There were two individuals, Ryan and Cole, running for President. I am sure we can all remember speeches of candidates running for office when we were in high school and phrases like “more assemblies” or “longer lunches,” etc. that now make us chuckle. These speeches, however, were very different from what I have heard in the past. Ryan chose not to stand behind the podium, but instead took the microphone and went toward the crowd. His message was one of rallying his classmates to join him around creating a culture of kindness and leaving a legacy for others to follow. He asked the audience if they were at The Kettle having breakfast 20 years from now, what would their reflective conversation be about attending Enumclaw High School? Would it be meaningful? Would they feel like the year 2011 – 2012 was the beginning of something great … a legacy? Enumclaw High School took 19 students with 2 steers, 6 lambs, and 17 hogs to the Spring Fair. All of the students won blue ribbons and some brought home rosettes and trophies! Cody Hebrank won Novice Grand Champion Showman for Swine. John Lanting won Novice Reserve Grand Champion Showman for Swine. Rebecca Blake won Novice Grand Champion Showman for Lambs. There were several class champions as well. Samantha Lanting won a special Walt Bergman Inspirational Award for excellence in academics and involvement in the chapter year round! This year was the first year Enumclaw has had lambs in quite some time. Five students entered lambs and dominated in showmanship! EHS also took home Best of Division awards for Ag Mechanics work (Brooke Richardson and Russell Horton’s swing bench) and Educational Displays (Samantha Lanting’s tri-fold display on Dairy Nutrition) and our Ag Issues team won best out of five teams (Holly Norton, Russell Horton, Trevor Wilson, Rachel Davis, Amanda Cooper, Sam Haney, and Brooke Richardson). Congratulations to the Enumclaw High School FFA Team and their teachers, Amy Morrison and Mark Berryhill! Great job … Cole said, “I love you” to the gym full of students. He chose not to speak for a few seconds and there was a slight murmur in the audience. He then explained, this was not the kind of love where he would want to kiss each one of them or hold their hand, but it was the kind of love that demonstrated how much he cared for them and how he wanted their high school experience to be a positive and meaningful one. If elected, he would work toward that end. Both candidates had a strong and confident presence. Both candidates knew their audience and had an uncanny ability to know when to stop and pause to add more emphasis to their message. Both candidates cared deeply about their school and their classmates. I believe you and I have a common desire in wanting our school district to be one of strong academics and rigor. I believe we also want our school district to be one of strong values and character. I believe we want a culture of kindness and compassion .... helping to lead each other to greater success than we can see in ourselves. We have the opportunity and ability to nudge and support each other and our 4200+ students to this greater success by our words and actions. It was obvious that our students, Ryan and Cole, have this desire, too. This year, 2010-2011, a group of 60+ people jumped aboard a plane and explored the land that is NEW YORK! The group is Enumclaw’s own High School Concert Choir. These ecstatic students got a once in a lifetime opportunity to see monumental parts of history and perform in various world renown venues. At 2 o’clock in the morning, these students set off on their journey and arrived at JFK in New York around noon. The choir had only minutes to check in and get settled into the “The Manhattan”, which was where the choir stayed, and the activities began! In the course of 5 days, Enumclaw Concert Choir toured all of New York. From experiencing the backstage of Radio City, to learning the history of Carnegie Hall, the choir entered the stage door to the big apple! The choir was fortunate enough to see shows all down the street of Broadway! Shows such as Lion King the Musical, Cappriccio (a German Opera), and Billy Elliott the Musical! Also, the choir rented a studio in downtown New York, and a Broadway performer from “the Addams Family; the Musical”, taught the opening number to the choir! Enumclaw High School Concert Choir performed in such places as St. Bartholomew Cathedral, Carnegie Hall, and the Statue of Liberty! The choir was able to see some very famous places in New York. Places such as Strawberry Fields in Central Park, Times Square, touring Ground Zero, Wall Street and F.A.O Schwartz. The High School Concert Choir had an amazing and unforgettable time in the grand city of New York. We worked hard to afford the trip and in the end, it was well worth it! Thank you everyone who supported us in this trip of a life time! 2011 Retirement Tea On behalf of the Enumclaw Area Chamber of Commerce, the Enumclaw Education Association, the Enumclaw Chapter of Public School Employees, and the Enumclaw School District, we would like to invite you to our “Staff Retirement and Recognition of Service to Enumclaw School District Reception” to be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 from 3:45 – 5:00 p.m. at the high school library.
