My main reason for pursuing a job in the public sector is to secure a position where
my skills, education, interests, and commitment would be of value. I want to pursue a
highly rewarding career, rewarding not in a financial sense, but rather in the sense of
being personally challenging both intellectually and morally. I am anxious to face
difficult assignments that carry responsibility and allow me to show off my potential. I
am also determined to find a job that provides satisfaction and self-development and
helps me achieve personal as well as organizational goals. My previous academic interest
in business administration, my work background, experience as a volunteer, and
knowledge from becoming an Eagle Scout has lead me to pursue a position where I can
be a productive and active worker in a public or non-profit environment. I look forward
to learning new things as I pursue my career and challenging myself by taking leadership
roles whenever given the opportunity.
When I was young and had just entered the Boy Scout program, I was the only
boy to be put in a leadership role at such a young age. I was in charge of my entire patrol
and often times the Troop as a whole, mostly on campouts and international trips. I was
also heavily involved in community service projects and fundraisers for an array of local
partners. As I grew older, I began working for a local retirement community where I had
been quickly promoted and given more hours and interaction with our residents than any
other part-time employee at that time. After spending a few years in college, I then did
some volunteer work for a non-profit organization in Delaware to further develop my
knowledge and also participated in a management internship with Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Both of these positions gave me great experience in volunteer work, customer
service/interaction, daily business operations, continuous improvements in technology
and innovation, and personal and professional development. It was after college that I
realized I wanted to change my perspective and focus on management and leadership in
the public sector.
As a graduate student at the University of Delaware, I am eager to pursue a
challenging internship in the government or non-profit sector that utilizes my diverse
background. This would not only help me to further my educational interests, but also
identify in which area of public service I could be of most value. One of my interests in
the public sector is management and leadership. While working towards my
undergraduate degree in business administration, in one of my leadership courses I had
the opportunity to partner with Survey Monkey through a grant from the Jackson
Foundation. The partnership allowed us to compile research findings from different
cultures (China, United States, Japan, and Germany) and compare overconfidence,
humility and leadership. We then organized our data into a presentation and presented the
research findings at the McDonough Leadership Conference in Marietta, Ohio. This
experience is a testament to my interest in identifying different leadership and
management styles in government, and in particular, non-profit positions.
