SCHOOL DISTRICT November 2008 CONNECTION Serving Enumclaw and Black Diamond 2929 McDougall Avenue, Enumclaw • 360-802-7100 Superintendent Message SCHOOL CONFERENCES: Forging a Home/School Partnership Happy November to each of you! I don’t know about you, but just hearing and writing the word “November” begins to shift my thinking....dark evenings, leaves blowing, holidays....and report cards and conferences! As a former student in the Enumclaw School District, I always looked forward to the moment when my parents arrived home after my parent conferences. I couldn’t wait to hear what my teacher had to say about my work. ? In the 1970’s, conferences only occurred while we were in elementary school. Now, we have K-12 conferences. This year our conferences begin on November 20th. I am looking forward to having each of our school buildings filled with parents and teachers partnering together about how to support and meet the social and academic needs of our students. I am so appreciative of this time to forge a partnership between school and home. I hope that your conference time with our staff is a productive one! In Partnership with YOU! Mike Questions to ask at parent-teacher conferences 1. How is my child doing academically? Socially? Do you believe my child is working up to his/her ability? 2. What might I do at home to reinforce the skills that you’re working on in the classroom? 3. How much time should my child be spending on his homework? Tell me what I should expect regarding homework assignments? Westwood Launches Positive Behavioral Supports! This year Westwood has begun implementation of a program called “Positive Behavior Support” (PBS). This is a well researched approach to school wide discipline and includes proactive strategies for teaching and supporting appropriate student behavior to create a positive school environment. Full implementation of the program takes three years and includes supports for school, classroom and individual students. It is based on the following principles: • Create a safe and welcoming school community for everyone – students, parents and all staff • Adopt universal school rules: • Be Respectful! • Be Responsible! • Be Safe! • Regularly teach, model and practice the school-wide expectations • Notice and acknowledge students who demonstrate positive behaviors • Proactively supervise all common areas • Indentify and address behavior concerns: school-wide, group and individual • Understand and utilize a variety of consequences which are routinely evaluated for effectiveness • Proactively correct misbehaviors This fall, teachers present the “School Wide Behavior of the Week” each Monday. Students learn about our universal school rules and how they apply in different areas of our school. It has really made a difference for all of our students to receive the same lesson every Monday. Our next steps include a re-vamped referral process, staff training in: responding to misbehavior, understanding environmental factors and acknowledging appropriate behavior. Materials for our program and the research that supports it can be found on the following websites: www.modelprogram.com and www.pbis.org We are looking forward to supporting all of our students in learning appropriate student behaviors to support a positive learning environment at Westwood! 147397 Contact Us Enumclaw School District 2929 McDougall Avenue Enumclaw WA 98022 360.802.7100 Marci Shepard, Dean of Students marci_shepard@enumclaw.wednet.edu 360.802.7492 Fax: 360.802.7500 Enumclaw High School (Grades 9-12) 226 Semanski Street South Enumclaw WA 98022 Jill Burnes, Principal jill_burnes@enumclaw.wednet.edu Ed Hatzenbeler, Assistant Principal ed_hatzenbeler@enumclaw.wednet.edu Paul Iacobazzi, Assistant Principal paul_iacobazzi@enumclaw.wednet.edu Kevin Smith, Assistant Principal & CTE Director kevin_smith@enumclaw.wednet.edu Tim Tubbs, Athletic Director tim_tubbs@enumclaw.wednet.edu 360.802.7669 Fax: 360.802.7676 Black Diamond Elementary (Grades K-5) 25314 Baker Street Black Diamond WA 98010 Gerrie Garton, Principal gerrie_garton@enumclaw.wednet.edu 360.802.7570 Fax: 360.802.7610 Enumclaw Middle School (Grades 6-8) 550 Semanski Street South Enumclaw WA 98022 Steve Rabb, Principal steve_rabb@enumclaw.wednet.edu Brian Patrick, Dean of Students brian_patrick@enumclaw.wednet.edu 360.802.7150 Fax: 360.802.7224 Southwood Elementary (Grades K-5) 3240 McDougall Avenue Enumclaw WA 98022 Susan Arbury, Principal susan_arbury@enumclaw.wednet.edu 360.802.7370 Fax: 802.7374 Thunder Mt. In a letter from State Superintendent Terry Bergeson wrote, “Because of the tremendous gains your students have made in their mathematics and reading skills over the past several years, your school has earned the State Superintendent’s Learning Improvement Award and will be recognized as a 2008 “School of Distinction.” This award celebrates the top five percent of elementary, middle, high and alternative schools that exceeded this year’s state average performance on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning in reading and mathematics, as well as demonstrated outstanding improvement over time in both of those subjects. Your school is among just 100 statewide that will receive this recognition in 2008.” Enumclaw Superintendent Mike Nelson states, “We are so proud of Southwood Principal Susan Arbury and the entire Southwood staff and community. They work tirelessly each day to help each and every one of their students be successful! Southwood Elementary and the Enumclaw School District as a whole is a great place for students and staff!” Please celebrate with us as our leaders are honored! Mike Nelson, our superintendent, was honored on November 7, 2008 at the WSASCD (Washington State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) Conference with an award called ‘Educating the Whole Child’. This award is given to an educator in the State of Washington that demonstrates exceptional leadership in programs that meet the needs of the whole child. Mike Nelson (left) and Chris Beals (right) pose during their awards ceremony. Chris Beals, Principal at Sunrise Elementary in Enumclaw, received a state level award for Individual Leadership. The award is given to someone who influences the instructional leadership and professional growth of educators. Staff members at Sunrise Elementary spent a great deal of time preparing the nomination application without Chris’ knowledge! What a wonderful tribute to Chris and to the entire Sunrise Elementary staff for their focus on student learning and professional development! BOOK STUDY Enumclaw students, elementary through high school, enjoyed an evening with Tacoma author Margaret Barton. Her book Plymouth Poppet was the focus of the fall Community Book Club event November 13th at the EHS Library. As our fifth graders study the colonies and east coast Native Americans this month, these “hometown book club” activities connected to their curriculum: stories, food, games, and crafts of the Plymouth settlement and the Wampanoag tribe. The Muckleshoot Tribal School Performing Arts Group also provided music for the event. Enumclaw School District collects over 7200 items for the Food Drive! Superintendent Mike Nelson states, “It has been truly amazing to watch our entire system come together to help, support and provide service to our community by making such generous donations to food banks in Enumclaw and Black Diamond. Thank you. To me, this represents the definition of community, particularly the power of our entire school district coming together with a common purpose. As the largest employer in our area, we have the ability to thoughtfully lead not only in educating our students each day, but in helping and serving our community as a whole.” Testing & Screening Individual Achievement Testing Each year, our K-4 students have the opportunity to participate in the qualifying assessment for placement into the Individual Achievement (I.A.) Program. This year’s test for students in second through fourth grades will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Southwood Elementary School. The assessment for kindergarten and first grade students will be held during the school day the weeks of January 19 and January 26. Those interested in having their child assessed for the Individual Achievement Program, can sign up in the office of their child’s school beginning on December 1, 2008. The deadline for signing up kindergarten and first grade students will be January 5, 2009. The deadline for signing up second through fourth grade students will be January 23, 2009. Child Development Screening The Enumclaw School District will hold several free Child Development Screenings throughout the school year for preschool aged children who are not enrolled in public school and may have special needs. Screening results are shared with parents and, if necessary, further testing is recommended. The purpose of the screening is to identify issues that could affect a child’s success in school. Special needs can be defined as having concerns with any of the following: hearing, vision, speech, language, health, learning, behavior, birth defects, developmental delays, orthopedic problems, mental retardation, autism or other disabilities. To participate in the screening or for more information, please call the Enumclaw School District Student Support Services Office at 360.802.7125.
