E-News on the Lane Highlights from the week at Indian Lane Fourth Grade Celebration of Music Concert March 14-18, 2016 Spirit Wear is on sale now! Today is the last day to order. Message from our Principal This was an exciting week at Indian Lane. As students anticipated the upcoming Spring Break, the 4th Graders treated their parents to a wonderful performance led by Mrs. Battavio. The 4th Grade Celebration of Music performance highlighted the musical talents of our Indian Lane Students. The week ended with another visit from the Bobcat at our monthly Bobcat Pride Breakfast. Parents and students were treated to breakfast and had the opportunity to have their picture taken with the Bobcat. I hope everyone has a safe break and enjoys their time together with the family. From our Classrooms Kindergarten Kindergarten students met Mr. V this week. He taught us his sound and even told us some words that start with the letter V. Children brought in things from home that begin with the letter V. We started Topic 8 in math. The students are continuing to add and subtract. They were looking at each picture equation carefully to determine if they needed to add or subtract. First Grade The first grade students have been so excited for their new writing unit. They are learning the different parts of a friendly letter. We even sung a cute version of The Adams Family song to help us remember the five parts (Heading, Greeting, Body, Closing, Signature). Each student was assigned a pen pal from another first grade class. Everyday the students have been receiving a letter from their pen pal. Who doesn‛t love getting fun mail? They learned to first, read the letter. Second, they had to slow down and think about their response and then they could write back. They are getting so good at answering questions in complete sentences and asking their pen pal questions in return. The final step was to be sure they reread their letter before sending it off for delivery. The students loved getting to know more about other first grade students. There is no better way to grow as a writer than to write for a real purpose and for a real audience (a peer, no less!). Second Grade In case we don‛t say it enough, we appreciate our Tools for Success parents very much ! This week we focused on common nouns, proper nouns, adverbs and contractions. We assessed our time and money unit and began Topic 9, Numbers to 1,000 . We worked on making sense of the information we read about in our nonfiction books. We began our Native American unit by being introduced to the origins of Native Americans and their views on using and respecting the natural resources in their different regions. Have a great Spring Break! :) Third Grade Third graders began Topic 13 in math this week; we are learning about equivalent fractions. In Reading, we are reviewing test prep strategies that will also help us to become stronger readers. Some strategies include reading closely, identifying the central message or theme of a story; etc. In Writing, we reviewed and practiced Narrative writing pieces again. In the afternoons, we completed Grammar lessons related to subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, adverbs and commas. Third graders are strongly encouraged to finish their Review Packets over the break. Fourth Grade Fourth graders have spent the week working on passages for PSSA in reading, focusing on reading strategies, identifying text structures and reviewing previously learned reading skills. Writing focused on using text based evidence and making sure that all paragraphs are reread to be on prompt and organized well. We finished the week with learning to perform to excellence, with our Spring Music Concert. What an amazing celebration of music by every 4th grader! Fifth Grade Fifth graders have all received instruction from our district technology guru, Mr. O‛Neill, on Google Classroom. We have been using Google Classroom to assignment both individual and collaborative assignments. Students have also been submitting work through Google Forms. Ask your child about this fun and engaging way to work and collect information! Science Fair Project proposal forms were due last week.
