TODAY
FOR TOMORROW
SCHOOL REPORT’S – January 2010
GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
In January, students in grades 2 through 5 explored poetry. They each wrote many
poems, but had to choose just one that they wanted to enter into the Young Poets of
Delaware County Poetry Competition. Two winners from each grade level were chosen
to be recognized at the school level, but all poems were submitted to Middletown
Library for their contest. The Glenwood winners were publicly announced and their
poems were made into a book that will be kept in the school library.
Second Grade
The second graders at Glenwood spent a morning celebrating the Super Bowl in a fun
fashion! We had our annual Cereal Bowl where the students rotated to different learning
centers. Each center was led by a parent volunteer and created by the second grade
teachers. The students used different multiple intelligences to complete the academic
tasks in a fun way!
Fourth Grade
In science, via the Motion and Design science unit, Mr. Dieter's students are working
and thinking as engineers. Throughout the month, they will be putting their newly found
knowledge of design and physics to the test. The students will be challenged to solve
several engineering problems as they try to create the fastest moving car or a lunar
vehicle that can travel over rough terrain. In Mrs. Barry and Mrs. Gallagher's classes,
students will explore the world of the microscopic. Via magnifying glasses and
microscopes, students will come to a deeper understanding of how magnification works
and its importance in the world of science and medicine. In social studies, Mr. Dieter's
class will be studying the importance of Pennsylvania in U. S. History. Mrs. Barry and
Mrs. Gallagher will continue to explore the regions of the U.S.
Fifth Grade
Glenwood's Junior Optimist Club devoted their lunch times to helping the less fortunate
in Haiti. The "Help for Haiti" effort involved students from all grade levels donating their
spare change during their lunch periods. The fourth and fifth grade students in the
Optimist Club collected the donations and sent the entire amount to the American Red
Cross to assist children in Haiti who have been suffering since the earthquake earlier in
January.

Art
Fifth graders at Glenwood Elementary participated in Art Club. This after school club
was open to all fifth grade students. It met every Thursday afternoon in January and
February. Arts Educator, Mr. Sharp, sponsored the club. Students worked on a wide
range of projects, including: clay vases, bookmaking using paste paper to create a
special book called a flag book, and Origami Boxes made from Sumigashi Paper or
Japanese Marbleized Paper.
Guidance
This month in guidance we are working on becoming more advanced listeners and
learning how to appropriately deal with someone distracting you. Students take turns
roll playing positive sentences to use with peers to foster friendships while still being
advocates for their education.
INDIAN LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten News
Kindergarten students at Indian Lane have been busy graphing! This month, they have
graphed their favorite winter activity and birthday months. Through these graphing
activities, kindergarten students learn to use math vocabulary: most, least, more than,
less than, equal to, etc. All graphs are displayed in the kindergarten hallway; come
take a look!
First Grade News
The first grade was busy in December! In social studies, we learned about winter
holiday customs around the world. We read stories for each and created a craft and/or
played a game related to the holiday. Some of the holidays we explored were
Christmas, Hanukkah, customs in both China and Mexico, and the celebration of
Kwanzaa. The children also baked cookies for a first grade cookie exchange. On the
last day before Winter Break, the children visited Fair Acres where they entertained the
residents with songs and games.
In January, in addition to trying to stay warm, the first grade is learning all about Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. and his special accomplishments. The children will be reflecting
upon his famous speech as they create their own dreams for a better world. In math, we
are learning about solving addition and subtraction story problems. This includes the
important steps of understanding the problem and showing how you solved it.
Third Grade News
After reading the story Mulan, the third grade classes visited Da Shin Restaurant. The
students enjoyed learning about Chinese customs, culture, language and manners in
conjunction with their literature unit.
We practiced using chop sticks.
We learned Chinese words like 'please' and 'thank you' before our Wonton soup arrived.
The main course was beef sticks, fried rice, crispy chicken dumplings, egg rolls and
jasmine tea...YUM! What a great trip!

Fourth Grade News
Mrs. Haskell’s class had a wonderful time sharing her special holiday tradition to crush
candy canes. She has been doing this with her own children, and her students for over
20 years. Unwrap candy canes, place in a Ziplock bag, then crush with a hammer.
Pour the bits into a container, then sprinkle over vanilla ice cream. They are delicious,
crunchy and festive, too. We shared this tradition with our Barton's Buds and made a
candy cane reindeer craft as well! Jonah's mom came and explained to us the customs
of Hanukkah. She read a fabulous book Hanukkah at Valley Forge a true story about
George Washington’s winter at Valley Forge. We then played dreidel and had a
wonderful afternoon of learning and fun.
Fifth Grade News
Fifth graders have been making felt flags to decorate the cafeteria for next week's
Geography Bee. The flags represent 80 member countries of the United Nations from
all over the world.
Music News
Indian Lane students had an opportunity to perform for each other at our annual Holiday
All-School Music Assembly. It was unique to see all students, no matter what age, be
able to share their musical talents with the rest of the school in a concert setting. Our
successful concert was received by a standing-room-only audience!
Morning of Giving
Students, teachers, and parent volunteers spent the morning of December 23rd giving
back to our community. Our first and second graders headed to Fair Acres to sing
holiday songs they learned in their music classes and entertained the residents with
some holiday humor. Our third graders also visited Fair Acres to play Bingo with the
residents. Our fourth and fifth grade students remained back at school where they
performed in a concert for just over 100 guests from Elwyn, Don Guanella, Divine
Providence, and The Residence at Glen Riddle. This experience opened our eyes to
the needs of others, especially during the holiday season.
"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
~Winston Churchill~
January Pride Assembly
Each month the entire school gathers in the cafeteria to celebrate the recent
accomplishments of all students in grades 1 thru 5. Accomplishments such as reaching
their monthly 100 Book Challenge goal, recognitions for exceptional lunchroom behavior
and special awards for efforts in gym class were recognized this month. Our Bobcat
Citizens of the month are also asked to stand up and be recognized by their peers.
Caring and Sharing
The staff of Indian Lane, under the direction of teacher Ron Frank (a.k.a. Cookie Man)
held a holiday cookie exchange. This was held before the start of school on the last
Friday before break. The staff enjoyed bringing in their favorite cookies and going home

with a variety of other cookies. There were enough leftover cookies to make several
tins for our less fortunate neighbors and shut-ins.
The Giving Tree
Once again this year our Indian Lane community rallied together to purchase and wrap
holiday gifts for some deserving families. Our Giving Tree was decorated with stars
indicating the item to purchase and it didn’t take long for the stars to disappear. We are
always blown away by what we are able to put together for our families, and this year
was certainly no exception! A special thank you goes out to all those who participated.
Parenting Partners
In conjunction with Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI), Indian Lane, once again,
hosted the first of several HCI Parenting Partners workshops designed to increase
parenting skills, build parental strengths and involve parents in their children’s academic
success. A team of trained facilitators assist parents in building practical parenting skills
and engages parents in positive leadership. Research has shown that the better
equipped a parent is with effective parenting skills with elementary age students, the
more prepared and effective they will be with parenting their teenagers and dealing with
the emotional issues of that age.
Student Council
Student Council representatives hosted the first of many Spirit Days by hosting a
College Day. Students were encouraged to wear clothing to represent their favorite
college and participants were asked to donate $1.00 to participate. A significant amount
of money was raised to benefit the S.P.C.A.
MEDIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Music…Music…Music
The efforts of our music department are typically showcased during the holiday season.
Our Mustang Chorale, under the direction of Jeanette Verdeur, performed, along with
students from Indian Lane, on the Media Court House steps. It was really cold, but the
children’s voices made us feel cozy! It was a “holiday fantasy” evening with the children
singing as horse drawn carriage rides departed from the same area. The chorale
returned to the court house for a daytime performance indoors that was equally well
received. Media School’s Winter Concert was held on December 15. All fifth graders
participated as did fourth grade members of The Mustang Chorale. The concert
featured a two handed piano accompaniment played by Patrick Murphy and Mary Dana
Dotts (talented members of our Media staff). We had a full house at the evening
performance.
Kudos to Mr. Bugosh, Mr. Boyle, and Mr. Walls for an excellent winter concert (band
and orchestra). Our upper grade students went to Penncrest High School to enjoy the
daytime performance. Mr. Walls and his string players also played at The Granite Run
Mall. Kudos and thanks to the Penncrest High School Music Department for hosting our

younger students for an inspiring holiday concert. It is wonderful to see that so many
students are involved in music at our high school. Our final musical event before taking
a respite over winter break was an all-school sing-a-long. Every grade level performed
a holiday song. The staff, performing the final song, “Let it Snow,” brought down the
house.
National Geographic Geography Bee
Our final round of the National Geographic Geography Bee was held this week. Josh
Troilo was our winner and Jacob Santangelo was the runner–up. Josh will move on to a
statewide test. The moderator, Mrs. Kotch, and the spectators all agreed that the
questions were particularly challenging. The event was organized by grade 5 teacher,
Aaron Goldfarb.
New Optimist Club
Media School’s Optimist Club held its first meeting. Present were Dr. Steve Taylor
(Optimist member, club advisor), Douglas Williamson (community advisor) and Jackie
Matusow (club sponsor). Optimist Clubs are dedicated to “bringing out the best in kids”
to do their part through community service. Media has a very active Optimist Club who
want to inspire young boys and girls to participate. Our ten members will shortly begin
their first project, “Pennies for Peace” campaign, a program of The Central Asia
Institute, founded by Greg Mortensen and based on his book, Three Cups of Tea. The
students participated in a discussion about the importance of education after viewing a
video that introduced them to children who live in the remote regions of Pakistan and
Afghanistan. The pennies the students collect will be donated to the “Pennies for
Peace” campaign that helps build schools in underdeveloped countries. This worthy
project meets the primary goal of Optimist International.
Art Goes to School
Each year the wonderful volunteers from Art Goes to School bring their portfolio to
share with us. Each class has a session where they look at and discuss famous works
of art. The volunteers know so much and are able to make these presentations really
interesting and fun. We appreciate their time and dedication.
Portrait Gallery
Our grade two students dispersed around the school to create portraits of our staff
members. The portraits are now hanging on the second floor. They are absolutely
delightful! Stop by and check them out - the range from whimsical to serious to realistic
is fabulous.
Student Plays at Sixers Game
One of our students, Joshus Mason (grade 4) performed at a Sixers game this month.
Josh plays the steel drums and has performed throughout the Philadelphia area.
PTG Events
Our PTG, assisted by music teacher Jeanette Verdeur, sponsored a trip to The Media
Theatre to see The Wizard of Oz. One of our students, Kenyon Wicks, was a munchkin.

Despite it being the week-end of the “big snow,” the attendance was great. So was the
show. Buddy Night, a game and fun night planned by several of our dads, was very
popular. The event featured sports in the gym (indoor soccer and beach volleyball),
crafts in The Parent Resource Center, and board games and snacks in the cafeteria.
Final Harassment Lesson
Mr. Murphy and Mrs. Kotch are in the process of delivering the final lesson in a series of
lessons about harassment. This year, Mr. Murphy created a section on cyber bullying.
Our technology committee also created a brochure for parents on the appropriate use of
technology for elementary age children. Our message is that we want the children to
use the available technology, but we also want them to be appropriately supervised and
guided as they do so.
Autism Workshop
Guidance counselor, Patrick Murphy, attended a workshop presented by Rebecca
Moyes on “Practical Strategies for Teaching Social Skills for Children with High
Functioning Aspergers/Autism Syndrome.” Participants were encouraged to incorporate
multi-sensory teaching techniques to help children with ASD be more successful
learners. One concept repeated over the day was that educators must determine if a
child is displaying inappropriate behaviors because he/she is non-compliant or because
he/she lacks the appropriate behavior skills. Each participant in the workshop received
a detailed resource book.
RSVP Tutors
The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is in full swing at Media Elementary. Our
six enthusiastic volunteers read with students from ten different classes. We are also
part of the RSVP Pen Pal Program. Each of the students in Mrs. Gruber’s fourth grade
class is paired with a senior volunteer. Throughout the year, the students and senior
volunteers write letters to each other. At the end of the year, there will be a small party
for the pen pals to meet. Mrs. Gruber was recognized in the RSVP newsletter; “Special
thanks to Sandy Gruber and her fourth graders at Media Elementary for their
enthusiasm and willingness to encourage students to connect wit the older adults in our
community in an educational and fun way!” Carol Mitchell (reading) coordinates RSVP
at Media Elementary.
Mr. Ament Presents
Speech and Language Therapist, George Ament, was invited to speak at Temple
University. He met with members of the Temple University branch of The National
Student Speech and Language Hearing Association and shared his experience of
working in public schools.
Music Theory and the Smartboard
One challenge music teachers face after delivery of instructions is retention of
information. Many of us do not “practice” music every day and even when we do, we
may be slow to make the connection between classroom music and applied music.
Though theory has always been a strong part of our program, it has been catapulted
School Reports
6
1/28/2009
into the forefront by the use of SMARTBoard technology. We are able to drill and
practice music theory facts in a quick and exciting fashion in every music class. Music
teacher, Jeanette Verdeur, reports that she allows 8-10 minutes per class and usually
every student gets a chance at the SMARTBoard. Her professional goal is to pre and
post test in order to measure retention.
Curriculum Related Field Trips
Third graders took a walking trip to Trader Joe’s as part of an economics unit on supply
and demand. They learned about where different foods originate and how demand for
certain products affects the market. They also visited the West Chester University
Planetarium as part of their space unit and the TD Bank (economics). Fifth Graders
took a walking trip around historic Philadelphia.
DVMSAC
Principal, Maria Kotch, attended a session of the Delaware Valley Minority Student
Achievement Consortium, “The School Leaders Our Children Deserve.” The presenter,
Dr. Gorge Theoharis from Syracuse University, gave a three pronged approach to
achieving equity and social justice in our schools. Dr. Theoharis’ presentation was very
affirming of the work we have done on inclusion through The Arcadia Initiative.
Martin Luther King Day of Service
About 200 people participated in our annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. Teams
gathered in the Media cafeteria before dispersing to service sites. This year’s projects
including preparing meals (Media Presbyterian Church), sorting children’s items for
Cradles to Crayons, creating baby blankets and pillows, visiting with seniors at The
Sterling Nursing Home, and creating breakfast bags for homeless shelters. Parent,
Regina Pearse, chaired this wonderful event. Everyone returned to school for a pizza
lunch and some fellowship.
ROSE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
First Grade
First grade has been learning about animals in winter and culminated their unit of study
with a Hibernation Day Celebration. We had fun wearing our comfy clothes and
pretending we were bears hiding in our caves. We wrote about, read and made a
special craft to reinforce our learning!! We also made posters to honor Martin Luther
King and learned about his life.
Third Grade
Students in the third grade visited the Upper Providence Township Building and learned
out how our local government works. They visited the police department, the Township
Council hearing room and learned about what it takes to run our township.
Fifth Grade
The fifth grade students were very busy in January. They prepared for and participated
in the National Geographic Geography Bee. Preparation for the Bee included games
School Reports
7

and activities such as "Continental Scavenger Hunt" and "Name That Land Form."
Teachers, parents, and students were amazed at the geographic expertise exhibited by
their class representatives. The students also prepared for their annual Fifth Grade
Science Fair. As preparation, students chose mini experiments to perform for their
classmates, explaining how each step of the scientific method was utilized. Then, they
applied this to their own science project. Parents were invited to view the students'
efforts. The students did an excellent job with their knowledgeable presentations.
IST
Using a data-driven approach, the Instructional Support Team continued to play an
active role in creating and implementing strategies to strengthen at-risk and some-risk
students’ academic, social and/or emotional weaknesses within the regular education
classroom in grades 1-5. In order to create effective plans and strategies to meet
students at their instructional levels, information was reviewed from a variety of sources
such as: Instructional support team process, PSSA, Measure of Academic Progress
(MAP), Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), Developmental
Reading Assessment (DRA), Project Read Beginning &/or End-of-Year Assessment,
Ganske assessment, Developmental Writing Assessment (DWA), Read Naturally and/or
6-Minute Solution, KidBiz 3000, Pearson Education Investigation pre-assessment,
Administered October 2009 and/or January 2010, Compass Learning, Tools for
Success, and Teacher input (including what was reported at Data Conferences)
Martin Luther King Day
The PTG sponsored the MLK Day of Service at Rose Tree this year. Students signed
up for community based, off-site activities such as helping the firemen at the Rose Tree
Fire House, Martin’s Run The Meadows, Aid for Friends: meal prep, Greener Partners:
painting garden markers for the gardens at Hillside Elwyn, Meals on Wheels-Snack
Bags and Valentine cards, making get well cards for wounded soldiers at Walter Reed
Medical center, making doggie treats for the SPCA, book donations, making bracelets,
pillows and bookmarkers for the Women’s shelter and charity games along with a
Dance Your Socks of mini dance-athon. This was all topped off with Dr. Barney and
parents creating a mosaic mural portraying the handshake of peace using photos of the
children which will be displayed permanently at Rose Tree Elementary.
Other Rose Tree Events
The “Art Goes to School” program came for 3 days. This program introduced the
students from grades K – 5 to fine art. Grade level activities were provided for each
class.
SPRINGTON LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL
DVD-athon at Springton Lake
The first annual DVD-athon was held at “The Lake” in December for seventh and eighth
graders. Student teams played dodgeball-volleyball and danced non-stop from three
o’clock until 9 p.m. Student teams played against their peers and staff teams. All three
gyms and the cafeteria were filled with students and staff dodging balls, rocking to the

beat and spiking volleyballs. Student Council officers and representatives and the
seventh and eighth grade class officers helped to plan and organize the event for the
school. While seventh & eighth graders were jumping and jiving, the sixth graders had
their first movie night complete with popcorn, candy and beverages in the auditorium.
They giggled and snickered to the student-selected movie, Kicking and Screaming, with
Will Farrell. More than 200 students and more than 25 staff members raised more than
$2,000 for the Great Guy Group and Relay for Life.
Art
Ms. Sycz’s sixth grade students have been finishing glazing their pottery. As student’s
finish they are then applying the principles of design that they have been studying to a
new art medium, digital photography. Grade seven students have composed their
nonobjective painting in pencil and are now using acrylic paint to make the lines thin to
thick maintaining balance while trying to create variety. The paintings of Kandinsky have
been the source of inspiration. In addition to continuing to gaining skill in painting, eighth
grade students are exploring color theory as they paint their illuminated letter project
being inspired by the manuscripts of the Middle Ages.
Mrs. Going’s sixth grades are actively working on water color techniques for their
Chinese Zodiac paintings. Printmaking will follow shortly to complete the assignment.
Seventh grades will be wrapping up their ceramic unit soon. Glazed Fish "in motion' will
be on display shortly. Eighth grades are selecting the materials to complete their
Illuminated Manuscript paintings. Spectacular! All of Mrs. Going's students are
reviewing the steps to Blogging and will start using technology to complete their
assessments.
Mrs. Prior’s eighth grader, Talia Kaplan, has art work featured on the December page of
the Holcomb Behavioral Health Systems “2009-2010 Alcohol, Tobacco, and other Drug
Awareness Calendar.”
Math
Students in sixth grade are advancing their understanding of fraction, decimal, and
percent concepts. This study has been in the context of a school fundraising project.
Students did an exceptional job when they were asked to use thermometers to
determine the fraction of a fundraising goal met and then use that fraction to determine
how much money was raised. Students in sixth grade Accelerated Math are learning
about ratios, proportions, and percents. So far, the highlight of the unit has been when
we had a lemonade taste test to introduce the concept of the ratio of concentrate to
water in a pitcher of lemonade. Our seventh grade CMP2 the students are developing
an understanding of similarity by learning how to identify corresponding parts on similar
figures. The students are creating characters for a computer game and are making
comparisons by enlarging and shrinking these characters using scale factors. They are
working their way to analyzing scale factors and applying scale factors to twodimensional geometric problems. In CMP2 accelerated the students are exploring the
Pythagorean Theorem and square roots. They are learning how to calculate the
distance between two points, finding areas of figures of shapes in the coordinate grid,
School Reports
9
1/28/2009
and investigating rational and irrational numbers. Once this idea has been developed
the students will then use what they know to explore slope relationships of
perpendicular and parallel lines. Our eighth grade CMP2 students have started a unit
called Looking for Pythagoras. The students are exploring an important relationship
about right triangles that connects algebra and geometry, called the Pythagorean
Theorem. They will continue to explore the relationship between the area of a square to
the lengths of its sides, they will estimate square roots, develop strategies for finding
distances between two points on a coordinate grid, and use what they have discovered
in order to indirectly measure distances using a right triangle. Algebra I students are
working on solving linear systems by either graphing the linear system, using
substitution to solve a linear system, or using combination to solve a linear system.
They will practice using the best method and apply it to real-life problems. Our
Geometry students are working with triangles. They are using triangles to prove
congruence and similarity. They are applying what they learn in order to solve everyday
problems.
Music
The Springton Lake Seventh and Eighth Grade Band Concert was held in the school
auditorium. Over 150 members participated under the direction of Mr. Alan Reno. The
sixth grade general music classes completed a “sandwich” musical composition project
and will begin to explore musical instrumentation in depth. Seventh grade general
music students completed a unit on Tchaikovsky by analyzing the “Nutcracker” and the
“1812 Overture” from a melodic and historical perspective. Students in eighth grade
general music concluded a unit on the Baroque period with emphasis on Pachebel,
Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi.
Science
In eighth grade science, students have been exploring mixtures, solubility and water.
Students determined procedures and planned activities to determine both how to
separate a mixture of various substances (salt, sand, oil, water, and/or iron) using a
variety of techniques, as well as how to extract and measure the amount of iron found in
Total cereal. We have also been working on using graphs of solubility curves to answer
questions related to saturation and overall solubility. As a hands-on connection to this,
students have used hot water baths to dissolve unknown salts and use their data and
their previously developed graphs to determine their identities. Finally, we have learned
about properties of water, including demonstrations of cohesion, adhesion, capillary
action and surface tension. Classes discussed the parts of the water cycle and
connected this with previous learning on phase changes and states of matter. Sixth
grade students are learning about genetics. They are making Punnett squares to
determine probability for an offspring's traits. They are also using the science computer
Gizmos program to analyze the results of Punnett squares.
Special Education
In the learning support math classrooms in all grade levels, although students are below
grade level in terms of their math skills, they are still learning a grade level curriculum
with accommodations and adaptations. Because of this shift in programming, there was
School Reports

concern among teachers about the loss of direct instruction of basic math skills. In
order to "fill in the gaps,” teachers are using Compass Learning which is a computer
based program. The program is individualized for each student based on their MAP
(Measures of Academic Progress) grade level equivalency. The program is studentcentered, interactive and fun!
A presenter from the Delaware County Intermediate Unit recently conducted a
workshop for both teacher and support staff titled “Assistive Technology Tools You
Have.” The workshop was a great success, with many attendees remarking that it was
one of the best workshops they had ever attended. The focus was on tools that are
already included in the software installed on our computers. The workshop will be
offered again in March.
Eighth-grade special education and regular education teachers have made course
recommendations for Penncrest. The teachers worked in conjunction with Mrs. Gilroy,
Mr. Jackowski, and Dr. Taylor to make the decisions that would provide appropriate
challenge and support for students receiving special education services.
Dr. Jeuell, Dr. Gilbert, and Mr. Brown attended a Delaware Valley Minority Student
Achievement Consortium workshop. Dr. George Theoharis from Syracuse University
gave a presentation on best practices for achieving equity in public schools. Dr.
Theoharis emphasized the importance of offering students with disabilities access to
world language and other higher-level curriculum areas. Dr. Theoharis also pointed out
the need for classrooms to reflect the “natural proportions” of the school population, i.e.
that no demographic group should be over- or under-represented in a classroom or
school program.
PENNCREST HIGH SCHOOL
PHS Book Drive
Penncrest recently participated in a book drive to benefit the Reach Out to Read
program sponsored by AI DuPont Children’s Hospital. The high school collected
new/used children's and adult books for resale. Students were offered free admission
to sporting events in exchange for contributing a book to the drive. Additionally, the
community was invited to participate by dropping off books at the high school parking lot
where student volunteers met donors and collected books. Proceeds from the sale of
the donated books on Half.com will be used to purchase brand new children's books to
be distributed to financially challenged families at each well-baby visit from infant to 5
years old.
Susan G. Komen Foundation Drive
For the sixth year, Penncrest High School sent pink Yoplait Yogurt lids to the Yoplait
Lids for Lives Campaign. This year’s collection was the most outstanding to date, nearly
doubling their numbers from previous years, making the total contribution over $315.

Alumni Reunion
Penncrest High School seniors recently attended the Alumni Reunion panel discussion
PHS and Beyond. This annual event is designed to provide a venue in which our most
recent graduates visit with one another informally and share their insights about the
college planning process and the college experience. A panel of alumni, representing a
wide range of schools, answered questions presented by our current seniors. This
year's panel included: Ambera Carroll- DCCC, Liz Madara - University of Pennsylvania,
Andrew Mariani – Elizabethtown, Matt Munin – Northeastern, Adam Panichi – Clemson,
Devika Patel - Penn State University, Janay Smith – Howard, Joe Verica – Bucknell,
and Chris Voutsakis – Villanova.
POWR Program
Over 75 students have taken advantage of the new POWR program to date, visiting more
than two dozen businesses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The POWR
program (Penncrest Opportunities for Workplace Relationships) continues to grow with
several businesses asking for repeat visitations by Penncrest students. POWR is a oneday job shadowing program open to all Penncrest students. Students can sign up for the
program themselves or be nominated by administrators, teachers, guidance counselors,
or parents.
Course Selection Night
Several hundred parents and students attended the annual course selection night at
Penncrest High School. The event offered both a formal overview of Penncrest academic
programs and expectations to orient our incoming 9th graders, as well as a more informal
setting for all attendees to meet with faculty representatives of our different departments.
The purpose was to provide parents and students with additional information regarding
our courses during the month students select their courses for the 2010-2011 school
year. A complete description of all courses and requirements is available through a link
on the Penncrest website.

5. 2010-11 Budget Review (Attachment)
30 minutes
The Act 1 Timeline from the Department of Education requires school districts to
have a proposed preliminary budget completed by February 17th at the latest.
The timeline includes making the budget available for the public for inspection
twenty days before it is adopted. Districts must also give public notice ten days
before the adoption of its intent to adopt the budget. As a result, the budget must
be adopted at the January 28th Board Meeting. This requires the district to post
its proposed preliminary budget by January 8th and notify the public on January
18th of its intent to adopt the budget at the January 28th Board Meeting.
The proposed preliminary budget contains total expenditures of$ 82,232,513
which is an increase of 3.98% over the 2009-10 expenditures. The expenditures
include the continuation of current programs, increases for healthcare,
retirement, debt service and tuitions. The revenue for the district has been
impacted by assessment appeals. This is the first time in recent history
assessment values have declined from the previous year. Revenue is
$77,391,557. The District will apply for exceptions to exceed the 2.9% Act 1
Index by an additional 1% for a total tax increase of 3.9% for a millage rate of
22.4655. An assessment value of $236,176 will result in an annual increase of
$200. The use of $4,840,956 of fund balance will be used to balance the budget.
Action: This item will be moved for approval at the January 28, 2010 Legislative
Meeting.
The next Finance Committee meeting will be held on February 9, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.

Update on New Social Studies Materials, Grades 8 and 11
Social Studies teachers from grades 8 and 11 updated and thanked the Board for
materials purchased through the 2009-2010 budget, in particular the new books and
accompanying web-based resources used in Modern America and 8th Grade Social
Studies. In their presentations, the teachers highlighted the high quality of content in the
new books themselves, which feature stimulating charts, high-order questions, excerpts
from primary source material, contemporary graphic design, attractive pictures and
graphs, political cartoons, and graphic organizers, among other features, all of which are
designed to interest students in history and stimulate their learning. The new materials,
with their compelling visual appeal, boldfaced vocabulary, chunked readings, and even
read-aloud capability, facilitate learning for students with a variety of learning styles and
learning disabilities. Extensive web-based resources, which the teachers demonstrated,
support the content in the books with sound effects, audio clips of historical events,
further readings, and links to additional internet content. The teachers also shared
several students’ favorable responses to the new books.
Update on Elementary Social Studies Curriculum
Social Studies Coordinators updated the Board on the ways in which the elementary
curriculum is implemented and enhanced. The teachers shared the details of a Civil
Rights Unit as an example of the resources made available to teachers and students. As
the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday nears, our schools are preparing to observe it with a
Day of Service. The Social Studies Steering Committee developed ways for teachers in
1
all four schools to honor the true meaning and message of Dr. King’s work in the context
of the American Civil Rights Movement. This is a great opportunity to teach our students
about democracy, social justice, and citizenship in the United States, as the American
Civil Rights Movement was a time in modern history when the voices of ordinary citizens
led to positive political changes in the country. To ensure that our students have an
understanding of these concepts, a complete learning guide and other resources for
structured lessons are provided to teachers. The Coordinators also highlighted the ways
web-based resources, such as KidBiz and Discovery Learning, contribute to teaching
and learning. The teachers thanked the Board for these valuable resources.
Update on Conversion to Numeric Grading at Penncrest
Dr. Taylor asked the Board for permission to rescind one of the recommendations from
the Penncrest Grading Committee originally approved on the March 26, 2009 Legislative
agenda: the conversion from an alphabetic to a numeric grading system. As the
administration moved toward implementation of this change for 2010-2011, obstacles
surfaced in regard to the logistics, technology, and costs involved in the conversion,
obstacles significant enough to lead the administration to request a withdrawal of this
portion of the approved recommendations. The Board granted permission for Dr. Taylor
to submit a resolution at the January Legislative meeting to effect this change. All other
parts of the original recommendations remain intact. If technology becomes available in
the future to make such a conversion possible at a reasonable cost, the administration
may want to revisit this possibility.
Special Education Update: The Elwyn Expansion Project
Dr. Gilbert updated the Board on the expansion project underway at Elwyn. Magellan
Health Services, in partnership with Bucks, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties, has
been working with Elwyn Inc. to expand the local residential resources for children and
adolescents diagnosed with Autism. The groups are working with Elwyn to renovate two
cottages for a total of 24 additional beds for adolescents with severe disabilities. While
Elwyn will be providing the residential treatment facility, the educational program and
subsequent placements will need to be identified and facilitated by RTM.
A planning group has been convened with representation from the Counties, Magellan,
Elwyn, The Bureau of Autism, parents and RTM to develop the residential treatment
program description and implementation plan. The project is a three county initiative with
Bucks and Montgomery Counties providing the funding for the cottage renovations via
Reinvestment Funds. The goal is to provide a specialized therapeutic residential
treatment facility “for the successful reintegration of children and adolescents with autism
back into their home and community.” Currently, the identified students receive their
education in other states. Because Elwyn is located in the district, RTM is responsible for
the education of the students who live there.
A discussion ensued regarding the implications of this initiative for the district. Dr.
Gilbert noted that tuition costs and increased administrative responsibilities will be
significant. RTM already facilitates the education of twenty one (21) students at
Elwyn and sixty four (64) RTM students in placements outside of the district. The
expansion project could add as many as twenty four (24) more students to that
case load. Dr. Barta described the intake process and the responsibilities of the
special education supervisor regarding the placement of Elwyn students. Board
members suggested out sourcing these administrative tasks and passing the cost
on to the students’ home districts. Dr. Kerr indicated that a plan to address these
issues will be presented to the Board. Dr. Gilbert stated that the Board will be
updated on this initiative as the project progresses.
