Wouldn’t it be incredible if our whole staff and community made a commitment to making our
reading life public with the children in our school district as a way to building a school system and
community of readers?

New Board Student Representatives
I am so grateful to all students, parents and community members! Our
school system had a most incredible opening. I have had the opportunity
to be in each building multiple times in the last couple of weeks and find
it quite remarkable how quickly our students and staff have established
classroom norms and values and moved into a solid learning cycle….simply
amazing!
Traveling around to our buildings, I found a great deal of evidence that
indicates knowledge of and purposeful work toward meeting our three
district goals for the 2010 – 2011 school year: Professional Learning Communities, Mathematics
and Literacy. You can see expanded goal statements below. For a full version, check out our website:
http://www.enumclaw.wednet.edu/board/goals/district_action_plan10_11.pdf
Two goals (PLC and Mathematics) are goals that are continuing from last year. The third goal of
Literacy is an additional one this year. For the past dozen years, our system has been known in
the area for our work in literacy - from bookrooms to who we have brought into our system for
literacy professional development. Our high school scores on state assessments continue to be well
above state averages and among the very best in our area. We have focused a great deal of time on
mathematics and science in the last few years and we felt it was critical to come back to Literacy as a
goal for the purpose of reigniting a passion for reading across our system and community.
Shelley Harwayne, former Superintendent in District 2 in New York City, stated in her visit to
Enumclaw that one of the best ways to ignite a passion in our students to be lifelong readers and
writers is to share our own stories around our reading life. Currently, each teacher at Westwood
Elementary has their reading life posted outside their classroom door, clearly visible for all to read.
I’m sure they share this on a regular basis with their students. (I also know several individuals around
the district are doing this!) Often, I am motivated to read a book because of a recommendation of a
family member or friend. Below is a simple example of this chart using my current reading life.

Last February, the board implemented Policy 1200 which approved the
addition of two student representatives to the board of directors. The
role of the representatives is to provide student insight and perspective
to the board; serve as liaisons to the high school students; and report to
the students about the work of the district and the board of directors.
After an interview process in May, 11th grade student Lauren Cary and
Will
12th grade student Will Holland were chosen as the first representatives
to the board. In his application, Will stated that his desire was to expand
his horizons and become more involved in serving his community.
Will has been in Leadership Class at EHS for the past two years and
is excited to expand that role from high school to district level. He
looks forward to serving his peers by increasing communication paths
between the board and students. Also involved with EHS Leadership,
Lauren
Lauren is busy with academics and extra-curricular activities. Lauren
states that she is an avid listener who is not afraid to make her opinions known for the
welfare of the student body. We welcome Lauren and Will and look forward to their
contributions through the 2010 – 11 school year!
Pre-Open House FFA BBQ
A Pre-Open House BBQ was held for all of the
students and families enrolled in the Agriculture
Education Department at EHS. The BBQ was
free to all and was a huge success! Families were
introduced to our new teachers, Jesse Taylor and
Amy Morrison, and had the chance to hear from
Holly Norton and Holly Frazier, both active
FFA members, about the opportunities in the
program for students. Jesse and Amy also shared
what has been happening so far this year in their program and upcoming events in the
FFA. In just three short weeks they have undertaken several projects including a truck
and tractor restoration, holiday wreath sale, floral arrangement subscription service,
rose sales at The Hive store, and The Puyallup Fair. Jesse and Amy are also the District
2 FFA advisors and are planning and hosting the annual Blue and Gold Leadership
Tour next week, and Camp Cispus Retreat in October. Our first all chapter meeting
will be held the evening of Wednesday, September 29th.

CHAD DAVIDSON
How did my 1st week back as the
new Titan Dean of Students go? This
is a great question, and one that I’m
excited to say went well. The fear of the
unknown, going from the class room to
the administration office, was the main
beast that I was truly fearful of. I kept
asking myself, and my wife, way too
many times bless her soul, how am I going to do stepping out into
this new role. Once your students arrived, any and all fear washed
away. I am thankful that the district and our principal, Mrs.
Callison, have done a wonderful job of helping me acclimate to
my new role. As well, my joy of working with kids in an academic
setting quickly put my fear at ease.
Choosing from the array of dean highlights these past 2 weeks
presented a tough dilemma. We had many great moments here in
Titanville. Looking at these highlights through the lens of a few of
the responsibility hats I wear makes choosing easier, so here are
two snapshots that come to mind:
• Starting with my administration of student discipline. I’d
have to say that pulling students down by grade level to have a
guidelines and expectations for conduct and behavior assembly
helped. This gave me the opportunity to introduce myself and let
the students know that I’ve set the behavioral bar high for them.
• Monitoring attendance is another hat that Mrs. Lilly, our
attendance secretary, and I work closely with. Mrs. Lilly and I
decided to call down the most frequently absent students coming
in from 5th grade, as well as from the building last year, so they
could understand that absenteeism is something we should work to
eliminate, and that I’ll be checking in from time to time with them
to make sure all is well. It was fascinating to hear from each child
and get insight into each student as an individual.
DOUG BURNHAM
It has been a wonderful start to the
school year here at Enumclaw Middle
School. In my first week as Dean, I
quickly realized that I was in a special
place where student learning is of the
utmost importance. I have been very
impressed with the district as a whole,
but especially with the teachers and
support personnel here at Enumclaw Middle School. I have found
them to be a very hard working group of individuals concentrated
on every student’s potential and success. I spent a lot of time
in classrooms the first week and was very impressed with the
demonstrated shared focus of our teachers. I am excited to be
a part of the district and look forward helping make Enumclaw
Middle School be the best it can be.
Memorial Garden
Every year, our ASB student council chooses a service project that
would benefit the students and staff of Kibler Elementary. Our 20092010 ASB student council
chose to build a Memorial
Garden to honor our students
who have passed away since
Kibler became a K-5 school
in 2005. Students worked
to earn money by running a
school store giving up their
lunch recesses every Friday
throughout the year. The money earned was donated to the garden fund.
Kibler families and staff also made donations to this fund. Principal
Julene Miller was a great advocate for the students making this choice.
All Kibler staff members and the district maintenance staff were
supportive and helpful.
Kibler families, students, and staff came together multiple times
June through September to design, build, arrange, and plant. On our
big day of service on
August 7th, over 50
people attended our
work party. The garden
is now complete and
we would like to invite
community members to
walk through and honor
those children who
were taken too soon. Thank you to all families and businesses that have
donated benches, money, time, and talent to making our beautiful Kibler
Memorial Garden.
