Page 52 OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT Welcome! It is my pleasure to welcome you back and I wish everyone a great semester as we begin a new academic year. I trust that everyone had an opportunity to take some well-deserved time off to rest, relax and recharge. As one of the Aspen Prize Top 10 Community Colleges, EPCC is ranked among the best community colleges in the nation for our efforts to provide high quality educational opportunities and support services for our students. As I have said before, we could not have achieved this important recognition without each of you. While it takes an entire college team to make an impact, the efforts of our dedicated faculty to provide personalized instruction via an engaged classroom and supportive learning environments are absolutely critical to student success. Along with the many achievements of the past year, I also was fortunate to see many of you during the Town Hall Meetings held at each campus. These meetings are just one example of the many ways I am committed to keeping our college team informed about the numerous initiatives going on district-wide. It is my intent to continue to hold forums like these to keep you updated on our progress as well as receive important feedback. In the year ahead, I look forward to building on our previous successes and reaching even greater heights. Over the past year, we have been working on identifying specific steps to take in order to shape EPCC’s future. With input from faculty, staff, students and the community along with the professional guidance of the Smith Group JJR and Mijares and Mora, we have finalized a District Wide Master Plan including our sixth campus at Ft. Bliss. The final plan was presented to the Board of Trustees in July and will soon be available on the EPCC website. Next we will start to put these ideas and this important plan into action through recommendations to the Board for approval. As we move forward, EPCC wants and needs your continued engagement, ideas and efforts to make this plan a reality. Another important initiative that is nearly complete is the compensation and classification study. As you know, last fall, Evergreen Solutions began a comprehensive process to review EPCC salaries including holding sessions with faculty and staff, reviewing Job Assessment tools and conducting a representative Salary Market Survey. In June, the initial findings and recommendations were received. The Board of Trustees approved approximately $3 million to fund the implementation of recommendations from Evergreen. It is clear that due to the total cost of the recommendations, EPCC will have to implement the recommendations in a phased approach. The Board of Trustees and I recognize your extraordinary contributions to EPCC and the students we serve. We will continue to keep you informed on our progress with the study. Faculty commitment and innovation remain essential for our students. That is why EPCC is committed to providing faculty with the tools and training you need for teaching and service through the many workshops and activities offered during Faculty Development Week. As you participate in this week’s activities, we hope you are inspired and become energized for the new semester. As we move forward with implementing the Master Plan, I look forward to another academic year of enormous progress. Thank you for your dedication and all you do every day to make EPCC the progressive leader in high-quality, innovative, educational opportunities. May you have a rewarding and productive semester! Sincerely, William Serrata, Ph.D. President 1 Office of the Vice President, Instruction and Workforce Education jxÄvÉÅx YtvâÄàç àÉ à{x YtÄÄ fxÅxáàxÜ4 This week’s Faculty Development Theme “Mission With A Vision” is not only a reflection of the work we do every day to improve student’s lives, but also a reminder of the importance of achieving that goal with a visionary mindset. For the Instruction and Workforce Division, the past several months have been marked by significant milestones, achieving greater synergy, developing new partnerships and continuing important discussions about where we are headed. This past spring I was happy to meet with many of you during the Brown Bag lunch sessions at the MDP, VV and TM Campuses. As always I was impressed to hear about the innovative activities going on in your classrooms, the collaboration within and between disciplines and the connections you are making with our students. Most importantly, I valued the opportunity to listen to your concerns as well as discuss your ideas for the future. I appreciate faculty input and always consider your feedback as decisions are made. This fall, I will hold Brown Bag sessions at the RG and NW Campuses and I look forward to continuing this important dialogue. One comment I hear frequently and that is often mentioned to the Office of Faculty Development, is the request for more development opportunities for adjunct faculty. Last spring semester, Faculty Development Coordinator, Janine Rudnick kicked off our latest initiative designed with the needs of adjunct faculty in mind. All three sessions of a Student Engagement Techniques workshop were filled to capacity. As a result, we will be expanding this program this coming year. Last March, we had an important SACSCOC Site Visit of our Dual Credit Program. The site visit team reviewed all aspects of the program and visited many of our area high schools. After the visit, EPCC received the best possible outcome by the SACSCOC committee, which was a positive report with no recommendations. Special thanks to the many faculty and staff who helped with that visit and to our Dual Credit Partners at the school districts. Now, we must remain committed to achieving our daily goals but at the same time remain visionary. We must continue to go beyond what we are currently doing and take these initiatives to the next level. I hope that you will participate in the many 2 Office of the Vice President, Instruction and Workforce Education Faculty Development Week activities set up just for you. An additional opportunity to learn and prepare for the future is through participation in the college-wide Professional Development Day (PDD), which will be held Tuesday, September 8. Since it is important that all EPCC faculty and staff focus on development, campus services and offices will be closed during the day. PDD was changed slightly by allowing campuses to re-open in the evening so that night classes can resume as scheduled. This change was done based on your comments that were shared via the Faculty Senate. In closing, I want to thank you for all you do. Working together, we will achieve even more for our students, for ourselves and for El Paso Community College. Sincerely, Steven E. Smith Vice President Instruction and Workforce Education 3 From the Office of Faculty Development Welcome back!
