EPCC Board of Trustees……………………………………………………. Page 49
Welcome Faculty! As the new academic year is upon us, I hope that each of you had a
restful and relaxing summer. Our theme for this semester’s Faculty
Development, “A Whole New World” truly resonates given the outstanding news the College received this summer regarding EPCC’s reaffirmation of
accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
(SACSCOC). This accomplishment could not have been achieved without the extraordinary
efforts of the entire college community, beginning with the Board of Trustees and each of the
respective divisions - led by Instruction and Research and Accountability.
I am pleased to announce that once again EPCC has been ranked 1st in the nation in awarding
associate degrees to Hispanic students by Hispanic Outlook Magazine. In addition to this
recognition, EPCC has qualified as one of the top 150 community colleges in the nation eligible
for the Aspen Institute’s Community College Excellence award. This is a tribute to the
commitment and dedication each of you has to the students we serve.
While EPCC has a long history and commitment to student success, reaffirmation allows us to
explore a whole new world of implementing innovative initiatives to further facilitate student
success. The implementation of Civitas Learning, a predictive analytics tool, is currently being
led by Information Technology. This new software will help us identify at-risk students and
allow for intervention during the course of the term.
Continuing with the theme “A Whole New World”, the College, led by Administration and
Financial Operations, has embarked on the development of a district-wide Master Plan that will
identify the projected needs of the district through 2025. During the upcoming Fall and Spring
term, a review of current campuses and the design of our new Fort Bliss campus will be
completed.
The division of Student Services is leading the way to create a new Student Orientation. The
orientation will incorporate face to face and online modules as well as workshops on the
campus the student will be taking classes at. I believe that this orientation program will help
tremendously in our efforts to increase student success on our campuses.
I would like to thank each of you for your commitment to EPCC and to student success. Have a
great Fall Semester!
Sincerely,
William Serrata, Ph.D.
President
1 Instruction and Workforce, Economic Development & Continuing Education
Dear Faculty,
The energy of a new semester is an exciting time for educators
and I am happy to welcome each of you back! This semester’s
Faculty Development Theme “A Whole New World” not only
represents the opportunities education opens for our students,
but also represents the new horizons we are embarking on as
an institution.
This past year, El Paso Community College (EPCC) has been on a steady path to address
areas of SACS concerns. By working together, we have successfully demonstrated our
compliance and I am pleased to say that our efforts have paid off. Thanks to your hard
work, our accreditation has been reaffirmed! This would not have been possible without the
dedication and commitment of each of you that helped with this crucial effort. We addressed
SACS Comprehensive Standard 3.3.1.1 and have significantly strengthened our instructional
programs by strengthening our Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). With the partnership of
Deans, Coordinators and many of you who served on hiring committees, we have met SACS
Core Requirement 2.8 and competitively hired 50 full-time faculty. Join me in extending a
warm welcome to these new faculty colleagues and know that this increase in our faculty
ranks will have many positive results. Of course, this was a college-wide effort and I also
want to share our sincere thanks with all of the other areas of the college that were vital to
this effort.
This semester brings new leadership to the instructional area and I am proud to welcome
Lucia Rodriguez as the new Director of Student Success. A big thank you goes out to Hector
Arriola for his hard work and leadership as Interim Director of Student Success this past
year. Student Success is a team effort and will require the collaboration of all of our faculty,
staff and the entire college family in order to build on the work already done.
Now, a new world lies ahead. We must continue to strive for excellence and take
instructional initiatives to the next level. Our Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is now in full
swing and we will continue our work on Student Learning Outcomes. The EPCC Early Alert
program will kick off this fall as will an adjunct engagement initiative that will provide more
in depth tools and opportunities for student/faculty engagement. The master planning
process is in progress and we look forward to the results later this fall. As part of this
process, we will be planning our new campus on Fort Bliss. These are certainly exciting
times to be at EPCC!
Have a fantastic Fall 2014 Semester!
Steven E. Smith
Vice President of Instruction

it puts a stop to the democratization process that made Russia more predictable to the U.S. strategy in the world. In the presentation we
will discuss the Crimean episode under the different lenses that political science and international relations offer to explain Russian
