Introduction/Engage
Initiate a class discussion by asking each student to give one example of a
career in the Manufacturing Career Cluster without repeating another
student’s response.

Tool and Die Maker - analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and
operates machine tools; fits and assembles parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools,
jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools
CNC Machine Tool Programmer - operates computer-controlled machines or robots to
perform one or more machine functions on metal or plastic work pieces
Assembler - has the responsibility for assembling an entire product or component of a
product
Welder - uses hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal
components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products
Industrial Production Manager - plans, directs, or coordinates work activities and
resources necessary for manufacturing products in accordance with cost, quality, and
quantity specifications
Structural Metal Fabricator - fabricates, positions, aligns, and fits parts of structural
metal products
Machinist - sets up and operates a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts
and instruments
Manufacturing Engineering Technician - develops tools; implements designs; or
integrates machinery, equipment, or computer technologies to ensure effective
manufacturing processes
Industrial Engineer - designs, develops, tests, and evaluates integrated systems for
managing industrial production processes, including human work factors, quality control,
inventory control, logistics and material flow, cost analysis, and production coordination
Industrial Designer - develops and designs manufactured products, such as cars,
home appliances, and children’s toys
Millwright - installs, dismantles, or moves machinery and heavy equipment according to
layout plans, blueprints, or other drawings
Expediting - coordinating and expediting the flow of work and materials within or
between departments of an establishment according to production schedule
Robotics Technician - builds, installs, tests, or maintains robotic equipment or related
automated production systems
Inspector - inspects, tests, sorts, samples, or weighs nonagricultural raw materials or
processed, machined, fabricated or assembled parts or products for defects, wear, and
deviations from specifications
Quality Control Manager - plans, directs, or coordinates quality assurance programs;
formulates quality control policies and control quality of laboratory and production efforts
Forklift Operator - operates industrial trucks or tractors equipped to move materials
around a warehouse, storage yard, factory, construction site, or similar location
Cost Estimator - prepares cost estimates for product manufacturing, construction
projects, or services to aid management in bidding on or determining price of product or
service

19. Industrial Safety and Health Engineer - plans, implements, and coordinates safety
programs, requiring application of engineering principles and technology, to prevent or
correct unsafe environmental working conditions

facility
21. Maintenance Worker - performs work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or
craft occupations to keep machines, mechanical equipment, or the structure of an
establishment in repair
22. Bearing - support surface for rotating or moving of a shaft or arm
23. Resistance - the act of opposing movement
24. Trial - a test to examine a set of conditions
25. Axle - a bar or rod that wheels rotate on
26. Wheel - a round disk centered on an axle
27. Drift - the distance from the center line of the test ramp to the center line of the test
vehicle when it stops
28. Direction of Drift - the drift to the right or left of the centerline
29. Expedite - to accelerate the process or progress
30. Distribution - the act of giving or delivering something to people
31. Inventory - a supply of goods that are stored in a place
32. Schedule - a written or printed list of things and the times when they will be done
33. Work Order - a commission to purchase, sell, or supply goods, or to perform work
34. Inventory Control - the supervision of supply, storage, and availability of an item
35. Assembly Line - an organized set of machines, tools, and workers that assemble a
product in a series of operations
36. Computer Numeric Control - the control of a machine using a computer program
37. Plan - a drawing developed to show the size and shape of a product
38. Specification - a description of requirements to produce an item
39. Work Cell - an arrangement in a factory to improve the quality, production processes,
and time
40. Sorting - dividing into kinds, classifications, or types
41. Testing - examining the part to obtain quality, working order, and accuracy
42. Caliper - a measuring instrument to measure thickness and diameter of a circle; usually
having two adjustable legs
43. Gauge - a measuring instrument for checking exact dimension of a part
