I thought I would share with you some of our important work and key projects, particularly as it pertains to our district goals. Math While we are working on other curricular areas simultaneously, the area of improving student achievement in math for all of our students is our top instructional goal. Here are a few key projects: • Process started for new K-12 math instructional materials • District-wide K-8 math assessments written and will be implemented with students twice during this school year. • Implementing the new state math standard as recently released by the state of Washington. Facilities/Technology The Board of Directors made a decision last fall, after 18 months of study and research to run a Capital Facilities and Instructional Technology Levy on February 3. For complete information about the levy and the 18 months of meeting and community involvement, please go to our website www.enumclaw.wednet.edu Community Relations For the past two years, we have implemented several new communication strategies and tools. Without a doubt, these two changes in leadership will alter how public schools systems do business. Both President-Elect Obama and Superintendent-Elect Dorn have indicated changes in federal education laws and state education procedures (particularly in student assessment) that could mean modifying what our school district is currently doing. In addition, on December 18th, Governor Gregoire released her budget proposal. Our state is facing an ever-increasing budget shortfall. Governor Gregoire presented a budget with many cuts, including significant decreases in funding to K-12 education. This budget release is the first in a long budget process that will occur during the next several months. The state Senate and House of Representatives will be sharing their budgets in the coming weeks and months. Two big items currently in the governor's cuts that will greatly impact our system come from proposed reductions of I-728 funding and Levy equalization. Our school district has begun to review what these significant reductions will mean to our budget for 2009-2010 and are using the following bullets as filters for our decision-making: • Student learning • Staff learning • Support services • Safe learning and working environment The Enumclaw School District is not alone as these transitions involve all 295 school districts in our state. As a school district, we will respond proactively and positively to what we know and understand regarding these transitions and budget shortfalls. As parents and community members, we encourage you to ask questions when you don't understand these changes or if you want to seek accuracy. The Enumclaw School District will do the very best job possible to communicate, seek input during this time period and be transparent in decision-making. Considering a Scholarship? NOW IS THE TIME! Juniors and Seniors scholarships lists are available in the Career Center or on-line by visiting the High School website (enumclaw.wednet.edu), going to School Info and then clicking on Career Center or going to the Career Center Swift page. These lists are usually updated twice a month. The lists give out websites to sign up for free scholarship searches, testing, practice tests and much more. Seniors should be almost done applying to colleges. They should be filling out their FAFSA and working on scholarships applications. Please check college websites for their special scholarships available to incoming freshmen. Jr. Achievement Applications are in the Career Center for Juniors with a 3.2 gpa or better, involved in community service and school activities. Juniors planning on attending a 4-year college should sign up to take the SAT and/or ACT this spring.
