How lovely that everyone, great and small, can make their contribution toward introducing justice straightaway… And you can always, always give something, even if it is only kindness! Anne Frank, The Diary (12 June 1942 - 1 August 1944) Full-Day Kindergarten Dinner and Auction I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go. Rachel Scott, My Ethics, My Codes of Life Saturday, April 16 5:00 - 8:30 p.m. Last Tuesday, several staff members, a couple of students, and I had the privilege of listening to Darrell Scott, father of Rachel Scott speak at King 5 News Station. Rachel was the first person shot and killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Her story is powerful and her legacy continues as a result of her family and a program they started in her honor called “Rachel’s Challenge.” I encourage you to check out their website: http://www.rachelschallenge.org/ You read a quote from an essay Rachel wrote for her 5th period class above. She wrote this essay just weeks before the Columbine tragedy. The Scott family found Rachel’s diary in which she shared how she put this theory into action in her life. They also found an outline of her hands traced on the back of one of her dressers. In the middle, she states, “These hands belong to Rachel Joy Scott and will some day touch millions of people’s hearts.” “Rachel’s Challenge” is a program that focuses on proactive strategies to create a culture of kindness and compassion. An example of a strategy is the establishment of a group of students who directly connect with and support new students (have lunch with, take a tour of school and connect with friends). Of course, adults help facilitate, but it is the students who lead and implement the program. From my perspective, this is a key element in the success of the program. Enumclaw Expo Center Feild House $35.00 per person Enjoy a fantastic dinner and support a great cause! For more info or tickets contact: FullDayK@gmail.com or visit www.enumclawschoolsfoundation In this presentation, Mr. Scott draws parallels between the diaries of Rachel with those of Anne Frank. In fact, Rachel’s story received the attention of Miep Gies who is the person who saved Anne’s diary and other papers. She gave Anne’s diary to her father, Otto Frank. The Scotts met Gies just before her death. I am currently reading Chain Reaction: A Call to Compassionate Revolution by Darrell Scott. I will keep you updated on how last Tuesday’s experience will be integrated in our schools.
