At the end of class the day before this lesson, ask students to give you some examples of safe and unsafe things they have seen at home, school, or work. You will need to budget 10-15 minutes for this discussion. 2. Teacher should locate (3) MSDS sheets for materials used in their class from company websites to show students during the PowerPoint presentation (slide 27). NOTE: This lesson is intended to cover all of the basics on general safety that may be run into in any classroom. It is NOT intended to be a replacement for the machine specific safety tests you must administer in a manufacturing lab situation. References: 1. Writing utensils for students who don’t have any NOTE: Use the 85 question test bank to create your own 50 question Pre-Test and Final Test. Pick at least 15 different ones for each. You have been given both text and Examview version of the test bank. Most school districts now have Examview available for free use for their instructors. Just “Google” “Examview free” if you don’t have it already. You can generate multiple tests much quicker using this than by traditional hand. Equipment Needed: 1. Data projector for PowerPoint 2. Class set of printout hard copies for students to use 3. Computer with internet access Learner Preparation: The day before beginning this lesson, the teacher should ask students to give some examples of safe and unsafe things they have seen at home, school, or work. The teacher will need to budget 10-15 minutes for this discussion. Introduction Introduction (LSI Quadrant I): NOTE: The class discussion is meant to be Socratic in nature and not true/false, or this is the only correct answer. Encourage your students to explain WHY they think the way they do! There is NO wrong answer if they can explain the WHY! Before Day #1: ASK: Can anyone give me some good examples of safety? It can be at home, school, or even work. Allow enough time for input so that every student gives an example. ASK: Can anyone give me some bad examples of safety? It can be at home, school, or even work. Allow Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved. 4 enough time for input so that every student gives an example. SAY: Tomorrow we will be taking a Safety 101 Pre-Test to see what you actually know about safety. Don’t panic it’s just a pre-assessment. I just want to know where you are at with your knowledge of safety. So think about what we just discussed and be ready for it tomorrow. Day #1: SAY: Today we will be taking a Safety 101 Pre-Test to see what you actually know about safety. Don’t panic it’s just a pre-assessment. I just want to know where you are at with your knowledge of safety. So think about what we just discussed. ASK: Has anyone come up with any new safety examples? Allow enough time for input so that every student gives an example. SAY: Okay, now I need for you to each quietly and independently take the pre-test. Once you are done with it you will begin to work on either the ABC Review or Activity Mat handout. You will use the Safety 101 PowerPoint to get your answers or the internet. Tomorrow we will go over the Safety 101 PowerPoint together in class. SAY: (At the end of class) Tomorrow we will go over the Safety 101 PowerPoint together in class. Be prepared to give me some examples (good or bad) that you have seen for each of the Safety 101 Facts we will cover in the PowerPoint. Day #2: SAY: Today we will go over the Safety 101 PowerPoint together in class. Be prepared to give me some examples (good or bad) that you have seen for each of the Safety 101 Facts we will cover in the PowerPoint. ASK/SAY/SHOW: The Safety 101 PowerPoint - ask for at least two examples for every fact. Allow enough time for input so that every student gives an example. Make sure you call on all students at least twice throughout the whole presentation. SAY: Now, to prepare for the final test tomorrow, take the online study guide practice test. It covers all 85 questions that COULD be on the test. Only 50 will be on the real test. Day #3: SAY: Today you will take the Final Safety 101 Test. ASK: Can anyone tell me why 100% is considered passing for this unit? ANSWER: Because it means you leave with all 10 fingers. ASK: What do you do if you don’t make 100%? ANSWER: Test correction. For every question missed you must write it, write the correct answer, and explain why it is that you missed it on the test. Then you can receive full credit for it. SAY: Good luck and do your best. Once you are done make sure the ABC Review or Activity Mat handouts have been completed and turned in today for grading. NOTE: Depending on your classes you may find that they need 2 days to go over the Safety 101 PPT and complete the handouts. Adjust the days to meet the needs of your classes. Also, be prepared for some teachers to complain because the kids are pointing out safety violations. Especially the taping down of electrical cords. Outline Outline (LSI Quadrant II): Instructors can use the PowerPoint presentation, slides, handouts, and note pages in conjunction with the following outline. MI Outline Notes to Instructor Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved. 5 Can anyone give me some good examples of safety? It can be at home, school, or even work. Day 1 - Socratic discussion on rather or not it is a good example or not. Allow enough time for input so that every student gives an example. II. Can anyone give me some bad examples of safety? It can be at home, school, or even work. Day 1 - Socratic discussion on rather or not it is a bad example or not. Allow enough time for input so that every student gives an example. III. Take the Pre-Test Day 1 - This is just to find out where your kids are safety wise. I. NOTE: There are 85 questions. You may want to randomly pick 50 of these for your Pre-Test and then Final Test. For students who have IEPs, you can adjust the number to reflect what is required for that. For example, if you have 1 student who does 50% of what regular student does, that child only takes 25 question test and in which you can hand pick from the 85 questions what you know is in his/her knowledge base. IV. Complete the ABC Review or Activity Mat activities/handouts Day 1 - This is a review process for them. Both are based in CRISS and RTI practices. I offer them a choice so they have more ownership. V. Go over the Safety 101 PowerPoint Day 2 - Socratic discussion, no answer is considered wrong so long as the student can explain WHY they feel that way about it and support it with facts. Allow enough time for input so that every student gives at least two examples. Teacher should show 3 MSDS sheets on materials they use in their class to students when talking about slide Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved. 6 #27. VI. Take the Final Safety 101 Test – 50 questions NOTE: There are 85 questions. Day 3 - This is a traditional written assessment, but it requires 100% to PASS. They can do test correction for every question missed. They must write it, write the correct answer, and explain why it is that they missed it on the test. Then they can receive full credit for it. Copy and paste Multiple Intelligences Graphic in appropriate place in left column. Verbal Linguistic Logical Mathematical Visual Spatial Musical Rhythmic Bodily Kinesthetic Intrapersonal Interpersonal Naturalist Existentialist Application Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Go through the PowerPoint and have Socratic style class discussion about the information in it and what they think/feel. No answer is wrong if they can explain WHY. Explain the Pre-Test as being a way for the teacher to assess the students’ current knowledge on safety. Show students how to start the ABC Review or Activity Mat handouts (they may choose which one). Have the students take Final Safety 101 Test and explain the importance of 100% accuracy. Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): 1. Take the Pre-Test 2. Complete the ABC Review or Activity Mat handout 3. Take and pass with 100% accuracy the Safety 101 Test 4. For every question missed students must write it, write the correct answer, and explain why it is they missed it on the test. Then they can receive full credit for it.
