THE ECSU FOUNDATION The Elizabeth City State University Foundation (“The Foundation”) is a nonprofit organization incorporated on February 3, 1971 under the laws of the state of North Carolina. The Foundation’s purpose is to provide financial assistance to students of Elizabeth City State University, to facilitate fundraising efforts on behalf of the university, and to serve as an advocate for the ECSU community at large. The Foundation is the single member of the Elizabeth City State University Housing Foundation, LLC (Housing Foundation) and is a limited liability company formed in North Carolina on December 20, 2002. Its purpose is to further the charitable purposes of the Foundation and to construct housing facilities for use by ECSU students. Our ECSU In 1891, Representative Hugh Cale sponsored House Bill 383 in the North Carolina General Assembly for the purpose of “teaching and training teachers of the colored race to teach in the common schools of North Carolina.” From its humble beginning, the first president, Peter W. Moore, expanded enrollment from 23 to 355 students and the faculty from 2 to 15 during his tenure. Today, the mission of Elizabeth City State University is to promote economic, social, and environmental progress for the people of northeastern North Carolina, the state, and the nation.
