SCHOOL REPORTS – NOVEMBER 2005
GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Teachers at all grade levels are assessing students and using the data to improve
academic performance. Kindergarten and first grade completed DIBELS testing, giving
teacher’s baseline information allowing them to better individualize language arts
instruction. Students will be retested to gauge progress. One of the ways teachers are
helping meet the needs of students who are considered “intensive,” is with the Project
Read phonics-based materials being piloted in grades K-2. Teachers of grades 3-5 are
administering pre and post tests for each math chapter. Pre-testing encourages
differentiating instruction to meet student needs, and gives students a clearer
understanding of what they need to know and be able to do.
Second grade students in the classrooms of La’Shawn Martinez, Erica Micklin, Marilyn
Williams, and Stephanie Young created Pumpkin Glyphs (pictorial representations of
data). Students drew jack-o’-lanterns whose features were determined by questions
students answered about Halloween and then used the pumpkin glyphs to gather and
compare data and create graphs. Students also practiced sequencing skills and writing
clear directions by compiling a recipe book of their favorite Thanksgiving foods.
This month, the third grade teachers continued the team teaching of the science lab. Mr.
Keeler and Mr. Davies moved forward in the chemistry unit. Ms. Pinsley & Ms. Robinson
continued their study of electricity and magnetism. The students also enjoyed the science
court interactive CD-ROM. In social studies, the third graders are preparing to study the
geography of their communities, while in Mr. Sharp’s art classes learned about the
Greeks and the Romans, creating a faux Roman busts.
Students in Marianne Whiteman and Mark Paikoff’s fifth grade science classes took a
virtual field trip to Alaska to strengthen their study of Ecosystems. The classes
participated in a distance learning activity with the Alaska Sea Life Center titled “Eat or Be
Eaten in Alaska.” A guide from Seward, AK took them on a virtual journey through a
description of different food chains in the Alaskan Wild. Students were able to identify
living creatures that fit into the categories of producers (plants), herbivores (plant-eating
animals), carnivores (meat-eating animals), and detritovores (scavengers). They then
took a virtual field trip to the different wildlife at the sea life center on the Alaskan coast!
The students were able to ask their guide many questions about Alaska’s ecosystems.
They learned that even though it is thousands of miles away, Alaskan plants and animals
follow the same basic concepts of food chains.
On the safety and wellness front, the Glenwood Incident Management Team met
following the September fire drills to evaluate these first drills of the school year and to
develop goals for future drills. We revised our exit procedures, as we do annually, to
accommodate for classroom changes and to plan for our physically challenged students.
We updated our Redi Action Guide and reviewed it with the Glenwood staff. In addition to
the action guides, our emergency folders contain updated class lists and our fire drill
attendance cards. All classrooms have plastic gloves and a bag of absorbent sawdust.
We conducted an “obstructed exit” fire drill in October. As part of our school-wide
wellness program Mrs. Taylor is continuing the Wednesday Wellness Tip—a weekly email health tip to our staff.
Glenwood students in grade three through five elected student council officers after an
assembly where each officer candidate presented a speech and a campaign poster.
Students were able to cast their votes electronically on a program set up on classroom
computers. The 2005-06 officers are: Michael Cohen, President; Samantha Muncer, Vice
President; and Sierra Savoy, Secretary. Each classroom in grades one through five also
elected two representatives to the council. This year the Glenwood Student Council will
be sponsored by Mrs. Taylor, school nurse, and Miss Masterson, guidance counselor.
The council already has plans in place to publicize our school-wide Thanksgiving food
drive for City Team in Chester.
On October 11, library technician Kathy Cook participated in the Delaware County Book
Review Program. Publishers provide copies of brand new titles, and librarians may keep
those books they review. Mrs. Cook obtained ten recently-published titles for the
Glenwood library, including non-fiction, novels, and picture books valued at over $150.00!
Later in the month, Mrs. Cook and other members of the RTM library staff attended
Access Pennsylvania training. Over 2,875 libraries in our state are now members of the
Access PA database, and available holdings number over 50 million. We can offer online
services including Content Café’ (summaries and reviews of recently-published books)
and DartClix (recommended web sites with appeal to the general public).
Check out our web site for pictures of two special events: the Gabe & Izzy assembly that
kicked off out anti-bullying campaign, and the Walkathon, a PTG-sponsored event that
promoted health and a sense of community while raising money to renovate our
kindergarten playground.
INDIAN LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Mr. Washington’s and Mrs. Hendrixson’s fourth grade classes took advantage of the great
natural resource of Ridley Creek State Park, and tied it in with the Fourth Grade Science
curriculum for Land and Water. Students were able to get an up close view of the stream
table that we have been modeling in science. In addition, we were able to use this
experience to enhance efforts to improve student's writing, by having them create a
descriptive narrative piece about an animal or insect that they observed while on the field
trip.
Art Classes at Indian Lane - First graders are learning about landscapes. They are
focusing on artist Vincent Van Gogh and his painting, Starry, Starry Night. The children
created their own paintings experimenting with various marks the brush can make.
Second graders are reviewing the art of India. They read the story of Rama and Siva.
They are creating some monster-like paintings emphasizing portraiture. The children
listened to Indian music while they painted. Third graders are forming canopic jars which
originated in Egypt. The students' jars are made of clay. They are learning the slab and
pinch-pot method. Fourth graders are pursuing the art of Andy Warhol. They are
creating their own prints. These prints are made from carved linoleum blocks. Fifth
graders are highlighting artist Miriam Schapiro. They are rendering figure drawings which
will be worked into a collage-style painting.
Chess Club meets every Tuesday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Twenty seven students have
signed up to participate in the club. Students receive a 15 minute mini lesson to sharpen
their chess skills and spend the rest of the period engaged in chess matches. Snacks are
also provided for the children. Tournament play will start in December.
Kindergarten classes have been developing our number sense by working on such things
as set making and graphing. In language arts, we have been busy learning the letters
and their sound/symbol relationship. In addition, we are developing our phonemic
awareness and working in our journals. Halloween was a big day for us as we paraded
for our families and friends.
The Math Coach has been hard at work in the following ways: Third grade has worked
with place value, including reading/writing large numbers, expanded form, completed a
PSSA-like pre-test (multiple choice and open-ended short answer), pumpkin ordered pair
picture, various addition and subtraction activities, working on subtraction with regrouping,
and recognizing money.
The third grade classes held Harvest Day the morning of the Halloween Parade. Harvest
Day has each classroom doing a festive autumn activity and each class rotates through
the all of the activities. We read Halloween stories, made scrapbook memory pages,
whipped up some witches' brew and wrote our own creative brew recipes. It is a fun way
to spend productive time on a very exciting day!
Fourth grade has worked with place value as well, and expanded form,
multiplication facts (2's and 3's), and rounding, pumpkin ordered pair picture, and
started a PSSA-like pre-test.
Fifth grade has also worked with place value and expanded form, place value of
decimals,
adding/subtracting
decimals,
rounding
(whole
numbers/decimals),
exponents, commutative property, multiplication facts (2's and 3's), pumpkin ordered pair
picture, completed a PSSA-like pre-test, began two-digit multiplication review, and began
money word problems.
While studying ecosystems and building ecosystems in the classroom, Mr. Sitkowski and
Mrs. Venuto took their 5th grade classes to Ridley Creek State Park for a stream and tree
study. Students had to identify leaves and aquatic insects. Found in the stream that day
were many Stonefly nymphs (Plecoptera), Water Pennies (Coleoptera), Crayfish
(Decapoda), Damselfly nymphs (Zygoptera), Dragon Fly nymphs (Anisoptera), Midge Fly
larva (Nematocera), and minnows. The American Stag Beetle was also found under a few
logs. Classes looked for the Mayfly nymph (Ephemeroptera) but to no avail. The PH test
registered 7.5. Fun and learning were had by all.
On Thursday, October 20th, the Penncrest High School String Ensemble, under the
direction of Antoinette Lyons, made a visit to the district elementary orchestra rehearsal,
which is held at Indian Lane Elementary School every Thursday. The Elementary
Orchestra is directed by James Walls and is comprised of 4th and 5th grade strings
musicians from all four elementary schools. The high school students helped by tuning
instruments, answering questions, and providing musical support. After the rehearsal, the
Penncrest String Ensemble stayed at Indian Lane and performed a concert. As a finale,
the high school and elementary strings students performed the Nutcracker March
together. It was a great experience for all involved and we would like to thank the
Penncrest String Ensemble and Mrs. Lyons for sharing their talents.
During the past few weeks Mrs. Huebner’s class has been learning about temperature
and how to read a thermometer. On Wed., Nov. 2, we took our thermometers outside to
check the temperature. After about 20 minutes we looked at the thermometers and found
that the temperature was 70 degrees. When we came inside we recorded the
temperature on a chart and in our temperature notebooks. We will continue to do the
same activity as the year goes on to compare the different temperatures throughout the
school year.
MEDIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Solar Power - Thus far we have generated 75 kilowatt hours at the Media Elementary
School “Power Plant.” Media Borough successfully applied for a grant which funded the
installation of a 4.8 kw solar electric system at our school. Crystalline photovoltaic (PV)
modules mounted on the east roof will produce DC electricity from sunlight and deliver the
power to inverters, which convert the DC power to high quality AC power used for the
energy supply at the site building (Media School). The PV system power works alongside
the power supplied by PECO Energy via the grid. When PV output is less than the energy
used at the site, the grid supplies the difference. If PV output exceeds site usage, the
excess energy is delivered back to the grid for use by other PECO customers. The result
is lower monthly utility bills and extra power to supplement the power supply.
Solar PV electricity has no moving parts and is nearly maintenance free. The Susatinable
Development Fund (SDF) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Energy
Harvest Grant are covering the entire cost of the project. This is the second major solar
project for Media Borough.
MESA Environmental Science Inc. is a SDF certified solar installer. They did the
installation at our school and will continue to interact with us for educational programs on
solar power/sustainable energy. This project is unique and highly desirable because of
public awareness and adding to the borough’s inventory of PV making Media Borough the
leading municipality in the production of clean energy in the state.
Kudos to Media Councilman Pete Alyanakian for initiating the project. Mr. Alyanakian,
engineers from MESA, and representatives from Congressman Weldon’s office and the
Media Borough attended our ribbon cutting ceremony.
Media is the only school in the commonwealth that produces its own solar power.
Memorial Garden Installed - Vincent Walsh of Walsh Landscaping (a wonderful Media
School parent) installed “The Marg Baker Memorial Garden” on the Monroe Street side of
the building. It is a lovely compliment to our reading garden. Marg Baker was a president
of our PTG who committed herself to the service of children. Marg always made
decisions based on what was right for children and their families. She lost her fight with
breast cancer last October and she is greatly missed. Marg Baker’s son, Paul MickleBaker, attended the dedication. Paul and his sister are currently attending Penncrest High
School. The garden was funded by donations from friends of the Mickle-Baker family.
Meet Marty Mustang - We have a new mascot (costume), a large royal blue mustang who
we call “Marty.” Marty met the children for the first time at our October all-school
assembly. He was quite an important part of our Fall Masquerade (Halloween Parade) as
well. In honor of Marty’s arrival, the entire staff dressed as cowboys and cowgirls at the
Fall Masquerade. The weather was beautiful and we had a mighty fine time!
Special thanks to Chief Martin Wusinich and his officers who visited us to talk about
Halloween safety and who also attended our Halloween parade. Chief Marty was
honored to have our new mascot named for him. We have a wonderful working
relationship with the Media Borough Police which we think is terrific.
Community Day - Our second graders celebrated Community Day which was reformatted
a bit this year. After performing for their families in the auditorium (community songs, a
poem and other information), the children broke into small groups to meet with a variety of
community workers. Students learned about being a doctor, computer technician, speech
therapist, nurse and French teacher for example. Each classroom created and named a
town, elected a mayor, and selected an occupation to represent. It was a fun and
educational event.
From the Library - We’ve been busy weeding many well-loved books from the shelves of
the library. Many thanks to the parent volunteers that helped in this important and
necessary project. Thanks also to the parents who helped process the books for
withdrawal.
After our teachers perused the withdrawn books, we needed to find a home for what
remained. Some of the destinations include school’s in Chester, the “Literacy Lifeboat”
(sponsored by the Delaware County schools for the victims of Katrina), and the Texas
Library Association that is also distributing books in the Gulf region to help restock and
start-up schools devastated by Katrina.
Mr. DeLeo’s class helped pack the many boxes of books. They designed greeting cards
that were enclosed in each box. One of our parents arranged for and funded the shipping.
A library tea was held for parent volunteers. The volunteers play a really strategic role this
year because of the change to library as teacher prep time. We have a great group and
are looking to recruit many others.
Mrs. Kotch and Librarian, Mrs. Jackie Matusow, participated in a special reading night at
Barnes and Noble (Lawrence Park). Media families were invited to attend a story hour
where Mrs. Kotch and Mrs. Matusow read. If they made any purchases, a percentage
was given to the PTG to fund their many activities.
Passports to History - Our fourth graders are participating once again in the “Passport to
History” program sponsored by The Delaware County Historical Society. Students are
challenged to visit at least five historical sites in our county. Fourth grade took its first
walking trip to The Delaware County Institute of Science. They learned about animals
native to Pennsylvania and saw many different scientific collections. We had an assembly
introducing the program to our fourth graders.
Staff Development Updates - Mrs. Kotch, along with a team from RTM, attended a
session of the Delaware Valley Achievement Consortium at The University of
Pennsylvania. The speaker was Glenn Singleton whose topic was “Courageous
Conversation and Courageous Leadership: Courageous Conversation about Race.” Mr.
Singleton’s presentation was extremely thought provoking.
Mrs. Kotch and Mrs. Robin Smith (grade 3) attended the DVASCD Fall Conference. The
presenter, Pedro Noguera, spoke on “Creating Conditions to Close the Achievement
Gap.” He explored how schools can develop an effective partnership with parents to
raise achievement and how data can be used to develop school reforms.
Mrs. Kotch was also a guest presenter at a Villanova University graduate class on
leadership.
Art teacher Jana Maxwell attended a National History Day workshop at The Historical
Society of Pennsylvania. She is working on a partnership between our district and the
Caleb Pusey House in Upland and gleaned valuable information from this conference.
Mrs. Maxwell also received a fourth year scholarship from The Barnes Foundation to
continue her studies of art criticism.
Three Media teachers attended a Lucy Calkins writing workshop, “The Writing Workshop:
Turn Your Students into Real Writers.” Three other media teachers attended a PSSA
math workshop, “Making the Grade: Results You Can Count On.” The presenter was J.
Michael Dugan who is a math curriculum specialist. Media fifth grade teachers attended
a writing workshop sponsored by the Pennsylvania Writing Project, “Best
Practices/Preparing Students for the PSSA.” It was held at ET Richardson Middle
School. Librarian Jacqueline Matusow attended a workshop, “Boys and Libraries, Make
the Connection.” The workshop was sponsored by the Delaware County Library System.
Two support staff members attended a workshop, “Addressing Challenging Behavior.”
Additionally, our November 8 staff development day was very useful. Teachers in
kindergarten participated in DIBELS training with reading consultant Helen ConahanDetry, teachers in grade 2 visited Starkweather Elementary School to see Project Read
in action, music teachers attended a PMEA workshop, intermediate grade teachers had
training in Boxer Math and spent time aligning the state assessment anchors with our
curriculum, Phys. Ed. teachers worked on the SPARK curriculum, nurses attended a
county-wide training, and reading teachers were trained in KidBiz (a program of
comprehension activities). It was a busy, thoughtfully planned, and productive day.
The district IST teachers visited Garnet Valley Elementary School where their IST teacher
was awarded a Keystone Technology Grant for the “paperless management” of the IST
process. Alicia Murphy coordinated the visit.
PTG News - Our PTG has been very busy. They held our first “Donuts and Dudes” early
morning coffee. The purpose was for families to make new friends as they shared a donut
and some coffee/juice. It was a very well attended event. They also had their annual
Harvest Fair. Despite the inclement weather, a great time was had by all. They have also
sponsored a “Dine Out in Media Night” and several “shopping nights” (Barnes and Noble,
Learning Express and Five Below). They have also instituted weekly mailers which are
working well and saving paper. This is a very active PTG group and we are very
appreciative of all their efforts.
The first meeting of the Principal’s Advisory Board discussed many topics including
redistricting, full day kindergarten, focused learning time, and our health/wellness plan.
ROSE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Art Room Happenings: First graders in Mr. Sharp’s art class learned about the traditional
subject matter in art known as a landscape. After looking at three different types of
landscapes paintings, they arrived at a definition of what a landscape is and what it
includes – a picture of the outdoors that can include trees, plants, land, sky, buildings,
people, or animals. The boys and girls also talked about various types of horizon lines –
flat, hilly, and mountainous. Students were given a thin strip of oak tag and were asked to
draw a line on it to represent the kind of horizon line that they wanted to put in their
picture. After cutting it out, they placed it near the top of a white sheet of paper. Using oil
pastels, students colored lines that started near the top of the oak tag and went onto the
white paper to give the impression of plants, brush, and a hill. Students shared these
templates with each other at the table and repeated this several times down to the bottom
of the paper to give the effect of overlapping hills and mountains. They then painted the
top edge of their pictures with watercolor to create a sky.
Fifth graders in Mr. Sharp’s art classes portrayed movement in art by drawing a figure in
motion. They first looked at the work of Miriam Schapiro, an artist who is associated with
the feminist movement. She often uses the traditionally female tasks of embroidery,
crocheting, and quilting in her multi-media paintings. The students took turns being
models to show the stop action of a figure in motion. Students learned to draw the figure
by first blocking in shapes for the parts of the body, paying attention to the proportions,
drawing lightly so that they could easily erase, building up the figure, and finally adding
details. Their drawings were outlined with oil pastels, just as Schapiro would have done.
They filled in their figures using patterns of lines and shapes. Color was added using
watercolors. The figures were then cut out and glued down to a new sheet of paper so
that they overlapped.
Staff Development: Ms. Susan Howe has been using the “Teacher as Trainer” model to
help teachers implement Boxermath into their classrooms. She has been meeting in the
computer lab with special education teachers, the IST teacher and third grade teachers
both individually and in small groups to explore the many uses of Boxermath.
Physical Education Happenings: Mrs. Heiland, the physical education teacher, reports
that during the month of November, the Developmental Kindergarten, Developmental
Primary, 1st and 2nd grades are focusing on underhand and overhand throwing and
catching. Third and fourth grades are work ing on ball skills such as dribbling, passing,
trapping, kicking and shooting. They are honing their skills for maintaining possession of
the ball and strategies for offense and defense. Fifth grade students are working on ball
skills such as carrying, running, dodging, throwing, catching, passing, snapping and
punting. They also are practicing the skills used for maintaining possession of the ball
and strategies for offense and defense.
Music Happenings: Students in 4th & 5th grades are preparing for their winter concert on
Thursday, December 8th. They are learning songs to the musical entitled "Paint the
Town December" Third graders have all received their recorders and are now learning to
play the notes B & A. All grades are focusing on learning songs and playing instruments
focusing on the Thanksgiving theme.
Health Happenings: This year the state has mandated school nurses to calculate body
mass index (BMI) for all students in grades K-4. BMI is an indicator of weight issues that
can bring with it a multitude of health and psychological problems. At Rose Tree
Elementary School, we wanted to be proactive towards this growing concern. It has been
proven that along with proper diet, physical activity is the other key factor in maintaining
good health. Therefore, we were excited to announce the formation of the Energizer Club
for grades 1-5. On October 26th, Diane Heiland (PE Teacher) and Kathy Johnson (School
Nurse) started meeting with club members twice a week before school. Our activities are
low impact so that everyone interested can fully participate. Our hope is that participants
in the Energizer Club, like “the bunny”, will keep on going: with more energy throughout
their day; with a focus on keeping active throughout the week; and with a commitment to
staying healthy their entire lifetime.
Developmental Kindergarten & Primary Happenings: Mrs. Hetherington's kindergarten
and 1st grade students had a great time celebrating Halloween with Mrs. MayfieldPinkett's kindergarten students and Mrs. Allen's 1st grade students. Fun was had by all
dressing up in costumes, eating Halloween snacks, and crafting Halloween projects!
First Grade: The first graders enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast to celebrate and remember
the first Thanksgiving. We shared different foods with each other. We remembered that
even though each of us is different, we are thankful for the good things in our lives. A
wonderful time was had by all.
Third Grade: The students have just concluded their unit on the “Solar System”. Each
student researched the planet of their choice and then could choose to do a mobile,
poster, or diorama to depict their planet. In the science lab each teacher demonstrated for
their class experienced what it would be like to watch a meteor “burn up” as it entered our
atmosphere. The children went out on the playground and measured out the distance of
the planets from the sun (to scale, of course). These two activities were great for visual
learners. Within each unit we try to differentiate activities. The students also utilized the
shared folder on the computer this month to play an interactive Jeopardy review game on
the Solar System. The game was created by Mr. Davies' class at Glenwood.
Fourth Grade Happenings: After reading a story about Lou Gehrig, the fourth grade
students created their own trading cards. They chose various athletes that they admired
such as Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, and Kristi Yamaguchi. The fourth graders
researched the lives of athletes using the internet in the computer lab. They wrote
biographical information and interesting facts on the back of each card and illustrated the
front with a picture just like real trading cards. Students shared the cards with each other
and then hung them in the hallway.
Fifth Grade Happenings: Students in grade five finished reading Sing Sown the Moon, by
Scott O'Dell, and Sees Behind Trees, by Michael Dorris. They participated in literature
circles, which featured roles such as: illustrator, advice columnist, time liner, discussion
leader, and read-aloud master. As a culminating activity, students planned and created
showcase activities which were presented to the class to share each group's
understanding of the books. Some examples of showcase activities included news
broadcasts, character impersonations, scrapbooks, and readers’ theatre. The fifth grade
students enjoyed this new way of celebrating the completion of their group novels.
Math Happenings: Math Lab is underway in full force, 70 students from Glenwood, Indian
Lane, and Rose Tree Elementary began with their first sessions on Monday, October 10,
2005. All students have completed or will complete a PSSA-like pretest to determine
where best to concentrate remediation efforts. Rose Tree students have practiced place
value concepts, rounding, elapsed time, addition (3rd and 4th) multiplication facts (4th
and 5th) and ordered pairs. Third grade is currently working on Subtraction with
regrouping. This month fifth grade will be addressing two and three digit multiplication
and factors/multiples and fourth grade will be starting our problem solving framework.
Guidance: During the month of November, Ms. Hilden helped the students of Special K
run a fundraiser called “Dollars for Turkeys”. Staff and students purchase a paper turkey
to decorate and display for $1.00. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to purchase
ACME cards for families in our school to be used during the upcoming holiday season.
Professional Development Opportunities: On November 7th, Ms. Ellen Sosangelis and
Mrs. Nancy Gheysens, the Instructional Support Teacher, attended the DVASCD Fall
Conference at Haverford High School. The featured speaker was Dr. Pedro Noguera,
professor at NYU, who addressed “Creating Conditions to Close the Achievement Gap.”
During this session, he explored how to support and cultivate effective teaching in
schools, how schools can develop partnerships with parents to raise achievement, and
how data can be used to develop school reforms that lead to changes in a school’s
culture and structure.
On November 9th Ms. Ellen Sosangelis and five members of RTES’s staff attended a
district-wide training for MAP (Measure of Academic Progress). This new benchmark
assessment will be implemented for the first time in December in grades 2-5 at the
elementary level.
American Education Week Open House: Rose Tree Elementary School will celebrate
American Education Week on Friday, November 18. Many parents will take advantage of
this opportunity to participate in this nation-wide celebration. In addition to observing
wonderful classroom lessons/activities, parents may choose to attend workshops
presented by teachers on two important topics: the district’s literacy Initiative (DIBELS
and Project Read) and the revised Elementary Progress Report.
SPRINGTON LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Springton Lake Middle School teachers participated in a building in-service day. In the
morning, the teachers were trained on how to use My Learning Plan and how to create
their teacher web pages through the RTM site. Teachers also chose the sessions they
found of interest to attend at the National Middle School Conference in Philadelphia on
Friday, November 4. In addition, the math department met with a math representative to
discuss the new Math PSSA rubric. In the afternoon, the staff attended a session on
Differentiated Instruction. Dr. Taylor gave a 40 minute overview of Differentiated
Instruction. This led into viewing an ASCD Curriculum video by Carol Ann Tomlinson, a
highly respected educator whose research focus is DI. The video demonstrated how DI is
effectively used in a middle school classroom. Lastly, the new lesson plan template was
introduced to the staff. The new template incorporates teachers' use of DI in their lessons
along with backwards design. The staff was asked to differentiate and teach a lesson by
November 8th's in-service day so that a productive follow-up session can be held with
colleagues. The math department had Charlie Wayne from the Department of Education
train teachers on how to score the new open-ended questions. This training was very
valuable as teachers gained insight on how the open-ended questions are created and
then scored.
As a kick-off to our Olweus Bullying Prevention Program for 2005-2006, Gabrielle Ford
and her dog Izzy were featured in three grade level assemblies. Gabe is a disabled
young woman who shares her personal experiences about the harm caused by acts of
bullying. Accompanied by her disabled pet, Izzy, she touched the hearts of our students
and staff.
6th, 7th, & 8th graders enrolled in the gifted program at SLMS participated in a distance
learning event at Penncrest High School. The topic of BATS! was specifically scheduled
at the end of October to tie in with the Halloween season as students learned the habits
and habitats of these flying mammals including vampire bats. The environmental impact
these creatures make also cannot be denied as they literally devour tons of insects every
night. The presenter was from the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh and interacted with the
students on a variety of bat facts and myths. This video conference was the second in a
year-long series of events centering on the AGP theme of the environment for 2005-2006.
Our 6th grade homework club is beginning this week. The club is designed for 6th
graders who need homework support and do not get the support at home. We are
beginning the club with six students and the guidance counselors Alison Harrison, Margie
Gilroy and Sue Griffin will work in conjunction with Kathy White and Carin Newsome, two
sixth grade teachers.
The guidance counselor’s have begun their lessons. The eighth graders are participating
in a lesson on Diversity and stereotypes. In this lesson, students are asked to examine
stereotypes and judgments people make based on appearance. The seventh grade are
participating on a lesson called Problem Solving which focuses on the problems that
teenagers face and finding solutions to difficult situations. Some seventh graders are also
participating in an Anger Management group while sixth graders participated in a lesson
on Friendship and a group on Stress Management.
Some of Mrs. Lamont’s math classes investigated Integers and their operations using the
laptops. Students found various interactive math websites on Mrs. Lamont's web page.
Other classes used the TI 83 calculators to investigate slopes of lines. They drew
conclusions about the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. Students also learned
how to solve systems of linear equations graphically.
American Association of School Librarians Conference - From October 6-8, LaVerne
Motley attended the American Association of School Librarians Conference in Pittsburgh.
She attended a pre-conference workshop entitled Poetry Alive! about using poem
performance as a method of teaching and understanding poetry. Other workshops
included an “exploratorium” about best library practices, using primary sources and
blogging, teaching note-taking techniques, and transitions for young adult book talks.
Other highlights were key-note addresses by Coach Carter of movie fame and youngadult author Chris Crutcher. Mrs. Motley was also invited to speak at a conference by
Follett Library Software Company, the provider we are now using in RTM. At a breakfast
for users and prospective users, she addressed how she uses the online catalog in her
teaching to improve student achievement.
Delaware County Book Review Session - On October 11, Mrs. Motley and the elementary
librarians attended the first 2005-2006 Delaware County Book Review Session of the year
at Upper Darby High School. In return for reading and submitting reviews for publishers,
librarians have the opportunity to select new titles which they may keep for their school
collections at no cost. Springton Lake Library was able to add $607.48 worth of new
books following this review session.
Governor’s Institute for Information Literacy and Reading - LaVerne Motley attended a
Steering Committee wrap-up session for the 2005 Governor ’s Institute for Information
and Literacy and Reading. Carol Adukitis, Institute Evaluator for the state, presented
her formal evaluation for the entire staff in Williamsport. Another session will be offered in
August of 2006 with modifications based on experience from this past year.
Access PA/POWER Library Fall Training - All district librarians attended the annual fall
training session required of participants in the Access PA Consortium throughout the
state on October 20. During the morning, participants learned of the year’s progress in
both ventures as well changes in procedures and practices. The remainder of the day
was spent on providing training on the use of new databases available through the
POWER Library. Databases which received the most detailed attention were DartClix,
EBSCO Admin, History Reference Center, and Oxford Reference.
Food for Thought Café - On October 24 the Food for Thought Café, Springton’s monthly
get-together for students who love to read and write, met for the first time during all gradelevel lunches. Students have an opportunity to talk about books they are reading or share
original poems, stories or essays with others of similar interests. Now in its third year, the
café hosted a record number of sixth-graders this month -- thirty-two of them, in fact.
Online Resources Information - Students have been coming to the library for a “cook’s
tour” of online resources available to them. Mrs. Motley has been presenting sixth and
seventh grade students with an overview of resources they can access from online
databases -- both district and POWER Library sources – and then providing a handout
that has directions and passwords for accessing these from home.
Research Projects - AGP students from Mrs. Sangillo’s seventh grade language arts
classes continue to work on their year-long research projects. Mrs. Sangillo and Mrs.
Motley have collaborated to provide students with an overview of the research process as
well as detailed instruction on the note-making process.
Seventh grade language arts students from Ms. Cooper’s classes discussed plagiarism
and received instruction on strategies to help them avoid it by making notes for research
in their own words. Mrs. Diaz’s seventh grade French students used books and web sites
to research famous French people while Mrs. Gault’s eighth grade Spanish students
researched historical Hispanic figures for a Day of the Dead project. Mrs. McCarthy’s
eighth grade social studies students investigated Ancient Egypt and then created either a
museum pamphlet or an ancient Egyptian game to demonstrate their findings. Mrs.
Stephens’s eighth grade AGP students have been completing pre-search activities in
anticipation of their research and subsequent Celebration of the Mind projects. Mrs.
Shacklady-White's language arts classes have been working on learning how to make
connections to what they read in order to improve comprehension skills. Students have
been reading a unit of short stories with the theme "We All Make Mistakes". For the short
story, "Midas and the Golden Touch" , students participated in a RAFT activity , which is a
strategy for differentiating instruction, and composed friendly letters from and to
characters in the text. Students processed their letters with the new student laptops
purchased for the special education department. Learning Support homerooms
participated in the Red Ribbon Week door decorating contest, and Miss Viso's class won!
The students created their own video rap!
Art - Eighth grade students have begun a new lesson which focuses on the art of lettering
as well correlates to their study in social studies to the art of the Middle Ages including
illuminated manuscripts. In addition to integrating the principles of design that were
studied in their last unit, students are focusing on proportion, shape and quality of line and
color theory. Students will be reading about the art in the Middle Ages to reinforce their
appreciation of the achievements at that time period. Also students will investigate the
role art plays according the needs of the culture. Eighth grade students will have the
opportunity to incorporate resource images obtained off of the internet in their lettering
project related to illuminated letters. Grade seven students are finishing their portrait
drawing. Soon students will begin exploring art form and media through a reading
assignment. Students will then use this reading to help compare and contrast the art of
drawing depending upon the media used by comparing a scratchboard drawing that they
will complete with the colored pencil drawing used in their previous project. Students also
have examined a work of art by the contemporary artist David Hockney. The elements of
line, shape and texture will be explored. Grade six students are now beginning an
exploration of clay hand building learning about the qualities of clay in the making of a
textured piece of pottery. This unit will include readings about texture and pottery.
Students will eventually learn about the basics of glazing. In Mrs. Prior's sixth grade art
class we began to implement Differentiated Instruction to learn about the Elements of Art:
line, color, value, texture, shape, form, and space. Students broke up into groups, read
about the Elements of Art, and made posters defining and illustrating the words students
then presented their posters to the class. They are now recognizing and making
connections to the Elements of Art used in works of art and in our projects. Eighth
graders are going through the same process with the Principles of Design.
From November 9th to 16th SLMS celebrated National French Week with many activities,

DIBELS Screening
Dr. Golder, the Director of Teaching and Learning for Elementary Education,
presented an overview of the DIBELS screening which just took place in all of RTM’s
kindergarten and first grade classrooms. DIBELs (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early
Literacy Skills) are a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early
literacy development. They are designed to be short fluency measures used to
regularly monitor the development of pre-reading and early reading skills.
The measures were developed based on the essential early literacy domains
discussed in both the National Reading Panel (2000) and National Research Council
(1998) reports to assess student development of phonological awareness, alphabetic
understanding, and automaticity and fluency.
Results of the DIBELS screenings are used to predict individual student reading
development and to inform teachers’ differentiated instruction.
NWEA – Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
Dr. Golder, Dr. Lombardo, and Dr. Taylor updated the board on the new Measures of
Academic Progress (MAP) Assessment that will be used beginning in December.
MAP is a product of the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), a non-profit
organization serving over two million students in 46 states. MAP is an assessment
that students take entirely via computer. It capitalizes on adaptive user technology to
create a unique and personalized set of questions for each student. The current
implementation plan calls for annual administration of MAP in the fall and spring in
grades 2 through 10, which will provide reliable and valid data across a broader span
of grades than previous assessments. MAP will replace both homemade teacher
benchmarks and the Terra Nova tests previously given in grades 2, 4, and 7. MAP
provides a wide variety of reports. One of its chief virtues is immediate feedback, first
to students, who get a score as soon as they finish taking the test, then to teachers,
who get a class summary of performance within 24 hours, and finally to the district,
which receives a summary of all testing within 48 hours. The reports in the MAP
package will provide valuable data about individual student achievement, class
achievement, grade and school achievement, and district achievement. These data
will inform not only programmatic decisions at the district level, but also instructional
decisions for students, parents, and teachers. For example, a detailed description of
information and skills that students are ready to learn accompanies each range of
scores for student performance. Over the course of the year, teachers will engage in
professional development in several forums—from initial training, to in-service days, to
FLEX sessions, to supervisory options—to understand and use MAP data effectively.
