REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
Purpose
The Center for Academic Excellence Committee seeks to fund innovative, collaborative projects that
improve success of CSM students and advance institutional effectiveness.
Application Requirements
Application Checklist ¨ Applicant is a full-time faculty, or a part-time faculty working with at least one fulltime faculty co-applicant; or an administrator or staff member.
¨ Submission includes CAE Project Proposal and other supporting demonstrating how the
proposed project improves student success or institutional advancement.
¨ A copy of the application is sent to your division Dean
Funds Available
A total of $9,000 for 2015-16 is available to fund approved new projects and programs.
Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. The earlier a proposal is submitted in the academic
year, the more likely there is to still be funding available.
Types of Projects and Programs Funded
Internal, On-Campus Projects (Open to Adjunct and Full-Time Faculty)
• Cross-departmental or divisional collaborative projects which explore and/or enhance the
pedagogy and methodology of instructing students
• Projects which integrate instruction and student services in support of students
• Projects which focus on training of faculty, staff and/or administrators
• Individual or small group, short-term projects in support of student success
Application Procedure
1) Review CAE and CSM institutional documents and data (see “Resources” below).
2) Draft a 1-3 page Project Proposal that includes
a. Project Title
b. Primary contact, phone number, and smccd.edu email address
c. Co-applicant(s), phone number(s), and smccd.edu email address(es)
d. Narrative (2-4 pages) including project description and objectives, outcomes and deliverables,
plan for assessment of outcomes, dissemination plan, and project schedule.
e. Proposed budget (including hourly salaries, benefits, supplies, materials,
equipment, and other expenses; check with your division dean for current
benefit rates)

3) Please send an electronic copy of your completed proposal to Theresa Martin, Center for
Academic Excellence Chair, and Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza, Dean of Academic Support and
Learning Technologies, and to your Division Dean (see “Contacts” below).
4) If you have any questions during the application process, contact Theresa Martin.
Deadlines
Proposals may be submitted at any time, but for projects that require faculty reassigned time for
the following semester, applications meeting the following deadlines will receive priority:
The fourth Friday of October and the fourth Friday of February
Review Process
All applications will be reviewed by the Center for Academic Excellence Committee and applicants
notified within two weeks of receipt of all materials. Proposals will be reviewed and funded according
to CSM's planned objectives and student need. Projects which are team-based, promote student-centered
teaching methodology, and/or promote the interdisciplinary exchange of expertise, or integrate
Instruction and Student Services will be given priority.
Follow-up
Upon completion of the project, applicants will submit a Project Summary Report with related
project materials to the CAE Committee for dissemination. Applicants may be invited to share their
report with colleagues or the campus community at campus events. Applicants may re-apply the
following semester or year for additional funding in an effort to continue a project or program.
