H um phrey or any other D emocrat desiring W hite House residence would seek th e support of the New York S enator before th a t of any other top Democrat. The Senator’s effectiveness as a campaigner, his capacity for a t tracting people, his strong personal organization, all these qualities he holds to a higher degree th a n any other single cam paigner in either th e Democratic or Republican ranks. Kennedy’s Importance to the Democrats is so significant th a t th e pa-os believe th a t if President Johnson were drafted and ra n again he, too, would stop first a t the Kennedy door to seek sup port.
