GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Library
Each year, the Delaware County Library System and our local public libraries sponsor the
"Create Your Own Bookmark" contest. Children in grades 1-8 may enter two original bookmark
designs; one winner is chosen for each grade level. Library technician Mrs. Cook publicizes the
contest to Glenwood students, offers tips, and collects them for the Middletown Library.
This year three winning entries were submitted by Glenwood students to the Middletown Library.
Winners were: Nick Dumont, grade three; Madison Wilhelm, grade four; and Ryan Dumont,
grade five. Their bookmarks will go on to a competition at the county level.
This year, in addition to winning locally at the Middletown Library for his grade level, Glenwood
fifth grader Ryan Dumont, from Mr. Heinle’s room, won on the county level for his "Catch the
Reading Wave" bookmark. He was honored at a special ceremony in April.
This is the second time in his illustrious career at Glenwood that Ryan has created a countywide winning bookmark. Congratulations, Ryan!
Reading Support
As a continuation of the Arcadia Inclusion Institute’s action plan for Glenwood, first grade
teacher, Julie Small, and reading specialist, Lynn Lista have been developing a co-teaching
model. Julie and Lynn are co-teaching to provide additional support to struggling first grade
readers in an effort to accelerate student progress. 7 students from kindergarten were
strategically placed in Ms. Small’s classroom for first grade. On a rotating schedule, these
students receive small group, differentiated instruction during guided reading from the regular
classroom teacher. On alternate cycle days, the targeted students receive small group
instruction during guided reading from the reading specialist. In this way, targeted students
receive daily small group, differentiated instruction from a highly qualified professional in the
regular classroom setting. Additionally, these students receive reading support services as a
pull-out program. Our results thus far indicate success. Of the 7 targeted students, 3 have been
dismissed from reading support and are reading on grade level. The other four students are
reading at or near grade level.

Mr. G’s fourth grade classes will be creating Power Point presentations about Isaac Newton to
introduce them into the world of physics.
Mr. G’s fifth grade students will be publishing 90 second movies meeting criteria set forth by the
American Film Institute (AFI). They will explore writing, storyboarding, filming and editing these
movies about a person opening a door.
Guidance
This month in Guidance we are focusing on personal pride. Having pride in oneself helps us
make good choices, be a better student, and be a good friend. This also helps us strive to do
our best on the PSSA and other tests in school.
First Grade
The first graders kicked off March with their favorite day of the school year- Dr. Seuss’s birthday!
In addition to activities in their own classrooms, such as making Oobleck, the students rotated
through each classroom for an activity related to a different Dr. Seuss story. This is a
culminating activity for a month-long author study of all of the works written and illustrated by this
special author. We are currently continuing our work in guided reading and phonics and have
begun a new chapter in Math on number, shape, and color patterns. Our new science unit,
Organisms, will be starting next month. The first graders have been learning about organisms.
They are learning about organisms HANDS ON. The first graders are using magnifying lenses
and their senses to examine seeds, plants, bugs and fish. They are presently working on
planting seeds and creating terrariums with different types of woodland plants. They are
keeping a written log of the growth of the plants, and making charts describing likes and
differences between living things.
Second Grade
The Second Grade Lily Pad completed a WebQuest to help them better understand the cultures
of Native Americans. This Webquest, created by Mrs. Grace-Green, used children’s websites,
Kidspiration, Microsoft word and Microsoft powerpoint as teaching aides. As the students
explored the various activities in this WebQuest, they thought about the Native American’s
beliefs, their lifestyles, how important the earth and nature were to them, and their relationships
with other groups of people. They researched tribes, then compared and contrasted life as an 8
year old today and life for an 8 year old Native American child in the 19th century.
Third Grade
In March, we celebrated Read Across America by having a spirit week. Children dressed up to
show their excitement for reading: Monday - Read Your Heart Out (wear red), Tuesday- Slip
into a Good Book (wear slippers), Wednesday - Books Can Take you Anywhere (wear a shirt
with a place name on it), Thursday - Go Crazy for Books (wear a crazy hat), Friday - Wrap
Yourself Up in a Good Book (wear a scarf). We also made posters that shared the favorite
books of each child at every grade level. So, if you are a first grader, you could look at the first
grade poster to see what your friends' favorite books are! During April, children celebrated
Poetry and Earth Day by writing poems about the Earth. All poems were written on recycled
paper and were hung throughout the building. They were a great reminder of all the beauty the
Earth has to offer!

Fourth Grade
As part of our ongoing study of Pennsylvania History, the fourth grade is going to take the "Ride
the Ducks" tour. The bus/boat will take the fourth graders through downtown Philadelphia
before plunging into the Delaware River. Also in social studies, Mr. Dieter's class is looking at
Pennsylvania history in the 1800's. Mrs. Gallagher and Mrs. Barry are looking at the Southeast
Region of the country. In science, Mr. Dieter and Mrs. Gallagher classes continue to work with
"Motion and Design." Here, the children act as junior engineers and use the laws of physics and
design to build a variety of cars. Via the use of microscopes, Mrs. Barry's class continues to
look at world not usually seen by the human eye. In reading, Mr. Dieter's class will be putting on
the play "Little Red Writing Hood."
Fifth Grade
The fifth grade students at Glenwood Elementary are participating in an exciting environmental
competition at Ridley Creek State Park. Students have been divided into teams for the
competition and will receive awards for successful completion of the tasks. The goals of this
program include environmental enrichment for fifth grade students, a cooperative learning
experience, collaboration between high school and fifth grade students and teachers, and a fun
exciting outdoor experience that will hopefully spark further interest in the field of environmental
studies.
INDIAN LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten
Kindergarten celebrated the marriage of Mr. Q and Miss U this week with a short
ceremony on Friday. The children dressed up, made Mr. Q hats and Miss U veils, carried
flowers, danced and had wedding cake. During the ceremony the children learned that Q
and U together become one sound, "qu."
First Grade
The First Graders have been learning all about mapping. Flat Stanley is a culminating
project that was inspired by this mapping unit. Each student sent a Flat Stanley to a friend
or relative. When he returned, we were able to learn a bit about each place he visited.
Some host families have even sent photos and guide maps for us to enjoy! The First
Grade is also beginning a new science unit called Organisms. They will be learning about
living things and what they need to survive. The students will soon be creating aquariums
and terrariums to host living creatures! In math the children have been learning about
measurement. They have been exploring the use of different units of measurement
including paper clips, snap cubes, inch tiles and their own feet.
Third Grade
In Reading, third grade has been working on specific skills related to the PSSA tests, as
well as preparing for the actual taking of the test. The common thread among the
students is that when a non-fiction story is read, they are reluctant to go back to the story
to find the actual facts. Some do it without reminders, but the UNRAAVEL strategy that
we have been practicing has been a successful one and will be very helpful when it
comes to test time. We have finished our unit on Incredible Stories and had fun with
unbelievable stories. Realism and Fantasy were discussed at great length. We are
finishing up our Literature Circle Unit on The Chalk Box Kid. Students love doing

this….talking about the books that they are reading…what could be better? Our monthly
writing prompts have been going very well. We are becoming better, more detailed
writers each day! We have been doing lots of creative writing in the classroom, most of
which is being saved for memory books. Our prompt for this month is “What I want to be
when I grow up…” In Word Study, we finished vowel team spelling patterns and will
continue with diphthongs (oi, oy, aw, etc.) after PSSA testing. We will take a break from
switching word study groups during the two weeks that we will test. In Science, We had a
wonderful two weeks preparing for and hatching our chicks. The kids learned how to take
care of the eggs before the chicks hatched and then they learned how to take care of the
chicks once they did hatch. We are still in the middle of our solar system unit as we do
our WebQuests. Each group will be preparing research for the creation of a Powerpoint
project. These will be completed and presented after Spring Break. Also after Spring
Break, we will begin practicing for a Reader’s Theater Presentation about the Solar
System. In Math, although we have completed multiplication tables 0-12, we will continue
our Blue Ribbon Multiplier Challenge. Teachers have introduced some fun and
interactive websites that will be helpful, which can be found on our homepage. Also, we
have been going over standards not yet taught and will revisit in more depths…fractions
of a group, area, perimeter, geometric solids, and much more.

We saw our first tulip blossom from the Journey North project. Actually, this was only the
first flower to bloom from among the 18 we planted in our experimental garden last
November. Many others, also planted at the same time, are already blooming in our Kelly
Courtyard. We think they bloomed earlier due to the milder climate afforded by the shelter
of the courtyard walls.
Run The Lane
Indian Lane PTG is sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk and 1 mile Fun Run on Saturday, June 5th
starting at 9:00 a.m. This event is slated as one of our bigger fundraising events of the
year. Our goal is to raise $5,000 through race participants and sponsors. It is intended as
a family event as there will be fun festivities for the kids during and after the Run/Walk.
The net proceeds of this event will fund enhanced technology at the school with a portion
going directly to the Norm Kelly Smiles Scholarship fund that assists with tuition for 2-3
Penncrest seniors on an annual basis. For more information: www.runthelane.com
PSSA Testing
April is testing month in RTM and we are doing our best at Indian Lane. Coordinated by
counselor, Jessica Hilden, students in grades 3-5 have taken tests in reading and math,
grade four in Science, and grade five in Writing. Retired RTM teachers Claire Boyer,

Nancy Palmo, Alan Donaldson and Bea Kriebel have been assisting small groups of
students to stay focused and on-task.
News on the Lane
News on the Lane will begin 4th graders to work on next year’s daily broadcast. Also,
current broadcasters are taping commercials about Indian Lane happenings. The first
one will focus on anti-bullying ideas.
Fourth Grade Chorus Concert
Indian Lane presented their Fourth Grade Chorus Concert this month. This concert was a
chance for all fourth grade students to share what they have learned in music class this
year with their parents. To integrate with the fourth grade Social Studies curriculum,
songs were chosen from different regions of the United States. Students opened the
show by singing “Fifty Nifty” about the United States and they performed “Erie Canal,” a
folk song from the northeast. Some students, along with the help of their parents, were
featured in the folk dance “Alabama Gal.” Another fun piece was the addition of rhythm
instruments playing various ostinato patterns to imitate the approach of a thunder storm
with the traditional song, “Rain, Rain.”
Probably the biggest hit was the movin’ and
groovin’ to “The Locomotion.” By the size of the crowd and the sound of the applause,
the concert was a huge success.
Bookfair
Our Book Fair is coming! The whole school is excited about our upcoming Book Fair. An
amazing selection of books is headed our way! At the Book Fair you will find the latest
and finest titles for kids, as well as books of interest to parents. Parents can contribute
books to their child’s classroom library using the one-for-one book program.
MEDIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
PSSA
This year much of April is dedicated to PSSA administration. Testing begins with reading
and math (grades 3-5). Later in the month grade 4 is tested in science and grade 5 is
tested in writing. It is a huge undertaking, but, we feel confident that our students are well
prepared. Our motto is “Prior preparation prevents poor performance.”
Our PSSA Prep Rally reinforced this message in a fun way. The Penncrest cheerleaders
performed a special Media PSSA cheer that included several staff members being lifted
up in the air to spell PSSA. The message was clear, “You are well prepared. Now, just do
your best.”
Food Tasting
Some grade 5 students, who are members of our school service club, met with food
service director, Lisa Taddei, to taste test potential cafeteria offerings. The food service is
working with us to select more healthful and appealing offerings.
Science and Research Fair
Each year our fourth and fifth graders showcase their research projects at our annual
Science and Research Fair. The evening event always attracts a full house. If you are
School Reports

interested in what detergent works best or what type of bread gets moldy the fastest, this
event is perfect for you. Grade five students select a research topic. They write a
comprehensive report and prepare a tri-fold display board. During the fair, students stand
with their displays and answer questions. Each student’s paper was the culmination of
months of work learning how to research, take notes, create an outline, draft, revise, and
publish an informational piece of writing.
Passport to History Play
Our fourth graders participate in The Delaware Historical Society’s Passport to History
program. Each year, Passport to History, presents a play at no cost to the participating
schools. This year’s play, Women of Many Colors, was held at PIT. The children also had
the opportunity to visit and tour Hedgerow Theatre, one of the historic sites in the
Passport to History program. The play featured the biographies of women from Delaware
County who made an impact on the growth and development of our country. Karyn
Confer, from Passport to History, also presented a workshop for our fifth graders. They
made delightful corn husk dolls.
Art Under the Stars
Our all school art show, Art under the Stars, was held on the evening of March 18. Every
child had at least one piece of art displayed. Guests were greeted by quotes about art
that lined the outside walkway. The building twinkled with special decorations that were
hung. A community art project took place during the show. Mrs. Maxwell helped families
create a tile section that surrounded her painting of a beautiful blue mustang (our
mascot). Raffles were held for art supplies and Penncrest volunteers helped serve
sparkling juice and cheese/crackers. Mr. Bugosh and some of his instrumental students
played music in the atrium. It was really a lovely event which could have only happened
with the many parent volunteers who helped mount and display the art.
Celebration of Music
Fourth grade classes invited their families to a performance that showed what they have
learned this year. They sang, played their recorders, and performed folk dances. Parents
were invited to participate- lots of fun. Mrs. Verdeur, the fourth grade teachers, and the
children are to be complimented for this very professional performance. March is “Music
in our Schools Month.” Preparation for our Spring Concert, scheduled for Thursday, May
6, is in progress. All fifth graders, and some fourth graders, will perform.
Pennies for Peace
Our Jr. Optimist Club selected “Pennies for Peace” as their first service project. ”Pennies
for Peace” is an international service learning project sponsored by the non-profit Central
Asia Institute. It seeks to educate American children about the world in which they live
and show them they can make a difference. The Daily Times was kind enough to run a
really wonderful article, written by Bette Alburger about their efforts.
PMEA Music Fest
Fifth graders Natalie SanAntonio, Casey Williams, and Paige Jacobs were selected to
participate in the PMEA MusicFest held, this year, at Strath Haven High School. Chester
Children’s choir director, John Alston, was the guest conductor this year.

SAP Trip
Third grade AGP students from across the district went to the SAP building in Newtown
Square. The new SAP headquarters has one of forty buildings in the world that has been
awarded platinum status for LEED certification. Ms. Tierney, a Rose Tree parent, gave
the children a close-up tour of the building including a telepresence conference with an
employee in California, a walking tour of the ice chambers, the green roof, and the
building itself. The children learned a great deal about sustainability and carbon footprints.
First Grade Reading Buddies
On Read Across America Day, fifth graders partnered with first grade classes to read and
discuss their favorite picture books. Their plan is to get together at least once a month.
Grade 2 News
As an enriching follow-up to their Economics unit, grade 2 classes prepared a hot dog
lunch in an assembly line fashion. After learning that the goods we purchase are made in
factories, and that each worker does a small part of the job, the students worked together
to prepare approximately 80 trays with a hot dog, milk, chips, and fruit. Beginning with the
“tray handler” and ending with the “tray transporter”, the serious second grade work crew,
experienced hands-on what it would be like to be on an assembly line.
Grade 3 Update
All grade 3 classes took a walking trip to The Media Borough Hall and police station to
learn about local government. Media Borough manager, Jeff Smith, led the tour and
shared his expertise about Media’s local government.
Grade 4
Grade 4 participated in a distance learning event from Ohio about area and perimeter.
ROSE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Physical Education
For the month of April, grades one and two focused on jump rope skills. Grades three
through five participated in the Presidential Fitness Testing which involves curl-ups, pushups, sit and reach, pull-ups or the flexed arm hang, and the half mile jog. Grades one
through five also focused on teamwork and sportsmanship while playing a variety of
games that involve fitness. A special mention for students in grades three through five
who participated in Jump Rope for Heart. Rose Tree’s Jump Rope for Heart event was
on Friday, March 26th. This event helps raise money for the American Heart Association,
and this year they raised over $2,300.
Academically Gifted Program
Third grade AGP students from across the district visited the SAP building in Newtown
Square. The new SAP headquarters is one of 40 buildings in the world that has been
awarded platinum status for LEED certification. Mrs. Tierney, a Rose Tree Elementary
School parent, as well as 3 of her colleagues who also work there gave the students a
close-up tour of the building. The building tour included a telepresence conference with
an employee in California, a walking tour of the ice chambers, the green roof, and the

building itself. The students learned a great deal about sustainability and carbon
footprints. The trip was highly engaging and left a lasting impression on the students as
indicated by the letters they wrote to the company. This trip will certainly be a reoccurring
one!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students worked in Theme 8: Down on the Farm from the Houghton Mifflin
Reading Curriculum. In Math, they began addition and subtraction. The children
celebrated Earth Day by focusing on ways to recycle, reduce, and reuse in the classroom.
Second Grade
Second grade at Rose Tree continues to take full advantage of the district's awesome
technology capabilities. Students enjoy interacting with each classroom's Smartboard. In
addition, to enrich and extend our science and social studies curriculum, the students
have participated in hands-on distance learning opportunities about Native Americans
and Butterfly Life Cycles.
Fourth Grade
The fourth graders at Rose Tree Elementary held a “Living History Museum of Famous
Pennsylvanians”. To prepare for the presentation, students read a biography of a famous
Pennsylvanian, prepared a speech highlighting the major accomplishments, and then
created a 3-D poster of the person’s body that was then worn during their presentation.
Some of the historical famous Pennsylvanians represented were Ben Franklin, William
Penn, and Betsy Ross. We also had some more “modern” famous Pennsylvanians
represented such as Bill Cosby, Will Smith, and Tara Lipinski. Parents and special
friends were invited to attend the presentations. The students did an excellent job with
this hands-on project. Their creativity and public speaking were just two of the many skills
in which the students excelled.
SPRINGTON LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Andy Virtue, seventh grade Science teacher at Springton Lake, has been recognized by
his alma mater, Cabrini College, with the St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Award for Community
Service. Since 2004, Andy has planned and executed the Hoops for Hope basketball
game between SLMS faculty and the Boys’ and Girls’ Eighth Grade Basketball teams. In
the past six years, the game has raised more than $10,000 for underserved and
underprivileged schools in Africa. The money has funded educational equipment such as
desks, library books and computers. It has also helped with the construction of facilities
at the schools including a modern bathroom with running water.
The first game in 2004 raised about $600 for the Hope Academy in Masaka, Uganda.
This year more than $2,000 was raised. Sell-out crowds watch the game each year
where students and more than 60 teachers and administrators work the game. Andy will
be honored by Cabrini during the annual alumni weekend June 4 & 5. Congratulations
Andy!
Seventh graders Chris Urffer and Nate Sides, after winning the Springton Lake Spelling
Bee, went on to compete at the county-wide Spelling Bee on March 20th at Neumann

very well in the face of such challenges!
Art
Ms. Sycz’s sixth grade students have begun sculpting clay birds including a natural
setting. This lesson allows students to compare and contrast with the previous drawing
lesson of drawing a bird using shapes as compared to using now using form. Grade
seven students have completed making armature and now are sculpting the basic forms
for their sculpture unit which involves creating clay heads showcasing some type of head
covering. Eighth grade students have begun sculpting the human figure which includes
the study of famous sculptures by Michelangelo, Rodin and Brancusi.
Mrs. Going’s sixth grades are actively working on the Element of Form, either Sculpture
in-the-round or Relief Sculptures. The cultures of the Zuni Native Americans and the
Aztecs are incorporated into each study and will end in a culminating creative writing.
Seventh Grades are pretending to be graphic artists with the task of designing an original
CD cover for their favorite music genre. They will be proficient in the development of block
lettering and one point Linear Perspective as well as coming up with a really cool
illustration. Eighth grades are well on their way to understanding how difficult it really was
to sculpt the human form by Renaissance master, Michelangelo, now that they are well
into their own clay sculpture! Proportion, proportion, proportion. And they aren't even
laboring over marble!
Ms. Davidson, from the University of the Arts, is wonderfully leading Mrs. Prior's classes
through their clay units. Sixth graders are creating clay pagodas influenced by Chinese
architecture. Seventh graders are using problem solving skills to create clay sculptures of
food inspired by Pop Art. Eighth graders are sculpting clay figures after looking at the
artistry and costumes of the Renaissance period, as well as, African, Egyptian, Japanese,
Mexican, and American cultures.
Library
At the March District Library meeting, Winnie Host and LaVerne Motley shared the 2010
letters to businesses and flyers they had developed at the February in-service meeting.
Cheri Marzano had a particularly good suggestion about adapting flyers to a book slip
format that could be put into books as they were signed out at the public and school
libraries. Winnie Host and Linda Rowley have been canvassing Media to recruit
businesses to again offer incentives to patrons who share a poem during the week.
When all of the letters and fliers were revised, materials were sent to the printers and are
now ready to distribute throughout the district, public libraries, and Media Fellowship
House. Poem in Your Pocket Week is scheduled for Monday, April 26 through Saturday,
May 1, 2010. In preparation for our second Poem in Your Pocket Celebration, poet Aaren
Perry presented four poetry writing workshops in the SLMS library. Classes included all
grades and levels: co-taught, heterogeneous, ELA and AGP. He was also available
during lunch to answer teacher questions. Mr. Perry left materials and suggestions for
sharing as well.
Mrs. Motley presented a half-day workshop entitled Assessment -- The Product: The
Why, the What and the How to librarians at the Chester County IU. This was the third of

three assessment workshops designed specifically for librarians by the Pennsylvania
Department of Education.
Eighth grade students from the classes of Mrs. McCarthy and Mr. Krugler researched
Roman emperors and then drew a coin with a likeness of the emperor. The coin, along
with bulleted facts for presentation, was mounted on a paper frame.
Mrs. Motley presented book talks for Mrs. Newsome’s sixth grade language arts students
who were selecting biographies for book chats which could take the form of a timeline,
PowerPoint or picture book.
Prior to his visit, discounted books by visiting author Jordan Sonnenblick were on sale in
the library so that students and staff could purchase them for autographing the day of his
visit. Mr. Sonnenblick spoke at three grade level assemblies and signed books after each
presentation. He was also feted at an afternoon tea in the library attended by over fifty
“big fans” who had an opportunity to pose questions in a more personal setting.
Mrs. Motley read Dodger and Me to students from Mrs. Hemenway’s Life Skills class in
preparation for Visiting Author Day. Students got to meet the author and relate what their
favorite parts of the book were and then posed for a picture with the author.
Math
In Eighth Grade CMP2 we have been reviewing for the PSSA for the last 2 weeks.
Students have enjoyed the break. We will be starting a new unit called Frogs, Fleas and
Painted Cubes in April. In this unit, students will recognize and represent quadratic
functions and learn to factor simple quadratic expressions. In addition to preparing for
PSSA, Algebra I students have been continuing their work with quadratic equations.
They have been practicing solving quadratic equations by graphing, factoring, and taking
the square roots.
In Geometry, we are continuing our study of the entire book. We are currently learning
about circles. We are using properties of segments that intersect circles, applying angle
relationships in circles, and using circles in the coordinate plane.
In Seventh Grade CMP2, we too have been preparing of PSSA, while finishing up our unit
on ratios, rates, and proportions—Comparing and Scaling. We are now going to be
working with integers in our new unit, Accentuate the Negative. Our circle of numbers as
we know it has now expanded to include both positive and negative whole numbers,
fractions, decimals, and zero.
The Sixth Grade math classes have spent the last 2 weeks intensively reviewing for the
PSSA's. Whether it is practice with multiple choice questions, working on open-ended
items, or reviewing general test-taking strategies, the 6th grade students have been
working hard to prepare for the state test.
Before the review, students were working in the Connected Math book Shapes and
Designs. The focus is on two-dimensional geometry, and students learn how to
recognize, display, analyze, measure, and reason about shapes and visual patterns that

are important features of our world. Students will resume studying these concepts
following the PSSAs.
Social Studies
The sixth grade social studies classes are currently finishing their study of Apartheid in
South Africa. They will begin studying European geography within the next week and
then begin the study of the Holocaust shortly thereafter. The students will study the major
events leading up to World War II and the development and implementation of the Nazi
regimes racist policies. The unit will focus on the themes of tolerance and respect and
include the study of the personal stories of those who perished and survived the
Holocaust. The hope is that the students will apply some of the lessons learned from this
tragedy to their own lives and personal interactions. The unit on the Holocaust will
culminate with the annual trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in
Washington, D.C. This cross-curricular unit coincides with the study of World War
II/Holocaust novels in language arts.
In the past month, the Seventh Grade students completed their Lewis and Clark Traveling
Trunks. These projects had the students look into the Lewis and Clark expedition. The
students researched: team members, discoveries, technologies used, landforms, plants,
animals, and Native American tribes they encountered. Next, the students began looking
into the lives of enslaved African Americans prior to the Civil War. Students looked at
their lives, culture, and hardships endured. Students then created African American Story
quilts which creatively retold the stories of the daily lives of the enslaved African
Americans. We are now beginning the Civil War and events which led up to this terrible
national tragedy. At the end of the month the seventh Grade will be taking a class trip to
the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.
At the beginning of the Ancient Roman unit, eighth grade students examined the
elements of the Roman government that our American founding fathers adapted from
the Roman Republic. The students also looked at how the writers of the American
constitution changed aspects of government in the Roman Republic and the Roman
Empire to form a better-working democracy. Also, the eighth grade students have been
examining Roman coins and evaluating the propaganda on these coins. They used them
to help evaluate the policies of Roman Emperors. Students completed projects based on
these ideas. The classes have been using History Alive textbooks to look at the lives of
Roman teenagers and compare them to the lives of American teenagers.
Special Education
PSSA testing occurred with the full participation of all special education staff and
students. This year, the staff worked especially hard to ensure that IEP accommodations
were delivered in the optimal environment, usually in the regular education classroom.
Those students who did require small-group testing were assigned to work with familiar
teachers in familiar settings.
Mr. Brown and Mrs. Horan administered the Test of Word Reading Efficiency (TOWRE) to
students with IEPs suspected of having difficulties with reading fluency and/or decoding.
The test results will help the department determine which students will need direct
instruction in these areas during the 2010-2011 school year.

Students who participate in the life skills program took a trip to Citizens Bank Park. The
students toured the playing field and other park facilities. The class had a great
experience and is grateful for having had the opportunity to go.
The special education secretaries from the elementary, middle, and high school levels
met in late March to discuss a number of issues, including compliance with state
regulations, maintaining computer databases, and record-keeping. Now that secretaries
are in place at each level, the district is able to maintain a much more cohesive and
comprehensive information system to track the progress of students receiving special
education services.
Work is underway to prepare for Extended School Year (ESY) services in Summer 2010.
The department has identified students who require services, and Dr. Barta and Mr.
Brown have arranged for staffing. We look forward to another successful ESY program
this summer!

Proposed New Textbooks for 2010-2011
Dr. Taylor and Dr. Gilbert presented a list of proposed textbook purchases for the 20102011 school year. The Board must approve textbook purchases, according to policies
105, 107, and 109, which cover Curriculum Development, Adoption of Planned
Instruction, and Resource Materials. After the presentation, the Board gave permission
for the list of proposed textbook purchases to appear as a resolution on the April
legislative agenda. Purchases for 2010-2011 are proposed at a total of $147,000, which
is a savings of $105,000 from 2009-2010.
Contract Renewals for Online Subscriptions for 2010-2011
Dr. Taylor and Dr. Gilbert also presented a list of proposed contract renewals for online
subscriptions for 2010-2011. These subscriptions cover a variety of resources, but fall in
two general categories: resource materials used in the district’s libraries, such as the
Follett library operating system or the Facts on File database, and programs used
explicitly for instruction, such as KidBiz/TeenBiz. The Board gave permission for the list
of proposed contract renewals to appear as a resolution on the April legislative agenda.
The total of these purchases comes to about $160,000, a reduction of $6,000 from the
2009-2010 budget for this same purpose.
Preview of Summer Reading 2010
Dr. Taylor and Dr. Gilbert previewed the Summer Reading program for this coming
summer. Penncrest is changing several of the titles in order to promote a high level of
student motivation and to create stronger links to the existing curriculum. All but one of
the new titles is available in audio versions for students with reading disabilities. At
Springton Lake, the choice for the required reading for 8th grade has been expanded to
1
include five titles. The 8th grade now also suggests a list of well-established American
and British authors for consideration as students choose their second required book.
The 6th and 7th grade selections remain the same. The elementary lists have been
expanded with a variety of titles which reflect current events, such as the Obama
presidency, and more diverse multi-cultural selections.

Comparison of Infradapt and Cisco Telephone System Proposals
After a lengthy process of information gathering by Ron Harris and Patti Linden, Ron
presented two proposals for a district-wide telephone system upgrade. Both proposals
allow for a Voice Over IP solution in order to stay current with 21st Century technology
and continue to be cost effective. The two proposals presented were the top two
recommendations from the Technology Department after sorting out a multitude of other
factors. The proposal from Cisco totaled $408,493 for a complete district
implementation, while the Infradapt system totaled $246,706. The differences in the
costs are attributed to several factors. Infradapt is an open source solution which will
allow hardware from any state contract vendor and no hidden licensing fees. Cisco is a
proprietary system which will tie us to vendor hardware and additional licensing fees
when additions are needed. The two solutions presented were the most cost effective
out of all the ones researched. The timeline for this project is yet to be determined. The
Technology Department has polled other districts in the county and there appears to be
little consistency in this area. Cisco is a state contract vendor and with the Infradapt
system, we will be able to purchase hardware from a state contract vendor. At the next
committee meeting, the Technology Department will outline a timeline for the project,
the cost savings for the move to Voice Over IP, as well as the sources of funding for the
project.

*These year-end dates allow for three emergency
school closings during the 2009-2010 school year.
If fewer than three emergency school closings are
needed, these days will be deducted from the end of
the year for students. If more than three school
closings are used prior to January 31, 2010, the
district will use President’s Day (February 15, 2010)
as a makeup day.
Official School Holidays are Dec. 24, 28, 29, 30, and
31, 2009.
