POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Technical Resource Specialist Non-Exempt CATEGORY: GRADE: Classified Staff D (Technology Support) JOB SUMMARY: Position is responsible for optimizing PC and related equipment, availability and reliability within Student Services by serving as centralized resource for equipment inventory control, intermediated level hardware/software maintenance and coordinator for MSU hardware, software and data line support. Also helps increase operator proficiency by improving knowledge and understanding of assigned equipment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Provide intermediate level software support for Student Services offices; to include software installation, set-up, upgrade, modification and trouble-shooting; provide intermediate level hardware support for numerous terminals and PC’s and associated peripheral equipment, to include set-up/installation of new equipment, advanced preventive maintenance, peripheral connectivity and trouble-shooting. YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 40% 2. Serve as a technical resource within Student Services to optimize the availability and reliability of information management equipment and software. 25% 3. Perform support functions for local area networks within Student Services to include network hardware devices, software installation/configuration, database/application, design and system security. 10% 4. Assist in designing, creating and maintaining student information systems databases, tracking information management equipment inventory, maintenance history, security inspection and hard drive descriptions for Student Services offices. 5% 5. Provide guidance on current and future hardware and software need of all Student Services offices; advise supervisor of procurement requirements and initiates purchase request upon receipt of guidance. 5% 6. Train information system operators on proper operation and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment which includes power protection, exterior cleaning, data security and back-up and use of personal injury protection devices. 5% 7. Serve as focal point for all printer and data line support requests within Student Services; receive supported offices’ requirements, analyze impact on existing operations, prepare support requests for MIS and 5% Effective 9/1/2000 Page 1 of 2 monitor status of action until completion. 8. Forward work order requests to MSU for hardware and software problems which cannot be resolved at the intermediate support level and monitor for timely completion. 5% REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Registrar ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Associate’s degree EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of and ability to access software applications and report generators, including the internet, word processing and database management; ability to troubleshoot, install, and maintain software/hardware; ability to train on proper operation and maintenance of assigned equipment; strong written and oral communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills. 2. Equipment Used: Personal computer and a variety of equipment associated with a general office environment. 3. Software Used: A variety of word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and presentation software in addition to PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require little physical effort in work with light (up to 10lbs), easy to handle materials. Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, and/or repetitive motion.
