GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Library
Glenwood Library Technician, Kathy Cook, participated in the second session of this
year’s Delaware County Book Review Program at Upper Darby High School. Publishers
provide copies of brand new titles, and librarians may keep those books they review.
Mrs. Cook obtained seventeen recently-published titles for the Glenwood library, including
non-fiction, novels, and picture books valued at over $230.00!
MUSIC
Three of Glenwood’s fifth graders were accepted by audition to attend Songfest 2010 at
Swarthmore High School. The three students who will be attending are: Jessica Fine,
Katie Phillips and Brianna Ranieri. Sarah Sweeney was a close runner-up.
th
The fourth graders will be presenting their “Celebration of Music” Concert on March 25 ,
at 2:30 in Glenwood’s cafeteria. The show will highlight what the children have been
learning in music class this year. There will be a variety of songs and dances which are
sure to entertain you. Parents and friends are invited.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten, with the help of the entire Glenwood community, collected over 150 cans of
food for the "Souper Bowl of Caring" food drive. The food was supposed to be collected
on Super Bowl Sunday, but due to the snowstorm it was collected the following Saturday.
The food was then sent to The Loaves and Fishes food pantry in Prospect Park.
Kindergarten also celebrated Valentine's Day with a healthy red snack of apples and red
grapes while getting our hearts up and pumping while dancing to our favorite love songs.
We also celebrated the 100 Day of School by making Fruit Loop necklaces, predicting
what we will look like in 100 years and imagining what we would do with $100. We owe a
special thank you to all the parents who helped make this day such a success.
First grade
First graders at Glenwood celebrated the 100th day of school. Each first grader created a
poster displaying 100 in various ways...100 stars in the sky, 100 fish in the ocean, 100
candles on a cake, etc. The first graders traveled to each first grade class room to do a
School Reports

special 100th day project or activity. The 100th day was filled will lots of great 100th day
crafts, and fun activities.
Second Grade
Second grade culminated their Economics unit by hosting a Marketplace in their
classrooms. Each child opened his or her own store, in the marketplace, and sold a good
or a service. In the Marketplace, there were personalized cards, homemade brownies,
desk cleaning services, and other interesting goods and services. Using imitation money,
we purchased items and made change. The children and the Glenwood staff were
excellent consumers!
Second Grade
Second graders have taken a field trip to Media Theater to see "The Emperor's New
Clothes" as a complement to the Language Arts curriculum. Second graders will take
part in a "Green Foods Day" March 17th. A variety of green foods will be tasted, sorted,
graphed and evaluated. In tune with the district's Wellness Policy and St. Patrick's Day,
the majority of the foods will be fruits and vegetables.
Third grade
Kathy Cook read two books to the students while they were in the library. The books she
read were written by a boy who is now in third grade. He published his first book when he
was in first grade and has now published two more. He and his family would like to let
other kids know that they, too, can dream big and get published. They are sponsoring a
contest for elementary school students to write their own books with the top winner
getting to have his or her book published and sold online. Our students are taking part in
this contest. During February, they wrote books by either revising something they had
previously written or drafting a whole new story complete with pictures. Two winners were
chosen form each grade level and their books will be proudly displayed in Glenwood's
library.
Fourth Grade
The fourth grade is embracing the Chinese culture by celebrating one of China’s most
celebrated holidays. Fourth graders will be celebrating the Chinese New Year: Year of
the Tiger with a local artist. Mrs. Tsai and Da Shin Restaurant will be visiting Glenwood
to bring to life the essence of their culture. Students will learn to speak, sing, and write
the Chinese language. They will learn about her native country through her artwork, as
well as become artists themselves as they make and decorate their own red envelopes.
The fourth grade will also experience eating a traditional Chinese meal.
Fifth Grade
Students in Fifth Grade are participating in the annual NAACP poster contest. This year's
theme is "Taking A Chance For A Better World.” Students may choose to highlight a
historical person, place, or event. The Media Area Unit NAACP will judge the posters and
there will be an awards ceremony on Saturday, February 20, at 11:00 a.m. The location
has yet to be announced.

INDIAN LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Indian Lane is preparing for a Mid-Winter Festival hosted by the PTG. This Friday night
they will feature delicious food with a carnival flavor and games for kids of all ages. There
will be competitions, face painting, a moon bounce and many fun prizes for everyone.
For grownups, there will be a silent auction with tickets to sporting events and restaurant
gift certificates among other exciting items and some amazing raffle prizes as well.
Geography Bee
Indian Lane kicked off the New Year with our annual Geography Bee. Each year
thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee
using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to
encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in
the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Twenty-three, previously
selected 5th grade students competed in numerous rounds of questions with the winner
receiving a trophy and a chance to be considered for the State Bee. This year’s winners
were: First Place: Nabeel Khan, Second Place: Daniel Arsenault and Third Place: James
George.
MLK Day of Service
Indian Lane's PTG once again offered service and educational activities to celebrate
Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Silly Joe led kids in a number of International Songs of
Freedom and Civil Rights songs and some students performed plays/re-enactments
about important Civil Rights issues. They wrote letters to the service men and women
who are overseas and decorated "to-go" bags for the Ronald McDonald house. A limited
number of children went to Sunrise Assisted Living to play BINGO with the residents and
others sorted canned goods to deliver to Philabundance.
Unique Game Show
Our assembly this month was a Unique Game Show using multi-media trivia and teambuilding activities to combine team spirit, character education, and curriculum
enforcement into one program. This game show was customized and tailored to what
our kids are learning at ILES. The show is built around core subjects of history, science,
English, and math. The entire student body was divided into teams (red, yellow, blue and
green) and each team member wore their “color” t-shirt to school. The game began with
a curriculum based reading question; followed by a video question about pop culture trivia
with large screen video projection and music enhancement. Each round finished with an
audio bonus question. Teams generated points not only by answering correctly, but also
by demonstrating good sportsmanship and team spirit. The team-building part of the
game included activities such as physical challenges and team karaoke. This program
was a great way for our students to work together while reinforcing their studies. Even
the staff got into the game with Mr. Bennett leading the karaoke charge!
Reading Olympics
Our second Reading Olympics team is in place! This year, fourth and fifth grade
students will have the opportunity to represent Indian Lane at the Reading Olympics.
Faculty advisors are Librarian, Cheri Crow, and Reading Specialist, Judy DiMaio. To
prepare for the competition, team members will read 5-7 books, write about they are

reading, meet monthly to discuss what they have read, and blog about the books on Mrs.
Crow's website.
Black History Month
All month long, fifth grade students prepared presentations for the morning broadcast
show, News on the Lane, honoring notable African American figures such as Black
American Author Jacqueline Woodson and Illustrator, E.B. Lewis.
Read Across America
Read Across America is celebrated each year on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, March 2nd. This
year, Indian Lane will have a “One Child, One Book” reading activity. We are asking all
students to read the book, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. The book has a wonderful message
about taking care of the environment. Mrs. Crow, our Librarian, will set apart time to read
this great story during library time and the entire school will tune in for the movie version
of the book. Our hope is to partner with parents to promote reading and conversation.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students celebrated the 100th day of school on February 16th! They made
fruit loop necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal, skewered 10 pieces of fruit, measured with
candy hearts, and decorated Valentine's Day bags. All kindergarten students made a hat
with 100 objects attached! Happy 100th Day of School!
First Grade
th
First grade celebrated the 100 Day of School on February 18, 2010. The children
completed activities to reinforce place value and counting to 100. We rotated to each
others class to read a book about 100 and to complete a 100 Day activity. First grade
celebrated Valentine’s Day with heart healthy snacks. We talked about making good
choices with exercises and foods. The children exchanged valentines with their
classmates. Our first grade team attended a training session on the Organisms Kit at the
DCIU. We are excited to teach this new unit.
Second Grade
Our second graders went to the Arden Theater to see Peter Pan. This live theater
celebrates the joy of storytelling and the power of imagination. The classes had a
wonderful time visiting an urban community in our area and being able to take advantage
of seeing a "real" play on stage.
Third Grade
In Reading, we have moved into our third theme in the anthology, which is Incredible
Stories. In addition to the many center activities that the students worked on in class,
students are using our online BLOG to respond to higher order thinking questions based
on our in-class reading selections. Feel free to check out the students’ responses by
going to Mrs. Burke’s website. Just click on “Burke Blog Spot!!!” In addition to the writing
that the students are doing in class, they will continue to work on completing one writing
prompt each month, which will be assessed using a rubric. January’s informational
prompt required the students to write a letter to a friend describing step by step how to
build a snowman. They had to use strong adjectives to describe each step, as well as
use transition words such as first, next, and last. In February’s prompt, they will compare
and contrast two different poems about Groundhog’s Day. We are very excited to have

started our Solar System unit. We spent the first day exploring kidsastronomy.com,
searching for super cool facts to share with each other. During the weeks ahead, in
addition to learning all about our amazing solar system, the students will spend time
researching and writing a report on a planet. In Social Studies, we will continue with our
geography study, focusing on map skills. In Math Investigations, the students will
continue to fine tune their addition and subtraction skills through the completion of their
“Travel Story” homework packet, which they created themselves. Additionally, we will be
starting our new math unit about multiplication and division. During this unit, students
develop an understanding that we use multiplication to combine a number of equal
groups and that we use division to split a quantity into equal groups.
Fourth Grade
Fourth Grade is learning about Ecosystems. We created Ecocolumns which are models
of both a fresh water ecosystem, and a land/terrarium ecosystem. It has been so exciting
observing all our live plants and animals. In our terrarium we have mustard seed, alfalfa,
and grass growing, and crickets and isopods crawling around. In the aquarium, elodea,
duckweed and algae are growing and snails and mosquito fish are living happily. Fourth
graders have been so enthusiastic about this hands-on unit.
MEDIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Beginning Strings Concert
Mr. Walls and his beginning string students performed for their family and friends. Parents
were invited to play a song, “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” which just added to the fun.
Good job Mr. Walls and students!
Collection for Haiti
Media Elementary students collected coins for the relief effort in Haiti. Mrs. Williamson’s
third graders decorated containers for each classroom and collected the coins each day.
We were able to send a check to The American Red Cross for $1,679.46.
Winter MAP Testing
This year we will able to administer MAP testing mid-year. We found this to be a useful
piece of data as we track student achievement. All new students, Title 1 students, and
learning support students were tested. Some regular education teachers opted to test
their entire classes.
Author Visit
Children’s author, Peter McCarty, visited our school. Mr. McCarty is a Caldecottt winner.
He is currently doing a book tour for his latest children’s book, Henry in Love. In addition
to talking about his work and reading some of his books, Mr. McCarty did some amazing
freehand drawing for us. He also autographed copies of his books. Mr. McCarty’s visit
was courtesy of Children’s Book World in Ardmore and was arranged by our school
librarian, Jackie Matusow.
Origami Club/Art
January marked the beginning of origami club for a group of fourth grade students. Each
Friday before the start of school, the students are folding paper into 3-d forms. They each

make their own origami folders for the storage of instructions and ideas. A large undersea
diorama is now in progress. An all school art show is being planned for March 18.
Parents are assisting Mrs. Maxwell with collecting and matting work from each student.
The art show will be an evening event. Mrs. Maxwell is also working on a fifth grade
legacy project that is to be funded by the Wyeth Family. Our fifth graders create a ceramic
legacy project each year. This year’s project will feature sea and stream creatures.
Music News
Grade three students have just started playing their classroom recorders. We have a
specially designed instruction book for our school that includes songs and activities
aligned to the grade three music curriculum. Over the course of five months, the students
will master five pitches on their instruments. Additionally, there is a blog set up on Mrs.
Verdeur’s web site where the third graders from around the district can share their
recorder experiences and we have just formed a podcast library for “how to tips” on
recorder playing.
Black History Month Biographies
During the month of February, members of our service club, HOME, write and read
biographies of famous Black Americans on our morning announcement. Mr. Murphy
works with the fifth graders to write the biographies and practice their delivery. The result
is a very professional and informative message delivered each day.
Kindergarten News
After reading The Other Side, kindergarten students enjoyed a rainbow activity with a
poem that represented all types of people including big and small, quiet and busy, skin
color differences, language differences, and personality differences. Discussions were
held as to how we are all part of the recipe for the rainbow of living. In the next few days,
the boys and girls will celebrate Valentine’s Day and the 100th day of school.
First Grade News
First grade had a “Hat Day” where each child designed a hat based on a favorite
book/character. Their Hat Day Parade was a big hit.
Second Grade News
Second grade students read a story from their reading anthology entitled Jamaica Louise
James. In the story a little girl named Jamaica Louise James celebrates her
grandmother’s birthday by beautifying her community and displaying artwork of subway
passengers in the station. As a follow-up activity to this story, second graders
demonstrated their artistic talents by drawing each of our adult staff members. The
portraits hang on our second floor. The “staff gallery” has gotten quite a lot of attention.
The principal, teachers, support staff, custodians, cafeteria staff, and specialists are all on
display. Anyone who stops by comments that we are, indeed, a very good looking staff!
Second graders are enjoying the science unit titled “liquids, solids, and gasses.” Exploring
a variety of solids and liquids has increased their knowledge of the properties related to
each and has also greatly increased their scientific vocabulary. Enrichment lessons
presented by AGP teacher, Erin Schievert have enhanced the study. Grade two also
enjoyed a winter visit to The Tyler Arboretum.

Grade Three News
Third grade completed a unit on economics and took part in a web quest to learn about
money. They created and learned from virtual lemonade stands that earned them virtual
money. Classes saw “The Emperor’s New Clothes” at the Media Theatre as a
culminating activity for their fable unit.
Grade Four News
Karyn Confer, from The Passport to History program, presented two trunk shows to grade
four. Ms. Confer is the new director of Passport to History. She appeared in costume and
shared many fascinating artifacts of the colonial era.
Grade Five Update
Students have selected topics for the rite of passage that is the fifth grade research
project. Each student chooses his/her own topic based on interest and he/she conducts
research using books, magazines, articles, and the internet. Students have gathered their
resources and are in the note taking stage. Their work culminates in our wonderful
science/.research fair that will be held in March.
AGP
Media AGP students have been working on a variety of activities. Fifth grade finished
their Immigration/Family History unit. The students created I-Spy jars about themselves
and their family as well as participating in a simulation of immigration quotas. The fourth
graders performed a readers’ theatre on the Lewis and Clark expedition. The third grade
has been finishing their national parks projects by focusing on a “What Park Am I?“
activity where students identify a park based on its ecosystem.
SNOW!
We had to make some adjustments this month due to the weather. BINGO Night, a real
favorite, had to be postponed. The PTG, however, was able to have a dining out night at
Pinocchio’s and an Oasis Fun Night. Valentine’s Day Celebrations had to be rescheduled
for after Valentine’s Day and our in-service day had to be rearranged a bit. We had Mike
Kuhn, a consultant from Compass Learning and a presentation on internet safety where
grade levels had to create appropriate lessons. The contractual semester half day was
also fit in.
ROSE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Second Grade
Halfway Day was celebrated by second graders at Rose Tree Elementary! The purpose
of Halfway Day was to celebrate the halfway point of the school year, the 90th day!
Students participated in five learning centers, which exposed them to the concept of one
half: at the Half Price Toy Sale, students used play money and a cash register to
calculate the sale price of various toys at 50% off; students stamped out half a dollar as
many ways as they could; students used measuring tapes to measure designated objects
around the room and then used a calculator to divide by 2 to get half the measurement;
students enjoyed a book called Give Me Half and then completed an activity sheet and,
finally, students used vinyl letters to determine if symmetry was shown. Students brought

one half of an object to see that one half can look many different ways. Homework
included a Half Foot Hunt where children had to find things at home that measured half a
foot and a writing assignment where they had to tell when one half can be a "good" and a
"not so good" thing. Now, second graders can confidently apply this knowledge to the
concept of other fractions.
Parenting Partners Kick Off
Rose Tree Elementary is offering a Parenting Partners workshop for interested families in
our school. Classes will run for six weeks with the goal of building practical parenting
skills and fostering involvement in their children’s academic success. The course is being
facilitated by RTE staff members, Jean McPheeters, Nancy Gheysens, Kathy Johnson,
and Karen Daugherty. In addition, several district parents who previously took the course
and then the facilitators training will also be assisting with the classes.
Compass Learning And Kid Biz Professional Development
Rose Tree teachers attended Compass Learning and KidBiz workshops. Both programs
use differentiated instruction geared towards each child’s learning skills. These tools are
helping students achieve success and are available to them through our school website.
Teacher response to the workshops and the tools are very positive.
Kindergarten Registration:
Kindergarten registration was well attended as always. Many siblings of students already
attending Rose Tree Elementary were signed up to attend kindergarten next fall.
SPRINGTON LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Art
Ms. Sycz’ sixth grade students are applying the basic drawing techniques used during a
guided drawing lesson now to their own self directed nature drawing. Grade seven
students are now exploring watercolor techniques and color theory in their nonobjective
painting inspired by the paintings of Kandinsky. Eighth grade students are finishing
painting their illuminated letter project which had been inspired by the manuscripts of the
Middle Ages.
Mrs. Prior’s Sixth graders are reading about the terms “subject”, “theme”, and “style” in
preparation for creating their own painted works of art. Seventh graders are
illustrating the “Elements of Art”. Eighth graders are painting illuminated manuscript
pages using famous quotes and inspiration from the colors, lettering, and designs of
Medieval and contemporary works of art.
Mrs. Going states that all grades have completed their first "Blog". Some of the eighth
grades are extremely well written! Eighth Grades are completing their study of Medieval
Illuminated Manuscripts and will continue now in history to the Renaissance period in
Europe and the study of proportion, three dimension through light and shadow and the
development of the process of Linear Perspective. Seventh Grades have rapped up their
ceramic unit, soon to be on display and are working on an exercise to lead them into a
Linear Perspective unit. Sixth Grades are also just finishing a gigantic theme of The
Chinese Zodiac and will complete their study with the addition of a printmaking unit!

Math
Math Department Coordinators Phoebe Simmington and Bridget Laubach report that the
Sixth Graders placed 20th out of 165 schools on SIGMA contest #3 and placed 15th out
of 165 overall. Our eighth graders placed 14th out of 165 schools on SIGMA contest #3
and placed 10th out of 165 overall!!! Students in sixth grade are working on
understanding the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents. We are
currently working on Bit and Pieces I in the Connected Math Program. The students are
engaged in this discovery approach to learning how to convert fractions to decimals to
percents. They began by recalling benchmarks which were familiar to them. Some
familiar benchmarks are ¼ = 0.25 = 25% and ½ = 0.50 = 50%. Based on the
benchmarks, the students were able to compare fractions, decimals, and percents. Once
they were comfortable using benchmarks, others strategies were introduced and
discussed. Our seventh grade CMP2 students are developing an understanding of
Comparing and Scaling by learning how to make comparisons between quantities,
compare ratios, percents, and fractions, compare and scale rates, and finally make sense
of proportions.
By the end of the unit, students will be able to answer the following questions:
• When quantities have different measurements, how can they be compared?
• When can a comparison be made by subtraction? By division?
• Why is a ratio a good means of comparison?
• How can a ratio be scaled up or down?
• How does rounding affect the numbers used in a ratio?
• What is the relationship between ratios and similar figures?
• How can ratios be used in daily life to find unknown quantities or inaccessible
measurements.
• How can we use proportions to solve problems?
Our eighth grade CMP2 students are finishing up their unit on discovering and using the
Pythagorean Theorem. Now a2 + b2 = c2 really means something. We discovered that
there is a special relationship between the sides of a right triangle, and even more of a
cool relationship if the right triangles are 30°-60°-90° and 45°-45°-90° triangle. Our
Algebra I students are working on rules with exponents and will be moving onto our study
of quadratic equations and functions.
Music
Sixth grade general music classes are enjoying “hands on” experiences as they study
musical instruments such as a drum set and guitar. Students in seventh and eighth grade
general music combined computer skills with music downloads, MP3 players, and iPods
to present projects concerning “Songs That Communicate.” Forty-six Eighth Grade Band
members participated in Penncrest’s annual Winter Concert. The performance served as
a bridging activity for next year’s ninth grade musicians.
Science
Sixth grade science students have been learning about DNA and genetics disorders.
They created a paper model of the DNA structure. They have also been using the online

Gizmos program. This program allows students to interactively learn about science
topics. They were able to look at human chromosomes to determine if they had particular
genetic disorders.
PENNCREST HIGH SCHOOL
Hi-Q News
For the second consecutive year, the Penncrest Hi-Q team has won the regular season
Hi-Q competition. This accomplishment means the 2010 Hi-Q championship match will be
held at Penncrest on Tuesday, March 2. Coach Ludwig congratulates his players for their
long hours of preparation, for their unselfish approach to Hi-Q, and for their relentless
pursuit of excellence. Mr. Ludwig also thanks the students, staff, and administration of
Penncrest High School for their steadfast support of his team's endeavors!
American High School Mathematics Exam (AMC)
The math department recently administered the American High School Mathematics
Exam to forty of Penncrest’s top math students. The AMC is a national contest given to
thousands of students throughout the country. The students can answer twenty-five
multiple choice questions scoring up to six points for each answer. Students scoring 100
or more points will move on to the next round (The American Invitational Math Exam)
given in late March.
WWII Veteran Guest Speaker
This month, all Penncrest students attended an assembly presented by Dr. Leon Bass,
former Philadelphia educator, who shared his experiences as a World War II veteran in a
regiment that fought at the Battle of the Bulge and liberated the Buchenwald
concentration camp. Dr. Bass also shared his insights about conditions in the United
States before and during the Civil Rights Movement. His message was powerful and
well-received. This presentation, organized by our Social Studies department, was one of
many Penncrest has offered in support of our commitment to the “No Place for Hate”
program.
English Department News
The English Department is pleased to announce that 11th graders Rachel Hosier and Kyle
Panzer have been named finalists in the annual Penn State Writing Contest. Penn
State’s English Department notes: awards are given in recognition of excellent student
writing. More than 150 students essays were submitted to the contest, and the three
winners and seventeen finalists were chosen from nominees already identified by their
high schools as outstanding student writers. Judges from Penn State were enthusiastic
about the quality of the entries, and many commented on the fine writing and careful
thinking that characterized the essays – fine writing and careful thinking that attest to
excellent English instruction in Pennsylvania’s high schools.
Experience the Pride – Tours
Beginning this month, Penncrest High School is opening its doors to community visitors.
The school’s administrators are offering guided “Experience the Pride” tours every
Tuesday at 8:30 am. Visitors will be able to tour the facility as well as view showcased

World Language News
All PHS world language students participated in the annual RTM language contests in
February. Results will be announced in early March. Students, parents and staff
members celebrated the French holiday of Chandeleur recently at La Belle Époque
restaurant in Media. The dinner, sponsored by the PHS French department was open to
all PHS students. Students involved in the 2010 Spanish Exchange trip have begun their
weekly preparation meetings. Twenty-three students and two teacher chaperones will
leave for Spain in early March to tour Madrid, Valencia, Tavernes de la Valldigna, and
Barcelona. Through a variety of fundraising efforts, the Penncrest AP French Students
raised over $4,300 for the Doctors Without Borders non-profit organization to assist with
the ongoing efforts in Haiti.
Science News
Penncrest students recently attended the Bodyworlds exhibit at the Franklin Institute.
Students from the Biology II, Human Anatomy, and Physiology classes had the
opportunity to see numerous dissections of humans and other animals preserved through
the process of Plastination. Plastination allows for tissues to be preserved in a very
stable and lifelike form. The exhibit served to reinforce classroom content and provoke
reflection on our physical nature.
Music Department News
Band News: The Penncrest Band presented its annual Winter Concert in February.
Featured on the program were the works by Gustav Holst, David Holsinger, Stephen
Melillo, and a medley of Broadway melodies. The Springton Lake Eighth Grade Band,
under the direction of Mr. Alan Reno, joined the band onstage for a few numbers.
The Penncrest Roaring Lions Marching Band held its Fifth Annual Indoor Percussion,
Colorguard, Twirlers, and Dance Competition Invitational this month. The event featured
more than 50 of the region’s best Indoor Drum Lines, Color Guards, and Twirlers. Over
800 students from four states performed throughout the day. The band is excited about
bringing this high-quality experience to the area.
Choral News
Congratulations to senior student, Jonathan Friestedt, who placed 3rd chair in the Tenor 2
section at the PMEA District Choral Festival last weekend at Great Valley High School.
This high ranking qualifies Jon to move forward into the State-Region Festival in March.

2008-2009 Audit
The findings from the 2007/08 audit have been resolved and no longer apply.
There are no findings for the 2008/09 fiscal year. The business office is
implementing an electronic approval process for purchase order and check
processing, which will further strengthen internal controls. Total revenue is
comprised of 85.3% local, 14.3% state and .4% federal sources. 2008/09 is the
first year taxpayers received property tax relief.
Instructional programs represent 54% of total expenditures. Support services
such as guidance, psychological, pupil service and pupil health represent 9.5%.
Other services such as administration, legal, tax collection, business services
and central support represents 6.5%. Transportation represents 6% and
maintenance represents 10%. Non instructional programs such as student
activities and athletics represents 2% and other expenditures such as debt and
fund transfer represents 12% of the total expenditures. Salaries and benefits
represent 65% of expenditures, professional and purchased services represent
17%, supplies and equipment represents 5.5% and other objects and financing
uses represents 13%. The majority of the district’s expenses are related to the
education of its students.
The General Fund’s fund balance increased due to expenditures being less than
revenue and the prior period adjustment for a total fund balance of $14.5 million.
There is a designation of $1.5 million for future capital projects and a designation
of $2.1 million for future expenditures. $2.5 million is budgeted to balance the
2009/10 fiscal year and $4.8 is budgeted to balance the 2010/11 fiscal year,
which leaves approximately $3.6 million as undesignated fund balance.
The borrowing capacity for the district is approximately $150 million. Total debt is
$66 million. This represents the districts financial strength and ability to manage
debt.

Penn Fields – Plantings
The parking lot at the site was removed from the original plans by Middletown
Township. This resulted in a reduction in the number of plants that were required
to be planted for that area. At the direction of the township and a neighbor the
plantings were placed on the fence line and down the hill. The administration was
directed by the committee to seek the services of a landscape professional to
review the site and make recommendations on additional plantings. The
plantings are in addition to the approved landscape plan from Middletown
Township. Ron Baldino gave an update on the arborvitae that are doing well.
The plants are being sprayed, but due to the snow he was unable to visit the site
in the past two weeks

Update on Inclusive Practices in RTM Schools
The Directors of Teaching & Learning and all six building principals made a presentation
to the Board on Inclusive Practices in RTM Schools. Efforts in 2009-2010 toward greater
inclusion follow a year-long intensive focus on inclusion in partnership with Arcadia
University during the 2008-2009 school year. RTM’s goals for 2009-2010 include
sustaining the work begun in 2008-2009 through building-based teams, reducing out-ofdistrict placements, employing a tiered and multi-faceted approach to supporting
students’ success, promoting collaboration between general education and special
education, intensifying our academic press, seeking opportunities for co-curricular
involvement for at-risk students, and communicating effectively with parents. The
Directors and principals went into each of these topics in greater detail during the
presentation. Data shared as part of the presentation indicate a reduction in out-ofdistrict placements and an increase in co-teaching since last year.
Special Education Contracts
Dr. Gilbert presented an agreement for Dr. Peter Christie to provide the consultative
services needed to complete ACCESS processing during the 2009-2010 school year. It
