OFFICE OF CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION
TO:
Members of the Board of School Directors
Mr. James M. Wigo, Superintendent of Schools
FROM:
Dr. Steve Taylor, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction
DATE:
November 8, 2012
RE:
November 8, 2012 Curriculum & Instruction Committee Meeting Minutes
Chairperson: Mr. Peter Barry
Board Members in Attendance: Peter Barry, Chris Guilday, John Hanna, Linda KinslerFox, Steve Miller, Liz Schneider
Also in Attendance: Eric Bucci, Anne Callahan, Grace Eves, Rick Gregg, Karen Meile,
Rachael Pinsley, Steve Taylor, Jim Wigo, and members of the community.
Update on the Responsive Classroom: Morning Meeting
Dr. Taylor introduced the Board to the concept of Morning Meeting, one aspect of the social
skills curriculum that goes under the title of The Responsive Classroom, which helps
students develop a social skills set that enables them to be successful in school and in life.
The Morning Meeting is a daily 15-20 minute activity in which students greet each other,
develop skills of speaking and listening, build a class identity, and begin to work on the
academic skills for the day. Following Dr. Taylor’s introduction and video excerpts of a 1st
grade and 5th grade Morning Meeting, Mrs. Meile and Miss Pinsley spoke about their
perspectives on the value of Morning Meeting. They reported seeing students developing
trust, responsibility, cooperation, empathy, and willingness to take academic risks in a safe
environment. To bolster their observations about the academic value of Morning Meeting,
Dr. Taylor shared a recent research study which found achievement gains on state
assessments for students whose schools consistently implemented the Responsive
Classroom approach. Morning Meeting occurs in every RTM elementary classroom every
morning.
Grade Point Average at Penncrest – Calculation and Distribution
Dr. Taylor and Mr. Gregg proposed revision of a Board action adopted on March 26, 2009
from the Penncrest Grading Committee. That Committee originally recommended, “That
class rank still be calculated by way of a weighted GPA, but not be made available until the
Junior year other than in extraordinary circumstances.” Currently, GPA and class rank are
calculated only once a year. The existing grading system will remain intact, but in order to
support the achievement of students, the current proposed resolution will request that GPA
and class rank be calculated twice a year, at the end of the first semester and the end of
the year—the only other option available within our student management system—and be
made available to students from 9th grade on. The Board gave permission for the
resolution to appear on the November Legislative agenda, but requests that Penncrest
gather data on the effects of the change and report back to the Board next year.
Keystone Exams
Mr. Gregg also updated the Board on the impending Keystone Exams, which will be given
in early December. Keystone Exams are end-of-course exams, and they are replacing the
11th Grade PSSA exams this year. In December, all 11th graders and any 9th or 10th
graders in Algebra II will take the Keystone Exam in Algebra, and all 11th graders will take
Keystone Exams in Biology and Literature. In the spring, 10th graders will take Keystone
Exams in Literature and Biology. Moving forward, our practice will be to have 10th graders
take Literature and Biology in the spring and have students take the Keystone Exam in
Algebra in the winter testing window of the year they take Algebra II.

2011/12 Audit - Pam Baker
Pam Baker reviewed the results of the June 30, 2012 local audit report. Net assets
increased in part as a result of an increase in the collection of delinquent taxes, which is
a trend that has been seen in other districts. Ms. Baker reviewed the District’s debt
position in comparison to other Districts. She indicated that the District’s debt ratio is
1.6-1 and anything under 3.4-1 indicates a strong position. The District carries debt over
a period of 10-12 years, whereas other districts carry debt over 20-25 years. The debt is
used to make improvements to our facilities, which adds to our net assets. Fund
balance for the general fund decreased by $1.1 million. The District has assigned a
portion of fund balance for future benefit expenditures and capital projects. The food
service fund had a loss of approximately $50,000, which is a trend that has been
experienced in other districts due to increase food costs and new nutrition requirements.
Ms. Baker issued an unqualified audit, which indicates that there were no findings or
misstatements. She recommends that the District setup an account for allowances for
accounts receivables due to outstanding items for tuition and fees for Elwyn by other
Districts.
Action: This item will be moved to the November 15 Legislative agenda for approval.

Natural Gas Buses
District buses travel approximately 1 million miles a year and transports 3,769 public
school students, 78 special need students and 1,118 private school students annually.
The District has the opportunity to improve efficiencies by converting buses to natural
gas vehicles. Johnson Controls estimates that the District can save approximately
$200,000 a year by converting 40 buses to natural gas. The EPA is offering grants of
up to $25,000 per bus for the conversion to natural gas or the purchase of new natural
gas buses. They require a minimum of five buses. The grant window opens December 1
and closes in February. The administration will further investigate the use of natural gas
buses.

Upcoming Board Policy Revision Work
Jim Wigo updated the Board of Directors on the policy revision work that is currently
underway. There are two policies that need to be revised and updated, and those are
the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and the Records Retention Policy. The AUP needs to
incorporate specific language regarding Internet Safety education, as well as remain
current with the amount of access to technology, students bringing in their own devices,
and higher instances of electronic communication between students and staff. The
Records Retention Policy currently in place needs updates on the retention timetable for
electronic records. Patti Linden will be bringing these updates to the Board in the near
future. She will also be bringing a new policy to the Board regarding Social Media. With
more and more educational uses for social media in classrooms, a policy pertaining to
its use will help to clearly define the roles and responsibilities, and guidelines and
parameters for all involved. This policy work will be ongoing.

GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten
Kindergarten will begin working with colors and color words in November. Students get an
opportunity to play color bingo and other “color” games. Additionally, we have recently
begun working on the lowercase alphabet. We will finish the month off with a unit on
Thanksgiving and other fall celebrations.
Grade 1
The first graders participated in their annual Thankful Feast. They invited special helpers
from our school to thank them for all of their hard work and dedication. Without those
special helpers, Glenwood wouldn’t be as wonderful of a place! The children brought in
food to be shared by all, sang songs about being thankful and appreciative and
expressed both verbally and in writing why they were thankful for each special guest.
Grade 2
Second graders participated in Community Day. Each class elected a town Mayor and
chose jobs for their class ‘town.’ They also carefully rehearsed and performed a play and
sang community songs for an enthusiastic audience. Additionally, second graders
celebrated a Friendly Feast together. They made their own butter from heavy cream to
use on homemade bread and biscuits.
Grade 3
Third graders, while participating in hands-on investigations into the science of
magnetism and electricity, also delved into the lives and accomplishments of a few
famous individuals whose inventions continue to impact our lives today. Through nonfiction reading, guided note-taking, and discussion, students discovered fascinating
information about the contributions of Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, and Lewis
Latimer to the study and use of electricity. Learning more about these men sometimes
required the comparison of two sources of information, such as an encyclopedia page
and a biography excerpt, using a Venn diagram. As students refined their non-fiction
reading and comprehension skills, they also came to understand that accomplished

inventors often tried many times before achieving success, and that their success was the
result of creativity, persistence, and hard work.
Grade 4
In November, the fourth grade will be continuing on with the next book for Reading
Workshop, Following Characters into Meaning. Students are getting excited about
reading, and we even had a 4th grader come up to us and say, “I didn’t like to read before,
but now I’m really starting to love it!” These words really exemplify the overall feeling of
the reading workshop excitement that is being felt by an increasing amount of students,
and for that, we are all very proud and excited! Our 4th graders have just completed their
first “personal narratives” and are moving onto our second book, Breathing Life into
Essays. During the month of November, Mrs. Omlor’s class and Mrs. Barry’s class are
entering our Ecosystems Science Unit which includes the study of living and non-living
things, including hands-on experience with fish, snails, crickets and pill bugs. As a
culminating activity to the Motion and Design unit, Mrs. Grace-Greens’ class has a special
visitor this week. Claire Kolmansberger’s grandfather, who was a science teacher at a
university, will come to facilitate our science experiments using scales, forces and
Newton’s Laws. During math, we are completing our unit on graphing and moving onto
multiplication and division.
Grade 5
In November, fifth graders took what they learned about author’s purpose to the next
level! They focused on bias and how that effects what authors choose to include in their
writing and the conclusions they present. Students looked at information about the
presidential candidates and saw how information about the same topic was presented
differently depending on who was writing the article. Students discussed ways to notice
bias and ways to try to find the truth.
AGP
Mr. G’s third grade classes will be designing and building scale models of our solar
system. Mr. G’s fourth grade classes will be exploring how to plan, film and edit a movie,
creating a short film reflecting criteria set by the American Film Institute. Mr. G’s fifth
grade classes will be writing and filming short puzzle segments to be part of an episode of
a television program they are developing.
Optimist Club
The Glenwood Jr. Optimist Club is a service organization of 12 fifth grade students who
joined the club because they like to help other people. At the first club meeting this year,
members planted 48 chrysanthemum plants which had been donated to the school by
local nurseries in honor of Glenwood’s 50th Anniversary. A group of very hard working
PTG Moms did the impressive work of digging 48 holes for the plants the day before the
club members planted them, so the beautification project was definitely a team effort. The
entrance into Glenwood and the rock out front are now both flanked with gorgeous
autumn blooms. The Jr. Optimist Club is sponsored by Mrs. Debra Taylor, School Nurse,
and the club was assisted by Glenwood’s green-thumbed art teacher, Mr. Keith Sharp.
PTG Book Fair
The Glenwood PTG sponsored a book fair in November. Students attended the book fair
during their regularly-scheduled library classes and bought great books at a 25%

discount. Parents also visited the fair and made many purchases for the holidays – great
timing, because “a book is a gift you can open again and again.”
Library
Glenwood library technician Kathy Cook participated in the first session of the 2012-13
Delaware County Book Review Program at Marple Newtown High School. Publishers
provide copies of brand new titles, and librarians may keep those books they review.
Mrs. Cook obtained fifteen recently-published titles for the Glenwood library, including
non-fiction, novels, and picture books valued at over $180.00.
INDIAN LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
First Grade
Our first graders have been learning about the life cycle of pumpkins. They have been
naming the stages and creating models depicting them. All of the first grade classes
participated in Pumpkin Day, a day when parent volunteers arrived to carve the classes’
different sized pumpkins. There was estimation prior to the big day, as students guessed
the weight, height, circumference and number of seeds in each pumpkin. As observers,
we looked at the patterns of the actual measurements and seed counting, done by
counting groups of ten. It was a surprise to learn that small pumpkins can have as many
seeds as the large ones!
Second Grade
In second grade we have been learning strategies to help us monitor as we read,
sounding out unknown words and stopping ourselves when something isn't right. We
tackled word problems in math, determining what operations to use, writing equations,
and solving for the answer. Small moments have been the focus during Writing
Workshop. We learned how to narrow broad story ideas into smaller and more detailed
stories, zooming in on the most important part and stretching out the details. We
worked in small groups in social studies to design our own communities that contained
what people need to live, work, play and solve problems. We have been busy!
Developmental Primary
This past month was an exciting one in Developmental Primary as our students went on a
trip to Linvilla Orchard, where they rode on a hayride, helped make candy apples, tasted
fresh donuts, and picked apples and pumpkins. In addition, our students met their new
high school buddies at Penncrest at a Halloween party. Students from the Child
Development classes at Penncrest helped Mrs. Schnaars' students to develop reading
and math Halloween stations for our kids to rotate through. They read The Great Pumpkin
and our students wrote letters to The Great Pumpkin as we are hoping it may visit Indian
Lane. Moreover, the students participated in science experiments and made seasonal
crafts with their 5th grade buddies here at Indian Lane Elementary School. Currently, we
are working on blending cvc words, adding money, counting to 100, and solving storming
problems. We also just began our introduction to the Pilgrims and designed our new
November hallway display.

Third Grade
In Reading Workshop, we continue talking a lot about and practicing strategies that great
readers use in an effort to become better readers. Some examples of the skills are
inferring, making predictions, and reading with expression, only to name a few. We have
also been talking about what to do when your book gets confusing. We have bookmarks
for what to do when you come to an unknown word, how to listen well, reading genres,
and strategies for reading stronger and longer. In Writing Workshop, students have been
working on several writing pieces this year, but they are most excited about and currently
writing their first personal narrative. These personal narratives are a “seed” of a story;
instead of telling the whole “watermelon” story, students choose a smaller “seed” moment
from the bigger picture. They will focus on zooming in on these seed ideas; adding
dialogue, setting, character thoughts and actions; writing a catchy lead; and making the
reader feel as if they are a part of the story. In Social Studies, we learned about the 50
states. We had a great time learning funny stories to help us remember where each state
is located. We will continue to practice our map skills using an atlas in the coming weeks.
In Science, we began our unit on Land and Water. We are learning about the three major
components of the water cycle: evaporation, precipitation and condensation. If you
haven’t already done so, take a few minutes to listen to the skit we performed titled, A
Water Cycle Adventure posted on our Blog Spot page, then post a comment. In
Investigations, we are working on place value, as well as adding and subtracting using
different strategies. During this unit, students have been solving addition problems with
2-digit numbers, and finding combinations of numbers that add to 100. In our math class,
we spend a lot of time discussing problems in depth and sharing our reasoning and
solutions.
Fourth Grade
In October fourth grade scientists zoom in on their observations skills with hand lenses
and microscopes. They discovered the tiny elements of microfiche, papers, and mystery
specimens. Live microorganisms will be arriving shortly. All the steps of the scientific
method were used to come to strong conclusions about what the specimens actually are
from their characteristics.
AGP
The Media and Indian lane AGP students finished their “Advertise Yourself” Unit this past
month. The students first analyzed what makes them unique. Next they developed a
product reflecting who they are. After that they construct a demo model of their product.
Then they produced a virtual advertisement for their product. Finally they presented their
product and advertisement to the class.
Library
The Birthday Book Club at Indian Lane raised over $1,000 for new library books. For a
donation of ten dollars, students select a book to donate to Indian Lane's library. The
book is designated with a special birthday name plate honoring the student who chose
the book. In addition, students receive a Birthday Book Club certificate and birthday
pencil. Pictures of students holding their book are taken and displayed on the bulletin
board at the library entrance and e-mailed to their parents. It's a great way to honor
student birthdays and support the library.

PTG Activities
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, the Indian Lane PTG Service Committee is hosting a Food
Drive for the Media Food Bank. The Food Bank is run by and out of the First United
Methodist Church in Media. Donations are running low, and the Food Bank are very
grateful to receive non-perishable items for the individuals and families it serves.
Donation containers are in the lobby for each grade level to donate. You can help Indian
Lane by shopping at Amazon.com. Just click on the Amazon.com link on our Indian Lane
home page and a percentage of your total Amazon.com order will be credited directly to
our school. This is an easy way to help earn extra money for Indian Lane. Movie Night is
a great family event run by the PTG where students have a direct input on which movie to
watch (selected a week ahead by voting) and then attend with their families for a night of
fun and healthy snacks. Our annual Holiday Extravaganza will be held on Saturday,
December 1, 2012. Breakfast will be served, and we have many activities planned for
this day. We pre-order and provide preassembled gingerbread houses, the icing, and
candy. Families can decorate them any way they would like. There will be a Kids’
Holiday Shop where children can buy inexpensive presents for their friends and family.
We also hope to be providing free wrapping of the gifts. Adults can also do some
shopping, as there will be vendors selling gifts, as well. Santa will be there, and children
can write letters to Santa and put them in his mailbox. Children can also learn and play a
fun game of dreidel. The PTG once again is collecting gently used winter coats, hats,
mittens and boots, diapers and other children’s clothing to be distributed to needy families
in our community through Cradles to Crayons and City Team.
Art
First graders are creating buildings out of shapes based on the book The Little House.
Second graders are reviewing Day of the Dead in honor of Mexico and their study of
countries around the world. Third graders are forming Egyptian necklaces and creating
patterns with beads. Fourth graders are embarking on a study of the Hudson River
School painters because they highlight various regions of the United States. Fifth graders
are creating a paper loom and weaving painted paper. They are reviewing the work of
local artist Paul Downing from the Wallingford Art Center.

MEDIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Distinguished Title 1 School
The PDE Division of Federal Programs honors Title 1 Schools making AYP for two or
more consecutive years. One hundred and thirteen Title 1 schools in the commonwealth
were selected for “distinguished” status including Media Elementary School. An additional
criteria of being among the top 25 performers in reading or math is also a determining
factor. Media met both criteria based on the overall performance of all students (202)
tested in reading, 93.6% of tested students were proficient or advanced. Kudos to the
Media staff.
I Make a Difference at Media Elementary School
A new tradition at our school is to recognize a staff or community member at each faculty
meeting and present him/her with an “I Make a Difference at Media Elementary School”
award. The first recipient was third grade teacher, Mrs. Sue Wiiliamson. Mrs. Williamson
visits all her students at their homes prior to the start of school each year. Her “and is
always up.” This year she chairs the social club, is a PTG rep, collected money at the
Harvest Fair, presented at a Title 1 event, and was instrumental in our transition to
Nativity School by assisting with room assignments and schedule changes. Her
generosity of spirit and time is essential to the vitality of our school. Congratulations, Mrs.
Williamson.
A “SANDY” Halloween
This year has been full of surprises and attendant adjustments and Halloween was no
different. We had to cancel our parade that was planned for Barrall Field and make new
plans for a fun day. A brief video posted on our website and on Media Patch
demonstrates that a good time was had by all.
School Spirit Day and a Day of Giving
We had a School Spirit Day where we asked students and staff to donate non-perishable
food items to The Media Food Bank. We also collected unwanted Halloween candy to
send to our troops. Both appeals got a good result. Our fifth graders, who are
experiencing a year of service, helped with the sorting and collecting of donations.
Mock Election
Media students cast their ballots on Monday, November 5. Our polls, manned by fifth
grade students, mirrored an authentic voting experience. Even the kindergarten students
were pleased to sign in and vote. Our results were 71% for Obama, 28% for Romney, and
1% for Big Bird (a write in). Thanks to Patrick Murphy, Hans Kalbach, Jackie Matusow,
and Evan O’Neill for planning the mock election.
Music News
Apples and energizers are the trends in first grade music class. We are learning to read
and play music on the staff and one of our favorite songs is Apple Tree. It uses three
notes, Sol, Mi and Do. We can write out the song and then perform it using
Boomwhackers. As part of our Responsive Classroom initiative, Mrs. Verdeur is teaching
various energizers not only in grade one, but across the grade levels. Among our

AGP at Media
The Media and Indian lane AGP students finished their “Advertise Yourself” Unit this past
month. The students first analyzed what makes them unique. Next they developed a
product reflecting who they are. After that they construct a demo model of their product.
Then they produced a virtual advertisement for their product. Finally they presented their
product and advertisement to the class. AGP Teacher Dennis Smyth is responsible for
creating several videos for us that were used at the October School Board Meeting and
posted on our web site and on Media Patch.
Kindergarten Fun
As part of our Language Arts unit, Down on the Farm, we took a wonderful field trip to
Milky Way Farm. The children experienced the day in the life of a working dairy farm. The
Matthews family welcomed us and gave us an educational, hands-on experience of how
they live and how our food and milk products get from their farm to our table
Grade 2 Update
Second grade students have begun preparations for Community Day. Each classroom is
in the process of preparing a three dimensional town and the citizens have elected a
mayor for their perspective towns. The program was held for parents in the SLMS
auditorium. The presentation will include songs, poems, and dialogue focused on
curriculum learned from the “Communities, Maps and Geography” social studies units.
Second grades participated in their first “Seed to Snack” presentation. Students got to
taste, describe and comment on different varieties of locally grown lettuce; spinach,
arugula and green lettuce. At the end of the session, a salad was prepared using each
lettuce type mixed with a balsamic dressing. The students enjoyed this tasty, healthy
treat! We consider ourselves very fortunate to once again have to opportunity to
participate in monthly “Seed to Snack” presentations this year.
Third Grade Report
Third graders wrapped up a unit on the systems of the human body with a field trip to
Lankaneau Hospital. Students had a very hands-on lesson with health and body systems.
Additionally, one of our parents who is a radiologist, came in to give a presentation on xrays, cat scans and the skeletal system.
Out first publishing parties of the year were held in our classrooms to celebrate writing
personal narratives.
Media Student Featured
Media fifth grade student, Justin Fitzgerald, had featured roles in two recent Media
Theatre productions, “The Three Little Pigs” and “Dr. Doolittle.” Justin’s role in “Dr.

ROSE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
First Grade
November has been an exciting month. We have celebrated as authors, sharing our
stories with our peers and beginning a new writing unit on pattern books. We have read
many mentor texts and identified several ways that authors use patterns to tell a story.
We also had a Thanksgiving Feast where all three classes invited families to share a
traditional dish from their country of origin. It was fun to taste foods from around the
world!
Third Grade
The third grade was busy working on writing personal narratives during the past several
weeks. They learned to write small moments. The students can tell the difference
between a large "watermelon topic" and a "small seed story". Our students have been
exposed to a variety of mentor texts to help craft good, strong leads and decisive writing.
Reading the published works of authors such as Ralph Fletcher and Kate DiCamillo,
provided excellent models to guide their work. All of the students were proud to display
published pieces of writing during their individual class celebrations.
Fifth Grade
Mrs. Clark’s class is learning about the layers of the atmosphere. They created detailed
maps of the atmosphere which are currently displayed in the fifth grade hall. Mr. Moore’s
class is learning about the election process. The class is learning about the Electoral
College and the struggle of certain groups to obtain the right to vote. Mrs. Van Zant’s
class has been studying about hurricanes and made their own vortices to explore what
causes hurricanes and tornadoes.
Physical Education
In November, first and second grade finished working on locomotor movement skills,
tagging and dodging skills, and practiced rolling, underhand and overhand throwing and
catching. Third and fourth grade focused on soccer and ball skills such as dribbling,
passing, trapping, kicking and shooting. They practiced skills for maintaining possession
of the ball and strategies for offense and defense. Fifth grade focused on football with
skills such as carrying, running, dodging, throwing, catching, passing and snapping. They
also practiced skills for maintaining possession of the ball and strategies for offense and
defense.
Academically Gifted Program
Mr. G’s third grade classes designed and constructed scale models of our solar system.

Ms. Sycz’ grade eight students are continuing to demonstrate an understanding of the
elements and principles of design as they add color to their design compositions.
Students had analyzed "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci earlier will now look at
some contemporary artists’ work noticing how the artists created their compositions.
Grade seven students are now adding color to their portraits preparing to represent
atmospheric perspective by adding now bright colors in the foreground. Students have
colored the face in a base coat preparing the area for shading. Grade six students are
finishing adding oil pastels to their leaf compositions having decided upon a color
scheme. Students are arranging those colors with the help of the principles of design.
Mrs. Going’s eighth grades are beginning their unit on the magnificent art of The
Illuminated Manuscripts from the Middle Ages in Europe. Students will enjoy a
presentation of slides of many actual Manuscripts to help understand the importance of
the artist's portion of these handmade books. Students will develop their own original
page using meaningful paragraphs, personal favorite poems, quotes, or portions of

songs. The history component as well as the artistic component will work together for the
students during this unit. Seventh grades will kick off all classes beginning their ceramic
unit at SLMS! Students will learn about the art of the fish and its role as a subject in
sculpture and paintings. Students will proceed with the original design of a fish in motion
on an environment. Let the challenges begin! Sixth grades will continue to put their
energy towards the new unit of an original; Metal Repousse Mask, or tooled metal mask.
Students had to brainstorm a list together using the prompt, “What is the purpose of a
Mask?" Students will continue to work with the Principles of Design showing Balance,
Unity and Pattern as well as the Elements of Design using, Line, Shape and Texture to
complete this assignment.
Mrs. Prior’s sixth graders utilized the elements of line, shape, form, and space along with
one-point perspective to create various scenes. Now they are using the elements of
value, color, and texture to complete their drawings in color. Seventh graders are focusing
on analogous, complementary, and monochromatic color schemes while creating depth
and dimensionality in their drawings through the use of color. Eighth graders have
completed the difficult task of drawing various scenes of the school in two-point
perspective. They are embarking on the use of light and shade and blending to render
their drawings in color. All students will review pertinent terms, techniques, and methods
of drawing in written assessments of their work.
Guidance
As the school year gets into full swing, the guidance department is working to help
students be successful. Counselors began organizational help with both individual and
groups of students. Mrs. Harrison, sixth grade counselor, has met individually with over
one hundred sixth graders and will continue to meet with members of the sixth grade
class. Sixth graders participated in a lesson on support systems and were asked to think
about the support systems the school offers and what they can do to expand their support
systems. Counselor support groups are forming in all three grades. The topics of these
groups are family issues and social skills for sixth grade, and family issues and coping
skills for seventh and eighth graders. Also, as part of the Student Achievement Team,
counselors made referrals to the various support programs offered at Springton Lake to
help struggling students. Students have been assigned to programs to help assist them
with work completion during the first marking period.
Library
Students continue to learn about the research process in all grade levels and across
various subjects. For example, eighth grade Social Studies classes have been visiting
the library to work on their research projects. The students have been using the Social
Studies LibGuides as they conduct research in the Library Mac Lab. Also, Mrs.
Somerville’s sixth grade AGP classes learned how to write an outline while conducting
research. Other classes, including Miss Levy’s eighth grade Health, sixth grade Social
Studies and Language Arts, and Mrs. Hemenway’s Life Skills classes visited the library to
conduct research, discover new books to read, and enjoy library read-aloud times. The
fall Jabberwocky Book Fair was held November 12-16 during American Education Week,
with family evening hours Tuesday and Wednesday night. Students visited the library
with their Language Arts classes.

Math
Geometry classes are finishing Chapter 3 in which students write and graph equations of
lines and prove lines parallel and perpendicular. Students will also be presenting projects
about famous mathematicians. We will be moving on to Chapter 4 in mid-November. In
this chapter the students will classify triangles, find measures of angles of triangles,
identify congruent figures, and prove triangles congruent. They will also use theorems
about isosceles and equilateral triangles.
Eighth graders continued their study of the Connected Math book, “Moving Straight
Ahead,” during October. Students became familiar with the basic slope-intercept equation
(y=mx+b) and practiced interpreting its components in order to create graphs, determine
the point of intersection shared by two equations, predict trends and patterns and apply
the model to “real-life” situations. These situations included constant motion problems and
business applications. This strong foundation with algebraic skills promotes success with
high-school level math.
In the new seventh grade algebra class, we are exploring different types of equations:
one-step, two-step, and multi-step. We are perfecting our skills of combining like-terms
and using the distributive property to simplify complex equations. Also, we have been
creating algebraic equations from word problems that model real-life situations. We
continue to explore absolute value, percentages, and inequalities. In seventh grade
math, we spent the first half of the month completing the review of area and perimeter,
using our book Comparing and Scaling. We utilized self-created strategies as well as
formulas that we derived through experiments to find area and perimeter of quadrilaterals
and parallelograms. We also learned some catchy songs that helped us remember the
formula for finding area and circumference of a circle! After completing that unit, we've
explored data relationships in the book Variables and Patterns. We have created
coordinate graphs and translated the information into data tables, and vice versa. This
exploration of data and variables will continue throughout the school year as well as help
us out in our science classes! In seventh grade accelerated math, we began exploring
variables and identifying where they are present in a data table, coordinate graph, and a
linear equation. After mastering concepts of linear relationships, we began looking at nonlinear relationships. We did a "bridge breaking" experiment which helped us identify how
the breaking weight of a bridge is related to the thickness of the bridge beams. We found
that our hypotheses were correct - the thicker the beams, the more weight a bridge will
hold. Since this exciting experiment, we have looked at different types of non-linear
relationships and identified the patterns of change in the variables. We continue to
analyze relationships: linear, non-linear, and coming soon: inverse variation!
The sixth grade heterogeneous mathematics class is focusing on mastering the concepts
of prime and composite numbers. The students are working to have a stronger
knowledge of the relationship among factors, multiples, divisors and products. As a class
we have experimented to determine these relationships and how whole numbers are
classified. We have started developing a variety of strategies for solving mathematical
problems such as building models, masking lists and tables, drawing diagrams, and
solving simpler problems. The sixth grade accelerated mathematics class is discovering
what it means when two figures are similar and what makes them similar. By creating our
own stretching tools, made from two rubber bands, the class was able to take a figure and

enlarge it from its original size. With this new information, the students have compared
the characteristics of the original figure with the new figure. Geometric shapes we have
been working with include polygons, triangles, and rectangles. The students have
measured corresponding sides and corresponding angles of each figure as evidence of
the figures being similar. Our unit will end by taking our knowledge, of similar rectangular
and triangular measurements, and applying it to develop a technique for indirect
measurement.
Music
The Eighth Grade Band at SLMS displayed their costumes and musicianship as they
performed with the Penncrest Band for the annual Media Halloween Parade. They will
also participate in the festivities for Rose Tree Elementary Halloween Parade on the
school grounds. Their next performance is the upcoming Veteran’s Day activities at the
courthouse in Media. Speaking of performances, SLMS is diligently practicing for these
future concerts: Sixth Grade Chorus and Choice Voices Winter Concert – December 4 –
7:30 PM at SLMS, Seventh Grade Chorus and Select Chorus Winter Concert –
December 11 – 7:30 PM at SLMS, Eighth Grade Chorus and Select Chorus Winter

Orchestras and Honors Strings Winter Concert – December 17 – 7:30 PM at PHS
Sixth Grade Orchestra/Band/Jazz Lab Winter Concert –December 18 – 7:30 PM at SLMS
Seventh Grade General Music rang hand chimes to “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” and
“Minuet,” tapped cotton balls to “Sheep May Safely Graze,” and wrote scary stories to
“Toccatta” as they correlated a variety of activities with the music and history of Johann
Sebastian Bach. Continuing an historical perspective, the Eighth Grade General Music
Classes are performing original chants and music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Science
Six grade science students are currently learning about cells. They will observe plant and
animal cells using the microscope to identify their parts and compare and contrast the
two. Students will dissect a virtual cell. They will also read about cells in the new science
textbook. Current electricity is the flow of electrons. This concept is explored in the
seventh grade science curriculum. Simple circuits are constructed using batteries,
switches, test leads, light bulbs, motors, and voltmeters. The students collect data based
on the strength of their batteries. This lays the foundation to more complex circuit
building.
The eighth grade science department is experimentally determining the variables which
affect thermal expansion, and have written formulas to calculate the change in size, and
the new length of an object due to temperature change!
Social Studies
The Social Studies Department taught their classes about UNICEF and distributed the
UNICEF boxes to be used for the collection. In addition the Department and the Debate
Club have organized a mock Presidential election. The students registered to vote in the
cafeteria during lunches and then the entire student body voted in the auditorium during
social studies classes. The students voted individually in “booths” to create the feel of a
real election.

The sixth grade students have been learning about East Asian geography, with a special
emphasis on Mt. Everest. The students read about 13 year-old Jordan Romero who
became the youngest climber to reach the summit in 2010 and watched the dangers of
the mountain unfold in the Imax film that inspired the book Into Thin Air. The study of Mt.
Everest culminated with a simulated climb in the gym and students writing a journal entry
about their “climb” to the summit. The students have started studying the outcomes of
World War II in East Asia, including the start of the Cold War. The seventh grade
students are studying the Bill of Rights and completing a project on court cases related to
the rights.
Special Education
Mr. Henderson’s sixth grade learning support math program has continued their work in
the Connected Math Program. We have started the second unit titled “Prime Time”.
Throughout this unit, the students learn how to calculate factors, multiples, greatest
common factor, and least common multiple. These concepts are taught to the students
through highly motivating games such as “The Factor Game” and “The Product Game”.
As the students proficiently grasp these concepts, an application piece is introduced. The
students are presented with word problems which they must use greatest common factor
or least common multiple to solve them.
Ms. Bendistis’s eighth grade special education language arts are completing their study of
the mystery unit. The unit started with mystery book talks by Ms. Brashers. After a
discussion of the elements of a mystery, the students self-selected an independent
reading mystery novel. They completed book brags to demonstrate their ability to identify
the elements of the mystery genre. We read short stories from the genre including Eager
Allen Poe's "Tell Tale Heart." The students are in the process of writing their own mystery
stories...they are having a lot of fun with this assignment. In Ms. Bendistis’s resource
class, the students are working on developing strategies to assist them improve their time
management and work completion skills. The students also practice for the reading,
writing, science, and mathematics PSSA's.
We start every class period with a review of the agenda, essential questions, daily edit,
journal, and conversation topic of the day. We close each period with a thought of the day
and we answer the essential questions. Once a week, we read an article from a local
newspaper and participate in a socratic seminar where the students practice answering
and asking higher order thinking questions (HOTS).
World Language
The Springton Lake World Language students and teachers alike are anxiously awaiting
the arrival of the French exchange students to Penncrest High School. Springton's
teachers will help chaperon some of the exciting events planned for them as well as
attend the Covered Dish hosted by the parents of our students so that our French friends
can experience a traditional Thanksgiving dinner a few weeks early.
Physical Education
All physical education students completed their fall fitness tests. Students were also able
to set personal goals for the school year in regards to what they viewed as important in
terms of their individual fitness goals. In addition to goal setting, students wrote about
how a high level fitness can improve their overall quality of life and how the fitness tests

World Language News
Although delayed by hurricane Sandy, our French exchange students finally arrived early
this month. The students from Avignon, France spent a day shadowing their American
partners in classes. They also attended Penncrest French classes giving all PHS
students who currently take French a chance to interact with our visitors. In addition, the
exchange students participated in two field trips with their PHS partners traveling to
Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland. The much-anticipated annual covered dish
dinner to celebrate the exchange was also held this month. The 29 French high school
students and their hosts returned home mid-month. It was a very exciting and
enlightening two weeks for our students and their visitors. Penncrest students will travel
to Southern France in April 2013.
Members of the World Language Honor Society are selling fair trade items from the Equal
Exchange catalog as a fund-raiser for the Phyllis Kavanaugh Scholarship. Fair trade
items include coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa, wrapping paper, scarves, bath and body
items, housewares, etc. The fundraiser runs until November 21.

The health and physical education department congratulates all the Penncrest students
who achieved Presidential status in recent fitness testing during PE classes. Many
students achieved their "personal best" mile times.
Music Department News
Early in the month, the Penncrest Roaring Lions Marching Band captured their second
consecutive PA Group V-A State Championship title in the USBands Association. The
band concluded its fall season with performances at Tyler Arboretum's Pumpkin Days,
the Media Halloween and Veteran's Day parades, and their fall concert.
Also in November, the Penncrest Band hosted its annual Holiday Craft Show at the high
school. Thousands of community members attend each year to kick off their holiday
shopping with over 130 vendors selling their wares. Band members provide live music,
lunch service, childcare, and assist the crafters with setting up and cleaning up at the end
of the day. Proceeds from the event benefit the Penncrest Band.

The Penncrest Choirs moved into their busy winter performance season in November.
The Ambassador Choir performed at The National Honor Society induction ceremony;
several choir students were among those honored. The Concert Choir performed for the
Lion's Paw senior citizen luncheon. The students, as always, were well received and
gave our visitors a preview of the holiday season. Also in November, two of our students
qualified to audition for the Pennsylvania Music Educator Association District Choir. This
prestigious choir requires rigorous independent study and auditions are quite intense.
Choir Director, Sherre Gaertner, invites all members of our Board of School Directors to
attend any of our concerts this season. Our events are posted on Penncrest’s web
calendar. If you plan to attend, please let Mrs. Gaertner know so she can recognize you
at the concert. The students and parents always appreciate your presence.
JV Show
The Class of 2014 presented its annual Junior Varity Show in November. This year's JV
Show theme was "With You." Over 130 students participated in the mostly student-led
production working on the show for eight weeks creating comedy, dance, and musical
acts. This year, the students also choreographed the dance opening and closing
numbers. The student production team included Angela Anastasi, Luke Burdsall, Brittany
Kashner, and Alicia Schapire. Robin Heckman and Dave Miller served as faculty
producers. The JV Show is the primary fundraiser for the Junior Class each year and is
one of the most anticipated events of the entire school year.
National Honor Society Induction
The National Honor Society inducted new junior and senior members this month. The
new members were selected based on their outstanding character, scholarship,

Whereas, the bridge reconstruction has been fully
funded by the financial cooperation of Media Borough,
the County of Delaware and the Commonwealth of
