Folcroft VoTech Students: Stefanie Palmore, Anthony Sabatelli and John Devine Resolve, that the Board recognize Stefanie, Anthony, and John for their participation and second place win in the Philadelphia Flower Show. Background Stefanie, Anthony, John and a former Penncrest student Howard Green, participated in this years’ Philadelphia Flower Show representing Folcroft and Penncrest High School. They took second place in the schools category with Temple University taking first place. This is the first time Folcroft students participated in the Flower Show. B. Joann Mrozoski – Fulbright Scholar Resolve, that the Board recognize Joann Mrozoski for being accepted as a participant in the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program. Background The purpose of the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program is to help promote mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through educational exchange. Teachers and administrators have the opportunity to live and work abroad by exchanging positions with educators from similar institutions in more than twenty countries. Fulbright exchange teachers exchange positions with foreign teachers for an academic year. By living and working in the cultures of their host countries, they gain an understanding and appreciation of the similarities and the differences between nations. C. For Recognition: Road-E-O Competition Background The Ninth Annual School Bus Safety Competition was held in May. Fifty participants from eight school districts from all over Delaware County participated. Two Rose Tree Media School bus drivers made the top seven places and will be going to the State Finals in June at Penn State Main Campus. Harry Gambrel and Bonnie D’Ignazio both placed. Yvonne Shaw and Charlie Hall also participated. Sharon and Richard Learn, Cheryl Sindone, Ron Jones, Phil and Kyle Quinzi were judges, and Linda Cunningham and Betty Tinsley were on the sideline rooting for the team. EXCELLENCE TODAY FOR TOMORROW SCHOOL REPORT’S – May 2007 GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The Second Grade Lily Pad celebrated National Poetry Month by having a Poet “Tea.” Mr. Dougherty, Faculty, staff members and visitors were invited to share their favorite poems, and the students shared their original work with family and friends. The students published their original work in a Poetry Anthology Booklet. Glenwood’s second grade students, parents and teachers went to the Tyler Arboretum to visit the Lenape and Butterfly exhibits, which are aligned with our Social Studies and Science curriculum. The Lenape exhibits showed the pride of the Native American tribe. The students were “transformed” into 17th Century Lenape boys and girls and learned about the foods, clothes and shelter the Lenapes used. Students were able to compare and contrast their lifestyles to those of the average Lenape child. At the Butterfly exhibits, the children had interactive lessons on the Life Cycle, migration practices, and habitat of the butterfly. The students pretended to be butterflies who dealt with the various threats in society, natural and man-made that affected the survival of the insect. The students enjoyed participating in both programs and it reinforced second grade curricular concepts. The Lily Pad completed a WebQuest to learn about the cultures of Native Americans. This Webquest, created by Mrs. Grace-Green, used children’s websites, Kidspiration, Microsoft Word and Microsoft powerpoint as teaching aides. As the students explored the various activities in this WebQuest, they studied the Native American’s beliefs, their lifestyles, how important the earth and nature were to them. The students researched tribes, and gave a powerpoint presentation, using the LCD projector acquired by an application to the Technology Department last fall. The Second Grade celebrated National Teach Children to Save day. Volunteers from Nova Savings Bank came to each class to discuss the history of money and the importance of saving money and other concepts that are aligned with our social studies economics unit. The students assembled and decorated cardboard banks so that each child could start saving for the future. The third grade visited the Franklin Institute this month. While we were there we extended our study of the Solar System in the Space Exploration room. We also extended our study of the human body in the Giant Heart room. Late in the month, we 1 also visited the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation to enrich our study of Pennsylvania. We were fascinated to learn about the daily chores of children in the 1800s. Just a note from the music room to remind you that Glenwood’s Spring Concert will be held on Monday, May 21st at 7:30 PM, in Glenwood’s cafeteria. The theme for this concert is “Music Touches Lives.” The fifth graders have prepared a variety of music, from Ragtime to Broadway. The sounds of singing, boomwhackers and handbells will fill the air. There will be an in-school concert for Glenwood students on Tuesday, May 22nd at 2:00 PM. Parents who cannot attend the evening performance are welcome to attend this afternoon assembly. I hope you will mark your calendars so you will be able to attend, what I know, will be an outstanding performance. Fifth grade AGP students from Glenwood participated in the Enviro-Challenge sponsored by Penncrest’s Envirothon teams at Ridley Creek State Park. There were 11 fifth grade teams from the school district at the contest. The students prepared by studying on their own time. Glenwood Elementary School had one team of six students on the team. The categories for the contest included Aquatics; Alternative Energy Sources; Soil; Wildlife; and Forestry. Each student was designated as an expert in one area and as a team, students answered questions at stations from each category. The Glenwood Team, The CABAJAZ, won the first place award for Alternative Energy Sources with a great deal of help from team member John McLaughlin. In May, many grade levels received newly purchased novels. The novels were well received by the students who enjoyed reading quality literature that they could discuss with their classmates. In addition, teachers were pleased with the novels because they could better differentiate reading instruction. INDIAN LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Mid April was the start of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing for students in grades 2 through 5 at Indian Lane. Similar testing was done in the fall. Using MAP tests will help us determine student’s instructional level and to measure academic growth from year to year in the areas of mathematics and reading. Following this spring testing period, parents will receive a report showing their child’s growth for the year. MAP tests are unique, computer-generated tests that adapt to each child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. And with MAP tests, we can administer shorter tests and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about student’s growth. We are excited to be in a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. Partnering to help students learn, parents and teachers can have a profoundly positive impact on the lives of our children. You can find further information on MAP testing at the following website: http://www.nwea.org/assessments/ . Our annual Spring Art show highlighted an aquatic theme. Each bulletin board featured sea creature projects each class has completed. Additionally, each class had a collection of art work throughout the building that was completed during the school year. As a pre- 2 show greeting, some fourth grade students performed a dance to “Under the Sea” in honor of the aquatic display. Our fourth and fifth grade Pennsylvania Math League participants competed in a contest designed to stimulate interest and confident in mathematics. Presented by The Math League (www.mathleague.com) Over 1 million students around the country participate in Math League contests each year. Contest problems are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level. All of the problems on each contest require no additional knowledge of mathematics beyond the grade level they test. Indian Lane designated as No Place for Hate Students in grades 3-5 celebrated the school’s designation as a No Place for Hate School, having completed a year of anti-bias and anti-bullying programs. Grades K-2 watched live on television as a representative from the Anti-Defamation League attended the ceremony and presented the school with its official designation banner. Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning, Dr. Angela Gilbert, also attended. “American” Culture Diversity Assembly Our most recent assembly was the final one in our series on diverse cultures, and is designed to tie them all together. Bruce Segal was here to perform his show called “American.” Over the last 15 years, the composition of the U.S. population has shifted dramatically. It has changed from its former ratio of 80% European descent and 20% African/Asian/Hispanic/Other to the current level of 65% European and 35% others. Mr. Segal’s program celebrates the richness of this diversity. His program has been specifically created to foster understanding and respect by exposing students to the major cultures that form the American mosaic. He emphasizes unity by defining the common ground shared by all. African Mediterranean European Russian IndoChinese Asian Native 3 IL’s First Ever Walking Club Indian Lane started its first-ever “Walking Club” in an effort to encourage our students to move their muscles and expend their energy during recess. During each recess, there will be host faculty guest walkers and “Mystery Walkers.” We’ll also be tracking the kids’ progress using “scorecards.” Prizes will be awarded as students hit 5-mile and 10-mile distances. 100 Book Challenge Our students continue to work towards the goal of 400 steps of reading by the end of the school year. Students receive 1 step for every 15 minutes of reading and some of our students have gone well beyond the 400 step goal by reading 1000 steps!!! Kindergarten Our Kindergarten finished up their unit on Seasons by visiting Tyler Arboretum for a unit on spring and the many changes that happen in Spring. First Grade We read about friends this week. It fit very nicely with our “No Place for Hate” activities led by Mrs. Palmo. In our main story The New Friend, a little boy moves from Japan to the U.S. The children who live next door realize that he is no different from them. He enjoys the same sports and shares information about his family. We read a poem entitled Friends. This followed the same acceptance theme. We focused on syllables as we snuck in some phonics work. We will be wrapping up our money unit in the middle of next week and our rain forest study continues! We have begun a flap book listing facts about the layers of the rain forest. We will learn something about the forest floor all the way up to the emergent layer. The children are very excited to make our mini-rain forests, learn about the layers and research animals from the rain forest. Our Mother’s Day Tea was a huge success in all classes by having 100% participation by all our Moms. They enjoyed heart-healthy snacks as well as special gifts each student made for their mom. We had visiting moms from our staff stop by to enjoy some treats and a good time was had by all. Second Grade This week, we will continue to work on Language Arts and phonics skills and in Reading, we will be working on a story from our Reading Book called “Brothers and Sisters” which is the first story in our Family Time Theme. In Math, we will begin working on Chapter 11: Measurement. We have started our Butterfly unit in science! Not only will we be learning about the lifecycle of the butterfly, we will see it! We will be watching our caterpillars as they emerge into beautiful butterflies. At the end of the unit, we will release the butterflies into our courtyard. 4 Third Grade Indian Lane third graders have been corresponding with their pen pals in Iraq and Afghanistan. Parents and students have shipped treats and supplies to their pen pals who are father and son. They graciously shared their packages with fellow soldiers. Our pen pals have returned home to New Jersey and plan to contact our students again – yeah! Fourth Grade Did you know that April was National Poetry Month? Throughout the month, we focused on writing poetry. We wrote feeling poems, spring poems, and I am from… poems, just to name a few. We have begun a new novel, Chocolate by Hershey. This will give us a good background on Milton Hershey and his difficult life. The timing is such that it should be fresh in our minds, as we approach our big trip in June. Our Author’s Tea will be held where the fourth grade team looks forward to showing some or our creative writing efforts. We are all gearing up for our end-of-year trip to Harrisburg. Fifth Grade Some of our students participated in Enviro Challenge. Enviro challenge is a program that integrates fifth grade and high school students in the realm of environmental science. It is an enrichment program in a competition format. The Enviro challenge is a similar endeavor in which fifth grade students from our district compete in various areas of environmental science under the direction of the Penncrest High School Envirothon team. The goals of this program include environmental enrichment for fifth grade students, a cooperative learning experience, collaboration between high school and fifth grade students and teachers, and a fun exciting outdoor experience that will hopefully spark further interest in the field of environmental studies. In 2006, over 90 fifth graders participated from two elementary schools. This year, each Indian Lane fifth grade class fielded one team. They competed along with teams from the AGP programs from each of the Rose Tree Media elementary schools. Specialists Mrs. Haskell’s third, fourth & fifth grade math students are utilizing technology by competing in a First-In-Math competition. Students access the First-In-Math website, practice math skills at their level and earn stickers. Right now, the fourth grade team is ahead of the fifth grade team! Students are motivated and loving using this competition to further their math skills. Mr. Frank and Mrs. Reuther’s physical education classes have completed the President’s Physical Fitness testing. This challenge excited students to show off their strength, agility and speed. MEDIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Law Day Mr. Goldfarb’s and Mr. Murphy’s fifth grade classes celebrated Law Day at the Delaware County Courthouse on Friday, May 4, 2007. Experiencing what it is like to sit in a criminal courtroom, having Juvenile Court Judge Kevin Kelly describe the judicial system and 5 process, and sitting in a detention cell with County Sheriff were highlights of the morning. Students participated by acting judge, jury, prosecutor, defender, defendant, and witness during a mock trial in an attempt to bring the world of law and judicial system to their understanding. Fourth Grade at the Theatre The fourth grade attended the Hedgerow Theatre during the month of April. They saw a historically fictional play called “Once Upon a River.” The actors reenacted scenes important to United States history as related to Delaware County, Pennsylvania. They were introduced to Native American tribes that traveled through Media. After returning, the fourth grade sent thank you letters and cards to the sponsors of Hedgerow Theatre for supporting the actors. Enviro-Challenge Fifth Grade AGP students from Media participated in the Enviro-Challenge sponsored by Penncrest’s Envirothon teams on Wednesday, April 25 at Ridley Creek State Park. There were 11 fifth grade teams from the school district at the contest. The students prepared by studying on their own time. Media School had three teams with five students on each team. The categories for the contest included Aquatics, Alternative Energy Sources, Soil, Wildlife, and Forestry. Each student was designated as an expert in one area and as a team, students answered questions at stations from each category. The Avatars took first place in the Soil competition, scoring the most points for that category and the Ace Jaces took second place in the Forestry competition and also took 4th place overall. Land and Water The fourth grade students in Mrs. Fitzgerald’s and Miss Dooner’s room started a new science unit called “Land and Water.” Throughout the unit, the students predict, observe, and conclude how land affects water and how water affects land. In order to do so, the children have constructed land models with which to experiment. They demonstrated the water cycle using the land model, water, an ice pack, and saran wrap. The ice pack sits on top the saran wrapped land model. The “lake” within the land model cools and condenses to form precipitation. The children also acted out the steps of the cycle in a play in which each student played a vital role showing how water is recycled on our earth. AGP at Media Elementary The third grade students are learning about space, the solar system and space exploration. The forth grade children have started on a virtual road trip across Pennsylvania where they have planned a route and are “visiting” a number of historic sites across the state while keeping a detailed travel log and journal. The fifth grade class is learning more about colonial America and the causes of the American Revolution as well as preparing for the Enviro-challenge at Penncrest High School. Three teams from Media were scheduled for the competition. National Poetry Month April was National Poetry Month and students in all grades participated in the Third Annual Poetry Café, held in the library. In preparation for this event students kept poetry journals and explored various poetic forms and literary devices both in the library and their classrooms. 6 Media Bookswap The Media PTG once again sponsored the Media Bookswap. Students this year donated a grand total of 6,048 books! Mrs. Smith’s class donated the most – 556 books – consequently, each student can bring home 23 new books to read. Each student in grades kindergarten through the fifth grade could select five books to take home and read. Vicarious Experience via Google Earth Mr. Mann’s fourth grade class visited the Southeast region of the United States using Google Earth. The class is learning about different regions of the United States in social studies. By using a computer and a projector as a class they were able to visit the different cities and areas in the Southeast region. One chapter in the text book outlined what life was like on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico and the class was able to locate the rig off the coast of Louisiana. The students enjoyed the lesson and discovered how valuable Google Earth can be and they are now anxious to use it as they travel to the other regions of the United States. East Meets West The fifth grade art classes have been comparing aesthetics of the 17th and 18th century Japanese artists with those of Europeans in the same time period. Visitors from Shofuso, the Japanese House in Fairmont Park, came to art classes to present Haiku poetry writing lessons and to prepare the students for their field trip to a Japanese Tea Ceremony. As a follow-up activity, the fifth grade students visited the Japanese House in Fairmont Park, Philadelphia where they observed a Tea Ceremony and had the opportunity to write their own Haiku poetry. Embrology All third grade classes at Media completed a unit on embryology. Students explored the life cycle of a chick. They learned about the many parts of an egg. Each class cared for eight eggs until they hatched into chicks. Launched into Space The children in third grade launched into space in their next science study dealing with the solar system. Each class visited the planetarium at Eastern College as an introduction to this exciting unit. Poetry and Writing in First Grade The first grade team at Media Elementary has been working with literacy coach, Tracey Fritch, to plan and implement a writing unit on poetry. Using ideas from a primary writing kit by Lucy Calkins and Leah Mermelstein, the teachers were able to develop a unit where the children learned to look at objects in a new way, hear the music in poetry, put big feelings in little packages, and write some creative poetry. It was a great learning experience for both the teachers and the students. Happenings in Kindergarten Dino Dan presented a program to the kindergarten children. During his visit he talked about dinosaurs and shared fossils and facts about these fascinating creatures from long 7 ago. Cinco de Mayo was celebrated by learning Spanish numbers. The children played Mexican Jumping Bean Addition and Cinco de Mayo Bingo. The classes participated in the 3rd Annual Poetry Café held in the library. They did an impressive job memorizing 2-3 lines poems. Motion and Design Mrs. Gruber’s class is involved in a unit in science entitled, “Motion and Design.” The children work in teams to build vehicles using KNEX. The students use different materials to test forces of push, pull, and drag. ROSE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Art Room Happenings Fifth grade art work was featured in the main hallway to coincide with the Spring Choral Concert. Fifth grade students also created mixed media compositions following their social studies unit which focused on the Middle Passage trip slaves took from Africa to America. Fourth grade student artists completed their accordion fold books featuring birds in their habitats, focusing on the Pennsylvania artist John James Audubon. Third grade students celebrated spring by painting large flowers in the style of Georgia O’Keefe. In keeping with the celebrations theme for their Passport to Art, second grade artists created Japanese carp windsocks, as they learned about the Children’s Day celebration in Japan. First graders learned about the Hawksbill sea turtle, an endangered species, as they created a life size, mixed media composition. Physical Education Mrs. Heiland thanks all who participated in the Jump Rope for Heart fund-raising event. The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders raised a Rose Tree record amount of $6,281.25 for the American Heart Association. For the month of May, all grades focused on teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship while preparing for Field Day. The Field Day theme this year is “Dr. Seuss” and each station will have a theme from one of the many Dr. Seuss books. Math Lab Grade 1 – Students studied place value with tens and ones, and counting by tens when you start on any given number, say ‘23’, ‘33’, ‘43’, etc. They also worked on identifying coins and counting money values using play coins and flash card pictures. The students then learned to tell time to the hour and half-hour. Grade 3 – The students continued to work on multiplication facts and the multiplication algorithm for 2 x 1 and 3 x 1 digits. They were introduced to the steps for long division and worked on simple division with 1 digit divisors and two digit dividends, remainders, and checking their work by multiplying. They also worked on basic vocabulary for the four operations. Grade 4 – The students continued to work on problem solving skills especially labeling their work and using justification words. They also worked in the world of fractions, concentrating on addition and subtraction of mixed numbers, multiplying fractions, and strengthening skills in simplification. Their division skills were “dusted off” as they reviewed division patterns and compatible numbers. Grade 5 - Fifth grade solidified addition and subtraction of mixed numbers, and worked with multiplication and division of fractions. They practiced 8 pre-simplification (crossing-out), and post-simplification skills. The students then reviewed interpreting remainders and when to estimate (vs. give exact answers). In addition, they reviewed function tables in anticipation of tackling algebraic concepts. Accelerated Math Program: Fourth Grade - Fourth grade visited the Commerce Bank in Devon to learn about check writing, debit cards, and recording transactions in a register. We wish to thank Maya and Ramona from the Media branch for their expertise and effort. Fourth graders continued reinforcing their problem solving skills, most recently practicing working backwards. They have completed measurement and are heavily into division concepts, including division patterns, compatible numbers, money, decimals, and two-digit divisors. They also learned about prime factorization and reviewed exponents. Music During the month of May, the fifth grade students prepared for their Spring Concert "Rose Tree Goes to Broadway!" The students put on a great show full of acting, singing, hand chimes, recorders, and dancing. First Grade Rose Tree Elementary’s first grade students traveled to Norristown to the Elmwood Park Zoo on Tuesday, May 8th. The students enjoyed a lesson about animal adaptations and had the opportunity to see many animals! It was a great way to integrate the first grade animal unit with a field trip! Third Grade Rose Tree Elementary’s third grade students traveled to many places during the month of May. They visited the Eastern University Planetarium and Solar Observation deck in correlation with their Solar System Unit. The students also visited the Upper Providence Township Building and Police Station to tie in with their unit on local government. While there, they participated in a mock hearing. Finally, they visited the Franklin Institute to reinforce what they learned during their magnetism and electricity unit. 9 Fifth Grade Students in grade five studied the topic of slavery in social studies. The chapter included the history of slavery in western Africa, the Middle Passage trip that slaves took from Africa, and the life of a slave once in America. Students wrote their thoughts and feelings about what they learned as part of the assessment, and many of their ideas were amazingly insightful. As an additional task, students could visit three websites that showed interactive slave auctions and a trip on the Underground Railroad. Students also studied "show way" quilts, created by slaves to help others find their way to freedom. Academically Gifted Program Students in the 3rd grade AGP class studied topics relating to the solar system. Each child chose a topic and conducted in-depth research. The students took notes and recorded their findings. Each student created a power point presentation that included facts, pictures found on web sites relating to their topic, and a hyperlink. The students presented their power points to the entire third grade in the library on the large viewing screen. Assessment: All students in grades 2 – 5 have completed the Spring Measure of Academic Progress (MAP). Each grade level will meet with the principal and other support teachers to review the data. A report will be mailed home the week of June 4th, to parents charting their child’s results. SPRINGTON LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL Springton Lake has a new sign on the building over the main entrance. On Friday April 27th, the Springton Lake Middle School girls' track and field team, led by the guidance of Coach Mark Homan and Coach Alex Tsipras, sent their 4 x 100 meter open relay to the Pennsylvania Relay Carnival held at historic Franklin Field. After numerous rain delays lasting over 2 hours, Juli Beck, Allie VanZant, Jackie Miller, and Jordan Ballew emerged from the race in 3rd place with a time of 54.31 seconds. The field was a very competitive field with teams from Bucks, Delaware, Chester, and Montgomery Counties. However, the girls were not fazed by all the intangibles, maintaining their focus and performing the task at hand. “Great job Lady Spartans" The Springton Lake Physical Education Department hosted a national adventure workshop for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) and American Alliance for Physical Activity and Recreation (AAPAR). The PE Department were the instructors for the participants that came from various counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia. The seventh grade science department is currently working on Newton's three laws of motion. This includes investigations in "Inertia Games," "Cannon Cars," and "The Shot Putt Squish." We are also preparing for Physics Day at Hershey Park which will take place in May. 10 In the sixth grade science classes, students are learning about food chains and food webs. They are working with a partner to investigate a given ecosystem (ex. Everglades National Park). With their partner, they will be creating a food web to show the organism feeding relationships within that ecosystem. They will also create a power point presentation to present to the class. In a few weeks students will be choosing an endangered animal to research. We will be using library resources and the laptop computers. They will create a poster or power point presentation to share with the class. Eighth Grade Social Studies experienced the King Tut exhibit in March. Students were well-behaved as they witnessed real artifacts from history and gained experience in learning to appreciate museums. Currently students are studying the Middle Ages. We are examining castles and some students are comparing the medieval political, social and economic structure to the power of warlords in modern Afghanistan and in some countries in Africa. Eighth grade students will be analyzing the Medieval Age through Tom Snyder's "Decisions, Decisions: Feudalism" computer simulation. Miss Bendistis's seventh grade language arts class has been writing poetry. They will be creating electronic portfolios where they will hyperlink their poems to an existing word document. They will then burn their anthologies to a CD so that they may reflect upon and share their poetry with their family and friends. As the final activity for the Author Study, an in-depth research project and presentation that all sixth-grade Language Arts students complete each spring, Mrs. McLeod’s students each wrote a letter to their chosen author. The letters included details about favorite scenes from the authors’ books, questions, and even suggestions for future characters and plotlines! So far, nineteen students have received responses from eleven different authors, five of whom have earned the prestigious Newbery Medal. The list of authors includes Jerry Spinelli, Kate DiCamillo, Christopher Paolini, Louis Sachar, R. L. Stine, Phyllis Naylor, Will Hobbs, Dan Gutman, Betsy Byars, Caroline Cooney, and Andrew Clements. The responses have included personal letters, postcards, signed bookmarks, short biographies, and many encouragements for the students to continue with their own creative writing! The Seventh Grade Chorus Spring Concert and the Eighth Grade Concert were held. The Seventh & Eighth Grade Select Chorus and the Eighth Grade Chorus attended an Adjudication at Hershey Park. Mrs. Motley and teacher, Ms. Mayernick, attended a reception at the Media-Upper Providence Library to honor local students who had won the local Bookmark Contest. Seventh grader Lauren Myers was honored for her bookmark for the middle school division. Mrs. Motley attended the Pennsylvania School Librarian’s Association Meeting in Hershey. She participated in a digital camera workshop on Thursday afternoon and in the evening, as a member of the Best of the Best book review panel, presented reviews to an audience of 150 librarians. She also attended several sessions on new technologies such as blogs, wikis, and podcasts, serving as moderator for one session. In addition, she attended a panel discussion on Pennsylvania’s Classrooms of the Future program which is providing high schools with technology and teaching coaches to move PA schools towards 21st century and Web 2.0 teaching and learning. Mrs. Motley was also 11 asked to speak to a group of teachers who are enrolled in a library certification program at Arcadia University. This is the second year that she was asked to speak about how RTM librarians followed the curriculum writing process in Rose Tree Media to create our information literacy curriculum. Following Spring Break, Mrs. Motley visited all seventh and eighth grade language arts classes to present background about our visiting author Gordon Korman and to book talk selections from his writing. Mr. Korman visited Springton Lake where he spoke at three grade-level assemblies and autographed books for students and teachers. In the afternoon, about fifty participants in our Food for Thought Café program gathered in the library for a special author reception. Korman gave a brief intro to his new book, Schooled about a boy raised on a now defunct 60s commune by his aging hippie grandmother. Participants kept Mr. Korman busy answering their questions for about thirty minutes before a perfect author visit had to come to an end! Students from Mrs. White’s and Mr. Carboni’s sixth grade classes completed the annual author study project. Students each selected an author and one of their books to read. Mrs. Motley presented resources, both print and electronic, to help each student with their assignments. Students then researched their author and discovered personal information, educational background, publications, awards, and other pertinent information. Information was shared via posters and power points and all facts were documented using proper bibliographic format. Mr. Riley’s social studies classes researched various Civil War battles and then presented either a Power Point or a travel brochure highlighting their discoveries. Seventh grade students from Ms. Bendistis’s classes chose a topic of their choice to research and then completed an oral presentation or written paper. Students were prepared for the research by a lesson on plagiarism. Mrs. Motley stressed consequences of plagiarism using the examples of Blair Hornstine and Joseph Biden and provided guidance on six simple steps for writing in one’s own words. Students practiced these steps using a passage from a book on westward expansion. Ms. Dachiu’s seventh grade L.A. students selected a poet with whom they identified and then researched their poet and created a character study. Seventh grade language arts students from Ms. Mayernick’s classes self-selected topics for research and then completed a written research paper. Students in Ms. Boettcher's pre-algebra class are learning the pythagorean theorem and are solving real-life problems using the concepts. They can also re-arrange the formula to solve for a missing side of a geometric shape and using this data, calculate the area and perimeter of the shape. Introduction to Pre-Algebra Part II students are integrating integer applications into real life situations and will be solving two-step equations. Students in Mrs. Simmington's Introduction to Pre-Algebra class recently learned how to calculate percent of a number. They learned the real-life applications of percent of a 12 number by calculating sales tax, tips, and discounts. The highlight activity of this content area was the tip situation skits that students presented. Currently, Mr. Lynch's pre-algebra students are studying the concepts of linear equations, slope, and graphs of equations. They are beginning a class project where they measure their height, wing span, wrists, forearms, feet, neck, and thumb. From here, they will use the data to plot certain measurements so as to compare them and find patterns. For example, the students will compare the foot length and forearm length. When they plot the data, their graph should reveal itself as a straight line. This line reveals that the larger your foot is, the larger your forearm is (and vice versa). The concept of slope will show the exact relationship between the data. PENNCREST HIGH SCHOOL Regional Pennsylvania Computer Fair Two Penncrest students, Angela Wolf (sophomore) and Tom Wills (junior), took 1st place in the Digital Movie category at the Regional PA Computer Fair held at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit. The students produced a five minute movie about the dangers of drug and alcohol use. These students will now advance to the state competition to be held at Dickinson College. In light of the projected needs for next year with students returning from out of district placements and students entering from early intervention, concerted efforts are being made to place students with a high degree of need with a student who already receives support from an instructional assistant. By pairing students, we anticipate the ability to be less reliant on additional adult support while still maintaining the level of support required by each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Dr. Barta will continue to be involved in the upcoming IEP meetings to assist with planning and classroom placement for students requiring additional support. Mrs. Shacklady-White indicated that she anticipated a few changes in one on one supports for the middle and high school as students move from Springton Lake to Penncrest. It is less feasible to pair students with aides at the secondary level due to the movement of students between classes and variances between student schedules.
