tests or other measures. History and development of marriage as a social institution, including dating;
courtship; love; mate selection; personality adjustment in marriage; children; parenthood; the family;
anatomical, physiological, psychological, and sociological aspects of sex; religious factors; and divorce.
May not be taken for credit following SOCI 110. (AA: Area E5b, CSU: Area D/ Area E, UC: Area 4)

Student Learning Outcomes (Identify 1-6 expected learner outcomes using active verbs.)
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
SLO 1. Answer correctly university level objective questions on Marriage & Family theories, research,
assessments, and applications.
SLO 2. Answer correctly essay questions, which apply the theories, research, assessments, and
applications to student personal concerns, relationships and family dynamics.
SLO 3. Apply the course concepts, definitions, examples, facts, and information from articles in the news
to student personal and family relationships.
SLO 4. Complete interactive self-assessments on marriage and family, and use them to recognize and
analyze student’s own personal and family issues and potential problems.
SLO 5. Complete a systematic analysis, problem solving, and action planning process on student’s own
relationships and family issues and problems.
SLO 6. Develop, implement, and track results on personal relationship, marriage, and family plans.
SLO 7. Plan and execute a team presentation dramatizing key course insights on effective
communication, relationships, and sexuality.

During the course, students will complete the following:
1. Cumulative objective, true-false exams to test on the cumulative content of the textbook, lectures, and
discussions.
2. Essay tests to apply the theories, research, assessments, and applications of course concepts to
student’s own situations.
3. Individual work, small group discussions, and large group discussions, which apply course content to
self and others.
4. Marriage and Family self-assessment surveys/scales, using the assessments to analyze student’s own
situation and develop action plans for improvement.
5. Problem Solving Analysis and Action Planning Processes.
6. Reports on student’s implementation of their plans and the results achieved in improving personal
relationships.
7. Planning discussions and one (1) final team dramatic presentation on key course concepts.
