On the Cover: The theme “Inspiring Through Education” was submitted by Hector Zamora, a faculty member in Criminal Justice at the Valle Verde Campus. The theme is based on the opportunity that faculty have in sharing their life experiences, professional and personal, with students as well as inspiring them to excel academically. Faculty have the opportunity to create an environment that inspires students to prepare for a new or expanded career. Page 55 1 Office of the Vice-President of Instruction Fall 2013 Dear Faculty, As we prepare for the fall semester, it is an ideal time to think about the Faculty Development Week theme, “Inspiring Through Education” which is an important reflection on the work we accomplish together—faculty, administrators and staff—as a collaborative team at EPCC. As educators, we have a unique opportunity to have a powerful impact on our students’ lives and make our community a better place. Student engagement and completion remain our highest priorities as we move into the new academic year. This is a significant time for the Instructional Division. We have had many accomplishments and we are building great momentum for the future. Over this past year, a number of developments have helped to bolster our ability to inspire and educate. Recently we have completed important steps for the reaffirmation of our accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Once EPCC receives the final report, more details will be shared. Another significant effort was the development of our new Core Curriculum. This undertaking took more than a year and required the input and time of faculty from across all disciplines working together on this critical process. Shortly, the Core Curriculum will be submitted to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Once we hear their feedback, information will be shared. Special thanks to those who helped with these two crucial endeavors, including the Curriculum Committee and to all faculty and staff that assisted with these processes. As we continue to make progress toward achieving student success, we are also strengthening our reach in the community through our Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). For many semesters Grace Haddox has successfully served as the QEP Liaison and built a strong foundation for this initiative. Another area of notable progress is in the area of Student Success which has been directed by Irma Camacho for many years. Irma has helped this department grow and it has flourished under her leadership. Both Irma and Grace will be stepping down from their positions. Thanks to each of them for their hard work and dedication. The recruitment process is underway for the Director of QEP and Assessment and will begin shortly for the Director of Student Success. Another accomplishment to acknowledge is our efforts to strengthen our ranks of full time faculty. I am proud to say we have hired many new full time, tenure-track faculty who will help EPCC reach its academic vision. Join me in welcoming these new faculty to our team. EPCC remains committed to fostering an environment that will support each of you in your work. A new semester is always exciting, it is a time for fresh ideas, exploring possibilities and finding new ways to inspire others through education. Best wishes for a productive and rewarding semester. Many are woefully ignorant of cultures outside their personal experience. Every educator is expected to expose students to the wide diversity of world cultures, but they lack the knowledge or resources of other cultures particularly when their geographic area has little cultural diversity. Students and educators need preparation and education on diverse cultures greater than the material covered in a world history course. They need an awareness of our current and changing world and its peoples.
