BC Games Spirit Day #2

Term 2 Report Cards home

Open Board Meeting – Decision

Last day before Spring Break 

School Reopens

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Thanks to all of the parents and guardians who have been diligent by calling in to report absences and lates. We really appreciate your help and have been able be complete our Safe Arrival checks in a timely fashion. Flu bugs have hit our school but we are hopeful that the long weekend for students helped them rest and recover.

Term 2 Report Cards will be sent home on Wednesday, March 9. Please review the report card with your child, sign the envelope and return it to school. As this date is close to Spring Break it might be good to send it back the next day so it doesn’t get lost over the break. As always if you have any questions or concerns please communicate with your child’s teacher.

After all of the hard work this term I hope you and your family are able to spend some time together enjoying this beautiful area we live in. Spring is close and it’s a great time to be outside!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lisa Edwards

Principal

SAFE ARRIVAL

Please call the school office at 250-770-7678 to advise if you child is going to be away or late for school for any reason. This includes absence due to illness. If no one answers, please leave a message so that we are aware of the absence. Thank you very much!

STUDENT PLANNERS

Please use your student’s planner to inform your child’s teacher of important information regarding your child. If you are picking up your child early for doctor appointments or other activities or have a change in their normal routine we ask that you simply put a note in the planner. Play dates should be arranged the night before with all parents involved. We do not permit students to make play dates from school as it causes a disruption for parents.

Please also discuss these changes or arrangements with your child. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

ADDITIONAL NON-INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS

TO SUPPORT IMPLEMENTATION OF THE REDESIGNED CURRICULUM

Earlier this school year the Ministry of Education announced 10 hours of noninstructional time to help prepare teachers for the implementation of the revised curriculum. As schools will be closed to students for two days to facilitate this process, changes have been made to school and district calendars throughout the Province.

At the February 1, 2016 Public Board Meeting, the Board of Education passed a motion that approved the following two dates as the additional noninstructional days:

Wednesday, April 27, 2016, and

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

SWIM C LUB

I nterested in joining a Summer Swim Club? The Penticton

Opportunities to attend swim meets are offered to all participants. Our season begins May 2 nd . Registration is on Sun., April 17 th from

4:30-6:30pm at Penticton Community Centre. Find out more at http://www.pentictonpikes.com

READY SET LEARN

Uplands will host the Ready, Set, Learn Program supported by the Ministry of

Education, for families of 3 or 4 years olds on April 14 th from 10:45am–12:00 pm.

School staff members will join together with a variety of community partners to present valuable information to parents/caregivers of 3 and 4 year olds, and provide fun stations/story telling for the children. Please call the school to register. There is a registration form on page 6 of this newsletter.

PINK SHIRT DAY

Wednesday, February 24 th , was Pink Shirt Day.

Staff, students and parents wore pink to promote kindness. Throughout the day, all around the school, there were discussions, stories and activities which focused on the importance of treating others with respect.

Not treating people kindly is a problem in all aspects of society and school is a great place to begin teaching about ways we can all make a difference in the lives of others.

BASKETBALL

Our grade 4/5 Basketball teams had a great season. Our final wind-up was Saturday,

February 20 th . We played games against each other and celebrated with a treat!

CHESS CLUB

Chess club is now over for the year. Thanks to Ms. Crockett for once again running our chess club. We will be looking for a new parent volunteer to run this very popular club next winter. Please let Mrs. Edwards know if you are interested.

HAND-WASHING

The flu bug continues to affect many students at our school. Interior Health reminds us that hand-washing is the single best way to stop the spread of germs. Please talk to your children about the importance of washing their hands before eating, after using the washroom or when they cough or sneeze. We will continue to insist that students wash their hands frequently at school as well.

Kindergarten Registration

School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha)

K

INDERGARTEN

R

EGISTRATION

Children born in 2011 are eligible to enter kindergarten in September 2016.

Parents, who feel their child is not yet ready for kindergarten, may defer enrollment for one year. Please contact Wendy Hyer (250-770-7700) at the School Board Office for information on this.

Placement in your neighborhood school kindergarten is based on your address and registration date. The earlier you register, the more likely your child will attend a school close to your home.

Register at your neighborhood school during regular school hours. A birth certificate will be required as well as your child’s BC Care Card, parental BC Care Card and proof of address (i.e. driver’s license, utility bill, lease agreement).

Transfer Requests

The window for students requesting transfers from their catchment / current school to another school in

School District No. 67 for the September 2016 / 2017 school year is 8:00am, February 1, 2016 to

4:00pm , April 15, 2016. Transfer requests received prior to February 1 will be date / time stamped as

“February 1, 2016, 8:00am” and transfer requests received after April 15 may not be considered until

September 2016. Although a sibling’s attendance at a school will be given priority as per Choice and

Flexibility Policy #305, it should not be assumed that the transfer is approved. A transfer request still needs to be completed and must go through the transfer process. If you are unsure, please check with your school secretary.
