PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Fall is in the air and we are all settling into our schedules and routines at school. I hope that as a family you
are finding time for activities as well as “down-time” to enjoy together. Sometimes we get caught up in the
hustle and bustle of our busy lives and forget to take time to connect to others.
We are currently looking for someone to fill a Noon Hour Supervision position at Uplands.
If you enjoy working with students, are available daily from 12:15 – 1:00pm and are
interested in being part of our team at noon hour please apply by sending your resume to
Colleen Wiens, Human Resources Manager at the School Board Office by email
cwiens@summer.com or by dropping it off at 425 Jermyn Avenue. A criminal record check
will also need to be completed separately from the one for Uplands School. I would be
happy to answer any questions or concerns you might have.
Many of you are aware of our School District’s consideration of school closures, reconfigurations and
boundary changes in order to address declining enrollment. There are many ways for you to learn about the
options the School Board Trustees have brought forward for public consultation. Feedback on the various
options can be provided in several ways as well. The SD67 homepage banner “From Challenge to
Opportunity” provides links to an online survey as well as handouts from meetings held earlier this month.
Upcoming meeting dates, times and locations are listed as well as the purpose of each session. A final
decision will be announced at an Open Public Board Meeting on January 20, 2016.
Also, a huge thank you to all families who ordered magazines and digital subscriptions through our QSP
fundraiser. All profits are used to support activities in the school that otherwise would be very difficult to
support.
As always, my door is open should you have questions or concerns. Have a great November!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lisa Edwards
Principal
SCHOOL SPIRIT DAYS… Uplands T-Shirt Friday
School Spirit Days are every Friday at Uplands. Wear your school clothes or
black or red to show your school spirit. Samples of school clothes and order
forms are located in the general office. You may view anytime between 8:00 am
and 3:30 pm.
SAFE ARRIVAL
Please contact our office at 250-770-7678 to advise if you child is going to be away or late for
school for any reason. Please feel free to leave a message on our answering machine before
or after school hours. Mrs. Kerr’s office hours have changed and therefore she will
not always be in the office to answer.
REMEMBRANCE DAY ASSEMBLY
Uplands Remembrance Day Assembly will be on Tuesday, November 10th
starting with classes going to the gym at 10:45 am. We hope to have many
community members joining us for this very important recognition ceremony.
Some classes will be presenting individual tributes, the Uplands Choir will sing
one selection and we will all be singing a school-wide song together.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
Mrs. Salting would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents and students who
helped make our Book Fair such a success. Over the course of the three day fair we
made $4,070.70. Wow, that is the most ever! We get 60% of our total in books! We
have either taken from the book fair or ordered $2442.42 worth of books for our library!
Thank you so much to every one for supporting our fundraiser. I’m sure our students will
enjoy these books for a long time to come!
WEATHER
This time of year brings unpredictable weather. We believe strongly in having students
outside at recess and lunch play-time in order to give their minds and bodies a break
and filling them with plenty of fresh air. Please help us by providing appropriate
outerwear including jackets and footwear. If you child tends to play active games and
might not avoid puddles sending a change of clothes would be a good idea! Teachers
will be reviewing reminders with their students.
SCHOOL ACTIVITY FEES
The school activity fee, including planner is $10.00 per student. Cash or cheques
payable to “Uplands Elementary School” should be sent directly to the school
office. Thank you to all the families who have paid their fees. We ask any
families with outstanding fees to please have those paid by November 20. Thank
you.
PENTICTON’S RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS DAY
Random Act of Kindness Day! What a great idea and why not join in on something that is expected every
day. Penticton Community Foundation has encouraged schools and communities to make a focus on
kindness to others on Friday, November 6th. It really does not take any extra effort to do something kind for
someone else without expecting anything in return. Thank you for your kindness every day and being
thoughtful to others on Friday, November 6th.
ALLERGIES and HALLOWEEN
Halloween is a difficult time for children with allergies as there is an
abundance of treats which would not normally be around. We are
proud of the progress we have made to encourage families to make
good food choices and don’t want to take away from this initiative just
because it’s Halloween. Our brains need good fuel all year long!
At this time of year we ask that you please:
 refrain from sending products that contain or may contain peanuts
and/or tree nuts.
 encourage your children to continue to bring healthy snacks to school
 limit the number of treats your child brings to one or two for a couple of
days and then eat the rest at home

SANTA’S WORKSHOP
It's that time of year again! Santa's Workshop is not far away. This year it
will be held on the morning of Friday, December 11 th. Each year our students
have the opportunity to go shopping for Christmas gifts for their family
members (mom, dad and siblings) in our gym. The kids love this event, and take
great efforts in selecting the presents for their loved ones. Most items are
$.50 ranging up to $5.00. Proceeds from this event will go towards Families in
Need in our community. If you have any new or gently used items you would like
to donate please bring it to the school office between 8:30-2:30 before Tuesday, Dec 8th. We ask
that the items sent to the school are clean and in working/playing order. We are looking for items such
as toys, games, DVD's, jewelry, puzzles, sporting goods, tools, ties, trinkets, kitchen gadgets, mom
stuff, dad stuff, etc.
We will need between 15-20 volunteers for the morning workshop Dec 11 th and 10-15 for the afternoon
set up on Thursday, Dec 10th. A sign-up sheet is located on our bulletin board across from the office or
you can also email ALICIA MOURA at amoura@summer.com to volunteer, or if you have any questions.
New Toy Drive – new location, same goal!
As many of you may have heard, the annual Toy Drive held every year at the Lakeside is not happening. In
lieu, a group of community-minded volunteers, under the leadership of Diana Stirling (Uplands parent and
owner of LocoLanding), have come together to make sure the event continues. On Thursday, November 26
from 6:00 – 9:00am everyone is invited to a warm breakfast at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre.
With the generous support of local sponsors we can continue to provide gifts for 1500 community children,
through 15 local charitable organizations, to fill a need in our community at this
special time of year. The Uplands Choir, under the direction of Ms. Judy Street, will
continue to provide entertainment from 7:15 – 8:30am. There will also be free photos
with Santa!
Please consider attending this event, donating a toy and supporting the efforts of
locals in our community to keep this “Toy Drive” alive. No child should have to wake
up on Christmas day without a toy under the tree and no parent should have to face
that disappointment.

Playground Update
As I’m sure you know, our PAC group is working on an important initiative to raise money to construct a new
playground structure, unlike any other in Penticton, specifically designed for the intermediate level students, grade 3-5.
Uplands Elementary School grounds also provides the only play area to the entire Uplands/Redlands area and will be
enjoyed not only by our students, but by the entire community, so please reach out to community members who may
benefit from this project as well! Thus far we have raised enough money to purchase the equipment and are now hoping
to start installation as soon as possible. In order to do so we need to raise $15,000 by December 2015. Please support us
by attending and/or sponsoring our Uplands Comedy Night, continuing to seek community sponsorship and watching
for information being sent home regarding help needed for various events.
A HUGE Thank You to our Bronze sponsors:
 VBS Excavating
 Grizzly Excavating Ltd.
 MacIntosh Family
 Burnco
