Teamwork in the Manufacturing Process Flexible Manufacturing Lesson Plan Performance Objective After this lesson, students will be able to explain how to work in a team in the manufacturing process to the satisfaction of the teacher. Specific Objectives Demonstrate how to work in a team to produce a simple product Demonstrate how to work safely to build the product Use time-management techniques and work schedules to plan a manufacturing process to produce the product Explain the input items needed to build the product Explain the feedback process used in the production of the product to ensure quality control Terms Teamwork- a coordinated effort of a group of persons acting together for a common cause or interest Time management- a range of skills, tools, and techniques used to manage time when accomplishing specific tasks, projects, and goals Work schedule- the time frame that an employee works during a certain course of time (a schedule can fluctuate, rotate, or remain constant throughout the course of a year) Manufacturing process- appropriate use of tools, machines, and systems to convert materials into products Input- any item that is used to produce the manufactured part (i.e. labor, machines, equipment, materials, energy, or money) Output- the product that is made by using the input materials and the manufacturing process Feedback- the control of the manufacturing process by monitoring the process Quality control- the verifying and maintaining a desired level of quality in a product by careful planning, use of proper equipment, and inspection of the product Time It should take approximately 55-65 minutes to teach the lesson and 55-65 minutes for each of the 10 lab sessions. Preparation TEKS Correlations This lesson, as published, correlates to the following TEKS. Any changes/alterations to the activities may result in the elimination of any or all of the TEKS listed. Measure dimensions of products to verify conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as rulers, calipers, gauges, or micrometers. Read blueprints, data, manuals, or other materials to determine specifications, inspection and testing procedures, adjustment methods, certification processes, formulas, or measuring instruments required. Soft Skills Quality Control Analysis/ Active Listening/ Critical Thinking Accommodations for Learning Differences It is important that lessons accommodate the needs of every learner. These lessons may be modified to accommodate your students with learning differences by referring to the files found on the Special Populations page of this website. Preparation Review and become familiar with the terminology, website links, and proper metal cutting techniques. Have materials and websites ready prior to the start of the lesson. Ask Have you worked in teams in any courses you have taken? Have you produced a product as a team? This assignment is to produce a set of 30 bookmarks in one week. The group will have to produce and package the bookmarks. The team may do some design; however, the basic size will have to remain the same. Say Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. Complete Daily Inspection Form Student teams will follow the Bookmark Plan handout to produce 30 bookmarks. They will start their lab work by cutting the bookmark. The processes for making the bookmark are listed in the time-management section. As a team, students will complete the Bookmark Team Member Product Form. The supervisor of each team will complete the Time-Management Form/Work Schedule Form. After the bookmarks are made, each team will inspect the products and complete the Bookmark Product Inspection Forms to determine how many were produced, quality, and defects. The supervisor will complete the Bookmark Supervisor Feedback Form. Each team will complete the Bookmark Team Assessment Forms to assess how well they worked as a team to accomplish their goals. The supervisor will complete the Daily Inspection Form. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013. Independent Practice As a team, students will complete the Bookmark Team Member Product Form and the Bookmark Team Assessment Forms. Each team will inspect the products and complete the Bookmark Product Inspection Form to determine how many bookmarks were produced, the quality, and how many defects. The supervisor of each team will complete the Time-Management Form/Work Schedule Form, Daily Inspection Form, and Bookmark Supervisor Feedback Form. Summary Review The students will be able to explain the manufacturing process from the experience of the production run of bookmarks. Evaluation Informal Assessment The teacher will observe the set up of the teams and the production operation of the bookmarks. Formal Assessment The students will have the assignments graded using the attached forms and packaged bookmarks and will be able to explain how to work in a team in the manufacturing process to the satisfaction of the teacher. Enrichment Extension The students will be able to use this team building process to manufacture other products. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2013.
