Superintendent’s Message
Dear Families,
It’s been a great opening to our school year! Our 12-month
employees did a beautiful job cleaning and preparing our
buildings and grounds for opening day! Our first greeters
of students are our bus drivers, office staff and food service
workers. They were all excited to welcome our students back.
Our teachers have done a wonderful job of building classroom
environments that positively impact student learning from the
very first day! We have such an amazing staff and I have no
doubt that it is going to be a year of incredible learning!
During my travels throughout the community during the summer, the number
one question that I have been asked is about the timeline on our two bond projects
(Enumclaw High School and Black Diamond Elementary School). The school year

2015-2016 will be a year of planning and permitting with not much visibly occurring
on the two sites. Beginning next summer, you will begin to see demolition followed
by construction.
The Enumclaw High School project will be constructed in phases occurring
during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years. Students will remain on the site
in existing and portable classrooms.
The Black Diamond Elementary School project will be constructed during
the 2016-2017 school year. Students who attend Black Diamond Elementary will be
housed at J.J. Smith Elementary School during the year of construction.
Below are graphic representations of the timelines for both projects.
In partnership with you,
Mike

A playwright suffering from writer’s block, imagines the characters from his next
play while he struggles to deal with the “real” people in his life: his beautiful neighbor
and his monstrous mother. Soon the imaginary and reality combine into
a ridiculous farce! Guaranteed laughs!

Summer School Program
Westwood students participating in the summer reading program had a “blast” studying volcanoes in
August. Students practiced using their research and reading comprehension skills to become volcanologists.
The two week session ended with a bang as the group set off baking soda and vinegar volcanoes!
Thank you to staff who worked to make the summer program a wonderful success.
Jeff has spent several days last school year partnering with teachers from each of
our middle schools and Enumclaw High School, providing strategies for the effective use of digital tools and content to help student learning in the classroom. In
addition, Jeff has provided training for our building administrators and time with
our school board members. In late August, Jeff spent time with the EHS teaching
staff to help them learn ways to incorporate teaching strategies with students, using
online tools and content.
Jeff will continue to provide on-site training for teachers from across our system
this school year as we bring Chromebook devices into fifteen of our secondary
classrooms and as we prepare to provide a student Chromebook device to all students in grades 8, 9, and 10 in the 2016-17 school year.
We look forward to the ways that we can expand our use of these tools to help all
students gain the skills necessary to be successful and to leave our system with the
skills for a successful transition to college and/or career.
Jeff Utecht will be presenting at the Annual State of Education Address and Soup
Supper on January 14th, 2016! Mark your calendars now as you won’t want to
miss this opportunity to witness Jeff’s engaging presentation and real-life examples
of using technology for success.
