Lecture 18

No computers today
Today is the last day for the CS session for this
group. Mingle during classtime on Friday. No
class on Monday; no final exam.
Good news, those that submitted Homework 3
by 10pm yesterday have earned an A or A- for
the CS session which is 1/3 of the grade for
ENGR/CS 101. :-) Hopefully the rest will do so,
too. Graded programs will be available at the
mingle on Friday.

Anonymity vs. Privacy



On-line anonymity: identity is not known
Pros and cons of anonymous access?
Most people really want privacy: private
information is not associated with identity.


E.g., Right to vote without fear of public judgment.
When might private information need to be
made public?

3
Internet and Privacy

Basically, there is no privacy (or anonymity).
Posting on a public website is like writing on
a public wall.



At the very least, IP address usually is recorded.
More information, if logged in.
Worse, the 'Net never forgets. Once the bits
go out, someone will have made a copy. You
can never find and delete all copies. This
includes pictures, responses to postings, etc.

Internet and Privacy

Conclusion: Don't post anything you wouldn't
want everyone else to know about you now
or in the future.

Rutgers Social Networking
PSA


What about social networking sites?
Rutgers University made a PSA about
social networking


Lecture 18
What are the points being made by this PSA?
Why do you think Rutgers University thinks it is
necessary to show this PSA to all incoming
freshmen?

Social Networking and Privacy


How many are on Facebook? I positively
identified 16 out of 22. I now know things like
Frannie was a lifeguard, Elizabeth was 2014
Girls Tennis State runner up, and Aldo plays the
guitar.
Do your "friends" write messages to your
wall/timeline or post pictures that have you
tagged? What happens if I become one of their
friends?

Facebook Terms of Use


For content that is covered by intellectual property rights,
like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give
us the following permission, subject to your privacy and
application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive,
transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide
license to use any IP content that you post on or in
connection with Facebook (IP License). This IP License
ends when you delete your IP content or your account
unless your content has been shared with others, and
they have not deleted it.
I.e., they can do anything they want with your
information.

Social Networking and Privacy




Companies now scour social media sites as
part of background checks.
Employers ask for passwords as a term of
employment.
Can they really do this?
Conclusion: Be very careful about what you
post and share on social media sites.

The "Cloud" and Privacy



What about cloud and other on-line services?
Cloud and other on-line services are just
computers controlled by other people. Some
are less secure than others.
Celebrity nude photos


Hacked file storage on Apple iCloud backup
servers
Note that the file transfers were automatic.
