Principal’s Message
Spring has sprung! It will be a very busy season for everyone and we hope the
sunshine is here to stay!
We are excited about the launch of our “Uplands Marathon” as the weather permits our school-wide running program to resume. Daily Physical Activity may be a
Ministry of Education requirement but we see great success in student selfregulation and academic focus as a result of daily exercise. The Marathon is just
one more way we can motivate students to adopt healthy lifestyle habits early.
Celebrating successes go hand in hand with goal setting. Every time we make
progress towards improvement, in any area, it is important to take time to reflect
on how it feels. Going on a family walk or even driving to activities are good opportunities to talk about all of the positive things happening for everyone and how
it makes us all feel about ourselves and our learning.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lisa Edwards

Next Year Planning
It may seem like a long way off, but we are in the early stages of planning for
next year.
You can help us by:
• Letting us know if you are planning to move before September 2016.
• If you know people who have moved into our area, but have kept their children at another school for the rest of this school year, have them register at Uplands now for September 2016.
• If you know people with kindergarten aged children, encourage them to register now for September 2016.
The deadline for transfer requests in Wednesday, April 15th. Please contact the
office for more information.

TRANSFER REQUESTS
The window for students requesting transfers from their catchment area school to another school in
School District No. 67 for the September 2016/2017 school year is 8:00 am, February 1, 2016 to
4:00 pm, April 15, 2016. Transfer requests received prior to February 1st will be date/time stamped as
“February 1st, 2016, 8:00 a.m.” and transfer requests received after April 15th may not be considered until
September 2016. Although a sibling’s attendance at a school will be given priority as per Choice and Flexibility Policy #305, it should not be assumed that the transfer is approved. A transfer request still needs to be
completed and must go through the transfer process. If you are unsure, please check with your school secretary.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha)
Children born in 2011 are eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2016. Parents, who feel their
child is not yet ready for kindergarten, may defer enrollment for one year. Please contact Wendy Hyer (7707700) at the School Board Office for information on this.
Placement in your neighborhood school kindergarten is based on your address and registration date. The
earlier you register, the more likely your child will attend a school close to your home.
Register at your neighborhood school during regular school hours. A birth certificate will be required as
well as your child’s BC Care Card, parental BC Care Card and proof of address (i.e. driver’s license,
utility bill, lease agreement).
READY SET LEARN
Uplands will host the Ready, Set, Learn Program supported by the Ministry of Education, for
families of 3 or 4 years olds on April 14th from 10:45am–12:00 pm. School staff members will
join together with a variety of community partners to present valuable information to parents/
caregivers of 3 and 4 year olds, and provide fun stations/story telling for the children. Please
call the school to register. There is a registration form on page 6 of this newsletter.

ADDITIONAL NON-INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS
Earlier this school year the Ministry of Education announced 10 hours of non-instructional time to help prepare teachers for the implementation of the revised curriculum. As schools will be closed to students for
two days to facilitate this process, changes have been made to school and district calendars throughout the Province.
At the February 1, 2016 Public Board Meeting, the Board of Education passed a motion that approved
the following two dates as the additional non-instructional days:
Wednesday, April 27, 2016 and Tuesday, May 24, 2016

TICK SEASON
Please be aware that Spring is wood tick season. Ticks live in tall grass and wooded areas. Ticks burrow part way into the skin and
can carry diseases. Check clothing and scalp when leaving an area where ticks live. With the weather being so warm
this Winter we have already found a few ticks at the School. Please be awre that because of the mild Winter there
may be more than usual. If a tick is found on your Child:



Clean area with soap and water, and disinfect. Wash hands.
Use tweezers to gently get a hold of the tick as close to the skin as possible. Don’t touch the tick with your hands.
Without squeezing the tick, steadily lift it straight off the skin. Avoid jerking it out. Try to make sure that all of the tick is removed.
If the tick is burrowed deep into skin, it is advisable to have a doctor remove it.

Our PAC has several roles to fill for September 2016. We would like to encourage people to consider taking on a role so that we
can continue to receive our Gaming Funding from the government. This Gaming money affords us the opportunity to pay for field
trips and necessary classroom resources. Specifically, we will need a new Hot Lunch Coordinator. It would be really beneficial for
us to fill that role now so that they can receive some training from our current Hot Lunch Coordinator. The Chair and Treasurer
positions will receive mentorship next year as they move through the year. We should be finished with the playground initiative
next year so PAC responsibilities will not be as onerous as they may have appeared to be for the last couple of years. We would
also like to encourage more parents to get involved, especially those from the primary grades. We are a friendly group that values
input and feedback from others. When we have more people willing to help in anyway they can, jobs for everyone are smaller!
Attending PAC also keeps you in the loop as to what’s happening at the school and gives you to the opportunity to influence how
our money is spent. If you are interested in any of these roles or want additional information, please email Sherie Seddon at
sherie9@hotmail.com. You do not need any experience or special qualifications, anyone can fill these roles.
