Taxpayer Request
A taxpayer mailed his tax payment before the December 31st deadline. However, the
tax payment was not received by the District by the December 31st deadline. Payment
will now be made through the Tax Claims Bureau. The taxpayer will be reimbursed for
any late fees if the envelope for the payment with a postmark date prior to December
31st is forwarded to the District.

Delinquent Tax List
Board Policy #606 directs the Administration to advertise the names of property owners
in the district whose delinquent taxes have been turned over to the Tax Claims Bureau
for collection. The advertisement cost the district $2,515 two years ago. Last year the
District did not advertise the list. The committee recommended waiving Policy #606 by
not publishing the list for the 2010/11 fiscal year.
Action: This item will be moved to the February 24, Legislative Agenda for approval.

MTS Imaging Contract
The Human Resources Department presented a contract with MTS Imaging to digitally
scan personnel records. This will provide easy access to personnel records. Records
are kept for many years. Prior employees contact the district to inquire about the
number of years of service in the district upon retirement. The scanning will save time
for the HR department for retrieving records from district storage. Another proposal to
provide this service was $10,000 higher than MTS’s proposal.
Action: This item will be moved to the February 24, Legislative Agenda for approval.
Equipment Donation
The District uses Donegan Associates to repair microscopes at Penncrest. There are
20-30 microscopes that are 40 years old. Bernard Donegan from Donegan Associates
has inquired about the district donating these microscopes. The old microscopes will be
refurbished and sent to students on Native American reservations out west. The
committee approved the donation.

Update on PVAAS Public Website
Dr. Taylor previewed the public website which will soon be available to report results from
the Pennsylvania Value-Added Assessment System, or PVAAS. To complement the
absolute achievement results of PSSA, PVAAS expresses summaries of student growth
over the same time period, based on a statistical comparison of results from one year to the
next. Results from PVAAS have never before been available to the general public.
Several kinds of reports will be available once the website is open: the District ValueAdded Report, Grades 4-8, which aggregates performance for each grade level; the District
Value-Added Report, Grade 11, which provides a measure of school effects on students’
growth since middle school; the School Value-Added Report, Grades 4-8, which reports the
growth of students by school and grade; the School Value-Added Report, Grades 4-8; and
the PVAAS School Search, which allows the public to find the results from any school in the
state. Following this presentation, Mr. Pettit asked if the administration could develop a set
of FAQ’s to be shared at a legislative meeting and posted on the district website. The
administration will prepare these questions and present them at a legislative meeting in the
spring.
Proposed New Textbooks and Software for 2011-2012
Dr. Taylor presented a list of proposed textbooks and software for 2011-2012, as required
by Board policy. After reviewing the list, the Board gave permission for it to appear as a
resolution on the February Legislative Agenda. The proposed budget for textbooks for
2011-2012 is $97,000, down from $135,000 in 2010-2011.
Discussion of Swimming Curriculum
Dr. Taylor facilitated a discussion of the future swimming curriculum for RTM, which will be
necessary when the pool opens at Springton Lake. Dr. Taylor shared one handout with
practices from other districts and another with issues related to establishing a swimming
curriculum. After discussion, the Board requested a proposal, with a full scope and
sequence of skills, grade levels, duration, and other details, be prepared and presented to
them during the 2011-2012 school year, for implementation in 2012-2013.
Special Education Contract
Dr. Gilbert presented a contract for student JB to receive educational services at the
Devereux Beneto Day School from November 23, 2010 through June 16, 2011. The
student has significant disabilities and is in need of this specialized educational setting. The
student will receive the educational and related services indicated in the current IEP. The
tuition rate is $175.00 per day and the contract will total approximately $23,375.00 for the
year.
ACTION: A resolution to approve the contract with Devereux to provide educational
services for JB during the 2010-2011 school year will appear on the February 24,
2011 Legislative Agenda.
Contract with DCIU for Title I Services to Non-Public Schools
Dr. Gilbert presented contracts from the DCIU for the provision of the following services to
students attending non public schools, utilizing ARRA funding: parental involvement and
remedial reading and/or math instruction. These are the second and third contracts
presented this year. The first one fulfilled the district’s responsibility for Title I nonpublic
participation using the basic grant funding. These contracts reflect the portion of RTM’s
Title I ARRA funds to be used to provide needed services. Students and parents will be
served in the following schools: Nativity BVM, St. Francis deSales, St. Mary Magdalen, St.
Joseph. The contract amounts are $126.26 and $3,973.50 respectively.
ACTION: A resolution to approve the contracts with DCIU to provide services to
students attending non-public schools will appear on the February 24, 2011
Legislative Agenda.
Discussion of Support for Students in Alternative School Programs Proposal
Dr. Gilbert reiterated the special education department’s continued interest in a proposal to
allow a per diem employee to serve as the LEA in out-of-district IEP meetings. During the
discussion, board members stated that the proposal is not a long term solution. It was
recommended that a plan be put in place to utilize district administrators, as well as
teachers aspiring to administration.
At the Personnel Committee meeting that followed, the Board President directed that a
resolution regarding the aforementioned proposal be placed on the agenda of the February
Legislative Meeting for a vote.
ACTION: The following resolution to approve the proposal for Support for Students
in Alternative School Programs will appear on the February 24th Legislative agenda.
Resolve, that the Board approve the Support for Students in Alternative School Programs
proposal presented at the Teaching and Learning Committee meetings on November 4,
2010, December 2, 2010, and February 1, 2011. A per diem district employee will be
designated as the Local Education Agent (LEA) for students placed in out-of-district
alternative school programs for the remainder of the 2010-2011 school year only, at a cost
not to exceed $3,000.
Public Comment

Review of 2011-2012 Calendar
Superintendent Denise Kerr reviewed a draft of the school calendar for the 2011-2012
school year. The calendar includes 183 school days for students which allows for 3
snow days and a student end-of-year dismissal on Thursday, June 14. Although the
DCIU calendar has a holiday on Monday, January 2, Rose Tree Media will choose to
keep that as a school day. The calendar will be on the February Legislative Agenda for
a first read.
Review of Level 3 Quote Renewal for 1 Year Contract
Patti Linden reviewed the quote from Level 3, our telephone service provider, as a oneyear extension of our present contract with them. This contract must be in place by the
beginning of March in order to meet the E-Rate guidelines for reimbursements. By
choosing a one-year extension, this will put us in line for a renewal of our Internet
services agreement which expires on June 30, 2012. Next year, we will then be able to
send a Request for Proposal to bundle telephone services along with Internet services
and hopefully reduce our costs. The one-year extension from Level 3 provides all the
same services with a discount of about $2,200 for the year. This item will be on the
February Legislative Agenda for approval.
Internet Outages
The recent fiber outages, caused by traffic accidents, have resulted in Internet and email service down time. The Technology Department is now looking into a “multihomed” connection to the Internet to provide some redundancy of services. The
Delaware County Intermediate Unit is also looking at providing districts with a
connection to 401 North Broad Street in Philadelphia, a major Point of Presence (POP)
on the east coast. Rose Tree Media may be able to use that, provided that the DCIU
has a plan for filtering content from that connection.
Springton Lake Classroom Technology
Patti Linden showcased some pictures of the new Epson interactive projectors and their
use at Springton Lake Middle School. This provided a better idea of what can be
accomplished in the classrooms and how these projectors differ from the Smart Board
and projector classroom setup. As the Video over IP distribution system is installed over
spring break week, these projectors will also be the conduit for cable TV services, thus
eliminating the need for classroom TVs at the middle school. The teachers who are in
the new classrooms have had professional development from Christa Consadene who
facilitated a whole group session, as well as individual classroom assistance for each of
the teachers.
School Board E-mail Account
As a result of a request by several Board Members concerning the School Board e-mail
account, we discussed several options that the Technology Department can provide to
ensure that all Board Members are able to see all the e-mails. After the discussion of
the options, it was decided by those present that the e-mails that are sent to
schboard@rtmsd.org would then be automatically forwarded to each Board Member’s
personal e-mail accounts for the purpose of reading the e-mails. No one would respond
from their personal e-mail account and each of you would be able to delete the e-mail
from your personal account without affecting its status on the RTM School Board
account. The practice of who is replying to the e-mails from the RTM School Board
account would continue, but all of you would at least be able to read all of the e-mails to
keep current.

SCHOOL REPORT’S – February 2011
GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten
Kindergarten celebrated 100 days of school with many activities. We counted 100
snacks, and wrote all about the number 100 and what we would do if we had $100. We
also drew pictures of what we think we will look like in 100 years. Kindergarten has
learned a lot in the first 100 days of school!
Grade 1
The first graders in Ms. Salera’s class were recently given a special opportunity to try their
hands at woodworking. The parents of first grader Zachary Christman taught the students
how to build wooden birdhouses. They provided each child with a complete kit that
included all of the pre-cut pieces, wooden pegs, and a wooden mallet to drive the pegs
into pre-drilled holes. The students were thrilled to be able to put together their very own
birdhouses with only minimal adult assistance. Wonderful class discussions happened
spontaneously as the students set about building the houses. They speculated about the
types of birds that might come to live in the birdhouse, considered the best places to hang
the birdhouses, and predicted the time of year that they might see birds move into the
houses. By the end of the period, each child had a beautiful birdhouse to take home,
paint, and hang on a tree. It was a very positive experience for the children and an
excellent opportunity for hands-on learning!
Grade 2
As a culminating activity to our Economics' unit, the second graders at Glenwood set up
marketplaces to sell goods and services to their classmates. They learned about supply
and demand and how to price their items to try and encourage their classmates to
purchase from them. Many of the children offered deals in order to get their classmates to
purchase more items.
Grade 3
This month, third grade students are learning about people who made a difference or
fought for change in their community. Two people included in their studies are Lois Marie
Gibbs who forced the government to deal with the pollution of the Love Canal in Niagara
Falls, NY and Caesar Chavez who led farm workers in their fight for better pay and safer
working conditions. In math class, students are studying geometry...learning about two
School Reports

and three-dimensional shapes. They are also learning how to measure area, perimeter,
and volume.
Grade 4
On February 11, the Glenwood fourth grade participated in their annual Chinese New
Year celebration. The students learned about Chinese culture and the history and
traditions of the holiday. Preceding the event, the students read stories and watched
videos in class in order to learn more about Chinese culture. On the day of the
celebration, a special guest visitor came to the school to teach the students about the
holiday, Chinese writing and drawing, and other aspects of Chinese New Year traditions.
The students had a feast of traditional Chinese food and made and decorated traditional
Chinese red envelopes. Everyone had a great day and enjoyed learning about Chinese
culture. Most of the fourth grade classes are working on Poetry units with an emphasis
on figurative language. The students are learning about poetic devices, various types
and formats of poems, and writing original works of poetry. The reading classes are
working in small groups on various novels and non-fiction books. The fourth grade
teachers have also started preparing students for upcoming assessments.
Grade 5
In February, teachers were given time to met as teams in the leveled book room. Teams
used this time to talk about ways they use to the book room to differentiate instruction and
look through the materials available. Some teams talked about specific books that they
have used to teach certain reading strategies while others focused on books they use to
teach across the curriculum. Teams discussed better ways they could use the book room
and noted any gaps in materials that became apparent.
Music
Glenwood Elementary School had its eighth annual in-progress strings concert on
Wednesday, under the direction of district elementary orchestra teacher, Jim Walls. The
fourth grade beginning strings players performed selections from their varied repertoire
plus there was some dancing. The parents joined in and performed "Twinkle Twinkle
Little Star" on their child's instrument. A huge success!! The fourth graders are learning
songs and dances about regions of the United States in preparation for their “Celebration
of Music Concert” in March. Parents get a bird’s eye view of what the children do in
music class. The children will be singing, dancing and playing instruments. We may
even get a few parents dancing! This year the concert will be on Thursday, March 24, at
2:30 p.m. It will be held in Glenwood’s cafeteria.
Library
Glenwood library technician, Kathy Cook, participated in the second session of the 201011 Delaware County Book Review Program at Upper Darby High School. Publishers
provide copies of brand new titles, and librarians may keep those books they review.
Mrs. Cook obtained eleven recently-published titles for the Glenwood library, including
non-fiction, novels, and picture books valued at over $150.00!

INDIAN LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten classes have been preparing for the 100th day of Kindergarten, which
occurs on Monday, February 14, along with Healthy Heart Valentine's Day. We have
been keeping count since the first day of school while learning about numbers. The
children are identifying place values in numbers and counting by 2's, 5's and 10's, which
we practice in our morning meetings each day. We have done 100 day Smart Board
activities and read books about the 100th Day. We have begun our science weather unit
in Kindergarten. The children are learning to use their five senses to observe the
weather. In addition the children have brainstormed weather words, created a weather
wheel and graphed weather.
First Grade
First grade has been busy learning how to divide words into syllables. This helps them
decode larger words by allowing them to know whether a vowel will create its short or
long sound. In math, the children have been creating their own quick surveys. They
then did their own data collection, as well. This was followed by the children creating their
own representations of the data which was used for reflecting and analyzing the
information. In writing, the children participated in another publishing party! On this
special day, the children both received and shared their original stories. The children also
learned about the all important Punxatawney Phil and made their own predictions of what
he would decide about our upcoming weather. Chinese New Year was another special
day when the children were able to learn a bit about another culture.
Second Grade
Our second graders are busy exploring various fairy tales. After reading in Book Clubs,
where they work in groups, they describe and make note of the characters, settings,
goals, problems and solutions. Everyone is enriched by the experience of reading and
analyzing the elements of some of the old tales and the more modern twists of them.
Third Grade
In Reading, we have moved into our third theme in the anthology, which is Incredible
Stories. The stories that we will be covering in this theme are: Dogzilla (Fantasy), The
Mysterious Giant of Barletta (Folktale), Raising Dragons (Fantasy), and The Garden of
Abdul Gasazi (Fantasy). We will focus on the following reading strategies for the
following stories: Dogzilla (Fantasy and Realism), The Mysterious Giant of Barletta
(Question), Raising Dragons (Predict and Infer), The Garden of Abdul Gasazi
(Monitor/Clarify). In addition to the many center activities that the students will be working
on in class, they will also use our online BLOG to respond to higher order thinking
questions based on our in class reading selections. Coupled with the stories in the
anthology, we are reading snowy novels. The students are reading a novel at their “just
right” reading level and they have the opportunity to participate in small group discussions
about their novels. We will focus on problem/solution, author’s purpose, predicting, and
vocabulary. In addition to the writing that the students will do in class, they will continue
to work on completing one writing prompt each month, which will be assessed using a
rubric. January’s informational prompt required the students to write a letter to a friend
describing step by step how to build a snowman. They had use strong adjectives to

describe each step, as well as use transition words such as first, next, and last. In
February’s prompt, they will compare and contrast two different poems about
Groundhog’s Day.
In Science, we wrapped up our study of the body systems. In Social Studies, our main
focus in January was Martin Luther King and that will flow nicely into our discussions
about Black History Month. Map skills will continue to be practiced and our next science
unit will be the Solar System. The kids will be completing a WebQuest and designing
their own PowerPoint to share with the class. In Investigations, we have just about
finished up our Travel Stories, which took the place of our problem-of-the-week for
homework. The kids did an awesome job with these problems. Additionally, we have
begun our new math unit in multiplication. During this unit, students develop an
understanding that we use multiplication to combine a number of equal groups. All tables
will be introduced and practiced here in the classroom for the next several weeks. We will
also begin our fraction unit at the same time. PSSA’s are not far away so we want to
begin some of the other topics that will be covered. Students will continue to be assessed
each Friday on their math minute skills for that week. Additionally, in the weeks ahead,
they will be tested on their multiplication facts (Week 1: 0-5, Week 2: 0-8…). We will be
investigating and practicing many strategies to solving multiplication problems.
Fourth Grade
Mrs. Haskell's 4th grade students have developed into stronger readers of nonfiction text.
Using lessons from the Navigating Nonfiction in Expository Text, of Units of Study for
Teaching Reading, Grades 3-5, by Lucy Calkins and Kathleen Toland, students
developed new strategies for determining main idea and reading nonfiction text more
critically. Reading partners immersed themselves into non-fiction themes of their choice,
and learned how to prepare their minds to read nonfiction, becoming an expert when they
read and "talking like a teacher" to expand their understanding of what they read. All the
student's learning and reading also connected to our writing unit on Personal Essays.
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade students are beginning the research for their legacy project. This year they will
create seven 6 ft. x 2 ft. mosaic tile panels reflecting the history and culture of Middletown
Township. Topics include: local dairies (specifically Darlington and Wawa), Sam Riddle
(of racehorse fame), Middletown Presbyterian Church, Native Americans (after all we are
on Indian Lane), Tyler Arboretum, Linvilla Orchards, and local mills. Assistance is being
provided by our artist-in-residence, Claire Brill, and the Middletown Township Historical
Society. This year, 2011, is being celebrated as the 325th Anniversary of Middletown
Township.
A Day On Not a Day Off
More than 80 students and 20 parents came to school on January 17 to honor Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr.’s legacy. 83 kids participated!!! Here's what the Indian Lane community
did to celebrate...100 meal bags were prepared and delivered to Ronald McDonald House
in DE, 85 dog toys and 25 cat toys were made and delivered to the local SPCA, 30
pillows were made and delivered to the Woman's Shelter in Media, 30 boxes of canned
goods etc were collected and delivered to the Media Food Bank, 40 dozen cookies
baked, 24 trays of baked ziti and 3 turkeys sent in by IL families for City Team, 160 letters
written to Soldiers, 20 American Heroes were discussed and posters were made to honor

them, and 13 kids went to Sunrise to play bingo with the residents. Also, a representative
from City Team visited Indian Lane students to talk to them about City Team. He thanked
Indian Lane for all their donations of baked ziti and cookies!
Mid Winter Festival
Our Mid Winter Festival was held. This very popular event featured a carnival-like
atmosphere complete with a moon bounce and Indian Lane’s own version of Minute to
Win It. To beat the winter blahs, students attended this event with their parents and
participated in numerous games and activities that were both hilarious (like Mr. Bennett
doing the hula-hoop!) and challenging. A good time was had by all.
Race to Nowhere
Indian Lane’s PTG hosted a private screening of Race to Nowhere. This film features
the heartbreaking stories of young people who have been pushed to the brink and
educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills
needed for the global economy. Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic running
rampant in our schools. This film is a call to families, educators, experts, and policy
makers to examine current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to
become the healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens in the 21st century. After the
screening, a discussion was held led by parents Dr. Jen Shrager and Dr. Eli Lourie, both
pediatricians, Caroline Knower, an educational specialist for the New Jersey Department
of Education and Principal Bill Bennett.
Over 120 parents and a few high school
students attended this screening. Feedback included a request to continue this
discussion with teachers and administrators, with the possibility of reducing or eliminating
homework at the elementary level.
NAEP Testing
Indian Lane was selected to represent schools across our state and nation by
participating in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). On February
3, our fourth graders spend about 90 minutes on this test. The results of NAEP are
published in a report called The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about
student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.
Going Green Assembly
Our Kindergarten through third graders attended a Going Green assembly. Go Green is
a wild and crazy show with a sane and serious message. Four space travelers from the
planet Ecologia land on Earth. They have heard Earth is the most beautiful planet in the
galaxy. But when they land they are disappointed to discover that planet Earth is on the
verge of destruction due to environmental disasters -- climate change, air pollution,
greenhouse gases. The oceans are dying, animals are disappearing, and garbage is
everywhere. It seems the Earthlings have been extremely careless in taking care of their
beautiful planet. When the four aliens report back to their planet, they receive strict
orders: "Save the Earth!" Our students thoroughly enjoyed this assembly and are ready
to “do their part” to save the Earth.
Art Goes To School

and hands-on props were used. This years' portfolio (24 prints) included some
representative works from Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, NC Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth,
Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollack, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins and more. At times
purposes and stories behind the paintings were discussed- at other times individual artist
techniques and styles were presented. AGTS presentations were well received by all
ages. During sessions, the children were easily engaged and eagerly participated in
discussion. They seemed to really enjoy the presentations. Some children even
remembered artists and paintings from previous years. Our local Media chapter is part of
a national AGTS organization.
Parenting Partners
In conjunction with Healthy Communities Initiative (HCI), Indian Lane will once again host
several HCI Parenting Partners workshops designed to increase parenting skills, build
parental strengths and involve parents in their children’s academic success. A team of
trained facilitators will assist parents in building practical parenting skills and engage
parents in positive leadership. Research has shown that the better equipped a parent is
with effective parenting skills with elementary age students, the more prepared and
effective they will be with parenting their teenagers and dealing with the emotional issues
of that age. The workshops will run every Thursday evening from March 10 through April
14, 2011.
MEDIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Black History Month
Check out the displays in our atrium, created by Social Studies coordinator Hans
Kalbach, that provide interesting information about famous African-Americans. Our
service club, HOME, wrote mini-biographies of influential African-Americans that were
shared on our morning broadcast.
Papa Tortuga Visits Media
Fernando Manzano, also known as “Papa Tortuga,” visited Media School on February 2.
Manzano is the founder of the Tecolutla (Mexico) Turtle Preservation Project. His group
has saved thousands of sea turtles through their efforts. Our students were inspired by
his presentation to dedicate themselves to something selfless and meaningful.
Hat Day
First grade students celebrated HAT DAY. Students decorated hats to represent their
favorite books and wore them to school. The day involved many literacy related activities
that aligned with state standards.
Portraits
Our second graders read a story called “Jamaica Louise James.” It is about a little girl
who lives in Jamaica who celebrates her grandmother’s birthday and beautifies her
community by displaying “portraits” of the people her grandmother encounters in the
subway each day. Students in second grade created portraits of every one of our staff
members. They are on display in the second floor hallway where they beautify our school.
Consensus is that we are a very good looking group.

research in the library and choosing a method for their presentations. They are learning a
lot from each other.
Passport to History
Karyn Confer, from The Passport to History program gave a lesson about the history of
education to our fourth graders. The students got a look at old spelling, reading, and
coloring books. They each made a corn husk doll and a bookmark to take home. They
also received a stamp in their “passport” for learning about the Pennsylvania state flag.
Student Led Conferences
Fourth grade students are preparing for their student led conferences. Students reviewed
their goal sheets to check for progress. They also began completing self-evaluations in
order to identify strengths and weaknesses and to create new goals.
PIRC (Parent Information and Resource Center)
We have continued to offer bi-weekly programs in our PIRC. Patti Linden, RTM”s Director
of Technology, recently offered a workshop called “Raising Digital Children.”
Data Conferences
Data conferences (round #2) were recently completed. Data conferences are an
opportunity for classroom teachers to reflect on student growth and interventions in a
collaborative setting.
Clubs
We have recently added Chinese and French to our already thriving afterschool clubs.
Teachers Susan Howe and Lindsi Ciuffetelli are co-sponsoring the clubs.
MLK Day of Service
More than 100 people participated in our annual Martin Luther King Day of Service. The
day began at Media School. Most of the children went out to various service sites in the
community. Some stayed at school and sorted donations for “Cradles to Crayons”,
packed breakfast bags for the homeless, organized our 100 Book Challenge collection,
and made blankets. It was a wonderful day.
Bingo
Our PTG hosted a BINGO Night. It is always a popular event.
Practicum Students from WCU
We are hosting 12 reading practicum students from West Chester University. They meet
with their supervisor two times per week before dispersing to our classrooms to observe
and assist with literacy instruction.

ROSE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten
February was a very busy month for Kindergarten Along with all of their daily curriculum
and routines, we celebrated the Chinese New Year, 100th Day of School, Black History
Month, President’s Day, and Dental Health Month. During the 100th day of school,
students explored with manipulatives to create a variety of ways to count to 100. Their
multicultural lessons have continued with a focus on several African Americans who have
made an impact on American history. Families from kindergarten classrooms visited and
shared stories about their family traditions for the Chinese New Year and more. Students
are actively working through the district curriculum at their instructional level to become
great readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and citizens!
Second Grade
Second graders at Rose Tree celebrated their 100th day in a very special way – 100 Cans
for 100 Days! The students had a goal to collect 100 canned goods in the week leading
up to their 100th day of school. Small groups of students took turns counting the cans,
recording the data, graphing the results and calculating how many cans were needed to
reach their goal. The students were then responsible for orally presenting a detailed
update to their class. The canned goods were donated to a local food pantry which helps
families in our area.
Fourth Grade
The fourth grade is immersed in the study of Pennsylvania. They have learned many
facts about Pennsylvania including the state symbols and state flag. Fourth grade has
been fortunate to belong to the Delaware County Passport to History program for many
years. Passport to History provides opportunities for students to visit places of interest in
Delaware County and learn about the historical significance of their community. Fourth
grade was visited last month by the director of the Passport to History program, Karen
Confer. She dressed in colonial garb and showed the students how to make the toys that
colonial Pennsylvania children would have played with such as corn husk dolls. The dolls
turned out beautifully. Integrating language arts with social studies, the students read
biographies and did research on famous Pennsylvanians. They wrote speeches from the
point of view of their chosen person and created life-like posters to assist them in their
presentations to their classmates and parents.
Art
The artworks of Rose Tree Elementary students were featured in O’Malley’s Ice Cream
Pub during the month of December. Over 280 artworks were on display depicting winter
landscapes, holiday foods, gifts, holidays around the world, and poinsettias. The fourth
and fifth grade art club students painted murals for display in the Sweet Potato Bakery in
Media, PA. This is the third year that Rose Tree art students have been invited to create
murals for the bakery. This year’s theme included interior room scenes from the bakery,
while previous years focused on bakery foods and on the building exterior during the
different seasons of the year. The Philadelphia Museum of Art selected Meg Barney to
participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Picturing America
workshops. The Saturday sessions provided in-depth analysis of artworks contained in

the Picturing America portfolio, a collection of artworks that Rose Tree Elementary
received from NEH in 2008.
Music
Fifth grade students, Tabitha Cavaliere, Charlotte Croquette & Heidi Phillips were chosen
to participate in the 2011 PMEA Elementary Chorus Fest, hosted by The Garnet Valley
School district on Friday, April 8. The first, second and third grade music classes
enjoy listening to a guest professional Bassoon player that visited the music classroom.
Both the Handchime Choir and Special Chorus "Choraliers" continue to meet after
school to prepare for their Spring Concert. The fourth grade Rose Tree Elementary Band
and fourth grade String Students performed in concert for their parents and friends
recently. As young beginners, they made a lot of progress since September and sounded
wonderful!
SPRINGTON LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL
More than 175 eighth grade students enjoyed the dancing, snacks and “hanging out” with
their friends at the semi formal on February 4.
Art
Both of Mrs. Sycz’s eighth grade and seventh grade students have created a dream
board using printed images, drawings and words to visually represent themselves and
their goals for the future. Sixth graders are continuing to explore the elements of line and
shape in a second drawing. Students are in the process of choosing one of the two to
color. Some classes have made their choices learning about color and how the objective
of a work of art influences choice of working material. Grade seven students have begun
to sculpt the human head strengthening the clay techniques acquired last year. Students
are comparing and contrasting the differences between drawing and sculpting as they
sculpt the human face. In the first unit of the year, seventh grade students drew the
human face. Finally, the eighth grade students have begun a landscape painting which
reinforces the objective of the previous lesson to utilize the principles of design. Students
are creating atmospheric perspective by color choices to create a sense of depth in their
paintings. An understanding of the color wheel is demonstrated in the mixing of colors.
Mrs. Going’s Eighth graders are beginning their Renaissance Art study. History will go
hand in hand with their ceramics unit concentrating on proportion of the figure. The artist,
Michelangelo, will be highlighted. All students completed a Dream Board Collage which
focused on the student. Who they are now, where they are going, what they would like to
achieve in their future! Goals and dreams! This project was in conjunction to their first
Leadership meeting and Dream Boards will be on display soon! Seventh grades are
completing construction of their ceramic Fish in Motion. They will work on their Dream
Boards while clay is firing and before the glazing stage begins! Both will be on display in
the near future. Sixth grades are studying the Element of Form. They are both working
on sculpture in the round as well as relief sculpture! A unit on the Aztecs and on the Zuni
Native Americans goes with these units of study while the projects are in process.

Mrs. Prior is hosting Caitlin Schlosser, student teacher from the University of the Arts in
Philadelphia. Sixth grade students are exploring the world of color through mixing paints
to create colors on a color wheel in preparation for landscape paintings. Seventh graders
are practicing clay techniques on small tiles. Eighth graders are learning about the art of
Aboriginal dot painting.
Guidance
The guidance department has been teaching classroom lessons in sixth, seventh, and
eighth grade. We started a peer tutoring program this year and presently have twelve
peer tutors working with sixth and seventh graders. Some students are receiving one-onone assistance in organization and time management from the counselors. The
counselors are running social skills, coping skills, and family issues groups with students.
These groups meet once a week for one class period. The seventh graders received a
guidance lesson about decision making and goal setting. The eighth graders completed
course selection for ninth grade courses.
Library
Mrs. Motley has been working with a group of librarians from PSLA since last June to
update and rewrite the PA Guidelines for School Libraries that will be published on the
Web for the first time. This document has recently been forwarded to Harrisburg for final
approval.
In collaboration with sixth grade science research, Mrs. Motley instructed students on
trash and treasure note-taking. She followed up a few weeks later with an additional
lesson on ways to avoid plagiarism when gathering information and writing reports.
Actual examples of inappropriate use from past middle school errors made the lesson
relevant and practice at writing in their own words provided experiential learning as well
as examples for others. Other research projects included eighth grade science where
students from both Mr. Lazarow’s and Mr. Perket’s chemistry classes researched
elements in order to create an element cube and accompanying PowerPoint. Eighth
grade social studies students from Mrs. McCarthy and Mr. Eppolito’s classes researched
a variety of topics about Ancient Egypt in order to create PowerPoints to present to their
classes. Seventh graders from Mr. Reilly’s social studies classes participated in a
webquest of the Lewis and Clark expedition in order to create a portfolio of discoveries
and accompanying journal entries. Mrs. Williams’ seventh grade students each selected
a biography to read for their last book chat. Students in Mrs. Patton’s 6th grade language
arts classes selected books that were either recipients of the Newbery Medal or had been
named Honor books. Mrs. Motley pre-selected titles and students then chose books to
read for their book brags. Mrs. Newsome’s sixth graders selected fantasy and science
fiction books for their last book chats. Mrs. Motley created PowerPoint book talks to
introduce the collection of titles she selected in this genre.
Mrs. Motley reads weekly to the five students in Mrs. Hemenway’s life skills class. After
finishing a ghost story by Mary Downing Hahn, students are now beginning a novel by
this year’s visiting author, Wendy Mass who will be appearing at Springton Lake for three
grade level presentations on April 11.

Math
The Geometry midterm was successfully completed by our 40 middle school Geometry
students. They were happy to jump this hurdle!
We are finishing Chapter 7 where students investigate side lengths and angles in
triangles. They start by using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the third side
in a right triangle, and then use the Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem, and other
theorems, to decide if three given sides lengths form an acute, right, or obtuse triangle.
Students explore ratios of lengths formed by an altitude on the hypotenuse of a right
triangle and use the ratios for a 450-450-900 triangle and a 300-600-900 triangle. Finally,
students apply trigonometric ratios, the Law of Sines, and the Law of Cosines to find side
lengths and angle measures in triangles.
We will then move to Chapter 8. Students will find angle measures in polygons. They will
investigate properties of parallelograms and learn what information they can use to
conclude that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram. Students will also study special
quadrilaterals such as rhombuses, rectangles, squares, trapezoids, and kites.
Most of the Eighth Grade CMP2 students are currently grappling with Looking for
Pythagoras. In this book, students explore two important ideas: the Pythagorean Theorem
and square roots. They also review and make connections among the concepts of area,
distance, and irrational numbers.
Students begin the unit by finding the distance between points on a coordinate grid. They
learn that the positive square rood of a number is the side length of a square whose area
is that number. Then, students discover the Pythagorean relationship through an
exploration of squares drawn on the sides of a right triangle. In the last investigation of the
unit, students apply the Pythagorean Theorem to a variety of problems.
The students will be moving to Growing, Growing, Growing by the end of the month. This
algebra unit will focus students’ attention on a family of useful nonlinear relationships:
those that model exponential growth and exponential decay as well as working with
exponents and the rules of exponents.
Our Algebra I students are working on solving linear equations and inequalities by using
one of three strategies: graphing, linear combinations, and linear substitution. They are
identifying the point of intersection between two linear equations—the point that will make
both equations true. In systems of linear inequalities, we will be identifying all of the
possible solutions that would make the system true. Our next chapter deals with
exponents, the rules of exponents, and exponential growth/decay.
Seventh Grade Students in Connected Math completed Stretching and Shrinking, a unit
focusing on enlarging and reducing shapes using scale factors and finding missing sides
in similar figures. The program uses the “Wump” family of figures on a coordinate plane to
show how stretching and shrinking with a constant scale factor can produce similar
figures which are members of the “Wump” family. Students just started the Comparing
and Scaling unit which teaches scaling using ratios and proportions.
In Connected Math 8, the accelerated seventh grade program, students completed
Growing, Growing, Growing, the unit on exponential growth. In addition to exploring
exponential tables, graphs, and equations, students learned the properties for computing
with positive and negative exponents. The theme for the unit was a selection of stories of
the kingdom of Montarek and how the king would reward his subjects using various

exponential and linear reward systems. Students have been working in Frogs, Fleas,
and Painted Cubes for about two weeks and have been introduced to quadratic
equations.
The sixth grade CMP2 students are finishing their work in the book Bits and Pieces I.
Here, they gained and understanding of fractions, decimals, and percents. Students will
later use this deep understanding of various forms of numbers in the book Bits and
Pieces II. Up next, however, students will focus on geometry in Shapes and Designs.
Also, the PSSAs are right around the corner, and students will continue their preparation
for this important assessment.
The Accelerated sixth graders are almost finished with the book Comparing and Scaling.
Students learned how to make comparisons between numbers using fractions, percents,
and ratios. Students will begin their investigation of integers in Accentuate the Negative
in the next coming weeks. The accelerated students will also continue reviewing for the
PSSAs which are in March.
Music
Sixth grade general music classes are enjoying “hands on” experiences as they study
musical instruments such as a drum set and guitar.
Seventh grade general music begins a study of the life of Ludwig van Beethoven and his
commitment to explore and create new compositions. Students will perform his “Ode to
Joy” in the Yamaha Music In Education Keyboard Lab.
To continue the history of music, eighth graders are beginning the Classical Period with
emphasis on Mozart, Haydn, and a review of Beethoven. They will perform Mozart’s “Ah!
Vous Dirai-Je, Maman” (Variations on Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star) and create their own
variations in the Yamaha Music In Education Keyboard Lab.
Students in seventh and eighth grade general music combined computer skills with music
downloads, MP3 players, and iPods to present projects concerning “Songs That
Communicate.”
Forty-six Eighth Grade Band members participated in Penncrest’s annual Winter Concert.
The performance served as a bridging activity for next year’s ninth grade musicians.
The following students from Springton Lake Middle School participated in the County
Band Festival at Drexel Hill Middle School:
Seventh graders - Olivia Stallings, Kelly Long, Lauren Woznicki, Dan Kaplan, and
Timothy Parsons
Eighth graders - Dave McCafferty, Sam Messer, Noah Yamaki, Michael Yee, Brandon
Yee, Alex Messam, Dan Szkudlapski, Ryan Blessington, Chris Urffer, and Jake Doyle
Physical Education
Sixth grade classes had the opportunity to experience a variety of activities including a
weight room introduction, hockey and scooter activities. In the weight room the students
continued to learn about the different machines that were available for them to use. In
addition, they were given instructions on safe weight training practices and how simple

weight training exercises at their ages can be beneficial. In hockey, students were
instructed on proper stick handling techniques and safety instruction.
The seventh and eighth grade students worked on adventure education, with the
emphasis on “challenge by choice.” In these activities, students learned the values of
teamwork and self-challenge. Great responsibility was given to the students as they were
taught how to belay, a technique that involves a team of at least three people, supporting
a climber as they climb the rock wall or any of the other climbing elements that the school
has. Many of the students who have had a fear of heights have been able to succeed as
they were able to go at their own pace up the wall or the climbing ropes. As classes
rotated out of the climbing unit, they participated in hockey, learning basic rules as well as
strategy using the spaces provided as well as did weight training in the weight room.
Science
Sixth grade science students are beginning their unit on DNA and genetics. Students are
creating Punnett Squares to determine probable percents of specific trait in an organism.
They will explore Punnett Squares via the computer using the Explore Learning program.
This program allows students to investigate the offspring of mice. Students will also
create large paper models of DNA. In a lab setting, they will extract DNA from
strawberries.
Seventh grade science continues their work with electrostatic theory. Within the
laboratory setting the students work with: electroscopes, electrostatic pendulums,
electrophoresis, Van de Graff generators, a Whimhurst machine, in addition to building
their own capacitor known as a Leyden Jar.
Eight grade science is finishing up physical properties of matter and bridging into
chemical properties. Mixtures and solutions are the final two concepts in physical
properties. We begin chemical properties with an introduction to the periodic table and
chemical reactions between metals and nonmetals. As we draw nearer to the Science
PSSA we are working through sample problems daily.
Social Studies
The sixth grade students are currently studying the physical and political geography of
Africa. The students will focus on the region in and around the Sahara while creating
songs, skits, or television commercials to demonstrate how people adapt to their
environment. The students will also focus on African colonialism, the current political
movements in North Africa, and the major problems faced by many African countries.
The seventh grade students are finishing up Manifest Destiny and will be studying the Era
of Reform with women's rights, abolitionism, and prison and hospital reform.
Eighth grade Social Studies has been using content reading techniques while examining
the causes and effects of the Persian Wars. Students, representing the Greek city-states,
are participating in various academic competitions, to see which city -state will win. The
students are comparing the forms of government in Ancient Greece to what is happening
in Egypt today.

In addition, some students are writing a 3 page research paper on a topic from Ancient
Greece. Student work has focused on quality internet and library research; paper layout,
(Intro, Body, and Conclusion) a supporting thesis statement with evidence from research,
and proper in-text citation methods.
Special Education
Currently, Mrs. Wilson’s seventh grade learning support math class is working on a unit
titled Stretching and Shrinking. The goal of the unit is for students to develop an
understanding of geometrical concepts, with a particular focus on congruent and similar
figures. By the end of the unit, students are able to create similar figures, determine if two
figures are similar, and predict the relationship between lengths and areas of similar
figures.
The students in the emotional support program have been working on strategies to assist
them with working cooperatively with their peers. The seventh and eighth grade students
have been working on time management as well.
The marking period just ended so it is time to progress monitor. The students who met
their IEP goals for the second marking period will be attending a field trip to the
Concordville Inn. The students will learn what it is like to work in the restaurant business
and will have the opportunity to create their own pizzas and enjoy them for lunch!
The eighth grade students have been participating in transition field trips to Penncrest.
This month they will have the opportunity to sit in on a class!
