I hope that you and your family had a wonderful holiday season! Our staff feels so very grateful to have students back in their classrooms! 2011 is going to be a great year of learning! I had a couple of experiences that happened to me over break that caused me to reflect upon our students and schools. I believe I told you last summer that I read “Born to Run.” It’s a fascinating book (OK… maybe only fascinating to runners) that tells a story about distance running across cultures. One theory in the book talks about how the fancy running shoes actually cause more injury than running without shoes….thus the craze for these new “shoes.” Our son, Hans made sure that I received a pair for Christmas! For a picture of these “beautiful” shoes, go to the following link: http://www.rei.com/product/805275 I share this as a foundation of my experiences as I am considering running a full marathon in the next year. Last spring, I ran my first half-marathon. For me, it’s a bucket list thing to do. I am hesitant to fully commit as I don’t really know if I can do this. My family, however, fully believes I can complete this goal....so in addition to the shoes… From Anna I received a shirt and hat From Britt I received a small nano i-pod that can attach to my hat or arm to play while running From my in-laws, I received a subscription to Runner’s World and a book on how to run a marathon. I started to read the book my in-laws gave to me (Marathoning for Mortals) and discovered the following quote: “You already have everything you need to be a long-distance athlete. You see, once you decide to run or walk farther than the 10-K (6.2 miles), your quest centers much more on tenacity than talent. Even the very best athletes at the 20-K, half-marathon, or full-marathon distance will tell you that the mind-set--not the miles--separates those who finish long-distance events from those who only dream of finishing.” I have a new sense of confidence surrounding my ability to complete a marathon. I have a family who is willing to support this bucket list item. I also have begun to shift my mental thinking about whether I see myself running and completing a marathon. This made me reflect upon our students and school system. How can our entire community positively embrace and support our students in order to achieve? How can we help all of our students see themselves as successful learners in our school district? How do we help our students to see and dream of possibilities beyond high school? I hope the next time you see one of our amazing students in town, at church, at a game or concert that you might take the time to share what impresses you about them and how they should see themselves as a successful learner. Ask them about what they see themselves doing after high school. I would be so grateful to you for taking this interest in them!! Contact Us • Mike The Alumni Luncheon was held on December 21st with approximately 30 people in attendance. The audience enjoyed an articulate group of graduates from the Class of 2010 who did a beautiful job of answering questions from parents and students. The graduates shared from their experiences preparing for posthigh school plans, as well as how they are transitioning to college life. Our thanks to Enumclaw Schools Foundation for providing pizza and to Medowsweet Dairy for donating ice cream! Considering a Scholarship? NOW IS THE TIME! Juniors and senior scholarships lists are available in the Counseling Center or on-line by visiting the EHS Career & Counseling Center SWIFT page (http://swift.enumclaw. wednet.edu/ehs/ccenter/index.php). The Governor released her “Book One” budget in December that will impact us for the 2011-2012 school year. In this budget, you will see major reductions in K-12 education. Below is an estimation of what the reductions would mean in the Enumclaw School District. K-4 Enhancement Eliminated: $400,318 Local Effort Assistance Reduced: $260,977 Highly Capable Program Eliminated: $39,000 No Stipend for National Board Teachers: $175,000 No Pay Increases based upon Experience or Education No Cost of Living Increases for Staff No Return of I-728 Funds Change in School Bus Depreciation Calculation (resulting in less money coming to our district to replace Busses) Our school district has begun to review the impact state reductions would have on our local budget for 2011-2012. Like last year, the following bullets are filters for our decision-making: • Student learning • Staff learning • Support services • Safe learning and working environment The Enumclaw School District is not alone as any state budget decisions in K-12 education involve all 295 school districts in our state. As a school district, we will respond proactively and positively to what we know and understand regarding these transitions and budget shortfalls. As parents and community members, we encourage you to ask questions when you don’t understand these changes or if you want to seek accurate information. The Enumclaw School District will do the very best job possible to communicate, seek input during this time period and be transparent in decision-making. Fourth Annual State of Enumclaw School District Address January 27, 2011 at 7:00 pm Enumclaw High School Auditorium Please join Superintendent Mike Nelson as he delivers his fourth annual State of Enumclaw School District Address. Following the time in the auditorium, cookies and coffee will be served in the Enumclaw High School Library. Mark January 27th at 7:00 PM on your calendar! It will be an enjoyable evening celebrating the work in our public schools! Sunrise Holiday Family Reading Night In response to an important learning goal established by our school district Board of Directors, staff members and administrators remain intently focused on the continued improvement of our mathematics program! The work to improve our students’ learning in mathematics is occurring in a broad-based manner that includes all necessary elements for success - curriculum, instruction, assessment, student support, and communication. Our teachers, students, parents and community members continue to express strong support for our recently-adopted new math textbooks - Math Expressions (elementary), and Holt (middle/high school). These textbook programs provide a rigorous mathematics experience for our students that is grounded in number fluency and algebra concepts. In addition, teachers are working hard to implement curriculum and pacing guides at each grade level that ensure teaching and learning consistency from classroom-to classroom. Much of our teachers’ instructional improvement occurs on Early Dismissal Fridays. During this time, all teachers meet with their grade level or department teams to carefully analyze the learning performance of their students. Our teachers are then able to adapt their instructional strategies and determine whether each student is performing successfully, needs extra support or needs further challenge in the classroom. Another vital improvement initiative in our mathematics program this school year is the implementation of monthly Math Standards Monitoring Assessments in elementary, middle school and high school classrooms. These rigorous monthly math tests are given to all students and designed to measure their progress before it’s too late - in learning key math skills/knowledge that will be tested on the state-required MSP or EOC. We are also working to better communicate to parents the learning progress of their child through a more aligned, cleaner elementary report card that will be implemented during Winter Trimester. The mathematics section of this new report card will align with our monthly Math Standards Monitoring Assessments so parents can better recognize their child’s progress on the most important math skills of that grade level. In addition, this new report will be posted on our school district Family Access website! We are confident these promising initiatives will improve our program and enable our students to perform at higher levels in mathematics! Approximately 180 people attended this popular event in a magical environment created in the school’s multipurpose room. Families browsed the school’s bookfair and gathered for an evening of snuggling together with good books, guest readers, and the everpopular annual performances by the Enumclaw High School Drama Department. Everyone was treated to cookies and milk and each child left the evening with a brand new, “justright” book, generously provided by the Sunrise Eagles PTA. What a wonderful celebration of Reading in the Sunrise school community! Focus on Mathematics
