SCHOOL DISTRICT September 2008 CONNECTION Serving Enumclaw and Black Diamond 2929 McDougall Avenue, Enumclaw A few weeks ago, Britt and I picked just over 20 lbs. of blueberries. When we arrived at the blueberry farm, we were walked to a particular row of bushes. Britt was instructed to go down one side of the bush and I was told to pick from the other side. Our eyes widened as we looked at the bush where we could clearly see lots of fully ripened berries. The bushes certainly didn’t look like the four scrawny ones that we have at home! :) The owner must have seen or sensed our “I Like Me” Mrs. Davis and Mrs Willard’s classrooms at Black Diamond Elementry just finished reading I Like Me by Nancy Carlson. Read below to find out what these students said they liked! “I like Monster Trucks! I like playing golf!” -Tristen, 1st Grade “I like my papa teaching me to swim! I like to dance at home!” -Caitlyn, 1st Grade “I like making breakfast with my mom! I like playing with my sister! I like fishing with my dad!” -Taelyn, 1st Grade “I like playing! I like school! I like to read! I like to play school!” -Yoselyn, 1st Grade “I like fishing! I like swimming! I like riding my bike!” -Gregory, 1st Grade “I like going to Oregon! I like going to Chelan! I like pizza!” -Cameron, 1st Grade “I like to run because it is good for you! I like going to school because I like learning! I like reading because it makes me go to sleep.” -Savanna, 1st Grade “I like Mrs. Davis! I like to walk my dog! I like learning! I like reading!” -Rebekah, 1st Grade “I like to run with myself! I like learning! I like riding my bike!” -Brian, 1st Grade • 360-802-7100 Arts Alive excitement to pick as she took a step forward toward the bush and said, “I know that you think there are a lot of berries here, but let me show you something. Gently pull back the branches like this. Take a peek. What do you see?” Britt and I were startled at what we saw. Inside we saw many more berries than were on the exterior branches. The owner said, “You must always look inside. You will be amazed at what you see.” I love being outside in my garden. It was very therapeutic to pick berries for a couple of hours on that Saturday, but I couldn’t help replaying this conversation in my head. We just welcomed 550 employees and 4100 students back into our schools. We have made The arts are alive in the Enumclaw School District elementary classrooms, thanks to a generous combination of grants from the City of Enumclaw, Washington State Arts Commission, Arts Alive!, ArtsEd Washington, and in kind contributions from Enumclaw School District and the City of Enumclaw! This summer, approximately 20 teachers from Enumclaw were given the opportunity to attend a one week intensive training in teaching visual arts, drama, and dance at the Tacoma Art Museum. Instruction in each area was by professional artists who have also been trained in the state Essential Learnings in the arts. The summer training will be followed by a "one on one" classroom mentorship with an artist, in an area chosen by each school. Arts Impact, part of the Puget Sound Educational Service District, provides this training at a cost to them a concerted effort to reach out to our parents and community during the past twelve months and will continue to do so. I wonder, though, how can we “pull back the branches” of our school system even more so to work in partnership in support of student learning? There are amazing things happening within our schools and classrooms. Whether you attend one of our sporting events, concerts, open house nights or if you simply would like a tour of one of our schools, I would love to have you see “inside” our schools. Like Britt and I experienced with the blueberry bushes, you will find wonderful surprises! It has become a national model for training teachers in the arts, and is All District Day, • www.enumclaw.wednet.edu the only program of its kind in the United States. The training is for two years, with Year One focusing on learning the disciplines of the arts, and Year Two on authentic integration of the arts into content area curriculum. Teachers participating were from Southwood Elementary, Westwood Elementary, Kibler Elementary, Sunrise Elementary, and Black Diamond Elementary. Enumclaw is one of a handful of districts that is working on a whole district arts curriculum with staff trained to teach the arts. Principals in each school are members of ArtsEd Washington, which provides support for strategic planning at the school level in implementing the arts. A new part of the Arts Impact training this year included three teachers who have four years of training from Southwood Elementary. Faith Lindley, Laura Johnson, and Jody Emerson spent the week at Tacoma Art Museum assembling an integrated art and math curriculum notebook, which will be available to all of the Enumclaw Arts Impact trained teachers. Aug. 28, 2008 Welcome back Enumclaw School District teachers and staff! A: Family Access is a web-based tool designed to enhance parent/guardian and school communication. It is a voluntary and free service provided by the district. With just a “point and click” from your home or office, you can review your child’s attendance, grades, student schedules, discipline, food service balance, and history. To sign up for Family Access, the parent or legal guardian must show photo identification at the district office. The application can be submitted online in advance at http:// www.enumclaw. wednet.edu/families/ familyaccess/ application.aspx For further information, please contact the Help Desk at 360.802.7129 Q: Did you recently update your website? A: Yes! We have recently updated the entire website! Not only is it a much cleaner look, but it’s also more user friendly. We have added headlines, schedules, and other information. In addition, we have added a district calendar which allows easy access to future school related events.
