Mr. Beamon made a motion to accept the Middle Grades Science Curriculum Guide with
modification of removing specialization courses at the bottom and changing total hours from 123
to 126. Dr. Copeland seconded. Dr. Woolard opposed.
Special Education B.S./M.Ed.
Dr. Bazemore asked members to review the five year Special Education B.S./M.Ed. curriculum
guide. Dr. Bazemore and her committee will move forward with planning five year program.
BK Course Deletion/Addition
Dr. Spellman proposed to delete EDUC 460-Professional Studies V: Portfolio Development from
the BK curriculum. This course helps students with portfolio development to satisfy DPI
requirements. Students will receive help with portfolio in EDUC 478 during the student teaching
process. A BKED three hour elective is needed to replace EDUC 460. Students may choose from
the following:





BKED 305
BKED 340
BKED 345
BKED 455
BKED 465
Dr. Woolard made a motion to delete EDUC 460 from the BK curriculum and replace with a
BKED three hour elective. Mrs. Key-Sutton seconded. All were in favor of accepting the
changes to BK curriculum.
Students Admitted to TEP
Dr. Shelia Williams presented 13 candidates for admission into Teacher Education. Dr. Woolard
made a motion to accept the students who have been admitted into the Teacher Education
Program since last meeting. Dr. Hill seconded. All were in favor of accepting students in Teacher
Education Program.
TEP Updates
Spring 2014 Student Teachers
Dr. Williams stated that we have 25 student teachers on the field.
edTPA
Dr. Williams attended an edTPA Training on February 18, 2014 at UNC-Charlotte. This training
focused specifically on the edTPA Elementary Combination (literacy + math). The Education
Teacher Performance Assessment is being piloted by ECU and Winston-Salem State University.
The Impact of Learning Project will be sent to Person for assessment. The cost is $300 per
student. This will help us for NCTQ. More information is forthcoming.
Dr. Williams also informed members that Winston-Salem State University education programs
are being cut and they are left with birth through kindergarten and elementary education.
Western Carolina is in the process of losing their middle grades programs.
TEP Warranty Program
The Teacher Education Warranty Program is in full effect. We currently have a middle grades
and music teacher who are taking advantage of the Warranty Program. Drs. Williams and Hill
met with the principal of the middle grades teacher and also observed teacher. Dr. Williams
suggested that we have dual advisors for middle grades.
TEP Interviews
The Teacher Education Program started to interview candidates for admission into Program in
November 2013.
Library Research
Dr. Williams informed members that we are having problems with some students plagiarizing.
She recommended that students attend a workshop on plagiarism that is being offered as one of
the Library Research Workshops for the spring semester.
New Data
Dr. Williams reminded members that Blackboard is used for students not admitted and
Taskstream for students admitted.
Dr. Bazemore and Dr. Hill are in the processing of scheduling a PRAXIS I Workshop for
students. The SAFRA grant will be used to pay for 35 students to take PRAXIS I.
As part of the SBE approved Remodeling (Revisioning), completers of an approved teacher
education program were not required to pass Praxis II testing requirements unless they were
recommended for the Elementary Education or Special Education licenses. Elementary and
Special Education completers must pass the Praxis II test(s) prior to employment to meet the
federal requirement of "highly qualified". Recent legislative changes will require all completers
to pass identified licensure exams. In October 2013, the SBE approved a policy change requiring
Praxis II for all licensure areas effective July 1, 2014.
Conceptual Framework
Dr. Copeland shared the conceptual framework changes with members.
CAEP Updates
Dr. Williams and Dr. Spellman will be attending the Spring 2014 CAEP Conference in
Nashville, TN March 26-28, 2014.
A data review team has been created and will meet monthly.
