discussion Of SUB Activities, Camp Board Committee By BOB IIL'NEKE Report, Talk, T a b l e At this weeks meeting, Senate discussed m a n y , many, m a n y topics, reversed its a t t i t u d e on one of them, and came to some conclusions on a few. Accomplishments T h e first t h i n g done by Senate was to swear in the newly elected senators. As usual, not all of the senators were present at this session. A request from S t u d e n t Union Board was t h e n announced, asking for $100 to be used to hire a band for a dance on October 24. Senate discussed the advantages of holding dances on weekends when nothing else is scheduled. Members of SUB pointed out t h a t a total of almost 600 people attended the last two such dances, and t h a t since they were so successful, they should be continued. It was pointed out t h a t SUB asked for a floating fund to provide for such dances a couple of weeks ago and that, at t h a t time, Senate refused to allocate funds. If Senate decided to give SUB this money it would be reversing its former decision. After more discussion t h e motion was put to a vote and passed. This, of course, m e a n t t h a t S e n a t e had contradicted a former decision. C a m p Board A committee was set up to meet with C a m p Board to discuss future legislation concerning State's camp a t Dippikill. T h e first topic reported on was the request by the Business D e p a r t m e n t t h a t S t u d e n t Association buy its own duplicating m a c h i n e . A decision was postponed until the m a t t e r could be further investigated. Sayles Dorm Names Slate T h e following have been a n n o u n ced as officers of Sayles Hall for the 1959-00 term. T h e S e c r e t a r y - T r e a s u r e r is Paul F l a t h m a n , and Athletic Director is Gary Penfield; both are freshmen. Sayles Events Sunday, October 25, t h e men of Sayles Hall will hold an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited. T h e Sayles D a t e Party will be held Friday, November l.'i. LEARN ABOUT YOUR CHOSEN PROFESSION FROM THE RETURNING TEACHERS at the SNACK BAR during "HOMECOMING WEEKEND" A report was t h e n given concerning the proposed p a y m e n t by S t u d e n t Association of all or p a r t of the costs of sending representatives to the Eastern States Science Conference. After quite a bit of discussion it was pointed out t h a t S e n a t e should not commit itself until more information is available. Another report was given concerning the proposal t h a t S t a t e join the National S t u d e n t Association. T h e merits of this organization were pointed out and S e n a t e decided to contact other colleges which belong to this organization and to postpone further action to a later date. The hard-fought games are receiving increasingly avid following as the season progresses. It also was long overdue for State fans, who have not seen Plattsburgh beaten in any sport for over a year, and marked a note of personal triumph for Frank Fallace who booted a goal to show that he is returning to the form that earned him high scoring honors last season. J FRIDAY, O C T O B E R Hamilton Discusses Family, School, College Football By DAVID FELDMAN Monday afternoon I talked with Dr. Thomas Hale Hamilton, the President of the State University, in his comfortable and modern, though not modernistic, office at Thurlow Terrace. We discussed such subjects as his scholastic background, his family, his views on a university education and even college football. Dr. Hamilton, who throughout the one-half hour long interview puffed relaxingly on a big pipe enjoys talking about the role of the university and often quotes Saint Augustine on this subject. Dr. Hamilton believes that the university is to be concerned with knowing, not "feeling or willing." He said that the public university, even more than the privately endowed one, should have a symbiotic rather than parisitic relationship with the society, each working with the other for the good of both. Or as St. Augustine T h e S t u d e n t Union Hoard will lie participating again tins year at the Conference of Associations ol College Unions to be held November ti through November ti in New York City. I,oeli Student Union, which is being assisted by Could Student Center and the Metropolitan New Yolk A S H , is the host. T h e purpose ol the conference is for member schools ul the association to meet together in order to discuss and develop plans and programs for the student unions. T h i s year's theme is "The College Union and the Student," and "The. Region." Discussion groups have been set up to cover these main fields. T h e delegates will also have an opportunity to tour the S t u d e n t Union Building of N.Y.U., Columbia, and City College. 30, VOL. 1959 XLIV, NO. 21 Pierce, Brubacher, Alden U n i v e r s i t y , Schedule Formals Tomorrow and his respect for tho students so t h a t die teacher a t t a i n s a certain h u m a n dignity which neither teacher nor s t u d e n t will violate. Education Do Pauw University was the scene of Dr. Hamilton's first higher education studies. There he received his A.B. in 1936. Following this he worked in private industry for a few years, b u t returned to a scholastic life upon entering the University of Chicago. Ho received his M.A. there in 1940. Thereafter he became; an instructor on G o v e r n m e n t a t Lawrence College with a salary, he told me, of $1800 per year. He later became the Assistant D e a n of Admissions, P l a c e m e n t and Public and Alumni Relations there. This was followed by three years as a n officer in the Navy and a ret u r n to Chicago where he received his Doctorate on the governing of universities. After this, Dr. Hamilton held administrative and teaching posts at University College (a p a r t of the University of Chicago), C h a t h a m College in Pittsburgh, and until 1959 was associated with Michigan State University as Assistant Dean, Dean of the Basic School, Director of S u m m e r Session, and finally VicePresident of Academic Affairs until August 1959 when lie became President of the State University.
