THE ECSU FOUNDATION
The Elizabeth City State University Foundation
(“The Foundation”) is a nonprofit organization
incorporated on February 3, 1971 under the laws
of the state of North Carolina. The Foundation’s
purpose is to provide financial assistance to
students of Elizabeth City State University, to
facilitate fundraising efforts on behalf of the
university, and to serve as an advocate for the
ECSU community at large. The Foundation is
the single member of the Elizabeth City State
University Housing Foundation, LLC (Housing
Foundation) and is a limited liability company
formed in North Carolina on December 20, 2002.
Its purpose is to further the charitable purposes of
the Foundation and to construct housing facilities
for use by ECSU students.
Our ECSU
In 1891, Representative Hugh Cale sponsored
House Bill 383 in the North Carolina General
Assembly for the purpose of “teaching and
training teachers of the colored race to teach in
the common schools of North Carolina.” From
its humble beginning, the first president, Peter
W. Moore, expanded enrollment from 23 to 355
students and the faculty from 2 to 15 during
his tenure. Today, the mission of Elizabeth City
State University is to promote economic, social,
and environmental progress for the people of
northeastern North Carolina, the state, and the
nation.
