Introduction The College of San Mateo Technology Plan 2002-2005 is an outgrowth of the comprehensive document "Technology for 21 st Century Learning" produced by the College in 1995. A Technology Planning Committee was formed in November 2002 to revise and update the previous document. This new document will be a strategic planning tool. Becausetechnology is changing at an ever-increasing pace the plan has a limited scope of two years. The intention is that this plan will be updated on a two-year cycle. For continuity, the Goals and Goal Statementsfrom "Technology for 21st Century Learning" were carried over to the new plan with updated strategies and action steps. II. TechnologyPlanning Committee Committee Charge: Advise the President by reviewing previous technology plans, recommending changes, developing goals, and discussing current and future uses of technology on campus. Members: Tim Karas (Chair), Library Faculty Diana Bennett, Multimedia Faculty Cathleen Kennedy, Computer Science Faculty Nancy Witte, Vice President of Instruction Office Greg Royce, Associated Students III. Benefits This plan will benefit the college in prioritizing needsand setting goals for technology. Each constituent part of shared governance had an active role in the planning process for this document. Each member brought perspectives and needs from their constituencies and out of this diverse dialog common goals and action stepswere developed. By proactively planning for technology the campus will be better able to disperse funds in a prudent and fiscally responsible manner. This plan is one facet of the college's overall strategic planning model and will feed into the other components of the college's strategic planningprocess. One of the recurring benefits from this plan will be the creation of a standing committee/forum, Computer Technology Advisory Committee (CTAC), charged with gathering information on the status and needs of technology on campus and providing prioritized lists for the budget process. In the future, the Technology Planning Committee will be an ad-hoc sub-group of CTAC responsible for updating the Technology Plan. Technology Guiding Principles The successful application of technology at the College of San Mateo will: .Foster student successthrough the use of technology. .Encourage and support creative and innovative uses of technology. .Require collaborative input in technology decision-making. .Support the development of college goals. .Maintain, monitor, and manage technology to meet the needs of the college community. .Support the college mission, vision and diversity statements. .Provide accessto learning opportunities and college support services through the use of technology. .Increase the use of instructional technology in the curriculum. .Ensure efficient and effective use of technology resources through planning. .Leverage network resources and services to meet current and future technology and information needs. .Provide training and support opportunities for faculty, administrators and staff. V. Goals, Strategies and Actions Steps Goall: Enhance Learning Like other aspectsof instruction, technological decisions should be evaluated according to whether they improve learning or reasonablypromise to do so. Effective, efficient use of sound pedagogiesrequires making them available to all students; adequateamounts of equipment, support staff, and facilities; faculty and staff who are knowledgeable about the use of current technology; support for new instructional design and development; and the capability to determine how particular applications of technology may improve learning. Strategy 1.1: Provide all students with oDDortunitiesto learn using technology Actions: => Communicatecurrentinfoffi1ationabouttechnologyservices,lab hoursand distancelearningcourses to all students. => Provideaccessto adaptivetechnologyfor studentswith disabilities in computerlabs and the library. => Increaseaccessto studentsupportservicesthroughonline self~serviceapplicationsby implementing upgradesto the WebSmartsoftware.
