Kristicalledthemeetingtoorderat2:15PM,andreviewedtheagenda.Therewasaquorumpresent
andtheminuteswereapproved,withoutrevision.
DISCUSSIONANDACTION:RECOMMENDATIONSFORRECENTLYAPPROVEDBSIPROJECTS(Kristi)
TheBSIProjectforsupportinganSIforstatisticswasapproved.Math190hassubmittedaproposalfor
counseling.BSIrecommendsthemodelforMath811willbereplicated.Kristiwillfollow-upwithJayand
Marsha.Anotherproposalswassubmittedforstudentspeakers,withadjunctstobepaidtocoordinate
thespeakers.Thisistiedtoapaperprojectthatthestudentsareworkingon.Therewillbea
conversationontheintegratingthestudentappearanceswiththestudentwork.Aquestionwasaskedif
speakingisenoughtomeetBSIgoals.Compensationwasalsodiscussed.Bookvouchers,bookcards,and
giftcardshavebeenusedinthepast.Itmakessensetoprovidesomethingfortakingthetimeout.
Compensatingingeneralwasdiscussed;wehavelotsofstudentpanels.Aquestionwasasked:isthis
precedentsetting?TheCommitteewouldnotnecessarilyapproveofcompensation.Akindofgiftora
giftcardispreferred.Jenniferstatedwearemovingawayfromstipends.Krististatedwehavetimebut
thisisanunresolvedpartoftheproposal.Thestudentsarecomingtospeaktotheideaofstudent
success.Itwouldbeappropriatetofindfundsforathankyou.Itwasalsodiscussedthatweshould
capturethesepanels,forPR,andasdisseminationplan.Someofthestudentexperiencesaregolden.
DISCUSSIONANDACTION:PROJECTSANDBUDGETUPDATE(Kristi/Jennifer)
Thediscussionwasdividedintotwoparts:areviewofrolloverfunds(31139)andnewfunds(need
number).Theallocationof$12,000ofthebestpracticeswasdiscussed.Theitemslistedinclude:to
supportadjunctsthatareparticipatinginoverandabove;successworkshopswithothercommitteeson

campus;aspecificnationalequityproject.Thelastitemforinstructionalmaterialsisa“catch-all.”there
aresomematerialsthatarereallyexpensiveanditwouldbebeneficialtohaveresources(mathbooks,
asanexample,arereallyexpensive.)
Acommentwasmadeinsupportadjunctpay,butweneedcriteriaforthis,andcommitteeshould
developit.Weneedtotiecompensationtoaninitiative.Thecommitteeisopentohowitisusedbutwe
needagatekeeper.Studentshavebeendiscussingtheproblemoftextbooks;rentalsatCSMarenotas
robustasSkyline.Thegroupaskedthestudentrepresentativehowstudentsaccesstextbooks.Labsand
thelibraryarebestplaces.BSIwilldirecttheiractivitiesthere.Kristiaskedmemberstoprovidelistsof
neededmaterials.TheresareportedonaPlenarySessionofStateAcademicSenatestopped
compensationoffacultyoverchoosingopensources.Thiswasviewedaskickbacks.Thediscussion
relatestostudentequityplan.AliciaFrangosistheStudentSuccessCoordinator.Sheconducts
orientations,studentworkshops;andputtingtogethernewworkshops.VeryinterestedinBSI.
Therewasaconversationaboutthecostofcollege.TheStudentEquityPlanhasdirectsupportforthe
learningcommunities.Thiscouldbeusedtobuystudents’books.TheCommitteeneedstotalkto
studentsmoreabouthowtoprovideresources.Itwasalsosuggestedweputtextbookinformationinto
thefreshmanexperience.
Therewasamotiontoapprovetherolloverfundallocations.Themotionwasseconded,andapproved.
Thesecondpartoftheagendaitemwastodiscussthisyear’sfunds.Theitemslistedinclude:threeline
items($4,000each)foratotalof$12,000forbestpractices.ThisallocationgoestoCAE,andLauren
agreedtotakethisonandmovethingsforwardwithaworkingplan.
Mindset4.0(Theresa)isgettingstarted.ThisisasubsetofHabitsofMind.AnneFigonehastimeto
provideleadership.Thefundswillprovidewaysforfacultytograbtoolsandpayfortheleadership.We
needmorepeopleonthegroundtoexplorethisprogram.FundsarealsoearmarkedforResearch&
AssessmentandAdvisement&Counseling.Specificexpendituresinthesecategorieswillbediscussed
later.
Therewasamotiontoapprovethenewfundallocationsthathavebeendiscussed.Themotionwas
seconded,andapproved.

TheChancellor’sofficetracksoverallcommunitycolleges.Ourcommitteeneedstobeabletolookat
thiscohorttrackermakesureweareusingaccuratedata.Oneofthetoolsthatisusedtoexamineour
programanddetermineallocations.
TheideaofaccelerationismovingstudentsmorequicklythroughsequencecoursesinmathandEnglish
--withsupport--sothattheypersistinmeetingtheireducationalgoals.Accelerationcantakeavariety
offormsandisbeingdiscussedand/ortriedinEnglish,MathandESL.
TheEnglishAccelerationTeamreportedthattheyattendedtheCaliforniaaccelerationproject.They
haveattendedtwoworkshopssofar.TheyaredevelopingtwoENG105Accelerationpilotsectionsfor
Spring2016,whichwillallowstudentswhoplacelowerthanENG105toenroll(interestedENG848
students).Theywilltracktheresults.
Thedepartmentisinthemiddleofvotingonwhetherornottomovecutscorestoallowmorestudents
toplacehigherbutbeprovidedmoresupport.ThiswillaffectEnglish105.Seventypercentofstudents
willbeaffectedbecauserightnow70percentplaceinEnglish828,838or848.PRIEcameinwithdata
supportingthechange.Placementisnotanaccuratemeasure,sothatiswhythechangeisbeingmade.
Itislikeamainstreamingmodelunderthedefinition.InthepasttheprogressionwasEng:828to848
andthen100or105.ItispossiblethatEnglish848willnotbeofferedanylonger,afteratransition
period.IfyoupassEnglish838yougotoeitherEnglish100or105.TheEnglishAccelerationTeamis
usingamodelthatincludescourserestructuring,changingplacementpolicies,andmainstreamingwith
support.Aseparateissueisthetransferevaluationformoreaccurateplacements,potentiallusinga
highschooltranscript.
JayLehmanreportedfortheMathAccelerationTeamforPathwaytoStats,Math190.Studentsthat
passarithmetic,gointoMath190.SkylineandCanadaarecurrentlyusingthispathway.Thisisthefirst
semesterdoingMath190atCSM.Thecounselorshavebeenagreathelp.Thecurrentpathwayisonly
meantfornon-STEMmajorstudentswhoplantotakestatistics.Elementaryalgebrasuccessratesare19
percent,equivalenttotherestofthestate.Successratesarehigherthan50percent.Researchshows
thatstudentsdobetterwhentheycaninteractratherthanjusthavelecture.Iftheyworktogetherin
classanddebateabouthowtogetthecorrectanswers,theylearnmore.Jayisusingthismodeland
findingthatstudentsaremoreengaged.Morestudentsarecominginforofficehoursinthisnew
format.InadditiontoSupplementalInstruction,withtheBSICommitteeisfundingintheSpring,a
counselingcomponentisbeingpursued.
BSIMembers,MathandEnglishgroupsmetinbreakoutgroupstodiscussacrossdisciplinesandexplore
needsthesegroupshaveandwrappedupinthesmallgroups.
Kristiwillfollowupbyemailaboutnextsteps,remindingeveryonetospreadthewordthatBSIhas
resourcesavailableandwantstosupporttheseefforts.
