SCHOOL DISTRICT April 2010 CONNECTION Serving Enumclaw and Black Diamond 2929 McDougall Avenue, Enumclaw • 360-802-7100 • Fax 360-802-7140 Superintendent Message Dear Families, Last year, our school district went through a selection process to find new K-12 math instructional materials. This process involved many staff and community members coming together for meetings with textbook representatives attempting to find the best mathematics materials for the students of the Enumclaw School District. Last May, the Board of Directors officially adopted these new materials and when our students came back in September, they were greeted with these new books, manipulatives and software enhancements (depending upon the grade level). This school year, improving math student achievement has been one of two district goals. We developed three S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-Oriented, TimeBound) goals. The three goals focused on: • Number Sense and Operations (Knowing basic math facts with fluency) • Curriculum-Based Assessments (Consistent, Systemwide assessments using our new math materials) • Progress Monitoring Assessment (Using an essential state math standard and assessing student progress of that standard over time) Our staff members have used their Professional Learning Community time on Friday afternoon to work toward achieving these goals. In a past note to you, I have shared this information in a linear way as four questions: Question #1: What is it we want our students to learn? Question #2: How will we know if our students have learned it? Question #3: How will we respond if our students don’t learn? Question #4: How will we enrich or extend the learning for students who have learned it? A different way to look at these four questions would be to think of them as a continuous learning cycle. This student work review cycle starts with a clear identification of the learning standard (Question #1) or target, moving from there to the development and giving of an assessment that measures student performance on meeting a certain level of proficiency on the identified standard (Question #2). After an assessment is given, teachers review student data (Question #2) identifying students in need of interventions (Questions #3 and #4). Re-assessing (back to Question #2) the students is also a critical component of the student work review cycle to evaluate whether the intervention was successful. I hope this gives you good information about the precise work we are doing in our school system as we strive to improve our student performance results in mathematics. The Enumclaw High School Science Adoption Committee has been engaged since last January in a process that will result in new high school science curriculum being implemented during 2010-11! The responsibilities of this Science Adoption Committee were to review the most recent state and national studies, carefully examine top-rated science programs, and then select the textbooks and instructional materials that best meet our students’ learning needs. The science programs ultimately selected must be approved by the Board of Directors, and then will be implemented next school year at Enumclaw High School. The Science Adoption Committee recommended to the Enumclaw School Board at their meeting on April 20, the following science textbooks be adopted for implementation in high school science courses in September, 2010: Course Text Title Physical Science Physical, Earth and Space Science: An Integrated Approach Biology Holt Biology A.P. Childhood obesity is growing at an unprecedented level, creating health issues in children that are typically seen in older adults, specifically in the areas of heart disease and diabetes. Nationwide, schools have taken steps in the past few years to improve the quality of nutrition in the meals that schools serve. In the Enumclaw School District, we serve only whole grain breads to the elementary and middle school students. While students at the high school have a choice of breads for deli sandwiches, all of our buns, pasta and rice are whole grain. We have unlimited salad bars at every school serving fresh fruits and vegetables such as kiwi, melons, broccoli, carrots and more. We are also introducing students to new fruits. While our commodities meats (those provided by the government) are processed meats, we also serve meats (chicken, beef and turkey) that are not processed. Our Food Services department is working on lowering the fat, sodium and sugar levels to follow the Nutrition Standards set by the Institute of Medicine guidelines We continue to work hard to improve the health of our lunches as a step in reducing childhood obesity. Working with students provides some great challenges, in that the meals need to be both appealing to students while also being healthy, tasty and nutritious. If you have questions or comments about our Food Services program, please contact Tracy Holyan, Food Services Supervisor, at 360-802-7714.
