paid advertisement December 2007 SCHOOL DISTRICT CONNECTION Serving Enumclaw And Black Diamond 2929 McDougall Avenue, Enumclaw • 360-802-7100 Superintendent Message As a school district, we have spent the last 3-6 months putting new and additional Mike Nelson, Enumclaw School safety and District Superintendent security measures in place on behalf of students and staff. We strongly feel that a key priority of our school system is to provide a safe learning environment for all students and staff. Often these types of items do not receive much press, but I feel the following systems are critical to the infrastructure of our school system. These new safety and security systems have never been in place in our system before and I am thrilled to be able to share these new systems with you. School Mapping Our schools are now electronically mapped. This is now accessible by schools and law and fire authorities. Besides electronic maps of all schools clearly identifying all entrances/exits, locations for safety stations/headquarters, road closures, etc. have also been established. This level of knowledge and preplanning has never been in place before. This information can now be used for events as well as for emergency situations. School Messenger Service We now have the ability to place phone calls to families by recording a message and selecting a “group” that we would like to receive the message. Last week EHS Principal David Dorn sent two messages to all families at EHS sharing key information and sharing that school would be on a normal schedule. Feedback from the calls was overwhelmingly positive. 911 Our 911 systems have been evaluated and locations/room number changes are being updated. Enumclaw School District Website We have found that our parents who work outside of Enumclaw appreciate the way we post messages on our website when we have any weather or emergency conditions occurring in our school district. During a recent incident at one of our schools, our website posted updated information several times in one day. Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce We have built a partnership with the Enumclaw Chamber of Commerce in which Executive Director Cathy Rigg sends a broadcast message out to their membership regarding important news of our school district. This allows our local merchants to have factual information when customers come to their stores. We are also striving to be better communicators with YOU. I hope you are seeing and feeling this change. I believe communication with our parents and public is a critical part of building a high performing school system. Last Tuesday I taped my monthly superintendent show with Enumclaw TV. On this show I discuss these new safety measures that we have put in place and additional ways we are sharing accurate information about our school system. You can view these shows on Enumclaw City TV or by going to the city of Enumclaw website and viewing it online. I would truly appreciate your help in spreading a positive and consistent message about our work with students in the Enumclaw School District. Your voices have a powerful impact in our community when you talk about our schools. We are striving to build an amazing learning place for all kids. May you all have wonderful time with your families during our winter break! Facilities Update Earlier this year the school district, with input from business and community members, selected Mahlum Architects to work on updating school district facility information. This is being done in anticipation of running a capital facilities bond sometime during 2008. The “Facilities Study and Survey” which Mahlum is updating, is a comprehensive document that includes analysis of existing facility conditions, student capacity information, as well as current and future facility needs. Butch Reifert from Mahlum, presented a draft copy of the study and survey to the board of directors at the December 17th meeting. • Fax 360-802-7123 1. : a reference book containing words usually alphabetically arranged along with information about their forms, pronunciations, functions . . . Lions Club Gene Baker from the Lions Club is pictured with Mrs. Emerson’s third and fourth graders at Southwood Elementary. For the past three years the Lions Club has presented dictionaries to all third grade students in the Enumclaw and White River School Districts. Traditionally the Lions help those individuals with sight issues. In giving these dictionaries, the Lions celebrate the good eyesight of those children who can read them and at the same time ask these children to remember those who are not as fortunate. Future third grade students in both districts can continue to look forward to the day they receive their dictionary from the Lions Club.
