FOR TOMORROW
SCHOOL REPORT’S – May 2009
GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Library
Again this year, Glenwood library technician Kathy Cook offered the Little Lions Library
Club--preschool visits for four and five-year-old children. Four sessions will be held
during May and June. Preschoolers, accompanied by a parent, may come to the library
on Tuesday mornings to browse through books and select two items to check out for a
week. On the final day, the children will be able to attend the Scholastic Buy-One-GetOne-Free book fair. The Library Club is a great way for our future students to become
familiar with the library and enjoy some additional reading material.
Library technician Kathy Cook attended Follett’s Annual Spring “Book Look” workshop in
Turnersville, NJ. Available for preview were over 1,500 newly-copyrighted K-8 titles, both
fiction and nonfiction. Follett representatives were on site to streamline the process of
ordering library materials for the 2009-2010 school year. This was a great opportunity to
examine new books to be sure they meet the needs of our students and support the
curriculum. Mrs. Cook arranged for Chris Teter, fantastic new children’s librarian at
Middletown Library, to come to Glenwood and make grade-level presentations to our
students about their summer reading program, “Be Creative.” Ms. Teter discussed
family programs that include musicians, jugglers, and puppet shows; pizza and movie
nights; and arts and crafts. For fifth graders there is a special “trivia game night,”
featuring Al Capone Does My Shirts, the novel all incoming Springton Lake sixth graders
will read as part of the required summer reading program at the middle school. There
will be plenty of activities to keep kids motivated, entertained, and reading during the
summer months at the Middletown Library! Also, Mrs. Cook participated in the third
session of this year’s Delaware County Book Review Program on May 12 at Upper Darby
High School. Publishers provide copies of brand new titles, and librarians may keep
those books they review. Mrs. Cook obtained twenty-four recently-published titles for the
Glenwood library, including non-fiction, novels, and picture books valued at over $350.00!
Art
Recently, students from Glenwood Elementary, along with teachers Betsy Hennessey
and Keith Sharp, and aide, Ann Austin visited with the residents and staff at Lima Estates
Retirement Center. Together, they created flower wreaths for the doors of residents. They

traced and cut out flowers and leaves, which were then glued together to create wreaths.
At the end, students and residents reflected on their accomplishments and shared stories
while enjoying a snack of cookies and milk.
Guidance
This month in guidance we are working on cultivating positive emotion. Positive emotions
help children be open to new possibilities and enable them to be at their personal best
both personally and academically. Students do this in Guidance through compliments,
showing gratitude, and using their strengths to face both successes and hardships.
First Grade
The first graders are in the home stretch! May is a very busy month for our classes. Our
classes will enjoy several assemblies and trips throughout this month. We will visit the
inflatable dome and view a movie about the Solar System. We will also attend the Spring
Concert to watch the fifth graders perform, the Tooth assembly to learn about proper
teeth maintenance, and the play at Penncrest High School. Our classes will also continue
discussions about teamwork and community building after a trip the Ringling Brothers
circus. Field Day is another special day happening this month that will help us learn to
work together while keeping us in shape! Our classes continue to work through patterns,
addition and subtraction, and problem solving skills in math. We will also continue our
work with fluency and comprehension through reading and phonics instruction. We will
wrap up our study of animals and begin learning about Balance and Weighing in Science.
Second Grade
Glenwood's Second Grade went to the Tyler Arboretum for Native American and Butterfly
lessons, which are both part of the second grade curriculum. The students were able to
view the life of the Lenape child and experience the clothes, food and games that were a
part of their culture. This month, we also had a distance learning experience with the
Smithsonian Institute, where the students learned about Native American life through
carefully studying the paintings and using their inference and analytical skills. As a
culminating activity to Native American studies, the students had a powwow and made
crafts in the tradition representing each of the 4 North American regions that we studied.
Third Grade
In May, teachers used multiple assessments to see how much the students have grown
throughout the year in regards to language arts. One test that was administered was the
DRA. That test shows what reading level the students are on and what their specific
learning needs are. Another test is the DIBELS which measures alphabet and phonics
knowledge at the primary grades and word knowledge and oral reading fluency for grades
3 through 5.
Fourth Grade
In preparation for our field trip back in time to the 19th Century experience at the Federal
School, we read the story House, House with our visitors on Special Friends Day. This
story compared houses in the late 1800's to how they look today and we discussed
differences between then and now. The fourth grade is currently working on the
Ecosystems science unit. The seeds we planted in our terrariums have sprouted, our
aquariums are active with fish and pond snails and we are awaiting the arrival of our

crickets and pill bugs for the terrarium. The students are enjoying this exciting science
unit.
Fifth
Glenwood's fifth grade students took their annual trip to Washington, DC, and had an
opportunity to visit the remodeled Museum of American History. The students' day began
with a bus ride to the nation's capital and a guided lesson at either the Air and Space
Museum or Museum of Natural History. Students then had a chance to enjoy lunch with
their chaperones. Before boarding the buses and heading back to Glenwood, the
students spent the afternoon in the completely remodeled and recently reopened
Museum of American History. They took part in a scavenger hunt as well as some
demonstrations by museum staff. Students thoroughly enjoyed their visit.
INDIAN LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
First Grade
The First Graders had a special Mother's Day event where moms were treated to special
poems, songs, writing and goodies. Each mother left with gifts and wonderful memories.
In math, we are working on patterning, both with colors and movement. The children have
been working on patterns such as: abab, abcabc, aabaab and abbabb. We have also
been observing the many patterns found in our world. In Social Studies, we are learning
about mapping. Each child sent a Flat Stanley to a faraway, or not so faraway, friend or
relative. Each day we anxiously check our mailboxes for a Stanley to arrive. Then, we
locate his point of origin on our map!
Second Grade
Our second graders are learning about the life cycle of butterflies. They have been
observing and recording data about Painted Lady Butterfly larvae and are anxiously
awaiting for the butterflies to emerge. As a culminating activity for this unit, we will visit the
butterfly exhibit at Longwood Gardens in June.
Fourth Grade
All fourth graders participated in an excellent distance learning activity, Musical
Geography of the United States. The Cleveland Institute of Music took us on a musical
journey through all the regions of the US. Since we are studying the regions of the US
this was especially important. The culture and diversity of our nation was played and
performed for us through music. Some of the examples we heard were; music of the
Blackfoot Nation, German polka, Cajun music and European classical music too. The
students enjoyed the interaction with the students of the Cleveland Institute and getting
their musical questions answered instantaneously.
Fifth Grade
Fifth Grade is hosting Colonial Day on May 29th. The students will participate in activities
during the day all having to do with the Colonial Time Period. All 4 fifth grade classes
hosted a Mother's Day Tea. Students wrote poetry for their parents and enjoyed reading
some of the work from their writing portfolios to the Mom's at the tea.

Excellence in Teaching Award – KATIE DURANT
Kindergarten teacher Katie Durant was received the prestigious 2009 Delaware County
Excellence in Teaching Award by the Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union. The Credit
Union, in partnership with the Intermediate Unit, established the award to recognize
Delaware County’s exceptional, innovative educators. The award also raises public
awareness of the valuable contributions local teachers make to the educational system
and the strong, positive impact they have on their students. She began her career at
Media Elementary and moved to Indian Lane two years ago. Katie was nominated by
fellow teachers and parents. Katie was honored at an April 23 dinner at The Drexelbrook
and was awarded $500 and a commemorative keepsake. Indian Lane received $1,000.
Student Council
The Student Council Team, headed by three fifth grade teachers, took 20 students to the
Relay for Life Event at Penncrest High School. The students raised $1,215.00 for The
American Cancer Society. The fifth grade Student Council is hosting a car wash at Indian
Lane Elementary on Saturday, May 30, from 9 AM - 12 PM to raise money for Type I,
Juvenile Diabetes Research.
Indian Lane Staff - Relay For Life
The Staff at Indian Lane participated as a team in the recent Relay for Life at Penncrest
High School. In addition to raising more than $800 for The American Cancer Society, the
staff participated in a life-changing event that celebrated the lives of those who have
battled cancer, remembered loved ones lost, and empowered all of us to fight back
against a disease that takes too much. Fighting cancer is a team effort and Indian Lane
was proud to do their part.
Poem in Your Pocket
During the week of April 20-24, Indian Lane celebrated "Poem in Your Pocket
Week," created by the Academy of American Poets to help us celebrate April as National
Poetry Month. Poem in Your Pocket Week encourages us all to pick our most favorite
poems and carry them with us to share with our family and friends. The Academy
suggests several clever ways to take our poems along with us, including handwriting
some lines on the back of our business cards, adding a poem to our e-mail footers,
posting a poem on our blog or social networking page, and texting a poem to our friends.
Music
Indian Lane’s Fifth Grade Chorus, Bobcat Ensemble and Fifth Dimension performed their
annual Spring Concert. We are proud to say we had 100% student attendance at our
evening concert. Besides many curriculum based selections, students performed their
grade level composition entitled, “A Presidential Rap.” This was a piece written by the
students in January to honor President Obama on his historic inauguration. This music
project engaged our entire fifth grade class and incorporated national music standards as
well as Rose Tree Media School District Language Arts anchors. After recording this rap,
copies were sent to Congressman Joseph Sestak and President Barack Obama. We
hope they enjoy watching these future voters take interest in government current events.

5/28/2009
Indian Lane will once again host the Young Writers/Young Readers Summer Enrichment
Program. This summer camp is staffed by experienced teachers who are Fellows of the
National Writing Project.
The summer Youth Programs are sponsored by the
Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project (PAWLP), West Chester University (WCU),
and select school districts in the Delaware Valley. Classes are small, averaging 13-15
students and are grouped by age. Teachers are prepared to teach multi-age classes.
PAWLP, a National Writing Project site, is a professional network of teachers who
promote student achievement through quality instruction.
MEDIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Music, Music, Everywhere!
The merry month of May brought the melodious sounds of music to our ears. Media
Elementary School students performed in the band, orchestra and chorus concerts, much
to the delight of proud parents and friends. Congratulations to third grader Abby Kleiman!
– Abby’s story, “The Orphan Princess,” was selected as one of the third grade winners of
the Dr. Nicholas Spennato Young Author’s Project for 2008-2009. Abby was recognized
for her accomplishment, along with other winners throughout the county, on Friday, May
15 at Ridley High School.
Muffins and Moms Breakfast
Janice Eddy and Jennifer Matsinger, PTG parent volunteers, played hostesses to
hundreds of moms and children at the Muffins and Moms breakfast in the Media School
cafeteria. Judging by the happy faces and the empty fruit bowls and trays of pastries, a
great time was had by all!
Dome Theater
All of our students in grades K - 5 were treated to an out-of-this-world adventure
presented by Kramer Entertainment’s Dome Theater. Each class sat inside an inflatable
dome planetarium and watched a video that helped them learn more about our amazing
universe, extreme weather, or geology.
Media’s Off-Site “Walk for the Cure”
On Monday, May 4, Media School and Rose Tree School gifted support teacher Sue
Williamson, in conjunction with RTMEA, led an off-site “Walk for the Cure” for Media
School families and the RTM teachers and staff. Dozens of families and friends joined this
fifth annual 45-minute Walk through Media Borough to raise money for cancer research.
Fifth Grade Fun Night and Visitation Day at Springton Lake Middle School
Fifth grade students from all four elementary schools have had the chance to meet and
greet and enjoy lots of fun activities at the PTG-sponsored 5th Grade Fun Night and the
5th grade Visitation Day at Springton. Thank you Dr. Jeuell, and all of the Springton Lake
teachers and staff, who have already begun to help the rising 6th graders feel like a part of
the Springton Lake family.

Kindergarten
The kindergarten students have been learning about communities in Social Studies. The
children have designed a town from recycled boxes. They are planning to take a walking
trip through our Media community at the end of the month and visit some of the wonderful
places that make up our community. All children have completed our DIBELS
assessments!
Grade One
The first graders at Media have been putting their creative minds to work on poetry
writing! Beginning in April, the children were exposed to many types of poems related to
the various subjects they were learning about in class. Then they each chose a poem
and practiced their reading skills by presenting it at The Poetry Café, hosted by Mrs.
Matusow. In class, the students worked on a writing unit about poetry. During the unit
the children learned to take a big idea (a watermelon idea) and zoom into a smaller part
(a seed idea.) They also learned to look at things with a poet’s eye, listen for the “music”
of a poem, talk to the subject of a poem, and “show, don’t tell” in their poetry. The
students chose some of their favorite work to be put together in a class poetry book, and
each child was able to take home a copy.
Grade Two
Second Grade at Media Elementary held its 10th Annual Living History Museum.
Students researched historical figures that made contributions in science, the
environment, civil rights or the arts. Each student created a report, poster, costume and
oral presentation. Research was presented to parents, students and other guests and
was very well received.
Grade Three
All third grade classes have been studying embryology. A major part of this unit has been
hatching chicks. The eggs arrived in the classrooms on May 5. Since then the students
have been in charge of caring for the eggs. This includes turning the eggs every few
hours, checking to make sure the temperature in the incubator is around 100 degrees,
and making sure the appropriate amount of water is in the bottom of the incubator.
Students have been learning about the life cycle of a chick and the parts of an egg. They
waited patiently for the arrival of our chicks that hatched May 12! After the chicks hatched,
the students were in charge of caring for the babies. This included transferring the
newborn chicks to the brooder box after they hatched, and providing the chicks with fresh
food and water, a light for warmth, and of course exercises! As an extension of our social
studies unit on the history of Pennsylvania, we visited the Caleb Pusey House on Friday,
May 15. Jana Maxwell, art teacher, was our tour guide through this very important,
historic site.
Grade Four
In math, students are all working on geometry concepts, specifically volume. In Mrs.
Gruber's math class, there was a “Yard Sale” to help students review money concepts.

reading, small book groups continue. Ms. Coulter's class is involved in an author study. A
recent focus was the study of poetry and figures of speech. DRA testing is in progress, as
well as MAP testing. Nineteen of the fourth graders were members of the Reading
Olympics team that competed against other teams in the county. Media’s Reading
Olympics team won a blue ribbon for their efforts in reading a variety of books and
keeping a journal while they read. In Mrs. Gruber's class, the children are writing
autobiographies. In science, we have adopted a fifth grade unit called Ecosystems. The
children observe the eco-columns each day to note changes that occur. Soon they will be
able to witness the effects on pollution in their terrariums and aquariums. In social
studies, we continue our study of the USA regions. Research projects are in progress and
we will soon be moving on to our study of Pennsylvania, culminating with a trip to
Harrisburg. We are also wrapping up our Passport to History program with a trunk show
from the Delaware County Historical Society.
Grade Five
This month, students in Mrs. Loveland-Smith’s and Mr. Goldfarb’s classes had poetry
publishing parties which were the culmination of several weeks of reading mentor texts,
exploring various styles of poetry, and writing various styles of poetry. Mrs. McGeehan’s
class continued their partnership with students at Media Friends. The students have been
working together learning about how to resolve conflict. All fifth grade students went to
the Shofuso Tea House in Fairmount Park to further their understanding of Japanese
culture (which has been studied in art class throughout the school year).
AGP (Gifted Support) – Gr. 1 - 5
Fifth grade AGP students participated in the Enviro-Challenge at Ridley Creek State Park
on Wed. April 29th. The Penncrest Enviro-Thon Team runs this environmental education
competition each year the day after their big meet. Students studies at home on their own
time to prepare for the competition in which students answered a number of questions on
an environmental topic. Media School had two teams, the Filberts and the Media Blue
Jays. Eleven fifth grade teams participated from all four elementary schools. The Media
teams took a number of prizes including a 1st prize in Aquatics for the Media Blue Jays
and 4th place overall, and 3rd place overall for the Media Filberts Team, who also won 2nd
place in Aquatics, Alternative Energy, Forestry, and Wildlife. Fourth grade students are
completing a virtual road trip through Pennsylvania while touring and documenting their
travels on the Historic Trails of our state. Students are completing a PowerPoint
travelogue which will be presented to classmates and families in a few weeks. Third
grade students are finalizing plans to teach the rest of their classmates about space
exploration advancements. They have completed extensive research and are preparing a
project for their presentations.
Music
Media Elementary presented the Spring Choral concert. It featured the fifth grade
students and our Mustang Chorale. The fifth grade selections focused primarily on songs
drawn for curriculum themes and included the spiritual “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel,”
“Consider Yourself” from the musical Oliver!, and a patriotic tribute called “A is for
America.” A chorale favorite was a selection entitled “Little Firefly” which was the most
challenging piece of choral music the group worked on this year. Insects are everywhere

– but no need to call the exterminator! This month grade one students are singing about
bugs and all their wonder. Fleas, flies, bees, caterpillars – none are left out. Did you
know Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee” comes from an opera? Ask any first
grader the story. Grade three will complete their study of Camille Saint-Saens’ “Carnival
of the Animals.” This is an enjoyable exploration of the genre of symphonic poems….
orchestra music which tells a story. They also continue to progress on recorder and will
add the pitched high “C” and high “D” in the next few weeks.
Library
Our 6th Annual Poetry Café was held in the Library during Media’s “Poem In Your Pocket”
week. Students, in Kindergarten- Grade 5 shared original poems as well as favorite
poems. Many teachers and parents shared as well. Dr. Gilbert attended and shared a
favorite Langston Hughes poem. Another annual rite of spring is Media School’s “Book
Swap.” Mrs. McGeehan’s class donated the most books and therefore these students
were able to select 24 books to take home. Our Library received the books we were
awarded from the “We the People Bookshelf” grant. This grant is sponsored by the
National Endowment for the Humanities, in cooperation with the American Library
Association.
These multicultural books will enrich our history, biography and fiction
collections.
Physical Education
Students in grades 3 - 5 have completed spring physical fitness testing. All students in
grades 1 - 5 are now enthusiastically preparing for our "All Star Field Day" to take place
on May 29th on Barrall Field.
Art
Fifth grade students at Media School have been creating scrolls in the Japanese style in
conjunction with the “East Meets West” program. They were first inspired by the moonlit
paintings of Hiroshi Senju. At a reception in tribute to the artist, Mrs. Maxwell was able to
show him the scrolls that his art inspired our students to make. Sitting on the tatami mats,
surrounded by his murals, we re-affirmed the message of peace and the importance of
connecting with nature through art. He was honored by the students’ responses to his
work.
ROSE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Relay for Life
For our first year participating in the Relay for Life, we did an excellent job! Our Rose
Tree Elementary Teams earned $1,421 and our Sarahnity Now team earned another
$1,828 making our combined total $3,249, We also raised over $300 for luminaries which
we created to honor and remember special loved ones from our community. Those who
participated in the walk had a wonder-filled time. Thanks to all who helped to make the
event so successful.
Arcadia Rose Tree Inclusion Team
We have almost completed our first year of this initiative. Rose Tree team members have
visited several schools to observe various models of inclusion and have spent time

discussing the possibilities for our school. As a result we developed numerous pilot
programs this year and will continue our efforts next year. We have an average of 34 coteaching opportunities occurring each day at Rose Tree. Through these efforts we have
modified our culture into one that believes that each of us is responsible for the success
of all of our students.
First Grade
First grade had an amazing month. They were busy working on their weather unit in
science. They also prepared power points with their fourth grade partners on the animal
topic of their choice. Research was completed and the actual project is accessible on-line.
Several students reached the 400 level in 100 Book Challenge. The support for the
Hermit Crab booth at the Strawberry Festival with student volunteers was wonderful! We
had over twenty children participate and many more enjoyed the festivities!
Second Grade
Second graders at Rose Tree Elementary completed research on Native Americans. This
research integrated the history of our country's first inhabitants with geography skills
(examining a map of the regions of the U.S.), reading (nonfiction and legends),
informational writing, conducting and presenting research, and technology
(videoconference and guided Internet research).
Fifth Grade
The fifth grade students recently took a walking tour of Historic Philadelphia. They
received a guided tour of Independence Hall and other historic places. This coincides
with the social studies units on Colonial and Early America. The trip was also a
reinforcement of information for the Colonial Day presentations. Students researched
and studied various Colonial craftsmen, famous Americans, or the Constitutional
Convention. The students presented the information they gathered to parents and other
classes as a culminating activity.
Jump Rope for Heart
Rose Tree students focused on jump rope skills. Grades 3-5 participated in Jump Rope
for Heart. This year we raised over $2,480.00 for the American Heart Association. All
grades focused on teamwork and sportsmanship while playing a variety of games that
involved fitness. Grades 3-5 participated in the Presidential Fitness Testing which
involved curl-ups, push-ups, sit and reach, pull-ups or the flexed arm hang, and the ½
mile jog.
Music Happenings & Concerts
During the month of May, the RTE Spring Concert entitled "From Sea To Shining Sea"
featured the Fifth Grade Chorus, Choraliers, Recorder ensemble and Handbell Choir.
The Children performed wonderfully both in the morning and evening concert. The
Choruses also performed beautifully for the residents at White Horse Village. The Fifth
Grade Handbell choir performed here at RTE for a luncheon given for the volunteers at
White Horse Village. The honored guest even sang some familiar songs as the ringers
led on their handbells. Third grader students put on a Recorder Concert for their parents
and students to showcase how well they learned to play recorders this year. The Fifth

work completed throughout the year was on display. The honor strings students
performed and there will light refreshments available.
Mrs. Going’s eighth graders are bulldozing through their ceramic figure unit. The
excitement in the room is electrifying!! From animals in tuxedos to sports figures and
cartoon characters, to some amazing women in gowns fit for a Queen, you'll see them all
very soon. Students are still continuing to blog and share their Road Blocks that they
encountered and their success'. Many students write that this is the toughest assignment
since attending Springton, but so worth it in the end!! Hats off to her eighth grade
students. Seventh graders are experiencing Spring! A still life overflowing with (almost)
fresh (looking flowers graces the room. Time for back-to-basics!! Looking past the
surface, past the obvious is an acquired skill. Oh how they are tackling drawing skills and
now time for the explosion of color. Sixth graders are anxiously glazing and painting their
ceramic Zuni Fetish sculptures. The enthusiasm is contagious!! They have LOVED
working with clay. Sixth graders have now started to blog, as well!! They love it! Mrs.
Going has not only had the questions answered very carefully and thoroughly, but
students are sending hellos to her and communicating via the computer to her as well.

Girls’ Leadership Conference
Grace Hill and Sarah Lippman, 7th grade students at Springton Lake attended a Girls
Leadership Conference at Radnor Middle School. The Keynote speaker, Wendy
Kauffman shared the story of her evolution from Wharton Graduate to Director of WHYY.
She encouraged the girls to take time to listen to their inner voice and to be open to new
and challenging opportunities. Small breakout sessions with other area middle school
girls were facilitated by local female leaders from The Women's Resource Center in
Wayne, PA. The morning was both fun and inspirational!
Library
Mrs. Motley attended the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association Conference at
Penn State. While there she presented a session entitled Get Real: Strategies and
Assessments to Help Students Master 21st Century Information Standards that focused
on critical thinking, creativity and communication. She also presented as a panel member
for the Best of the Best Books. This group reviews books for kindergarten through eighth
grade that have been recognized with at least two superior reviews or awards during the

previous year. In addition to attending numerous other workshops that included a session
with Catherine Murdock, author of Dairy Queen, and Think Wiki: Creative Ideas for
Librarians, Mrs. Motley attended a half-day train the trainer session for a workshop
entitled, Assessment Product: The Why, What and How, that she will be presenting for
PDE this year.
Visiting author, Will Hobbs, presented to all three grade levels. Using a slide show that
demonstrated his action research on the Colorado River, Mexico, Alaska, and
Canyonlands National Park in Utah to name but a few places, Mr. Hobbs took the
audience on a journey through the rough and rugged terrain in which many of his novels
are set. His tales of hiking, fishing, and riding the river rapids had students and staff
enthralled. Mr. Hobbs also autographed books, lunched with staff members, and was
feted at a reception of “big fans” when students had an opportunity to ask questions about
his craft or specific titles which they had read.
After many months of planning, Springton Lake celebrated Poem in Your Pocket Week
from April 20-25, as did all district schools. Each day began and ended with a staff
member sharing one of their poems at the morning and afternoon announcements.
Readers included Mrs. Motley, Mrs. Knipel, Mr. Norris, Mrs. Dorothee Diaz, Mrs. Stern,
Dr. Quinn, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Jackowski, Mr. Reese, and Dr. Jeuell. Many teachers
throughout the building – from phys. ed. to science -- encouraged students to share their
poems. French students learned to do a choral reading of a French poem in Mrs.
Hensley’s classes, while students from Mrs. D. Diaz’s classes were filmed sharing theirs
with extra credit to those reading in French! Spanish students of Mrs. J. Diaz and Ms.
Kutney wrote and illustrated Spanish diamante poems about endangered animals.
Students who shared poems with any of the library staff were entered into a drawing for
prizes that included movie tickets, books by Will Hobbs, Cole Hamels Read posters, and
a Championship Phillies T-Shirt. Hundreds of entries had accumulated by the drawing on
Friday afternoon. The week culminated with poet and author, J.C. Todd presenting first at
a writing workshop for the Media Fellowship House and then reading and hosting an open
mike for students and community members at the Mansion Parlor Room at Media
Borough Hall. Many Media businesses offered discounts, incentives, or daily specials
when students shared a poem at their establishment. Participating businesses posted a
"pocket" in the window and additional businesses actually called because they too wanted
to participate. Students reported having a wonderful time going down State Street with
their poems. Some got to read their poems aloud over the PA system in Trader Joe’s,
some got free fortune cookies, bakery treats, drinks, pens, and candies. The library staff
was thrilled with the response from the community and will definitely look forward to
extending and expanding the program next year.
After reading The Pearl, Mr. Harp’s eighth grade language arts students researched
exploitation: social, economic, natural resources or indigenous peoples. Using at least
two journal articles on their topic, students synthesized their findings and then presented
them to the class. Seventh grade social studies teachers Mr. Reilly and Ms. Gaebler had
their classes research famous battles of the Civil War. Students then prepared a fiveminute PowerPoint presentation detailing the location, participants, generals, casualties,
description of the battle and its outcome as well as other interesting facts. Mr. DeLeo’s
seventh grade social studies classes researched westward expansion in pre-Civil War

America. Students could select their product which could be a travel trunk of at least ten
items with a written explanation of how they were used, a PowerPoint with twelve slides,
a narrative journal, or a research report of three to five pages. Mrs. Schied’s sixth grade
science classes researched an endangered species and then presented a PowerPoint
which detailed the characteristics of the animal and reasons the animal is endangered.
Math
Eighth graders enrolled in “Pre-Algebra” classes and an “Introduction to Pre-Algebra”
class explored the slope-intercept form through an interactive power-point created by
teacher Lawrence Twiss at a district staff development session. As the students
progressed through the power point, on the school’s laptops, they connected the links
providing video tutorials, graphing exercises and a game (which proved to be the most
popular link). The slope-intercept form expresses a linear function. Work with linear
functions falls within the state standards for algebraic concepts. Our seventh grade
CMP2 classes just completed a unit called Accentuate the Negative which deals with
rational numbers, specifically integers. We applied the four operations throughout the unit
and ended with some continued practice using the order of operations. Our next unit,
Moving Straight Ahead, picks up where Variables and Patterns left off with our study of
tables, graphs, and equations. We are going to be working on linear situations. Sixth
grade math students have been studying fraction operations. They first focused on the
importance of using estimation to make sure their sums and differences are reasonable.
They are now practicing adding and subtracting fractions in the context of real world
problems. The sixth grade accelerated math students are studying linear relationships in
tables, graphs and equations. Students began this unit of study by calculating their
walking rates. Students have been solving problems about walkathons. This is the perfect
time to be studying walkathons because there are so many opportunities to participate in
walkathons throughout our area.
Science
Seventh grade science department is preparing for its annual trip to Hershey Park to
study the physics of roller coasters. This investigation includes the study of gravity,
energy transfers, Newton's three laws of motion, and many other topics that were
discussed in class. Eighth graders are working on a toxicology unit in our science
classes. Students have been looking at how chemicals affect our environment, and more
specifically, living organisms such as ourselves. We have discussed various case studies
that explore various methods of exposure to chemicals, and have recently been exploring
the effect a chemical has on the germination of radish seeds at various concentrations.
We also have looked at dose-response curves, and will be investigating how caffeine has
an effect on heart rate in humans, by testing ourselves!

Delaware County Community College Trustees Reappointments

The terms of four DCCC Trustees expires as of June 30, 2009. All four –
James P. Gaffney, Neilda E. Mott, Michael Ranck, and Raymond G. Toto, have
requested reappointment to new six-year terms. According to the sponsoring
agreement, the responsibility for selecting/reappointing the College’s Trustees
lies with the sponsoring school districts. The established procedures charge
the Liaison Committee with reviewing requests for reappointments, and then
making its recommendations to the sponsoring directors. Approval requires an
affirmative majority vote of the ninety-nine sponsoring school districts. At a
meeting held on March 25, 2009, the Liaison Committee reviewed the
reappointment requests from the Trustees identified above and in consideration
of their service and good standing on the Board, recommended unanimously
that they be approved for new six-year terms.

Update on World Language Trips
Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Riviere, and Miss Beaudry updated the Board on completed and
planned trips sponsored by the World Language Department. Miss Beaudry presented a
PowerPoint on the recent trip by Penncrest Spanish students to Costa Rica, where they
learned about nature and the environment, as well as art, architecture, and government.
Mrs. Riviere showed a DVD documenting this year’s French exchange program, with
special emphasis on the recent visit by Penncrest students to the south of France, where
they reunited with their French brothers and sisters, who had spent two weeks in Media
last fall. Mrs. Jackson also thanked the Board for supporting the first Latin trip, which will
involve tours of Italy and Greece in early July, with Penncrest Latin teacher Enoch
Stevenson as the leader. Each presenter stressed the strong ties to the taught
curriculum—both in World Language and other subjects, such as Humanities and
European History—provided by these trips. Students testified on the DVD about the
opportunity to travel with classmates as “the experience of a lifetime.” The teachers
thanked the Board for its support of the World Language program in general and the
opportunities for foreign travel in particular.
Process and Plans for Stimulus Funding
Dr. Taylor reviewed the process and plans for using stimulus funds coming to RTMSD
via the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), an amount currently at
$1,158,096. The funding is actually coming in five separate streams: Basic Education
Funding ($53,096), State Fiscal Stabilization Funds ($124,600), additional IDEA funds
($769,200), Title II-D funds for technology ($4,500), and additional Title I funds
($206,700). Dr. Taylor explained the permitted expenditures under each category. To
offset expected tax increases in 2009-2010, the district is able to use 100% of the funds
from the Basic Education Funding and State Fiscal Stabilization Funds, and 50% of the
additional IDEA funds. Approximately $560,000 remain in stimulus money to be spent
over the next two years in the categories of IDEA funds and Title I funds. Dr. Taylor
described the process of determining how to spend these funds, a process which began
with a needs assessment compiling suggestions from Cabinet members, principals, and
teachers from all RTMSD schools. Cabinet members and principals prioritized those
suggestions at an administrative retreat last week, and the resulting list of priorities was
shared with the Board. Further prioritizing and planning will take place prior to the
submission of applications over the next few weeks. Stimulus funds are required to
support the goals of the Strategic Plan and promote learning for the lowest-achieving
students.
Special Education Update
Dr. Barta and Dr. Gilbert reported on the accomplishments and challenges of the Special
Education Department for 2008-2009, our transition year. Successes include the district
wide involvement in the Arcadia Inclusion Institute. Six school teams and a central office
team developed and implemented action plans for creating more inclusive learning
environments for all students, including students with IEPs. There has been an increase
in collaborative teaching at the elementary schools and co-teaching at the middle and
high schools. More special needs students are receiving their instruction in general
education settings allowing them to benefit from the regular curriculum with specially
designed instruction to meet their learning needs. During this transition year, students
have been educated, teachers have the supplies and materials needed to do their work,
the district is in compliance, there have been no due process complaints filed and RTM
had a successful follow up to the audit conducted last year. While there are still many
challenges that need to be addressed, Dr. Barta and Dr. Gilbert reported on a viable
special education program for RTM students. The most pressing need is the need for
additional personnel to manage the responsibilities of a K- 12 special education
department. When asked by Jeff Pettit to be more specific, Dr. Barta and Dr. Gilbert
noted that a full time position of Teacher Leader would be a place to start. Currently,
that position is only half time (.5).
Special Education Contract – ESY
Dr. Gilbert reported that ESY contracts will be arriving for the eligible students, in
accordance with their IEPs. There was a discussion about the best way to present these
contracts for approval given the number expected over the next several weeks. There
are fifty six (56) known contracts from sixteen (16) different providers that will need to be
approved. It was decided that the best way to proceed was to provide a summary of
these contracts rather than present them one at a time. Dr. Gilbert shared this summary
entitled Extended School Year Information: Summer 2009. The document included the
names and locations of the providers, the dates of service and the costs of the programs.
It was agreed that the contracts would be presented for approval at Legislative meetings
as they are received by Dr. Gilbert.

Overview of results from Net Day Speak Up Survey 2008
Patti Linden presented the results of the Net Day Speak Up Survey that was available
during the fall of this school year. This survey was posted on the RTM web pages of the
district and each school building and was sent out as a link to all administrators,
parents, and teachers. This national survey is an annual research project sponsored by
Project Tomorrow in an effort to collect unfiltered feedback from students, parents,
teachers and administrators on key educational issues related to instructional
technology and science instruction. RTM’s participation included 199 students, 265
parents, 101 teachers, and 8 administrators. The presentation included the results from
the parents and teachers. From the data, 98% of the responding parents have high
speed Internet access at home, 95% of them consider themselves to be average or
advanced users of technology, and 71% believe that technology implementation in
instruction is important. A high percentage of parents believe that important 21st Century
skills should include the ability to organize information, prepare written or verbal
research reports, ability to conduct research, ability to evaluate relevance, authenticity,
and credibility of resources, and the ability to identify information sources. 65% of them
believe that the best way for students to acquire these skills is by using all kinds of
technology as part of the school day as opposed to 17% wanting students to acquire
these skills through a special class. Interactive whiteboards for classrooms are
recommended by 43% of the parents, and 33% of them recommend computer
projection devices. Of the respondents, 78% have college and graduate level education.
For the teacher survey results, a very high percentage believed the same as parents
about the important skills for 21st Century learning. Most of the responding teachers,
about 74% of them, though, currently use test prep software as the main technology
resource in the classroom. 70% of the responding teachers believe that effective
implementation of technology is very important and that the district should use
technology tools to create professional learning communities. The conclusions that this
survey helped to identify are that the parents are well versed in technology and the
needs for their children’s education and that we need to focus more on professional
development for teachers to assist them in using technology resources effectively.

Background
This proposal was presented at the March Teaching and

ESY Contracts (continued)
Background
Dr. Gilbert reported at the April Teaching and Learning Committee
meeting that ESY contracts will be arriving for more than seventy
five (75) eligible students, in accordance with their IEPs. There
was a discussion about the best way to present these contracts for
approval given the number expected over the next several weeks.
There are fifty six (56) known contracts (some represent multiple
students) from sixteen (16) different providers that will need to be
approved. It was decided that the best way to proceed was to
provide a summary of these contracts rather than present them one
at a time. Specific contracts are to be presented for approval at
Legislative meetings as they are received by Dr. Gilbert.
Resolve, that the Board approve contracts for ESY services
for students with IEPs as follows:
Extended School Year 2009 for two students (GC, DR)
currently enrolled at Devereux. The agreements are for the
periods of 6/22/09 to 8/20/09. Services will include education
